Stephanus Mulyadi (Indonesia)

Stephanus Mulyadi is originally from Sejiram/Borneo. When he came to Dresden in 2006, he could already rely on a lot of professional experience: Back home he had been a teacher and theologian and had worked for the Catholic Social Organisation YSBS. This foundation is located in Cilacap, one of the poorest regions of Java. YSBS is working in the fields of education, health (running 3 hospitals), socio-economic development (running two banks and various infrastructure-projects), justice, peace, and the integrity of creation. YSBS disposes of 25 educational institutions, among them elementary-, middle- and high schools as well as vocational schools. In total, 500 teachers are employed there. He did a Master degree in Vocational Education for Development Cooperation at the Technical University of Dresden, aiming at helping his people and promoting the development of education. Today, a lot of Indonesians benefit from the fruits of his studies and engagement. Stephanus Mulyadi remembers his time as a KAAD-scholar: The KAAD educational program, including many seminars and workshops in different German towns and the Annual Convention provided me with a wide range of information and options for networking. I was able to meet professors, experts and friends from different countries. Those meetings have strengthened my self-confidence and encouraged me to establish international contacts. Still today, as a social worker, am benefitting from this experience. After having finished his studies at Dresden University in 2008, Mr. Mulyadi returned to Indonesia and resumed work at YSBS, now as managing director. He brought along new ideas, know-how and helpful contacts. Since 2009, he has successfully started a variety of new projects, as for example: Leadership training for young Christians for building up a vivid young church able to contribute to the economic, social and democratic development of the region. Participants of these trainings are also prepared to take over responsibility in the fields of justice, peace and the integrity of creation (JPIC), in order to create a sustainable and efficient network. Three new training centres, where the leadership training and courses about nature and sustainable development (among others) are being held. Three new vocational schools which apply the Integrated Vocational Education and Training System (IVET). Here, underpriviledged young people can study informatics, computer- and autimotive engineering and get the chance to earn their own living. Improvement of the infrastructure of the Cilacap Region. Funding for this project is provided by catholic relief organisations Misereor and the Katholische Zentralstelle fr Entwicklungshilfe (KZE). The work itself is carried out by the local population. The monitoring of the project showed that the joint effort improved the attitude of the Muslim majority towards the Christian population. Therefore, in August 2010, a follow-up project has been started in order to initiate interreligious dialogue between the different religious groups through teamwork in the sector of infrastructure. We whish Stephanus Mulyadi success and Gods blessing for this creative and important approach!
