We welcome our new Associate Pastor, Cheryl Jones

Greetings in the Name of Our Risen Lord married for 25 years. We dont have any children but there are plenty of them in our life. He is originally from Tulsa, OK and I am from Kansas City, MO. My educational background includes a Bachelors degree from Lincoln University and a Masters degree from Ohio State; both in Speech Pathology. In May, 2011, I completed my Maser of Divinity degree from Perkins School of Theology/SMU. I am a Provisional Elder on track for ordination in 2013 in the North Texas Conference. Some other little things about me: I love to read. I recently completed Walking the Labyrinth as a Spiritual Direction. I am currently reading, Singing the Lords Song in a Strange Land by Rev. Joseph Lowery. I love reading anything that Rev. Max Lucado writes and mysteries such as the ones by Agatha Christie and Mary Higgins Clark. I like to bowl and I play a little tennis. However, I prefer watching professional sports. Football is my favorite (esp. Kansas City Chiefs), basketball at playoff time, track and field and tennis. I love playing games and I am known for stomping visitors

and Savior Jesus Christ, It is with great joy that I come to you today. This month is the beginning of our annual conference year and the beginning of my time in service and fellowship with you. I am excited to be coming on board as your new Associate Pastor and in becoming acquainted with each of you. Earlier this month my husband, Odis, was co-chair of a family reunion gathering for his mothers side of the family. What a great time we had. Most of us knew one another, many of us hadnt seen one another in some time. There was a small contingency of family members who we had to become acquainted with. These were persons who were unknown prior to this time or newly married into the family, yet we are all family. That is how I see each of you. We have not yet met but I see all of us as members in the family of God. Now we just need to become acquainted. My husband, Odis, and I have been (Associate Pastor continued on page 2)

Mike Walker honored as our Father of the Year for 2011

Just nine days before Pearl Harbor was attacked, our 2011 Father of the Year was born at home in East Texas. Sports were big in his family. In fact, after he was born, that very night his daddy attended a local basketball game, which his mother did not appreciate. This boy played a lot of Pony League baseball as a child, mostly as catcher, and went on to play basketball for his high school team, winning the State Championship in 1958. Growing up, this middle child of three sons resented having to pick cotton each Labor Day but wanted the money so he could buy Levi jeans for the new school year. After all, he had standards. These standards led him to be valedictorian of his graduating class. His family was very active in their small town Methodist Church. In his youth, he accepted Christ in his pastors office. He became involved in Bible Memory Association where he memorized over 2,000 verses. He even preached a sermon at age 16. While playing in a basketball game one night, this young man caught the eye of a cheerleader from a nearby town

who thought he was the spitting image of teen heartthrob, Ricky Nelson. He could sing too! She was the only girl he ever dated before marrying her at age 19. Two years later they started their family. His wife says, From the very first moment they placed our first-born in his arms, I saw a totally different side of my husband than I had ever seen before, and I grew to love that side of him through the years more and more. He is never happier than when he is with our children and grandchildren sharing a meal, taking them to and from school, going on a trip, watching a game or performance, or discussing some family or world issue with them. And his grandchildren and children sense his joy. His youngest grandson says, He takes an interest in what we do. He has come to every baseball game of mine and my brothers that I can remember unless he was out of town. His granddaughter remarks, Grandfather is very generous, smart and he can fix almost anything. He loves to spend time with his grandchildren and does so much for his family. His oldest grandson says, When I

think about it, there is nothing you can hold against him. He is never wrong in what he tells us. I know he loves us and I love him, too. His daughter declares, My father is the wisest person I know and my most trusted adviser. I can talk to him about anything and know that I will receive fair-minded, thoughtful, and creative counsel. He is also the most humble man of integrity. His unquestioning faith in his Heavenly Fathers grace and will sustains his entire family. Both of his children agree that their dads life speaks this message: Because of Christ, people are all that matter. This is evident by how he spends his resources and time apart from his vocation which has also been all about people. His kids say, When we were growing up, ours was the only home we knew where making a lot of expensive long distance phone calls was not only permitted, but encouraged. It was the best way to stay connected to friends and family. To this day, he keeps up with friends going as far back as high school and calls missionary friends around the world. He has trained us by teaching and example to value and invest in others with our time and resources. His willingness to take a stand against the norm and assume major roles in founding alternative ministries like Good News, Impact Camp and the Mission Society for United Methodists has been a great model, too. Family time and one-on-one time with Dad remained a priority over decades of pastoral ministry; so did letting his family participate in Kingdom work as well. His son says, Dad has always been intentional about being actively connected to Gods larger work in the world. My sister and I knew this
www.tsumc.org

because we were allowed to be a part of it. When living in Greenville, it was exciting to ride with Dad to the hospitals there or in Dallas to visit a sick church member, even though I was too young to go up to the room myself. Often times missionaries or visiting Christian speakers were at our dinner table for Sunday lunch. And one of my earliest paying jobs was to peel and stick address labels onto thousands of copies of the newsletter that Dad published for seminary students. All of these let us into his world and reminded us of what was important to him. His daughter-in-law says, He is always available for us. From helping with carpool to picking up prescriptions, I can count on him to help me. I also rely on his insight to problems. He offers a unique perspective and helps me to see things in different ways. Hes a lot of fun too. Family game nights are a blast and its his comments or goof ups that cause us to laugh a lot. I consider it a personal triumph if I can get him to laugh out loud. Not only can his wife, kids, and grandkids count on his deliberate availability and attention, if a friend is in crisis far away, he is on the next plane. Even in retirement, he has accompanied elderly missionary friends on a pilgrimage of Pauls missionary journeys just so his friends could make the trip when he had already traveled there before. He continually looks for ways to honor others at significant milestones in their lives. Many a birthday or retirement celebration has been initiated for friends and colleagues by him complete with songs, games and tributes that hes developed just for each occasion. It is time to honor him for a change-Mike Walker, 2011 Father of the Year.

In the Swing of Things!

When the children of the TSUMC Sunday School learned of a need for toddler swings for missionaries in the Solomon Islands, they quickly responded to the need and raised money to purchase 2 new swings.

Faith Promise Update:

The Global Impact Committee would like to thank those who have turned in their pledges for the year. Giving to date is a bit short to meet the commitments we have made to our missionaries for the year. In addition to the regular financial support that we distribute to missionaries, we also have opportunities to participate in special needs as they rise. Your giving to Global Impact is making a difference to people around the world who need to hear of Christs love.

We would like to invite you to be part of this 2011 Fall Concert as a singer. If you ever wanted to learn how to sing, this is a great opportunity to do so. Choir is not there to measure your singing ability, rather to support and encourage each other to sing loud for God. We need every part and even if you were never a singer but are interested in joining the choir because you want to praise God, that is all thats needed to join the choir -- a heart to sing Gods praise. Please contact Keum Hwang for any questions at keumhwang@tsumc.org.
