PRAY FOR J.A.M. MEM BERS MEMBERS

Members of our Middle School Youth Group, J.A.M., together with chaperones, will be participating in a Catholic HEART Workcamp in Charlotte North Carolina from July 3rd thru 9th. There they will share the love of Jesus and serve the neglected, brokenhearted and marginalized in any way needed. The mission of the Catholic HEART Workcamp is to revitalize communities and beautify homes for the elderly, disabled and those who cannot afford needed repairs. Our goal is to inspire participants to serve in their local communities. May they have a safe and grow-filled experience. (from Catholic HEART Workcamp Mission Statement)

SAINTS FOR THE WEEK

Monday: Tuesday: Saturday: Elizabeth of Portugal Independence Day, USA Anthony Mary Zaccaria, priest,

Wednesday: Maria Gorreti, virgin, martyr Augustine Zhao Rong, priest, martyr, and his companions, martyrs. The 120 martyrs in this group died between 1648 and 1930. Most of them (87) were born in China and were children, parents, catechists or laborers, ranging from nine years of age to 72. This group includes four Chinese diocesan priests. The 33 foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious, especially from the Order of Preachers, the Paris Foreign Mission Society, the Friars Minor, Jesuits, Salesians and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese solider who accompanied Bishop John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse (Paris Foreign Mission Society) to his martyrdom in Beijing. Augustine was baptized and not long after was ordained as a diocesan priest. He was martyred in 1815. Beatified in groups at various times, these 120 martyrs were canonized in Rome on October 1, 2000.

FROM OUR PASTOR

I hope you enjoy a very happy Independence Day weekend, which is also the third anniversary of my first Sunday at Saint Charles in 2008. I remarked then on the irony of the Bishop sending an Englishman among a congregation of Americans who were at that very moment celebrating freeing themselves from colonial repression! As a Catholic, however, I cannot regret the American Revolution. I recently read an article by Dr. Marian Horvat which pointed out that although Catholicism was a natural part of French settlement in the Ohio and Mississippi valleys and Spanish colonization in California, the South West and Florida, Catholics were routinely persecuted in the original thirteen colonies, reflecting the way they were treated in Britain. She writes: As we see in the first general report on the state of Catholicism by John Carroll in 1785, Catholics were a mere handful. He conservatively estimated the Catholic population in those colonies to be 25,000. Of this figure, 15,800 resided in Maryland, about 7,000 in Pennsylvania, and another 1,500 in New York. Considering that the population in the first federal census of 1790 totaled 3,939,000, the Catholic presence was less than one percent, certainly not a significant force in the original 13 British colonies. In the early 17th century, when priests were banned from England, America was no more tolerant. The Puritan government in Massachusetts enacted an anti -priest law in May of 1647, which threatened with death all and every Jesuit, seminary priest, missionary or other spiritual or ecclesiastical person made or ordained by any authority, power or jurisdiction, derived, challenged or pretended, from the Pope or See of Rome. When Georgia, the thirteenth colony, was brought into being in 1732 by a charter granted by King George II, its guarantee of religious freedom followed the fixed pattern: full religious freedom was promised to all future settlers of the colony except papists, that is Catholics. The notable exception was Maryland where in 1632 King Charles I had issued a generous charter to a prominent Catholic convert from Anglicanism, Lord Cecil Calvert, for an American colony where Catholics could worship freely. However, even here gradual Protestant pressure changed things so that in 1692 the Maryland Assembly established the Church of England as the official State religion supported by tax levies, while Catholic priests could now be prosecuted for saying Mass. Although Catholics generally maintained their social status, they were denied the right to vote or otherwise participate in the government of the colony their ancestors had founded. The Revolution generally put an end to such anti-Catholic laws and in 1790 John Carroll was consecrated as the first Catholic Bishop for America. We know that prejudice against Catholics continued, but by Carrolls death in 1815 the number of Catholics had quadrupled. Now there are over 69 million Catholics in America, 22% of the population, and as a Catholic priest free to live and celebrate the sacraments in the United Sates I can join you in saying Long live the Revolution!
