Got skills?
Michael Medina Mike Upchurch
ranite Bay boasts some of the best trails for mountain biking in the region for beginning riders all the way to intermediate or advanced. Michael Medina knows all about it. The trails out there are well maintained, Medina said. Its a local tight-knit community that takes care of them. As an avid mountain biker and competitive racer with the Mad Cat Bike Team, Medina is an integral part of that cycling
community that helps maintain the trails at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area in Granite Bay. Medina also teaches classes at Golds Gym in Granite Bay geared toward introducing people to cycling and getting experienced riders and endurance athletes into shape. Medina has been cycling for more than 20 years and says its a sport that just about anybody can get into, regardless of their skill level. The biggest thing that turns people away from actually
wanting to mountain bike is they think they have to be competitive and really good, he said. A lot of people out here are just average guys trying to come out here and have
fun. To prove this, Medina is holding a skills clinic on two consecutive Saturdays in July for anyone who wants to learn more about the sport or work on their skill set. The clinic, sponsored by Golds Gym in Granite Bay, will take place at Folsom Lake State Recreation Area on July 16 and 23 and is free for anyone who wants to be involved. Medina said you dont have to be a member of Golds Gym to attend the clinic, and everyone who participates will
receive a one-week complimentary membership to the gym. Were trying to get some new people into the sport and get some more foot traffic into the gym, he said. Mike Upchurch, owner of Mad Cat Bicycles and founder of the Mad Cat Bike Team, says Medina is a good cyclist and has helped train riders on the Mad Cat team. He joined our team this year, Upchurch said. Hed done some road races and

continued from page 4 mountain bike races, now hes racing for us. The Mad Cat Bike Team was formed in 2005 when Mad Cat Bicycles opened its doors in Sacramento. The team started with about two or three riders, Upchurch said, and quickly grew to where it is today, made up of more than 60 cyclists and mountain bikers of all skill levels ranging from ages 7 to 61. The main difference between us and most shop teams is that its almost like we are a team that owns a bike shop, Upchurch said. Were like a family. We all know each other, we all ride together. Our jerseys actually say family on the back collars. Medina said what he likes best about being on the Mad Cat team is the absence of egos. A lot of the Mad Cat people live in the area, he said. They are very family oriented and open to all skill levels. To be on the Mad Cat team, Upchurch said, riders pay a $50 membership fee and must compete in at least 12 mountain bike, cyclocross or road bike races each year. In addition to racing, team members must volunteer their time to trail maintenance and helping out at events. They must also represent the shop well at events by being friendly, helpful and supportive on the race course and on the trail, Upchurch said. We try to do a good job of being a positive force in the cycling community and try to put the fun back into racing, Upchurch said. Too many people get too agro about racing and have too much attitude and that wont fly here. Medina said anyone interested in learning more about the sport and wanting to attend the free skills clinic can contact him at (916) 343-1041 or by sending an email to takeittothe finish@gmail.com.

Trend: Personalized
While fun and flirty are fine for most occasions, Desideri offers a personalized line of jewelry that is meaningful and will be treasured for years to come. Created by local designer, Linnell Chang, the jewelry is custom made for each recipient, and is a synthesis of words that act as affirmations. Chang began with a handmade piece for her niece, then quickly decided her
own daughter needed a necklace, as well. What words did I want my daughter to wear around her neck what words would be meaningful to her, and what words did I want her to live by? she asked. Since that time, almost two years ago, Chang has created an extensive questionnaire that she completes with her clients, helping them choose the words of affirmation that are right for them, or for the jewelrys recipient. Chang uses a variety of
metals, which she hand stamps with lettering, and the pieces often include charms or precious metals, as well. While most Desideri customers order necklaces, Chang creates charm bracelets, pins and more. There is power in words, Chang said. Some people already know the words they want to use, but most dont. arol Hamilton of Folsom gets teary eyed and sometimes bawls when she has to leave her girls with a sitter and she cries again when she picks them up. You can see their eyes beginning to look sad, too. Its an emotional time for the family. The girls that Hamilton has a difficult time leaving are Tenaya, 4, and Katie, 5. Both are adopted and both are beautiful golden retrievers dogs. I still have their baby pictures on my refrigerator, she said. Hamilton, who used to take business trips with her husband, Steve, has left her girls with pet hotels that offer amenities such as plush beds, classical music and flat-panel TVs with petappropriate shows. They thought there was a death in the family because I was so emotional when I left them and cried so hard when I picked them up, Hamilton said. Nowadays, she hires a neighbor to care for Tenaya and Katie. Or she leaves them at PetSmart on Iron Point Road in Folsom when she has the carpets cleaned. The people at PetSmart know the dogs, er, girls, because thats where she has them groomed. Whenever Hamilton leaves the house, she turns up the volume on her answering machine. That way they can hear my voice when I call and talk to them, she said. Although owners like Hamilton are pretty picky about where they leave their pets, there are places that promise pampering, tender loving care and plenty of activities. That helps prevent doggie boredom and mischievous behavior when pets are home alone. Folsom Dog Resort and Training Center provides overnight lodging and doggie day care for pets while their owners are on vacation, business trips or when they have work done in their homes. We have comfortable indoor rooms for dogs, private areas for them to reside in, said Jake Romero, co-owner. The facility has an outdoor play yard a quarter acre of special synthetic turf where dogs exercise. The guests participate in organized play groups with activities selected by the owners and supervised by trained activity leaders. We encourage as much exercise and activity as we can to take their pets minds off being left here, Romero said.

rooms in one of 14 Kitty Cottages and are given personalized TLC time by associates. The threetiered rooms with litter boxes and sleep areas face a larger room with a television. At PetSmarts doggie day camp pets play and socialize in playrooms that accommodate 11, 15 and 17 dogs each. Dogs that dont get along with others must at least be people-friendly. Day camp hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with an hour off for lunch and rest. The day care program offers fewer play hours. PetsSmarts PetsHotel provides standard atrium rooms or private suites with televisions for really pampered pets, said a spokesperson. While pet owners may experience separation anxiety during vacations and business trips, their dogs can find plenty of activities to keep them happy and make the time go faster. And, who knows? They may enjoy returning to play times with their newfound friends, both two and four legged.

or some children, summer means three months of limited brain stimulation. But that doesnt have to happen to your kids. The Creative Arts and Music Center in Granite Bay offers plenty of special programs designed to feed the right side of your kids brain and spark their creativity, all while promoting fun. On a recent morning at the center, several children sit around a large wooden table, molding floam a light, sticky foam-like substance into various shapes. Look what I made, an apple, says 3-year-old Cody Pigeon, proudly holding up a ball of floam. Head teacher Loralyn Owen hurries over to Cody and praises his creation, and encourages him to continue. Then shes off to admire the work of 4-yearold Ashley Rowland, who dips a paintbrush into yellow, red and blue paint and slathers the substance onto a sheet of white butcher paper. Owen teaches the Art, Music and Movement class for preschoolers. She also runs the Pee Wee Picasso class, a yearlong program that introduces art to kids 3 to 5 years old. They draw, paint and sculpt using watercolors, acrylics, chalk pastels, clay and more. They also sing and dance, and learn about music. Owen has worked at the center for a decade, beginning as an intern. I just stayed because I liked it so much, she says. I love everything about this place. The energy of it and look at all these cute kids. Theyre adorable. The Creative Arts and Music
(The center) is unique. Especially with cuts in public school funding for arts and music, there arent a lot of places where kids can have this kind of exposure.
Thea Rood, co-owner
Aubrey Miller, 4, shows off a lighthouse she sculpted from floam at the Creative Arts and Music Center in Granite Bay. The center has activities and programs that keep kids creative.
Center was founded in 1994 after then-20-year-old Greg Bodie introduced his mother, Brenda Bodie, to his friends mother, Saskia Covington, and the two women decided to start the establishment Greg Bodie remains at the center, as co-owner and resident artist. Hes a big kid-magnet, says co-owner Thea Rood. When he pops in the kids say, Oh, Mr. Greg is here! The center started in a strip mall but quickly outgrew that space and now resides in a remodeled and brightly col-
ored farmhouse on 2.5 acres on Douglas Boulevard, surrounded by protected wetlands on one side and Granite Bay Community Park on the other. Open windows look out onto trees and flowers. The property also boasts natural wood play structures. On that recent morning, Owen approaches a little boy and rolls up the sleeves of his shirt, so they wont get dirty in the paint. Then she picks up a pen to write the name of a little girl on her sheet of butcher paper. Are you Ms. Pickles? she asks the girl. Are you Ms. Potato Head? The girl shakes her head no, until Owen arrives at her real name. While kids might bring in the adorable element, the center doesnt just serve children. The Creative Arts and Music Center also offers programming for teenagers and adults, including a five-week long adult art class that covers basic techniques, and workshops in drawing, fine arts and more for teens. Aspiring musicians of all ages can take private music lessons in guitar, piano, drums and several other instruments.

Dacia Biletnikoff earns coveted spot at the London Contemporary Dance School
acia Biletnikoff is fond of a particular catch phrase: Training is the opposite of hoping. The mantra drives the 19-year-old, who spends about 20 hours a week practicing dance. While at Granite Bay High School she graduated in May this meant four or five hours of training after school every day. She has lived this strenuous schedule for the past five years, attending rehearsals at the prestigious Northern California Dance Conservatory in Roseville.
I dont really complain, Biletnikoff says. I love dance. Im obsessed. I think you have to be obsessed to get to this level. Sometimes, I get tired. But its never that I dont want to go dance. When Biletnikoff a pretty woman with long blond hair and big green eyes talks about her fondness for dance and choreography, and her plans for the future, she smiles widely. Those plans include summer performances in Austria and New York, and college at the London Contemporary Dance School this fall. When she reflects on the death of her older sister, Tracey Biletnikoff, who was murdered in 1999, her smiles fade and she strings together articulate thoughts in one, long breathless sentence. But she always stays positive. What I got out of it, is when you have something you want, really go for

it, Dacia Biletnikoff says. Thats exactly what she has done. As a 5-year-old, Dacia Biletnikoffs best friend took dance lessons, so she asked her parents, Angela and NFL Hall of Famer Fred Biletnikoff, if she could, too. Growing up, she also played soccer, violin and piano. But at 13 years old, the daughter of the Oakland Raiders wide receiver and Super Bowl MVP chose to focus on the delicate art form of dance. For the past eight years, Dacia Biletnikoff has trained at the Northern
California Dance Conservatory under the tutelage of renowned instructors, including ballet master Theodore Constant, who has toured all over the world. She studies jazz with Kelly Archer, and practices contemporary and modern dance with the studios artistic director Jen Bradford. (Dacia) has a unique style, Bradford says. She has an innate ability to take moves the choreographer gives her and internalize it and produce in her body what the choreographer is looking for.
I want to have my own company. Its a big dream, but its something I want to do.
Dacia Biletnikoff
Part of that style may come from Dacias disdain for sloppy dancers and her skill at technicalities. She has a deep passion for dance that comes through, Bradford says. Each dancer expresses
themselves through movement. Her style is very intricate. Although she has a strong technical base, she has passionate and fluid movements. Dacia Biletnikoff favors contemporary and modern dance, which incor-
porate raw, humanized and organic movements. On June 12, she will travel to Austria for 10 days to perform in a festival, where her first choreographed piece will be danced. In July, her sixperson company will perform at the Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival. But her biggest excitement comes later this year when she moves to London. She applied to the college on a whim, and traveled to New York to audition for one of 45
spots out of 1,600 applicants from around the world a .03 percent acceptance rate. I, honestly, really didnt think I had that great a chance of getting in, Dacia Biletnikoff says. Im pretty excited. I was originally going to go to New York because I got accepted to a school there. But when this came up, I couldnt give it up. Upon her arrival in

away. Shes earned it, Angela Biletnikoff says. Nobody gave her anything. We just gave her support. Dacia Biletnikoff recently celebrated her 19th birthday, nearing the age when her sis-
ter Tracey died, strangled at the hands of her boyfriend. Dacia Biletnikoff, who is one of five children, says her sister struggled with drugs and alcohol, but came clean before her death. Dacia Biletnikoff is not a party person, doesnt do drugs or drink alcohol. I want to make the right decisions, because Ive seen the ultimate consequence, she says. Its made me a stronger person, and I want to make sure I define myself in a good way. A large part of her selfdefining involves dancing. One day, she hopes to become a choreographer in
New York. I want to have my own company, she says. Its a big dream, but its something I want to do. But its a dream within reach. Out of all our dancers, and there are 500 of them, all would agree that Dacia has the most kind, open personality, Bradford says. I have never known her to come to class angry or upset. asting for 10 hours in preparation of having a needle stuck into ones arm isnt the most fun half-day, to be sure. But theres a light at the end of every tunnel, and in this case, its that next meal. Granite Rock Grill in Rocklin is a good place to fill a bottomless pit. Owners Kay and Rich Gardner have more than 55 years of experience in food service. In addition to Granite Rock Grill, they have a catering service that offers gourmet breakfast, Italian, Mexican and Western menus. Hearty appropriately describes Granite Rock Grills food and the folks who work there. Theyre warm and friendly. They keep the huge drink glasses filled, explain what dishes consist of and even put leftovers in the takeout box for you. The Gardners werent at the restaurant on a recent Wednesday morning, but their crew serviced a steady stream of customers that kept the 15 booths, 13 tables and small counter more than half full. Rosa Dominguez has worked at Granite Rock Grill for four and a half years. She said the restaurants qualities are its customer service, portions of food and quality of food, all the should-be basics of a restaurant. Like its portions, the menu is a huge blend of breakfast and lunch items (the restaurant is open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. daily). Prices, on the other hand, are reasonable from $7 to $10 for many dishes. There are several Benedict and scramble dishes, flapjacks, burgers, sandwiches, low-fat and low-carb options and a

One can never go wrong with meatloaf, lettuce, tomato, mayonnaise and onion between a baked bun. But we decided to have the kielbasa skillet, a scramble of eggs, kielbasa, potatoes, onions and bell peppers topped with melted cheddar cheese. It came with two biscuits and gravy. It was special indeed and hearty. By the time Dominguez was

Now, CASA programs operate in all 50 states with more than 50,000 volunteers and more than 225,000 kids being served every year. In California, there are CASA programs in 43 counties and three tribal councils. Currently Placer County has 195 trained CASA volunteers. The volunteers are thoroughly screened and go through orientation and 30 hours of training. The need for volunteers is great, especially for male mentors and advocates. In Placer County, 72 percent of Child Advocates of Placer County youth in need of a mentor are male, 52 percent of those in need of a CASA are male but only 18 percent of the current volunteers are male. Judd Holiday said that he had wanted a volunteer opportunity that was more than stacking boxes and counting postcards. It can be difficult, he said. But the reward more than makes up for the difficulty. When the mother calls and says, Hey, man, Im noticing a difference, or the teacher says, Yeah, he really is doing better in school this month. ouve heard of the ice bath. Marathon runners and many other elite athletes from around the globe will sometimes have a good soak in icy cold water after an event to help control inflammation and aid in recovery. Now, a small, family-owned company based in Roseville is introducing a new technology to the United States that could make the traditional ice bath seem like an antiquated form of therapy. Cryotherapy, translated from Greek as cold therapy, uses a cold chamber kept at a cool negative 166 degrees Fahrenheit. Users spend up to three minutes in the freezing chamber, allowing maximum skin exposure, and the cold air will actually shrink blood vessels to reduce swelling, according to Todd Kramer, owner and operations manager at US Cryotherapy in Granite Bay. Your skin temperature will drop about 35 to 40 degrees, which is very helpful in removing the inflammation from the muscles, Kramer said. Its state-of-the-art technology, definitely a game changer for the way weve done traditional recovery. Kramer said there are about 200 cryotherapy chambers spread throughout Europe, and his father discovered the new technology while he was in Prague. After doing some research, his father found out this technology was not yet available in the United States and the family business model was formed. The senior Kramer partnered with his three children, Rob, Kevin and Todd, to form US Cryotherapy and bring the technology over to the United States. US Cryotherapy owns the exclusive distribution rights for all of North America and Todd Kramer said the company hopes to introduce the German-based technology to sports teams and physical therapists across the country. We are looking as a family-owned operation to open three to five of these in California, he said. And then we are opening it up to franchising opportunities. Todd Weygandt, owner of CrossFit in

Jack Nickens steps out of the cryotherapy chamber at US Cryotherapy in Granite Bay. The Cryotherapy chamber can get down to negative166 degrees Fahrenheit and lowers the body temperature between 35-40 degrees Fahrenheit, which the company says is good for helping heal aches, pains, strains and sprains.
Rocklin, is a firm believer in the use of cryotherapy and has been using the chamber since the company opened its icy doors three months ago. When I get to a point to where I know Im going to be really sore for the next few days, I do the cryotherapy and the amount of soreness goes away, Weygandt said. Its not a magic pill, it doesnt make me perfect but it makes me a heck of a lot less sore and enables me to hit it hard again in the gym the
next day. A typical cryotherapy session consists of the patient sitting in the freezing chamber for three minutes, followed by 10 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise at room temperature or resting on a heated hydro-massage table. Kramer said blood vessels will constrict and then expand, allowing oxygen and nutrients to get into areas that are notorious for bad blood flow such as tendons or ligaments. It doesnt drop the core temperature of the body, Kramer said. And it doesnt freeze the soft tissues in your muscles, which is important because you can use this for pre-event or post recovery. For now, Kramer said, the technology is not FDA-approved, nor does it need to be since it is a non-invasive procedure. But the company hopes to soon get FDA approval so it can partner with local hospitals and physical therapy centers and get on a medical reimbursement schedule to treat patients. Having people understand our technology is the biggest obstacle, Kramer said. The people that have tried it have really embraced the technology. He said people who are predisposed to heart or circulatory conditions will be screened at the front desk and restricted from using the chamber. In addition to the chamber, the company also has a portable device that can be used to treat isolated areas, and a stretching cage where patients can stretch and warm up after treatment.

Todd Kramer, owner of US Cryotherapy in Granite Bay, performs spot cryotherapy on Jack Nickens. Cryotherapy is good for helping heal aches, pains, strains and sprains. It doesnt drop the core temperature of the body. And it doesnt freeze the soft tissues in your muscles, which is important because you can use this for pre-event or post recovery, Kramer said.
There are also four certified personal trainers and one certified medical assistant on staff. Even though the technology is geared toward treating athletes, Kramer said it is also meant to treat just about anybody with chronic back, shoulder, neck and hip issues. Anything that is soft tissue related we can pretty much treat, he said. You can use it as part of your ongoing preventative maintenance routine for general health. Thats exactly why Weygandt, who competes regularly in CrossFitness, a new sport that combines weight lifting, gymnastics, running and rowing, uses it.

taly did Tuscan first, but Granite Bay does it best. A marriage of Italian style and Hearst Castle grandeur, 5243 Castlereigh Court is the address that Tuscan lovers aspire to. Sweeping staircases and balustrades beckon, creating an entrance that says grand. But the scale of the home, along with ingenious architecture, creates intimate spaces that say inviting. More than 6,000 square feet, mostly on the ground floor, the home has a wide footprint, while keeping an intimate feel. You dont see how wide the home is because of all the interesting angles, said Fran Dixon of Ellington Properties. The homeowners put at least a couple of years into planning the home before they ever started the process, and they were very exacting and particular with what they wanted. According to Dixon, many
wanted, and the effect is just extraordinary, Dixon said. Surrounded in sumptuous color, the homes interior is filled with hues mixed on natures palette hues like camel, cocoa and caramel. The kitchen is a must for any serious chef. A Thermador sixburner professional cook top with griddle will be a favorite kitchen appliance, along with Thermador double ovens and built-in microwave. But its the massive rounded center island and stunning hood a blocked-stone affair, akin to something you might find in Romes coliseum, that take center stage in this cucina. In addition to cooking, the well-planned kitchen makes cleanup a snap with two Bosche dishwashers and compactor.

have been asked from time to time just what it means to celebrate the 4th of July. Its not just the mantra of the birth of a new nation. Its not just another weekend to drink, party, barbecue and take time off. It has to have a deeper meaning, one that resonates from the past and looks to the future. For me, this day brings good and bad memories. The bad memory was when at the age of 5, a hand-held firework backfired in my hand and caused me to spend the night in the emergency room with second-degree burns. The good was when I turned 18 years old. The year was 1980 and I will never forget being

able to vote for the first time. The nation needed a leader that would bring us leadership, direction and hope. Looking back we chose the right leader, Ronald Reagan. I remember how nervous I was to walk into that small booth and pick my choice. I still walk into the voting booths with nervous energy today. Why? Because this is what our forefathers bled and died for. It
wasnt just by accident that a number of disgruntled, angry men decided that they had enough of the outrageous behaviors of the British king. The men in that hot Philadelphia courthouse knew what they were starting. It was called rebellion, treason, a lack of respect and more. If they failed, it would be the block or worse, but if they succeeded, a new nation would be born, one that would preserve liberties and a form of government unheard of in history. By vote it was decided to declare independence from foreign rule, from being forced to quarter soldiers, from unfair taxation an independence
for self-determination. Our history as a nation is not one of conquest, or the taking of territory, even though that happened early in our history. Our armies, our forces, have fought to set other men free. Free from a tyranny that they themselves could not do alone. In Cuba, Panama, Nicaragua, western Europe, Iraq, Afghanistan, Indonesia and a host of other places, we are engaged in a desperate struggle, not just for the freedom of other people to self-determination, but to stop an archaic form of religious government that reverts mankind to the stone age. So how does the 4th of July affect you and your outlook on
this nation? For me, it is represented by the pictures in my office of my military boys who have fought, bled and have seen their friends die or be wounded for us to have the freedom we have today. I will never take for granted the meaning of the 4th of July. There is more to this holiday than barbecues, beer and fireworks. It is a time of remembrances of the men and women who gave, and continue to give, their all in the cause of making all people free. We should celebrate their lives every day.

f you want to be a bonded team as a family, keep it fun! Make your time count. A child who feels a bond with his family and others feels pure love. But not everyone has the same understanding of what bonding is or may not realize some genuine thought needs to be given to reach the depth your child needs. For example, everyone needs a little nudge here or there to be the best family member possible.
Think of bonding as communicating needs, so the familiar give and take comes into focus. Give should be high on the totem pole, and I dont mean things. We are becoming a society that thinks things are most
important. Lets try giving undivided time, showing more respect, as well as including your child in decision making. Most children may not know the concept of bonding, but without doubt, they know love and respect. Demonstrate caring and be a sensitive team player, over and over again, day after day. Never stop. Repetition is a way your child learns what is important.

Dont drop the ball. Drop the towel, the book, or television program and give your child your full attention. This means more looking into your childs eyes with love and easing up on that irritated, penetrating look that says Please, dont bother me right now. If you dont have a lot of time to spare, make each minute you can spend be worth your effort. Your child knows when you are trying.
You dont have to sign a contract to get in better shape. Theres a lot to be said for exercising with your child, do a ropes course, swim a quarter mile or run around the track together.
one with no objects to treasure. Incredible experiences come from many directions and for many purposes. Giving without getting is one of them.

We dont need a disaster to volunteer. It could be helping a family who is jobless at present by dropping off some baked goods, or giving up a treasured object to some-

n our first evening walking around Herringtons Sierra Pines Resort in historic Sierra City, I remarked to my traveling companion how sweet it seemed to live in such a small town at the base of the majestic Sierra Buttes. Youd just walk around and know everyone in town, and wave and say, Oh hi, Bob, I said. Sure enough, the next afternoon, we met Bob. He is one of 225 residents living in Sierra City, which was founded in the 1850s as a mining town. Bob told us about his nearly four decades living there, his memory of the hippie haven it once was and his time working for the Forest Service. He chatted with us outside Sierra Country Store on Main Street, where locals and tourists congregate to purchase supplies, order a yummy bowl of potato salad or a tasty chicken sandwich at the deli counter. Im watching the snow melt, Bob explained. That bonding moment was one of several highlights from three days spent in Sierra City, located in Tahoe National Forest. We stayed at Herringtons Sierra Pines Resort in a well-kept, charming cabin-like room with wood paneling, a flatscreen television and a balcony overlooking a waterfall and the rushing North Yuba River. Our journey began as

my companion and I drove the two hours from Roseville on Highway 49. We oohed and ahhed the whole way, and said the word pretty so many times I lost count. One beautiful sight was soon eclipsed by another natural splendor even more breathtaking. We arrived at Herringtons Sierra Pines Resort and met Mike Herrington, who runs the operation with his wife, Bev. His father, Hugh, opened the resort they own 50 acres, on both sides of the highway and river for
fun 47 years ago. The restaurant serves breakfast and dinner daily. Im a vegetarian and although the menu consisted of meat dishes, the cooking staff readily accommodated my dietary restrictions. The restaurant serves fresh rainbow trout from the fish pond out front. Our server suggested we pay 25 cents to feed the trout. Its fun, she said. So we did and the fish went crazy, scrambling over one another to gobble up the food. On our second day, my companion and I drove five miles and turned left on Golden Lake Road where we encountered amazing views of the Sierra Buttes. People we met described this side of the buttes as reminiscent of the Swiss Alps and stunning. Within a radius of nine miles from the resort, there are more than 20 lakes ideal for boating, hiking, sightseeing and fishing. We made it up the road to Salmon Lake, which was still covered with snow. No one else was there, and we sat and ate lunch and snapped photos. I thought this vacation would be relaxing, and it was, but there was also plenty of hiking involved, including a trek on the Pacific Crest Trail. Besides the natural beauty and delightful accommodations, one of the best parts of the trip was the lack of cell phone service. For those three days, I felt totally disconnected from the outside world. It was great.
