Bob Garratt is a company director, consultant and academic. He is chairman of Media Projects International in London and of Organization Development Limited in Hong Kong. He consults in director development and the development of strategic thinking in Europe,Asia,Australia,New Zealand and the USA.He is visiting fellow at the Management School of Imperial College,LondonUniversity,an associate of Judge Institute of Management, Cambridge University and immediate past chairman of the Association for Management Education and Development.

This book is a complete guide to the directors/managers working in corporate sector and would be managers like us. According to the author, Learning is central to the survival and growth of all organizations. Importance of learning is emphasized throughout the book.. This book gives a birds eye view of how learning at predefined pace makes an impact on the growth of the individual and in turn the growth of the organization. The author has elucidated the entire journey of learning in the form of five chapters.

Learning is very important aspect of directors development. It is our shortsightedness and complacency, which prevents us from a process of continuous learning. There is no shortcut or any readymade solution for learning; rather it is a continuous and gradual process. However, if we search for right questions then we will have right answers automatically. This is the great way of learning. Who is responsible for directors development? Shareholders, Non-Executive Directors, Chairman, Chief executives or Executive Director? The answer for this question is none of these. Those directors themselves are responsible for their development. There are five keys for directors development, thinking and reflecting, designing the future, seeing the organization as a whole, managing in times of turbulence and uncertainty, willingness to learn from others.

DEVELOPING OUR PEOPLE


According to most directors, people are our asset. This is the very human resource that generates, develops and utilizes all technology. So why should we not develop this human resource in a better way?

For developing people motivation, is a great tool. Rewarding and appraising the employees for their good performance is a better tool rather than penalizing them for underperforming. The ultimate goal of people development is enhancing the quality of the staff. Learning is again best tool available with us. Motivate and lead the people to learn should be the primary objective of all directors.

DEVELOPING OUR ORGANIZATIONS


Learning is central to survival and development of all the organizations. This is the fundamental law of ecology that L C.In other words rate of learning should be greater than or equal to rate of change of our environment. This law signifies the role of learning for all the organizations. For developing our organizations, we should have a clear and authentic picture of present situation. Development of a common vision is also required. Directors also require to bridge between present and vision of the organization.

CREATING A LEARNING CLIMATE IN OUR ORGANIZATIONS


Learning organization is an organization, which facilitates the learning of all its members and continuously transforms itself.Hence; creation of learning climate is of great significance for all organizations.

A learning organization is ready to cope up with the changing environment. Role of directors becomes crucial here, because there modus operandi and leadership skills make all the differences.

A BRIEF GLIMPSE OF THE FUTURE.


Rate of environmental change is increasing day by day. Therefore, there would be more challenging situation for corporate directors and managers. Their role will keep changing in accordance to the changing environment. The organizations with higher rate of learning will survive and grow and others would be casted away by changing environment.

CONCLUSION
Learning is the key to survival and growth of all the organizations. Role of directors in an organizations development is also very crucial. How they learn to develop themselves and their people will decide the growth of their respective organizations. Organizations need to keep changing themselves with the environment. Organizations need supervise and overhaul their system, process and culture, in order to survive and grow.
