(Spelling 4, Subject verb agreement 2, Verb form 4) Origins The Seven Deadly Sins never occurs as a formal list in the Bible. Some people say they can all been found in Matthew's Gospel (chapters 5 through 7), but they are not in a simple list there. Others submit Proverbs 6:16-19, but this is a different list, covering pride, lies, murder, evil plans, lies again, causing conflict. Clearly not the same. This sins were identified as a group around the same time as the Bible was being translated into a single language. Rather than these sins being identified in a single place in the Bible, they are found all through it, from Genesis to Revelation. The letters of the New Testament mention all of these, and much others as well. The Catechism has many Scriptural references in the section that lists the "Seven Deadly Sins." It is well to remember that the Scriptures come from the Jewish and Christian Churches, not the other way around. In both cases, faith preceded the writing. What are the Seven Deadly Sins? Pope Gregory the Great (d. 604) described Seven Deadly Sins in his Moralia in Job. 1. Superbia Pride 2. Invidia Envy 3. Ira Anger 4. Avaritia Avarice 5. Tristia Sandez 6. Gula Gluttony 7. Luxuria Lust The sin Tristia was later replace by Accidia, or Sloth. This sin was taken from earlier catalogues of vice, in particular, the eight evil thoughts listed by Evaagrius (346-99), and the eight principal vices proposed by the mid fourthcentury writer Cassian. Some of the iconography of the Sins was derived from the descriptions of the Battles between the Virtues and Vices in the Psychomachia by the fourth-century poet Prudentius. Why were they called Deadly? The church make a divition between sins which were venial and could be forgiven without the need for the sacrament of Confesion and those which were capital and merited damnation. Capital or Deadly Sins were so called because they could have a fatal effect on an individuals espiritual health. Post task: Ss.fill the chart with their own ideas about the topic.
