We already go out of our way to come here because we like markets instead of stores. Why would we change that? Despite the opinion of some residents, people like Catt White, who is the manager for the North Park Farmers Market, say they will be Happy to have (the Fresh & Easy store) there. The Fresh & Easy is going to bring a lot of customers to our market, and make one-stop shopping easier for them. They can get a lot of packaged foods and other things we dont have without making separate trips or going to different areas. Ms. White added that the increased neighborhood traffic will help the farmers market when it plans to expand later this year. The customers who still desire to have a locavore or local food only diet will still most likely choose the farmers market, so any competition between the two markets seems to be practically a non-issue. In addition to helping bring shopping traffic to the neighborhood, the Fresh & Easy store will be helping the community in other ways. According to their website, Fresh & Easy makes a donation to a local group based on suggestions given on their website by residents every time they open a new store. The group that has been chosen for the North Park store will most likely be revealed closer to the time

Residents of the area surrounding Balboa Park, including North Park, South Park and Golden Hill, recently received an official notice from the County Agricultural Commissioners Office that the Light Brown Apple Moth had invaded their neighborhood. Also known as LBAM, the moth, which has been known to decimate over 2,000 different types of plants and over 250 kinds of crops, was discovered in a trap in Balboa Park earlier this month. Since then, the California Department of Food and Agriculture has sought to take immediate measures to remove the pest before it can spread. On August 20th, the notice informed occupants that Isomate pheromone dispensers had been placed in some of their trees and shrubs as a method of biocontrol, or elimination without pesticides. The notice highlights that the pheromone dispensers that were placed do not contain any insecticide, but rather that they release an odorless, synthetic insect pheromone (sexual attractant) that confuses the male LBAM and impairs the pests ability to find a mate. These dispensers will remain in place for another 150 days before they are removed by city workers. In doing this, the City hopes to disrupt the Moths breeding pattern before they can cause any major economic damage to crops and native plants. LBAM and their larvae cause significant harm to fruits and vegetables, including blueberries, strawberries, apples, corn, and cabbage. Their damage is visible through brown spots on the surface, created by the larvae that are laid in the fruit, which also eat the leaves, buds, and shoots of the plant. The presence of the insects was originally discovered in California in July 2007. The insects had smuggled their way into the country via plant material shipped from Australia, which is its native habitat. The Integrated Pest Management website for UC Davis

She added that being literally a block away from the 805 freeway exit for University avenue, the store seems to be much more convenient for people coming home during the rush hour commute. Light Brown Apple Moth had invaded their neighborhood.
