Roseau (Dominica): Indian pace spearhead Ishant Sharma is set to play the final cricket Test against the West Indies here on Wednesday despite carrying the after effects of a collision with teammate Praveen Kumar on his face. Ishant largely stood aside during the only practice session ahead of the decisive Test at Windsor Park on Tuesday, giving rise to speculation that he may not be fit enough to bowl. That speculation was soon put to rest when Ishant sent down deliveries at full tilt to Rahul Dravid in the nets. Ishant was hit below his left eye by a leaping Praveen in a football session on Monday. It left a deep bruise around his eye. Ishant carried a band-aid over his injury during the session but there is no wor-

Meanwhile, it almost looked certain that Murali Vijay and Virat Kohli, two young Indian batsmen who have been unsuccessful in the two Tests, would get another extension in the final game. Parthiv Patel and Subramaniam Badrinath, two options considered in place of Vijay and Kohli by experts, didnt even get to bat in the net session, putting an end to all speculation on their inclusion. Munaf Patel, who missed the first two Tests due to an elbow injury, bowled at full tilt at batsmen and is favourite to replace Abhimanyu Mithun in the playing eleven. India are likely to go with three seamers and a spinner for the Test. India are leading 1-0 in the three-Test series. PTI

from the depth of yourself, when you let go all that you hold on to and settle down being centered in that space. If for the whole day, you are engaged in only gathering information; you do not take out time for yourself to think and reflect you feel dull and tired. The quality of your life deteriorates. So some time during the day, take out some moments for yourself. Sit for a few minutes, get into the cave of your heart, eyes closed, and kick the world away like a ball. Only when you are calm and pleasant inside can you spread it in your outside world. The higher goals in life can only be realised through a few minutes of meditation and introspection. The deeper you are able to rest, the more dynamic your performance will be and the more dynamic will you be in activity. Even though deep rest and dynamic activity are opposite values, they are complementary. All our struggles in life are to know

more. Theres always something to share, learn and teach. Always be open to learn. Do not restrict yourself, dont limit yourself. Communicate with others, share ideas, share information and seek the same. When you are centered, you become a powerful communicator. And when your communication improves, your life improves. You should plan your short and long-term goals. Then, life gets a channel, a direction to flow. Give yourself the freedom to dream and think big. Have the courage and determination to achieve those dreams that are dear to you. Then life will be a sweet dream. This world is varied and beyond our imagination. We are all born in this world to do something wonderful and unique; do not let this opportunity pass by. Start living life rather than just existing. Hyderabad: Life remained paralysed across Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh Wednesday, the second day of the 48-hour shutdown called by Telangana Joint Action Committee (JAC) to demand a separate state of Telangana. Public transport remained crippled in Hyderabad and nine other districts of the region as over 10,000 buses of Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) continued to remain off the roads. Shops, business establishments, hotels, petrol bunks and educational institutions were shut on the second consecutive day. Commuters in Hyderabad, especially those arriving at railway stations had a harrowing time as APSRTC city services remained suspended while a few autorickshaws and cabs charged exorbitant fares. The local train or Multi-Modal Transport System Services were also cancelled for the second day. With APSRTC employees too joining the strike, not a single bus can come out of bus depots. The shutdown forced APSRTC to suspend all services between Hyderabad and other cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Kurnool and Tirupati. The corporation, which suffered a loss of Rs.9 crore on the first day, plans to resume services in the evening. The coal production in Singareni Collieries Company Limited was affected for the second day as a majority of nearly 100,000 employees in the mines, spread over four Telangana districts, refused to work. The company is likely to suffer loss of another Rs.20 crore on the second day. The usually busy roads in Nampallay, Basheerbagh, Khairatabad, Himayatnagar, Koti, Mehdipatnam, Se-

A bench of Justices Altamas Kabir and Cyriac Joseph rejected the plea of the accused that the trial in the BJP-ruled state could not be held in a free and fair manner owing to the surcharged G S Ravishankar communal atmosphere in the aftermath of the 2002 Godhra massacre. The apex court said things have considerably settled down after the Godhra killings and hence the claim of the accused that the trial could not be held in a fair manner was mere apprehension. It, however, granted liberty to the accused to move the court again if and when there were genuine apprehensions of the trial being held in a vitiated atmosphere. The apex court had earlier in 2009 stayed the trial against the accused after the latter sought transfer of the cases outside the state on the ground that the prosecution and the investigating agencies were totally biased in favour of the ruling party. 6 cops hurt in J&K blast

Srinagar: At least six policemen were injured today when militants triggered an IED explosion near a police station in Sopore in Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir, officials said. Militants fired a rifle grenade at around 9.05 am, which landed and exploded in the police station premises, the officials said. As the policemen came out, the ultras triggered an IED planted on a scooter parked near the police station. Six policemen were injured in the IED explosion, the officials said, adding that the condition of four of them is stated to be critical. Security forces have cordoned off the area.

Taliban as terrorist group

Toronto: Canada has banned the dreaded militant outfit Pakistani Taliban, designating it as a terrorist group, linking it to New Yorks Times Square bombing plot and plans to blow up the countrys Parliament in winter. Canada thus joins the US, UK and other western nations in blacklisting the Tehreek-e-Taliban which is based in Pakistans restive tribal region bordering Afghanistan. The ban is part of global effort to crackdown on terrorism wherever we find it, Foreign Minister John Baird was quoted as saying by Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. the Tehreek-e-Taliban on the terWhile the public safety Min- ror blacklist is an essential part ister, Vic Toews, said that putting of our efforts to combat terrorism and keep our communities safe. Melbourne: Australia today announced that it was slashing the aid it provides to the fast growing economies of India and China, even as it boosts spending in South-East Asia, the Pacific Islands, Middle East and Africa. According to a report in The Australian daily, the countrys Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd has announced the governments response to the first independent review of Australias aid programme in 15 years, accepting 38 of its 39 recommendations. The review led by former Sydney Olympics boss Sandy Hollway found the aid programme was good, but could be better with some tweaks. With the aid budget set to touch to over 8 billion Australian dollars over the next five years, Rudd said Australias nearest neighbours -- Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and East Timor -- would remain its top focus. It is the region which we believe that we can be most effective in, Rudd said.

Oz slashes aid budget for fastgrowing India, China Jaya leaves

He said, It is the region where the rest of the world often expects Australia to provide leadership. And it is the region of the world where our most direct, strategic and economic interests lie. Australia also will increase its aid to developing nations in East Asia and South Asia, but China and India no longer qualify. They are respectively the second and sixth largest economies in the world. Both have considerable economic capacity, Rudd said. And both have begun their own international development assistance programmes, he noted. Australia may continue to provide some assistance to the countries through multilateral organisations and regional programmes. The government will also boost its aid to the Middle East and Africa. The government said any future increases to Latin America and the Caribbean will be modest. It further added that it will make greater use of multilateral partners, civil society and Australian non-government organisations to deliver its aid. It also will develop a rolling four-year whole-of-aid budget strategy covering the aid efforts of all government agencies under a single coherent plan. The government has pledged to analyse the aid programmes progress every year and scrap programmes that are not delivering. It has also agreed to five-yearly independent reviews. The government will consider at a later date the reviews recommendation that the name of the foreign affairs portfolio be extended to include the words International Development. The government this year boosted aid by almost half a billion dollars to Australian 4.84 billion in 2011/12 about 0.35 per cent of gross national income (GNI). Rudd said the government remained committed to boosting aid spending to 0.5 per cent of GNI by 2015-16. PTI

Latetalking toddlers do fine later in life

Melbourne: Anxious parents of toddlers who start talking late can now heave a sigh of relief! A new study claims your kids are not at risk of having behavioural and emotional problems as they grow up than chatty children. Researchers at Telethon Institute for Child Health Research in Australia have found late-talking children are no more likely to face behavioural and emotional problems when they grow up than toddlers whove normal language development. The study is the first of its kind to track language delay from two years of age through to late adolescence, say the Australian researchers whose findings have been published in the latest edition of the Pediatrics journal. Lead researcher Prof Andrew Whitehouse said that while late-talkers have increased levels of behavioural and emotional problems at two years of age, these problems tend not to continue. He said: Having a child who is not talking as much as other children can be very distressing for parents. Our findings suggest that parents should not be overly concerned that their late-talking toddler will have language and psychological difficulties later in childhood. We suggest that the behavioural and emotional problems identified at two years are due to the psychosocial difficulties of not being able to communicate. But when late- talking children catchup to normal language milestones, the behavioural and emotional problems are no longer apparent. In fact, the study examined 1387 children, with 1245 children achieving normal language by two years of age and 142 classed as late-talkers (9.9 per cent). The analysis was drawn from a parent-completed Language Development Survey at two years of age and the Child Behaviour Checklist completed at 2, 5, 8, 10, 14 and 17 years of age. Dr Whitehouse said the results offer reassurance to parents of late-talkers that their language delay is not in itself a risk factor for later behavioural and emotional problems. We assessed the children at two years of age and at several time-points up to 17 years and found that while the late-talkers had increased levels of psychosocial problems at age two, theyre at no more risk for these problems later. There is good evidence that most late-talking children will catch-up to the language skills of other children. The best thing that parents can do is provide a rich language-learning environment for their children. This means getting down on the floor and playing their child, talking with them, reading to them, interacting with them, he said. PTI

ON, TAKE CARE

Bangalore Beat Bureau
t is the monsoon season. As you enjoy the rain and the cool weather, beware of the diseases this season brings along with it. Bangalore Beat spoke to some of the doctors in the city, and they caution you to take care of mainly three categories of diseases. Water-borne diseases: This includes all types of gastroenteritis, typhoid, cholera, jaundice, food poisoning and others where water is the main culprit and primary cause of all these diseases. Diseases spread by mosquitoes: Dengue, malaria, chicken gunya, H1N1 and few others. Mosquitoes are at their attacking best this season as they find enough puddles to breed. Indoor spread of diseases: In this category, those professionals who work in centralised air-conditioned offices should be cautious. Common diseases like cold, cough etc spread fast in closed environs and happens mainly indoors where there is lack of fresh air. More the room is crowded faster the spread of diseases. If any of your colleagues sneeze without covering their mouths properly, others too would get infected fast as there is no movement of fresh air to carry away the bacteria. As compared to last year, the number of cases of typhoid and hepatitis-b has reduced this year. But we feel that the number of food poisoning cases have been more. Always prevention is better than cure. So those who have not taken vaccines should do so now. Especially the elderly should get themselves vaccinated as their immunity is low, said Dr Veerendra Sandur, gastroenterologist at Fortis Hospitals. You can keep the diseases at bay by taking these precautionary measures: l Always consume freshly prepared food. Wash your hands cleanly after passing motion. Wash your hands with an antiseptic before consuming food. l Drink water only after boiling and cooling it. If it is difficult, you can consume filtered water. l Follow a healthy lifestyle. Do not consume uncovered foods which are sold on the streets. Be cautious when consuming bakery products, preserved food and chaats. l Do not allow water to stagnate in and around your premises as mosquitoes breed in these puddles. Make sure that all your water bodies like over head tanks, sump are covered. l Control the mosquito menace by either using a mosquito net or repellant. l If you are an asthma patient, get all your jackets and mufflers which will keep you warm as there could be sudden drop in tem- toms for some life-threatening diseases. But there is some good news. Couch potatoes double risk of lung blood clots
Paris: Lying around for long stretches outside of work doubles the risk of dangerous blood clots in the lungs, according to a study among women released today. The study looked at the risk of pulmonary embolism blood clots in the lungs that typically arise from a vein constriction in the legs among 69,950 female nurses over an 18-year period. Previous research has highlighted a number of factors for this condition, including age, immobility on long-haul flights, obesity, smoking and hypertension. The new research suggests that a sedentary lifestyle can be added to the list. Over the 18-year study period, there were 268 cases of pulmonary embolism. The risk more than doubled in women who spent more than 41 hours a week sitting down outside the workplace compared to those who were seated for less than 10 hours per week. Results held even after age, weight and tobacco consumption were taken into account. The study, published online by the British Medical Journal (BMJ), is led by Christopher Kabrhel at Massachusetts General Hospital. Researchers called for further work to see if the results also applied to men, and to people not of European origin. They also pointed out that the mean age of the women studied was 55, leaving open the question of whether younger women would be subject to the same risks. AFP London: Women with repeated miscarriages need not to be disheartened, as their chances of having a healthy baby is the same as those who have never miscarried, scientists have claimed. The assurance, which comes from a Swedish conference, is likely to offer some comfort to the one per cent of couples who have lost three or more pregnancies in a row through no known cause, the BBC reported. Most recurrent miscarriages are unexplained, meaning there is no obvious cause and no treatment to offer. But researchers said they can now offer couples more accurate information to help them when they are considering whether or not they want to keep trying for a baby. Two new studies, presented at the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology meet in Stockholm, followed the outcomes of women with unexplained recurrent miscarriage. The first a Danish study that involved nearly 1,000 women found two-thirds went on to have at least one child within five years of being referred to a recurrent miscarriage clinic, but often within a year of being seen. The second study, carried out in the Netherlands with 213 women, found more than 70 per cent became pregnant after a year of trying for a baby, rising to over 80 per cent or eight out of 10 after two years women with recurrent miscarriage can be reassured that their time to a subsequent conception is not significantly longer than that for fertile women without a history of miscarriage. Recurrent miscarriage is extremely stressful for these women and we hope that our study will give them hope and encourage them to keep trying for the baby they want so much. A spokeswoman for the British Miscarriage Association said: One of the big issues for women going for investigation for recurrent miscarriage is that they expect answers. For them, a diagnosis means treatment and treatment equals a baby. But that is not always the case. Finding no underlying cause could be good news because it means they have a good chance in the future of becoming pregnant and having a healthy baby, she added. Professor Siobhan Quenby, consultant obstetrician at Warwick Medical School in the UK, said she would be using the findings to help counsel her patients. PTI Washington: Prolonged exposure to dirty air can have visible negative effects on the brain which may lead to learning and memory problems, and even cause depression, a new study has claimed. Researchers at the Ohio State University in the US carried out tests on mice and found that long term exposure to air pollution caused physical changes to their brain which in turn had negative effects. While other studies have shown the damaging effects of polluted air on the heart and lungs, this is one of the first long-term studies to show the negative impact on the brain, said Laura Fonken, lead author of the study that appeared online in the journal Molecular Psychiatry. The results suggest prolonged exposure to polluted air can have visible, negative effects on the brain, which can lead to a variety of health problems, Fonken said. This could have important and troubling implications for people who live and work in polluted urban areas around the world. In this study, the researchers exposed mice to either filtered air or polluted air for six hours a day, five days a week for 10 months nearly half the lifespan of the mice. The polluted air contained fine particulate matter, the kind of pollution created by cars, factories and natural dust, which are about 2.5 micrometers in diameter and can reach deep areas of the lungs and other organs of the body. After 10 months of exposure, the researchers performed a variety of behavioural tests on the animals. In a learning and memory test, mice were placed in the middle of a brightly lit arena and given two minutes to find an escape hole leading to a dark box where they feel more comfortable. They were given five days of training to locate the escape hole, but the mice who

breathed the polluted air took longer to learn where the escape hole was located. The mice exposed to polluted air also were less likely to remember where the escape hole was when tested later. In another experiment, mice exposed to the polluted air showed more depressive-like behaviours than did the mice that breathed the filtered air. The polluted-air mice showed signs of higher levels of anxiety-like behaviours in one test, but not in another. But how does air pollution lead to these changes in learning, memory and mood? The researchers did tests on the hippocampal area of the mice brains to find the answers. Results showed that clear physical differences in the hippocampi of the mice who were exposed to polluted air compared to those who werent. The researchers looked specifically at branches that grow off of nerve cells (or neurons) called dendrites. The dendrites have small projections growing off them called spines, which transmit signals from one neuron to another. Mice exposed to polluted air had fewer spines in parts of the hippocampus, shorter dendrites and overall reduced cell complexity. PTI

Death toll up as Hama defies Syria army

Damascus: Security forces killed at least 11 people in Hama yesterday, while residents mobilised to keep Syrias army out, activists said as the United States urged the regime to withdraw from the flashpoint city. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, quoting medical sources, said the casualty toll had risen to 11 dead and more than 35 wounded in Hama, the hub of an anti-regime revolt which has been surrounded by the military. Heavy gunfire has been heard in several districts of the city, it said. The group said the body of one of those killed was dumped in the Orontes river of Hama, which is famous for its ancient watermills. The activists, contacted by telephone from Nicosia, said a child was among three people shot dead by security forces on Monday on the outskirts of the city, north of Damascus, that is home to 800,000 people. Tanks are now posted at access routes to the city except for the northern entrance, said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of the London-based Syrian Observatory. Residents have mobilised. Theyre

Gaddafi to step down if security guaranteed

Moscow: Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has said he would step down if his security is guaranteed, a Russian official said. The colonel (Gaddafi) is sending signals that he is prepared to relinquish power in exchange for security guarantees, the unnamed Russian official said. The Russian newspaper described him as a high-level source in the Russian leadership. France was willing to provide these guarantees, the official said. Gaddafi wants his son Saif alIslam to be allowed to run in elections if he steps down, the Kommersant said. The Libyan government has said it was in talks with opposition leaders, but the rebels continue to demand that Gaddafi stand down and leave Libya. The Interfax news agency quoted Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, head of the world chess federation FIDE, as saying that Gaddafis oldest son Muhammad Gaddafi told him that Western forces were stationed in the capital Tripoli to kill the Libyan leader. Nearly 200 drown as boat catches fire o Sudan

Khartoum: Around 200 people, presumably illegal migrants to Saudi Arabia, drowned when their vessel caught fire in the Red Sea off Sudan late yesterday, Sudanese media reported. In all 197 people died in the incident, the Sudanese Media Centre news agency said. Three people were rescued, and a search for possible survivors was launched, officials said. The boat was flying a Cuban flag. Four Yemeni nationals, suspected to be owners of the boat, have been detained. In another incident, a second boat with 247 migrants onboard mostly nationals of Somalia, Eritrea, Chad, and Nigeria was detained while travelling in the same sea area. IANS

Sanaa: At least 40 militants linked to al-Qaida have been killed in two days of airstrikes and clashes with government forces, Yemens state news agency said yesterday. The report by the SABA news agency said the government attacks began after militants tried to storm a military camp in the southern province of Abyan, where Islamist fighters have seized control of several towns. The militant takeovers are part of widening chaos in Yemen since protests broke out in February calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, who is being treated in Saudi Arabia for wounds sustained in an attack on his palace last month. The SABA report added that two government soldiers were killed and 20 others injured in the Abyan fighting. Networking sites

London: Worried for your childs obsession for Internet and social networking sites? You are not alone, researchers say. According to a British study, a third of all parents in the country think Internet is a danger for their kids while 80 per cent believe their children are getting addicted to social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. The study, commissioned by Internet charity the Nominet Trust, also found that a third of parents even believe that Internet can rewire a persons brain, the Daily Telegraph repoted. The Nominet Trust, however, said there is no evidence that social networks are harmful in themselves, and that there is no neurological evidence of the web changing brains. Facebook and Twitter, they suggested, usually in fact reinforce existing friendships, while even playing video games has been show to improve coordination and visual processing skills. Painkillers linked to irregular heart rhythm

London: Commonly used painkillers like ibuprofen and aspirin can increase the risk of developing an irregular heart rhythm by up to 40 per cent, according to a new study published in the British Medical Journal. The anti-inflammatories have been previously linked to a higher chance of heart attacks and strokes. Now, researchers at Aarhus University Hospital in Denmark have shown for the first time a connection between the drugs and atrial fibrillation, also known as irregular heart rhythm or flutter. The condition is more common than heart failure and stroke, and is linked to a higher long-term risk of developing both, say the researchers. Confirming the results, Prof Henrik Toft Srensen, who led the study, however, said that heart disease patients should not stop taking the drugs, but they should discuss the potential risks with their doctor. creases your risk from a very low level to The absolute risk is still low. It in- a higher but still low level, he was quoted by The Daily Telegraph as saying. For their study, the researchers examined the records of 32,602 hospital patients with flutter between 1999 and 2009 and compared each to 10 randomly selected control patients. The subjects who had recently begun using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDS), which include ibuprofen and aspirin, were found to have a 40 per cent higher chance of flutter, equivalent to about four extra cases per year per 1,000 people. Newer forms of the drugs known as selective COX-2 inhibitors, were associated with a 70 per cent higher risk in new users, or seven more cases per 1000 people each year, the findings revealed. Older people were found to be most at risk from the drugs, and patients with chronic kidney disease or rheumatoid arthritis were particularly vulnerable when starting cox-2 inhibitors, say the researchers. However, the threat was lower in patients who had been using the drugs for longer than two months because people who were susceptible were likely to experience symptoms early on, the researchers said. They claimed the study adds evidence that atrial fibrillation or flutter needs to be added to cardiovascular risks under consideration when prescribing NSAIDs. The researchers hope to do further trials to establish which patients are most likely to experience the dangerous side effects from the drugs, Prof Srensen said. In an editorial accompanying the study, Prof Jerry Gurwitz of Massachusetts Medical School in the US said doctors should be cautious when prescribing NSAIDS to older patients with a history of hypertension or heart failure. He said the research had important clinical and public health implications because of the high use of the drugs and the increasing threat of flutter with advancing age. IANS

Twin blast kills 37 at Iraqi office

Baghdad: A car packed with explosives and a roadside bomb went off back-to-back outside a municipal building north of Baghdad yesterday, killing 37 people and wounding 54, Iraqi police and a hospital doctor said. The twin blasts in Taji, a Sunni-dominated town about 20 km from the Iraqi capital, were the latest in a series of attacks across Iraq. They came at a time of public debate over whether to ask the United States to keep some American troops here past their year-end withdrawal deadline from the country. It was awful ... some of the lightly wounded people were running in all directions, either crying or screaming for help, a policeman who identified himself only by his nickname, Abu Haider, said at the scene. He said he was not authorised to give his full name. Burned bodies were lying on the ground and about 20 cars were on fire, witnesses said. The assailants first detonated the car bomb around noon in the parking lot of Tajis local council building, police said. When civilians and security forces rushed to the scene to help the victims, the second bomb was detonated. The Iraqi army later sealed off the area, and at one point four ambulances were seen waiting for permission to evacuate the wounded. A doctor at Kazimiyah Hospital outside Baghdad who saw the bodies confirmed the casualty figures. He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to brief the media. Maj Gen Qassim al-Moussawi, a spokesman for Baghdads military operations command, gave a lower count, saying 27 were killed and 50 wounded. AP

Illusion created as brain Antibiotic dosing

Washington: Ever wondered why stationary objects look as if moving after watching something in motion? Its because your brain adapts to motion in fraction of a second, scientists say. This visual illusion, which was first identified by Aristotle, has been recognised for a very long time. Now, a team at the University of Rochester found that even a very brief glimpse of motion for as little as 1/40 of a second can trigger this illusion called the Motion Aftereffect, LiveScience reported. It all comes back to a process called adaptation, the idea you change the sensitivity of your senses based on the environment you are in, and you do this constantly, Davis Glasser, who led the research, said. For example, when you put your clothes on in the morning, you only feel them against your skin for a short time, or when you walk into a room with a noisy air conditioner, you only hear it for a short time, he explained. It is theorised that adaptation allows us to ignore a constant stimulus so we can detect other Sydney: Doctors can now more confidently administer a drug that protects against bacterial superbugs, thanks to dosing guidelines for the antibiotic colistin. Colistin treats serious infections in critically ill patients, including those with kidney failure who are receiving dialysis. Developed by Monash University researchers, the guidelines will allow for more effective use of the drug and reduce the likelihood of bacteria developing resistance to it, the journal Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy reports. Prof Roger L Nation and associate professor Jian Li, from the Monash Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, played a key role in initiating the international research effort that led to the current study, according to a Monash statement. They said colistin was increasingly the last option available to treat seriously ill patients who have infections caused by an important class of antibiotic-re-

The show titled Lux in Arcana: The Vatican Secret Archives Revealed will run till September. The inherent richness of this exhibition is amplified by the fact that it is being organised outside the Vatican, on the Capitol Hill which symbolically represents the heart of Rome and its relationship with the papal city down the centuries, said Vatican secretary of state Cardinal Secretary Tarcisio Bertone. called in the past for more rigorous examination of the effect growing up with the internet can have on children, but not studies have yet provided conclusive evidence of any harmful side effects. Treatments for so-called internet addiction are now also offered around the world. Annika Small, Director of the Nominet Trust, said: The trust believes in the internet as a force for social good. Exaggerated fears about internet use can potentially deny its benefits to those most in need. I want to see a proper debate amongst policy makers, based on accurate research, about the effects of using interactive technologies on young peoples brains, behaviours and attitudes, without resorting to scaremongering that parents are being subjected to on regular basis. The study also suggested, however, that 61 per cent of parents distrust positive stories about the internet, believing them to be funded by interested parties. PTI

things, Glasser said. The motion aftereffect is a visual evidence that our brains have adapted to the motion we see. By looking at a stationary object, we can read out this adaptation, which appears as the illusory motion, the researchers said. Using tests in which participants responded to videos, Glasser and his colleagues found that after only a very brief exposure to an image in motion, the brain responds to stationary objects as if they are actually moving. They found a corresponding pattern of activity in tests of individual brain cells from a visual brain region important for perceiving motion.

The motion needed to elicit this response in the human participants was so brief that the human subjects could not consciously tell the direction in which it was going. However, it still affected their perception of a stationary image, said Glasser. The brevity of exposure to motion needed to stimulate these responses indicates this process is an automatic adaptation and can happen anytime one sees something moving, he added. Glasser said he is now exploring the long-standing theory that adaptation to a particular stimulus, such as motion in our visual field, improves our sensitivity to other stimuli. PTI

sistant bacteria, known as gramnegative superbugs. Unfortunately, colistin was developed more than 50 years ago when manufacturers were not required to provide accurate dosing guidelines. This has meant doctors are often shooting in the dark with respect to how much colistin should be administered to individual patients, Nation said. Insufficient dosage could leave patients vulnerable to infection and enable bacteria to become resistant, which could lead to more powerful superbugs in the future, he said. The research team based the dosing formula on a study of 105 critically ill patients who were administered the antibiotic. IANS

Chinas emission helped tame global warming! Sulphur pollution cause behind the steady temperature. Increase in coal consumption in China the reason. CO2 remains for a long time in air. Warming signs have begun again.

Global warming plateau linked to air pollution

Washington: Chinas rapid industrial growth helped ease the pace of global warming in the last decade, according to a new study. But greenhouse gases are heating things up again. While the decade of the 2000s was one of the hottest on record, the pace of warming had eased until 2009 and 2010, when temperatures lurched upward. The reason for the seeming plateau, according to the study, was the added sulphur polluting the atmosphere from the sharp increase in coal-burning industrial activity in China. Whats going on is, human activities do two things: They cool the planet and they warm the planet. People normally just focus on the warming effect of CO2 (carbon dioxide), but during the Chinese economic expansion there was a huge increase in sulphur emissions, which have a cooling effect, explained Robert K Kaufmann of Boston University, lead author of the new study published Yesterday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Science. Chinese coal consumption doubled between 2003 and 2007, and that caused a 26 per cent increase in global coal consumption, Kaufmann said. That was about the same as the worldwide increase in coal use in the previous 22 years, he said. So what took 22 years now took four years, and it started at a higher level. Now, China has recognised the impacts on its environment and on its citizens health and are installing equipment to scrub out the sulphur particles, Kaufmann said. Sulphur quickly drops out of the air if it is not replenished, while CO2 remains for a long time, so the warming from CO2 is beginning to be visible again, he noted. Indeed, NASA and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, have listed 2010 as tied for the warmest year on record, while the Hadley Center of the British Meteorological Office lists it as second warmest, after 1998. Some have even suggested that injecting sulphur compounds into the atmosphere might help ease global warming by increasing clouds and haze that would reflect sunlight, but an earlier study concluded that would be a bad idea. Injecting enough sulphur to reduce warming would wipe out the Arctic ozone layer and delay recovery of the Antarctic ozone hole by as much as 70 years, according to an analysis by Simone Tilmes of the National Center for Atmospheric

China landslide buries 18 alive

Beijing: At least 18 people were confirmed dead in a rain-triggered landslide in China, rescuers said today. The landslides occurred in Lueyang county in Shaanxi province, Xinhua reported. The local government has sent more than 400 people to the spot for rescue operations. Rescuers pulled out 20 people, 17 of whom were dead. One died after treatment failed, and two of the injured were being treated in hospital.

Research in Boulder, Colorado. While climate change is a major threat, more research is required before society attempts global geoengineering solutions, said Tilmes. Overall, global temperatures have been increasing for more than a century since the industrial revolu-

tion began adding gases like carbon dioxide to the air. But there have been similar plateaus, such as during the postWorld War II era when industrial production boosted sulphur emissions in several parts of the world, Kaufmann explained. AP

ctor Neil Nitin Mukesh, who has just finished shooting Abbas Mustans Players, says he has signed three films and all of them will release next year. There will be a lot of me next year. There are three films that I have signed, but I am not allowed to talk about them right now. All are very interesting subjects. You are going to see a lot more new avatars of me, Neil said. He was off the media glare for a long time as he was busy shooting for Players until now, said Neil. This year Players took a lot of my time. I was committed to Players and I do one film at a time, said Neil who was last seen in director Vishal Bhardwajs 7 Khoon Maaf. Players is the official remake of the Hollywood film The Italian Job where, apart from Neil, the cast includes Abhishek Bachchan, Bipasha Basu and Sonam Kapoor. Neil claims that, courtesy director duo Abbas Mustan, the film is shaping up quite close to its original version. Its an official remake of The Italian Job and with Abbas bhai Mastan bhai making it in Hindi you can guess how close it could be of the original film, said Neil. Players is set to hit theatres on December 23.

s an actor, producer and director, Aamir Khan hasnt gone wrong in past few years and the star says the writers and the directors of his movies should be applauded for the success. If you are saying Aamir you have so many successes, I am not a solo player. Its a team effort and in the team the two main people are not me - one is writer and the other is director, Aamir said. In the recent past, Aamir has produced unconventional films like Peepli Live, Dhobi Ghat and recently released Delhi Belly. All the films set the cash registers ringing. I dont have the magic touch. Yes, I have accepted those films and I have accepted the unusual films, so you can give me credit for that. I had the good sense to say yes to them, I had the good sense to work good in them and I was fortunate to have a good team in these films, he said. Often referred to as Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir said: There are many reasons for which the films have been successful. Every film of mine which has become successful has first originated in the mind of a writer with whom I have no connection, neither have I given the idea to him. Laagan came in Ashutoshs mind and when he came to me, his script was totally complete and I loved it. My contribution to the script is zero. Peepli Live, Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par all of these films are written by different writers, some of them are writer-director together. Now, had not these beautiful scripts not come to me, I would have not been able to be part of these films. The other creative talents who have contributed to the success of the film also share the equal credit for it.

fter Heroine, his most ambitious project, was put on the backburner indefinitely following the news of his lead actress Aishwarya Rais pregnancy, filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar says he went into depression and that hes upset that the truth was hidden from him. This decision of pulling the plug had a devasting effect on me It was like an avalanche collapsing on me I was in a state of total shock and depression, Bhandarkar posted on his blog. The filmmaker had remained silent so far, ever since producers UTV took the decision to stall the movie for the sake of Aishwaryas health. It was a collective decision of the producers of the film to pull off the plug on the current assembled projectI am still reeling in a state of shock. But still chose to remain silent all these days; but was coerced into breaking my silence as I realised that the truth deserved to be told, he added. Though Bhandarkar believes motherhood is pious and that women play an important role in his personal and professional life, he feels things could have been altered if he would have been informed even after the films announcement May 13 at the 64th Cannes International Film Festival. The entire event would not have taken place if on the onset the actress would have informed the state of her health an impending maternity. The truth was hidden from us. We learnt about the entire thing from news channels like the rest of the world that the said actress was four months pregnant and she was due on November. Filmmaking in Mumbai film industry is not a mere business but one big fraternity who functions on total faith and trust. The film was announced in Cannes on 13th May while we commenced shooting on 7th June. There was a gap of 24 days...even if we had known the truth behind the maternal state of the actress, things could have been reworked keeping the state of matters in mind accordingly and this crisis could have been averted, wrote Bhandarkar.

ollywood choreographer Terence Lewis dance company has been invited to perform at the opening ceremony of the Impulstanz Dance Festival in Vienna. He says it is a privilege to showcase the Hindi film industry on an international platform. Impulstanz Dance Festival, one of the largest dance festivals in the world, has been held every July for the 28 years. Choreographers and teachers from across the world teach and perform various dance forms. Members of the Terence Lewis Contemporary Dance Company will leave on July 9 for Vienna and their show is scheduled for July 14. The TLCDC will stage its production Jhoom on July 14. It is a 30 minute extravaganza, bringing to the stage the very essence of India, wrapped in the colours and sounds of Bollywood. Jhoom is the perfect ground where Indian culture and tradition meet the new age glitz and gloss of mainstream Bollywood, Lewis, the artistic director of TLCDC, said. It is an absolute privilege to showcase Bollywood on an international platform. The production is an interesting colourful potpourri of folk, the classical form and the current day kitsch. Jhoom is an ode to this Bollywood fantasy, added the 36-year-old, who choreographed for films like Shikhar and Naach.
