CITW Strategies
McRel has identied 9 strategies that have shown to effect achievement in learning. Most of us remember seeing the list by effect as seen below.

The problem with this is that many teachers would instantly jump to recognizing similarities and differences because that was the strategy that showed a large percentage gain. The trouble with this is that before students are able to recognize difference they must rst develop understanding in a classroom environment set up for learning. McRel has since reordered these nine strategies and grouped them as follows:

Creating a Classroom Environment

Setting Objectives Organize your road trip. Know where you are going, the supplies you need, and basic routes. Students should be aware of where they learning will take them. Providing feedback Use criterion-referenced feedback and explanations. Always need to know when we are going to use this Focus feedback on specic types of knowledge Give feedback on assessments Based on feedback, allow revisions. Engage students in peer feedback. Ask students to self-assess. Reinforcing Effort Explicitly teach students about the importance of effort. Have students keep track of their effort and achievement.
