REED CITY School buses will be rolling again this fall in Reed City but its going to come at a cost. At a special meeting held Thursday the Reed City Area Public Schools Board of Education agreed to reinstate busing for the 2011-12 school year. The board signed a three-year contract with Michigan Education Transportation Services of Grand Rapids to provide busing services to the district. Because of concerns from parents in the community, we decided to reinstate busing, said board Treasurer Scott Ridderman. We did a large survey and we got a good response from the people in our district and what they needed as far as transportation goes. Under the new contract, the districts transportation budget will be $816,542 about $250,000 less than last years. Items under the revised busing budget include $78,000 for gas, $80,000 for repair parts, $20,528 for insurance and $75,953 for a full-time mechanic. A letter announcing the busing reinstatement will be sent to parents today. A copy of the letter that will be sent home to parents on Friday. A route schedule with times and pickup locations will be released in the districts August newsletter. RCAPS Superintendent Steve Westhoff was pleased to announce the return of busing to the district. We understand that in many families there was an extreme need for transportation to and from school, Westhoff said. We listened to those concerns and will now be able to transport their students to school and home again. Citizens have suggested the cancellation of the transportation program was an exercise used to manipulate public opinion in some way. If this was some sort of exercise, it certainly is one I dont want to ever take part in again, Westhoff said. Its ridiculous to say this was an exercise. A stunning amount of work went into trying to nd creative solutions to the problems involved in getting students to and from school without an organized busing program. We have managed to resolve one problem, but we still have signicant budget problems in our district. We found a way to make our transportation program work for now. We listened to the people of this community and the board acted accordingly. Eppley
Complete Auto Care would like to offer the following tips to get you ready for your summer beach trips: Make sure your vehicles uids and lters are fresh and the air conditioner is working properly, as this will help keep your vehicle cool in the summer heat. Avoid overloading your vehicle, as too much weight in the vehicle can decrease your gas mileage and create excessive heat inside your tires. When driving on sand, point your vehicles wheels straight ahead when starting off. This will help reduce the effort required by your vehicle to move forward. If you get stuck in the sand, reverse out. Gently reverse on your own tracks and then try to slowly move forward again. Before trying to reverse out, remove sand build-up from behind the tires or under your vehicle. Once you get home, remove all traces of sand, dirt or salt from your vehicle after a beach trip. When hosing your vehicle, pay special attention to areas like the mudguards and any other nooks and crannies where sand can get trapped. Make sure to check your tire pressure on all four tires and your spare at least once per month and before every long trip. Be certain to keep them at the recommended pressure level. Firestone Complete Auto Care also realizes that rising gas prices might keep you and your family from embarking on a summer road trip to the seashore. Thats why we have set up Gasonomics, an online resource to help you save money at the pump! Go to http://www. firestonecompleteautocare.com/ gasonomics for money-saving tips and special offers from Firestone Complete Auto Care and to locate the lowest priced gas near your home.

THIS SEASON, DONT LET PUMP PRICES PUT A DAMPER ON YOUR HOLIDAY FUN
By Trisha Hessinger For NewsUSA | (NewsUSA) - Its easy to get caught up in the holiday hubbub when youre running around looking for the perfect gift. While the holidays can be expensive, there are ways to save. Firestone Complete Auto Care offers the following tips to help you save money at the gas pump so you can focus on your holiday celebrations.
2011 NEW YEARS RESOLUTION: START TAKING BETTER CARE OF YOUR VEHICLE
(NewsUSA) - While we might slip up on our New Years resolutions at times, this year you can resolve to take better care of your car all year. Firestone Complete Auto Care offers the following tips for winter vehicle maintenance to get you started! Be proactive. Winter only magnies existing problems like pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. Make sure your vehicle is mechanically sound before the temperature dips and the streets get icy. Make certain the engine is in peak condition. Also check the cooling system. Coolant should be replaced per the vehicle manufacturers maintenance schedule. Be on schedule. Have your motor oil changed regularly. Use the specied weight and grade of oil recommended by your vehicle manufacturer. Also make sure to check that the heating/ defrosting system is working properly. Be prepared. Prepare for potential winter emergencies by using your trunk as a storage place for emergency items. Important items to have on hand include: a properly inated spare tire; ice scraper; windshield de-icer; ashlight; blanket; extra clothes; bottled water; cell phone car charger and nonperishable snacks. Be on the defensive. Take a defensive position against winter driving conditions, and take care of your tires. Once it gets cold, tire tread and pressure should be checked weekly. A tires PSI measurement can drop one pound for every 10-degree drop in temperature. If snow and ice are a problem in your area, consider installing winter tires, which are specially designed to grip slick roads. Be diligent. Use common sense during adverse road conditions. Reduce your driving speed, and increase your
Slow Down and Get Some Air Vehicles use less fuel the slower they travel. While staying within the speed limits, try dropping your highway speed by 10 mph to see big savings at the pump. Calm down. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, aggressive driving can lower your gas mileage by 33 percent on the highway and by 5 percent in the city. Fuel Up Buy the right fuel. Look in your vehicles owners manual for the correct octane level for your vehicles engine. Odds are that it will be regular unleaded, since fewer than 5 percent of the vehicles on the road require the use of premium fuel. Drop Some Pounds Extra weight in your vehicle makes it work harder, hence less fuel mileage. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, an extra 100 pounds in the car can reduce a vehicles fuel economy by up to 2 percent. If you have a trunk full of junk, empty it out for better fuel economy. The holiday season can stretch your wallet pretty thin. By following just a few small steps, youll have more to spend on holiday festivities.
| (NewsUSA) - If you ask anyone, whether it be your friends, your neighbors or your colleagues, all will tell you the best things about summer are the surf and the sun! For many of us, a day at the beach is like a mini-vacation, but if youre not prepared, your lovely day trip can turn into your worst nightmare! The team at Firestone
BEFORE SUMMER FUN, MAKE SURE YOUR VEHICLE CAN HANDLE THE HEAT
(NewsUSA) - Parents need to be prepared for back-to-school season as 85 percent of all school districts report at least one outbreak a year. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that most of the 12 million cases occur in preschool and elementary-school-aged children. Fortunately, parents can now help to prevent head lice using natural, safe and effective ingredients.Arecent study by Fairy Tales Hair Care showed that rosemary, citronella, tea tree and lavender oils were over 93 percent effective in preventing head lice. Daily use of shampoos and sprays help keep the fragrance fresh on the childs hair and keep lice away. In addition to natural products, Fairy Tales recommends the following tips: Explain to your children to never share hats, combs, pillows, ear buds or

helmets. Keep long hair up in a pony tail or braid. Lice like clean hair -- not dirty! Dont shampoo every day, and use products to coat the hair shaft making it hard for a louse to attach to it. Do weekly head checks. Sit under a bright light and comb through tiny sections of the hair -- focusing on the hot spots, such as the back of neck, behind ears and the part lines. Nits (eggs) will be grayish in color and glued ? inch from the top of the hair shaft. If it is hard to remove, it is a nit and not dandruff. Lice-removal treatments are now available that are more effective and safer than traditional over-the-counter products. Enzymes dissolve the nit glue so eggs/nits wash out easily and kill live bugs on contact. Enzymes work on the new breed of super lice as well. Lice Good-Bye can be used repeatedly, allowing parents to safely remove lice and get children back to school quickly and lice free. To learn more, visit www.fairytaleshaircare. com.
BALANCING ACT: TIPS FOR ADULT LEARNERS JUGGLING THE RESPONSIBILITIES OF WORK AND
(NewsUSA) - Balancing work and the commitment of earning an advanced degree can be daunting. But it is a reality
many adult learners face as they continue their education while juggling personal, family and nancial responsibilities. The good news is that there are many tips and resources available to help ease stress and make balancing work and school manageable. 1. Capitalize on exible class scheduling. An increasing number of colleges and universities are tailoring education to suit working students schedules. DeVry University, for example, offers exible scheduling in a mix and match format that allows students to enroll in a combination of onsite or online courses during the day or evening, based on convenience. 2. Make a schedule and stay organized. A calendar that outlines upcoming work and school projects, meetings and deadlines takes little time to create and can make a busy schedule feel under control. Time management is an essential quality and core competency for most professionals, and this will be a good test of ones mettle, explained Jeffrey Greenberg, director of career services for DeVry University. This skill gets easier over time and will ensure that your work does not pile up, preventing you from meeting deadlines. 3. Address your stress. The weight of multiple obligations can be overwhelming. Its important to take breaks to obtain a fresh perspective. Exercise and social interaction provide the perfect opportunity to relieve stress and refocus your thoughts, allowing you to return to coursework with a clear mind and renewed sense of energy.
4. Take advantage of your schools resources. The network of classmates and professors your school offers can provide support and advice for balancing work and school. The economic recession has led many schools to launch career services departments or strengthen existing ones. 5. Create a support network. Harness the support of friends and family, and see if they can help you accomplish your goals. This support could be something as simple as meeting with a roommate to plan household chores or meals for the month. It is important to remember that the hard work and sacrice required to balance work and school often lead to career success.
embarrassment of having had to wear that dress in the rst place. Where to start? The concept is simple -- invite all of your girlfriends over, and tell them to wear their most hideous bridesmaid dress. Not only will you get to rewear the bridesmaids dresses of weddings past, youll also get to laugh at some of the more hideous outts. Note: if you were a bridesmaid at a friends wedding, either dont invite her or try not to wear the dress she chose, even if it does include a tutu and puffed sleeves. Adding an inexpensive spin to classic elegance is the way to go. Skip the chips and dip in favor of a fruit-and-cheese platter. For a refreshing twist on champagne, the traditional wedding libation, pick up a few bottles of a fruit-avored sparkling wine. Arbor Mist (arbormist.com), which is known for fruit and wine combinations like Strawberry White Zinfandel and Blackberry Merlot, has recently released a line of sparkling wines. Both the Peach Sparkle and the Raspberry Sparkle combine light and crisp sparkling wine with natural fruit, creating the perfect refreshment for a gettogether with your girlfriends. For entertainment, ask each woman to tell the story behind her bridesmaid dress. You can also have fun playing a weddingthemed round of Pictionary or charades. You can also hold a vote to nd out, for once and for all, which one of you had to endure the wearing the worst bridesmaid dress. For more information about Arbor Mist wines, visit www.arbormist.com.
