It is free learning for parents and carers in schools and childrens centres. Some crche places may be available for parents with pre-school children. As mums, dads, granddads, grandmas, aunties, uncles and carers, you are your childs most important teachers. We also know you may have very different educational backgrounds. You may have left school with no qualifications, have forgotten skills learnt at school or would like to simply refresh your knowledge. You may have also realised that schools teach children in very different ways now from when you were at school. Family Learning will introduce you to the school curriculum so that you can support your child without confusing him or her with different methods you may know. Did you hate maths at school? But did you know that maths is everywhere, when you get up and get the children ready for school, go shopping or plan a trip? You and your children are using maths. Maths for children is all about playing counting on, halving, doubling and sharing. English is about creating stories, dressing up and acting out different roles. There are plenty of everyday activities and games we can show you to make it fun for you and your children to learn. You could also learn computer skills along the way! If English is not your first language, dont worry; we can help you develop your skills on Family Language courses which will help you support your child. If you dont have a qualification in English or maths you may get one with us at the same time! Find out about a free class near you by calling HALS Family

Upcomi ng Events Film Night at Marcus Garvey Library Presents: Radio On directed by Chris Petit (104 min Cert 18) Thursday 14th July at 7.00pm Chris Petits anti-road movie is both a hymn and homage to the dreamed imperatives of the highway, while remaining ruefully aware that in England at least the road soon runs out and the journey must turn in other directions, not least inward. Following a young man (David Beames) as he travels to Bristol to investigate the mysterious death of his brother, Radio On offers a unique, compelling and even mythic vision of late 1970s England, stalled between failed hopes of cultural and social change and imminent upheavals of Thatcherism. Washington's Georgetown, where they are seeking to build their new lives is supposed to be a safe haven for former slaves. But the city's own emancipation efforts in 1862 serve only to compromise the family's status, putting them at the risk of becoming the property of the family's former master.
