CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

The Jewish Communal Service Association in partnership with Repair the World invites submission of abstracts for a special issue of the Journal of Jewish Communal Service, to be published winter 2012, on the topic of Jewish service-learning.

AREAS OF INTEREST FOR THE JOURNAL INCLUDE:


The relationship between Jewish identity and Jewish service-learning Different Jewish service-learning program models: immersive Jewish service-learning (domestic and international), service-learning in academic settings (K-12 and on university campuses), local Jewish service-learning (e.g. Mitzvah Day), etc. Broad impacts of Jewish service-learning programs: on the volunteer (both immediate and long-term, on the host community (including building partnerships with communities), on the Jewish community at large, as well as the social impact of service Best practices for recruitment of participants, program design, curriculum development, Jewish learning/content, pedagogy, and group leader training in Jewish service-learning programs; highlighting differences by type of program. (Please note that writing about specific programs and initiatives should be approached from one or more of the following vantage points: reflective practice, analysis, case study, etc. and not from a program marketing perspective) The field of Jewish service-learning: background, history, context, Jewish tradition, purpose, entry-points to the field (for professionals, participants) What is Jewish about Jewish service-learning? The role of religion and religious practice in service-learning Cross-fertilization between: the Jewish service-learning field and the general service-learning field, the Jewish service-learning field and informal Jewish education, the Jewish service-learning field and the field of Jewish communal service Social justice as compared to service Israel: service-learning in Israel; the relationship of Jewish identity around social justice and engagement with Israel Other relevant topics from the Jewish service-learning field and closely-related fields

To be considered, abstracts must be submitted with a working title via e-mail by July 14, 2011 at 9:00AM EDT to the Journals project manager Ruthie Warshenbrot at ruthie@werepair.org, and must be submitted as double-spaced Microsoft Word documents of no more than 350 words in length. Collaborative works written by multiple authors will be considered. Every abstract will be given careful consideration by the Editorial Committee for this issue of the Journal. Based upon blind review of their abstract, all authors will be notified by the end of July 2011 whether they will be invited to submit full-length articles of approximately 3500 5000 words due by early September 2011.
