    OnthesubjectofTraditionalAdvaita(Oneness)versusNeoAdvaita IthasrecentlybeenarguedthatTraditionalOnenessissomehow betterthan NeoOneness,oreven PseudoOneness.The strangenessofthisideaexposesthefoolishnessoftryingtogivetitle tothatwhichislimitless. Thecunningandmanipulativegurumindinevitablyobjectifiesverbal expression,andoutofthatobjectifyingarisesaplethoraofdogmatic movementsallclaimingsupremeunderstandingofthat whichcannot beunderstood. Asaconsequence,socalledTraditionalAdvaita,forinstance,isjust anotherestablishedreligionwithaproliferationofteachingsand literature,allofwhichverysuccessfullyandconsistentlymissthe mark.ItstandsalongsideChristianityandBuddhismasoneofthe manysystemsofpersonalindoctrinationpromisingtheeventual spiritual fulfillment.ToquotefromTheOpenSecret: Totranslatetheinexpressibleintothedoctrinalistoattemptto transformasongoffreedomintoadogmaoflimitation.Whenthe birdhasflown,theessenceofitssongisoftenmislaidandallweare leftwithisanemptycage. TheteachingofTraditionalAdvaitahasnorelevancetoliberation becauseitisbornoutofafundamentalmisconception.Itslogicaland sensiblyprogressiverecommendationsincludemeditation,self enquiry,selfrestraint,andtoquotetherenunciationoftheegoand alldesire.Ofcoursethereisnothingrightorwrongwiththeideaof desiringtorenouncedesire.However,theseidealistic recommendationsandteachingsarebasedonthefundamental misconceptionthatthereissuchathingasaseparateindividualwith freewillandthechoicetobecome. Thebeliefthatthereisaseparateseeker(subject)whocanchooseto attainorbecomeworthyofsomethingcalledenlightenment(object) isadirectdenialofabidingoneness(Advaita).

    Withinthehypnoticdreamofseparation,theprevailingperceptionis thatoftheseekerandthesought.Theignoranceofthisperception continuesinthesearchforenlightenment,andinevitablythedream seekerisattractedtoadreamteachingwhichupholdsand encouragesthesamepremiseofpersonaldisciplineandsacrifice (seeking)leadingtotheeventualgoalofenlightenment(thesought). Therecommendationtocultivateunderstandingandrefine somethingcalledthemind(?)ishugelyattractivetothedream seekerbecauseitprolongstheveryworthysearchandthriveson logic,detachment,complication,endeavour,hierarchyand exclusivity. Tryingtounderstandonenessisasfutileastryingtofallinlovewith aninch. Thereisnopossibilityofteachingoneness.However,thesharingcan bringarediscoveryofthatwhichisalreadyknown. IfwearetobelieverecentdescriptionsofsomethingcalledNeo Advaitaasbeingtheforcingofthetruth (?)onunpreparedminds oradvisingpeopletostopseekingorsuggestingtopeoplethatthey arenothingbuttheminditself,theseteachings,iftheyexist,are equallyasdualisticasthetraditionalAdvaitatheywerebornoutof. Thisconfusionisofcourseasmuchanexpressionofonenessasthe claritywhichexposesit. Allofthissillycircusissimplytheeternalplayofonenessapparently seekingitself. Itisthewonderfulcosmicjokeonenessplaysonitself bypretendingtobeanindividualseekingsomethingcallednotbeing anindividual. Whenitissuddenlyanddirectlyrediscoveredbynoonethat liberationbringswithittherealisationthatthereisnothingtoseek andnoonetobecomeliberated,thenthereismuchlaughter. TonyParsons 25.03.05
