Bangalore: Nearly 1,000 CCTV cameras are going to keep a watch over the city. The move by the city police, in association with resident welfare and merchants associations, is to prevent the increasing number of crimes. The city has been witnessing an increase in the number of crime as the population has been zooming over the last few years. The closed-circuit TV cameras across the city would act as a deterrent and would also help the police in crime detection. Joint commissioner of police (crime) Alok Kumar told Bangalore Beat: This is a private initiative. We in association with resident welfare associations, shop owners association, industrial associations etc will set up CCTV cameras across various locations of the city like industrial areas, shopping complexes etc. This will help us monitor the city well and we hope to reduce thefts mainly of lap-

Bangalore: Notorious rowdy Palani, who was involved in a number of cases of extortion, goodaism, theft and murder, was arrested in the city today. Palani, who hails from Tamil Nadu, had been missing for a long time. More than 15 criminal cases had been registered against him at various police stations in the city. The police said that he used to sneak in and out of the city and often visited Chennai, his hometown. City police commissioner Jyothi Prakash Mirji, after taking charge, had asked the City Crime Branch officials to arrest him as he had become a pest to society. The CCB police spread the net, gathered intelligence on his movements and arrested him at KG Halli this morning. The anti-social has been booked under Goonda Act. India opens up remote sensing data sector

Bangalore: At a colourful passing out parade held at the Madras Engineer Group and Centre here yesterday, 219 recruits took oath on completion of basic and field engineering training. The parade, which marked the culmination of one-and-half year of training of soldiers, was reviewed by Lieutenant General S S Sengupta, Colonel Commandant of Madras Sappers and commanded by Sapper N Venkateswara Reddy. Four contingents of smartly dressed soldiers with blue Dooptas and Ceremonial Turban on the heads, gold and maroon coloured jari bands on their waists and spotless white spade on their boots marched proudly to the tunes of military band, according to a Defence release. The soldiers displayed high sprit and confidence when they marched past the saluting dais. The parade was also witnessed by the proud parents of the soldiers who had finished the training and joining the elite Madras Sapper units. Lt Gen Sengupta exhorted the sappers to imbibe not only the tradition of valour and sacrifice of Madras Sappers, but also the modern day technology skills. The chief guest also presented the trophies and medal to sappers who excelled in the training. The Bhakthavachalam Trophy for the best in overall performance was presented to Sapper Moresh Patel and Sapper Govinda Raj. The best in Drill medal was presented to Sapper N Venkateshwara Reddy, the Best in Physical Training to Sapper Jayesh, the Best in Weapon Training to Sapper Pradeep and the Best in Field Engineering to Sapper Janagaraj M. Hiring activity picked up significantly last month, with increased employment opportunities in the IT and ITeS sectors, says Naukri.com. Indicating better labour market conditions, Naukri.coms Job Speak Index rose 4 percent in June, compared to May. Compared with June last year, the index climbed as much as 19 percent. The index is an indicator of monthly demand for jobs online. According to leading job portal Naukri.com, both the IT and ITES sectors indices climbed 12 percent last month in comparison to May. Key functional areas like software services and sales registered an upward movement in hiring activity in June, it said in a statement. Further, recruitment activity improved in the pharma, biotech and insurance sectors. The talent market is driven by demand and supply, Info Edge India Managing Director and CEO Hitesh Oberoi said. ... Economic slowdown may not necessarily affect the pace of hiring, he added. Info Edge owns Naukri.com. However, the telecom sector reported a 17 percent drop in hiring activities in June, the maximum dip for the segment in the last one year. Chairman for backward classes panel soon: CM

Bangalore: The state government is seriously thinking of appointing a chairman for the backward classes commission, said chief minister B S Yeddyurappa here this morning. Offering floral tributes on the 25 death anniversary of former deputy Prime Minister Babu Jagjivan Ram in front of Vidhana Soudha this morning, he said the post that had been lying vacant for more than six months would be filled as soon as possible. The BJP government is committed to the development of backward classes and has done a lot of work for this community, he claimed. He praised the contribution of Jagjivan Ram in uplifting dalits and suppressed classes while he was the Union minister. Union labour minister Mallikarjun M Kharge said, He contributed a lot for the uplift of the backward and dalit communities. As Union defence and agriculture minister, he handled his portfolios with lan. On the illegal encroachment of 12 lakh acres in the state as pointed out by government lands conservation task force chairman V Balasubramanian, Yeddyurapa said that he would talk to the officials concerned and take action. Woman hangs self over dowry demand

Ramanagara: A woman committed suicide by hanging herself from the ceiling fan at her residence here this morning. The deceased has been identified as Pushpalatha (22) from Hunasanahalli in Channapatna taluk, the police said. Pushpalatha had been married to Muthuraj for the last eight months. He was harassing her for dowry and there had been an ongoing dispute between Muthuraj and his in-laws, the police added. Muthuraj and his relatives have fled the house after the suicide, the police said.

Bangalore: The NR Colony maternity hospital will be converted into a hi-tech facility by entering into an agreement with prominent hospitals in the city, BBMP commissioner Siddaiah has said. Local corporator Katte Sathyanarayana said the hospital was inaugurated by Mysore Maharaja Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar in 1962. There was a time when more than 1,500 deliveries were performed per year at this hospital. Hyderabad: Life remained paralysed across Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh Wednesday, the second day of the 48-hour shutdown called by Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) to demand a separate state of Telangana. Public transport remained crippled in Hyderabad and nine other districts of the region as over 10,000 buses of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) continued to remain off the roads. Shops, business establishments, hotels, petrol bunks and educational institutions were shut on the second consecutive day. Commuters in Hyderabad, especially those arriving at railway stations had a harrowing time as APSRTC city services remained suspended while a few autorickshaws and cabs charged exorbitant fares. The local train or Multi-Modal Transport System Services were also cancelled for the second day. With APSRTC employees too joining the strike, not a single bus can come out of bus depots. The shutdown forced APSRTC to suspend all services between Hyderabad and other cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and Tirupati. The corporation, which suffered a loss of Rs.9 crore on the first day, plans to resume services in the evening. The coal production in Singareni Collieries Company Limited was affected for the second day as a majority of nearly 100,000 employees in the mines, spread over four Telangana districts, refused to work. 6 cops hurt in J&K blast

Srinagar: At least six policemen were injured today when militants triggered an IED explosion near a police station in Sopore in Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. Militants fired a rifle grenade at around 9.05 am, which landed and exploded in the police station premises, the officials said. As the policemen came out, the ultras triggered an IED planted on a scooter parked near the police station. Six policemen were injured in the IED explosion, the officials said, adding that the condition of four of them is stated to be critical. Security forces have cordoned off the area.

Melbourne: Australia today announced that it was slashing the aid it provides to the fast growing economies of India and China, even as it boosts spending in South-East Asia, the Pacific Islands, Middle East and Africa. According to a report in The Australian daily, the countrys Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has announced the governments response to the first independent review of Australias aid programme in 15 years, accepting 38 of its 39 recommendations. The review led by former Sydney Olympics boss Sandy Hollway found the aid programme was good, but could be better with some tweaks. With the aid budget set to touch to over 8 billion Australian dollars over the next five years, Rudd said Australias nearest neighbours -- Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor -- would remain its top focus. It is the region which we believe that we can be most effective in, Rudd said.

It further added that it will make greater use of multilateral partners, civil society and Australian non-government organisations to deliver its aid. It also will develop a rolling four-year whole-of-aid budget strategy covering the aid efforts of all government agencies under a single coherent plan. The government has pledged to analyse the aid programmes progress every year and scrap programmes that are not delivering. It has also agreed to five-yearly independent reviews. The government will consider at a later date the reviews recommendation that the name of the foreign affairs portfolio be extended to include the words International Development. The government this year boosted aid by almost half a billion dollars to Australian 4.84 billion in 2011/12 about 0.35 per cent of gross national income (GNI). Rudd said the government remained committed to boosting aid spending to 0.5 per cent of GNI by 2015-16. PTI

Melbourne: Anxious parents of toddlers who start talking late can now heave a sigh of relief! A new study claims your kids are not at risk of having behavioural and emotional problems as they grow up than chatty children. Researchers at Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Australia have found late-talking children are no more likely to face behavioural and emotional problems when they grow up than toddlers whove normal language development. The study is the first of its kind to track language delay from two years of age through to late adolescence, say the Australian researchers whose findings have been published in the latest edition of the Pediatrics journal. Lead researcher Prof Andrew Whitehouse said that while late-talkers have increased levels of behavioural and emotional problems at two years of age, these problems tend not to continue. He said: Having a child who is not talking as much as other children can be very distressing for parents. Our findings suggest that parents should not be overly concerned that their late-talking toddler will have language and psychological difficulties later in childhood. We suggest that the behavioural and emotional problems identified at two years are due to the psychosocial difficulties of not being able to communicate. But when late- talking children catchup to normal language milestones, the behavioural and emotional problems are no longer apparent. In fact, the study examined 1387 children, with 1245 children achieving normal language by two years of age and 142 classed as late-talkers (9.9 per cent). The analysis was drawn from a parent-completed Language Development Survey at two years of age and the Child Behaviour Checklist completed at 2, 5, 8, 10, 14 and 17 years of age. Dr Whitehouse said the results offer reassurance to parents of late-talkers that their language delay is not in itself a risk factor for later behavioural and emotional problems. We assessed the children at two years of age and at several time-points up to 17 years and found that while the late-talkers had increased levels of psychosocial problems at age two, theyre at no more risk for these problems later. There is good evidence that most late-talking children will catch-up to the language skills of other children. The best thing that parents can do is provide a rich language-learning environment for their children. This means getting down on the floor and playing their child, talking with them, reading to them, interacting with them, he said. PTI

Paris: Lying around for long stretches outside of work doubles the risk of dangerous blood clots in the lungs, according to a study among women released today. The study looked at the risk of pulmonary embolism blood clots in the lungs that typically arise from a vein constriction in the legs among 69,950 female nurses over an 18-year period. Previous research has highlighted a number of factors for this condition, including age, immobility on long-haul flights, obesity, smoking and hypertension. The new research suggests that a sedentary lifestyle can be added to the list. Over the 18-year study period, there were 268 cases of pulmonary embolism. The risk more than doubled in women who spent more than 41 hours a week sitting down outside the workplace compared to those who were seated for less than 10 hours per week. Results held even after age, weight and tobacco consumption were taken into account. The study, published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), is led by Christopher Kabrhel at Massachusetts General Hospital. Researchers called for further work to see if the results also applied to men, and to people not of European origin. They also pointed out that the mean age of the women studied was 55, leaving open the question of whether younger women would be subject to the same risks. AFP London: Women with repeated miscarriages need not to be disheartened, as their chances of having a healthy baby is the same as those who have never miscarried, scientists have claimed. The assurance, which comes from a Swedish conference, is likely to offer some comfort to the one per cent of couples who have lost three or more pregnancies in a row through no known cause, the BBC reported. Most recurrent miscarriages are unexplained, meaning there is no obvious cause and no treatment to offer. But researchers said they can now offer couples more accurate information to help them when they are considering whether or not they want to keep trying for a baby. Two new studies, presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology meet in Stockholm, followed the outcomes of women with unexplained recurrent miscarriage. The first a Danish study that involved nearly 1,000 women found two-thirds went on to have at least one child within five years of being referred to a recurrent miscarriage clinic, but often within a year of being seen. The second study, carried out in the Netherlands with 213 women, found more than 70 per cent became pregnant after a year of trying for a baby, rising to over 80 per cent or eight out of 10 after two years women with recurrent miscarriage can be reassured that their time to a subsequent conception is not significantly longer than that for fertile women without a history of miscarriage. While other studies have shown the damaging effects of polluted air on the heart and lungs, this is one of the first long-term studies to show the negative impact on the brain, said Laura Fonken, lead author of the study that appeared online in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. The results suggest prolonged exposure to polluted air can have visible, negative effects on the brain, which can lead to a variety of health problems, Fonken said. This could have important and troubling implications for people who live and work in polluted urban areas around the world. In this study, the researchers exposed mice to either filtered air or polluted air for six hours a day, five days a week for 10 months nearly half the lifespan of the mice. The polluted air contained fine particulate matter, the kind of pollution created by cars, factories and natural dust, which are about 2.5 micrometers in diameter and can reach deep areas of the lungs and other organs of the body. After 10 months of exposure, the researchers performed a variety of behavioural tests on the animals. In a learning and memory test, mice were placed in the middle of a brightly lit arena and given two minutes to find an escape hole leading to a dark box where they feel more comfortable. They were given five days of training to locate the escape hole, but the mice who
breathed the polluted air took longer to learn where the escape hole was located. The mice exposed to polluted air also were less likely to remember where the escape hole was when tested later. In another experiment, mice exposed to the polluted air showed more depressive-like behaviours than did the mice that breathed the filtered air. The polluted-air mice showed signs of higher levels of anxiety-like behaviours in one test, but not in another. But how does air pollution lead to these changes in learning, memory and mood? The researchers did tests on the hippocampal area of the mice brains to find the answers. Results showed that clear physical differences in the hippocampi of the mice who were exposed to polluted air compared to those who werent. The researchers looked specifically at branches that grow off of nerve cells (or neurons) called dendrites. The dendrites have small projections growing off them called spines, which transmit signals from one neuron to another. Mice exposed to polluted air had fewer spines in parts of the hippocampus, shorter dendrites and overall reduced cell complexity. PTI

London: Commonly used painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin can increase the risk of developing an irregular heart rhythm by up to 40 per cent, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal. The anti-inflammatories have been previously linked to a higher chance of heart attacks and strokes. Now, researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark have shown for the first time a connection between the drugs and atrial fibrillation, also known as irregular heart rhythm or flutter. The condition is more common than heart failure and stroke, and is linked to a higher long-term risk of developing both, say the researchers. However, the threat was lower in patients who had been using the drugs for longer than two months because people who were susceptible were likely to experience symptoms early on, the researchers said. They claimed the study adds evidence that atrial fibrillation or flutter needs to be added to cardiovascular risks under consideration when prescribing NSAIDs. The researchers hope to do further trials to establish which patients are most likely to experience the dangerous side effects from the drugs, Prof Srensen said. In an editorial accompanying the study, Prof Jerry Gurwitz of Massachusetts Medical School in the US said doctors should be cautious when prescribing NSAIDS to older patients with a history of hypertension or heart failure. Washington: Chinas rapid industrial growth helped ease the pace of global warming in the last decade, according to a new study. But greenhouse gases are heating things up again. While the decade of the 2000s was one of the hottest on record, the pace of warming had eased until 2009 and 2010, when temperatures lurched upward. The reason for the seeming plateau, according to the study, was the added sulphur polluting the atmosphere from the sharp increase in coal-burning industrial activity in China. Whats going on is, human activities do two things: They cool the planet and they warm the planet. People normally just focus on the warming effect of CO2 (carbon dioxide), but during the Chinese economic expansion there was a huge increase in sulphur emissions, which have a cooling effect, explained Robert K Kaufmann of Boston University, lead author of the new study published Yesterday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. Chinese coal consumption doubled between 2003 and 2007, and that caused a 26 per cent increase in global coal consumption, Kaufmann said. That was about the same as the worldwide increase in coal use in the previous 22 years, he said. So what took 22 years now took four years, and it started at a higher level. Now, China has recognised the impacts on its environment and on its citizens health and are installing equipment to scrub out the sulphur particles, Kaufmann said. Sulphur quickly drops out of the air if it is not replenished, while CO2 remains for a long time, so the warming from CO2 is beginning to be visible again, he noted. Indeed, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have listed 2010 as tied for the warmest year on record, while the Hadley Center of the British Meteorological Office lists it as second warmest, after 1998. Some have even suggested that injecting sulphur compounds into the atmosphere might help ease global warming by increasing clouds and haze that would reflect sunlight, but an earlier study concluded that would be a bad idea. ollywood choreographer Terence Lewis dance company has been invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the Impulstanz Dance Festival in Vienna. He says it is a privilege to showcase the Hindi film industry on an international platform. Impulstanz Dance Festival, one of the largest dance festivals in the world, has been held every July for the 28 years. Choreographers and teachers from across the world teach and perform various dance forms. Members of the Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company will leave on July 9 for Vienna and their show is scheduled for July 14. The TLCDC will stage its production Jhoom on July 14. It is a 30 minute extravaganza, bringing to the stage the very essence of India, wrapped in the colours and sounds of Bollywood. Jhoom is the perfect ground where Indian culture and tradition meet the new age glitz and gloss of mainstream Bollywood, Lewis, the artistic director of TLCDC, said. It is an absolute privilege to showcase Bollywood on an international platform. The production is an interesting colourful potpourri of folk, the classical form and the current day kitsch. Jhoom is an ode to this Bollywood fantasy, added the 36-year-old, who choreographed for films like Shikhar and Naach.
