2 Type tests
2.1 Definition
Tests made before supplying, on a general commercial basis, a type of accessory covered by this
standard, in order to demonstrate satisfactory performance characteristics to meet the intended
application. These tests are of such a nature that, once successfully completed, they need not be
repeated, unless changes are made in the materials or design or manufacturing process which might
change the performance characteristics.
Cores shall be conditioned beforehand. The purpose of this treatment is to ensure the dimensional
stabilization of the insulating sheath. It consists of keeping the core sections in an enclosure at
(120 ± 2)°C for 1 h approximately and letting them cool down to ambient temperature by opening the
enclosure door.
2.2.3 Spare
For each of the specified tests, the number of samples and the test sequences are given in annex A.
Unless otherwise specified, tests shall be carried out at an ambient temperature between 15°C and
35°C in a room whose relative humidity ranges between 25 % and 75 %, in accordance with sub-
clause 5.3 of EN 60068-1.
The frequency of the a.c. test voltages shall be in the range 49 Hz to 61 Hz. The waveform shall be
substantially sinusoidal. The values quoted are r.m.s. values.
If a cable fails beyond any part of anchoring devices, the test result shall be declared void without
discrediting the anchoring device. Tests are repeated using a new anchoring device and a new cable.
An anchoring device for overhead services shall be installed at each end of an approximately 0,5 m
long overhead bundle with a cross-section of 2 x 16 mm². The system shall allow free rotation of the
anchoring devices. A stress of 1 500 N shall be applied to the tested device for 10 min.
An anchoring device for underground to overhead services shall be installed at both ends of an
approximately 0,5 m long underground cable with a cross-section of 3 x 16 mm² + 16 mm². The
system shall allow free rotation of the anchoring devices. A stress of 500 N shall be applied to the
tested device for 10 min.
2.2.9 Requirements
The number of samples to be tested is specified for each test. The device is type test approved if the
test results are satisfactory for all samples. If not, the device is declared non conforming and
consequently not approved. A retest is allowed only if the failure of a sample results from a wrong
installation or a cable failure as indicated in sub-clause 2.2.7
- the strength increase shall be carried out smoothly with the tensile machine ;
- the rate of the strength increase shall be between 500 N/min and 1 000 N/min.
2.3.1 Procedure
2.3.1.1 Tests on clamps PA 25, PAR 25, PAC 25, PACR 25 and PAD 25
An anchoring device shall be installed at 50 cm from the end of a 2 m long minimum overhead
bundle with a 2 x 16 mm² cross-section. It shall be fitted the same way as it is done on the support ;
the same test shall be carried out on a 4 x 25 mm² overhead bundle.
An increasing strength Tn is applied to the assembly up to 1 500 N, within ± 5 %. The strength shall be
maintained at this value for 10 min then gradually increased to the nominal value T r = 2 000 N for PA,
PAR, PAC, PACR and PAD clamps and then released.
For PAR, PACR and PAD clamps and depending on the mode of adjustment, the test may be carried
out in different positions.
An anchoring device shall be installed at 50 cm from the end of a 2 m long minimum underground
cable with a 3 x 16 mm² + 1 x 16 mm² cross-section. It shall be fitted the same way as it is done on
the support.
An increasing strength is applied to the assembly up to T n = 500 N, within ± 5 %. The strength shall be
maintained at this value for 10 min then gradually increased to the nominal value, i.e. T r = 700 N.
2.3.2 Requirements
After the strength has been applied at value T n for 1 min, no permanent slippage nor breakdown of
any part of the clamp shall be observed.
The voltage generator shall trip for a leakage current of (10,0 ± 0,5) mA.
2.4.1 Procedure
2.4.1.1 Test on PA 25, PAR 25, PAC 25, PACR 25 and PAD 25 clamps
The test is carried out with conductive rods whose protruding ends are insulated and that are fitted
into every places for the cores of the bundle. The length of the rods is such that they protrude by 2 cm
at each end of the tightening pieces of the clamp.
The diameter of the rods"d" is determined by the average position of the different parts of the clamp,
while a 600 N strength is applied to the bundle of the minimum cross-section and then to the bundle
of the maximum cross-section.
The conductive part of the anchoring clamp, or if no conductive part, its fixation, is earthed. An a.c.
voltage of 6 kV is applied between the connected together rods and the conductive part of the clamp,
at a rate of approximately 1 kV/s.
The test is carried out with a conductive rod fitted in the anchoring clamp. Its length is such that it
protrudes by 2 cm at both ends of the tightening pieces.
Its diameter "d" is determined by the average position of the different parts of the clamp, while a 300
N strength is applied to the underground insulated cable of the minimum cross-section and then to the
underground insulated cable of the maximum cross-section.
NF C 33-042 –1998 - 10 -
The conductive part of the clamp, or if no conductive part, its fixation, is earthed. An a.c. voltage of
6 kV is applied between the rod and the conductive part of the clamp, at a rate of approximately 1
kV/s.
2.4.2 Requirement
2.5.1 Principle
In order to avoid any breakdown while operating under cold weather conditions, the device is
submitted to a dynamic test at low temperature.
(a) one PA 25 or PAR 25 or PAC 25 or PACR 25 or PAD 25 anchoring clamp fitted on a length of
service bundle of 2 x 16 mm² cross-section.
(b) one PAS 35 anchoring clamp.fitted on a length of insulated underground service cable of 3 x 16
mm² + 1 x 16 mm² cross-section.
In both cases, the cable length is 2 m and the anchoring clamp is fitted at ambient temperature at
50 cm from one end.
2.5.3 Procedure
The clamp is fixed to a device similar to the one used on normal installation. At the opposite insulated
end of the bundle or of the cable, an appropriate tensile machine is fitted. The clamp is included in a
1
traction bench having an enclosure kept at (-10 )°C.
3
For type (a) assembly, the clamp is submitted to a gradually applied 700 N strength. This strength is
maintained at this value for 1 min. It is then increased within 2 s up to 1 000 N, then released.
For type (b) assembly, the clamp is submitted to a gradually applied 250 N strength. This strength is
maintained at this value for 1 min. It is then increased within 2 s up to 350 N, then released.
2.5.4 Requirements
Neither breakdown of any part of the clamp nor permanent slippage of the cores or of the cable shall
occur.
2.6.1 Procedure
The samples fitted according to 2.2.8 are submitted to the climatic test according to
HD 626-2, sub-clause 2.5.1, with the following details :
- 6 weekly cycles are required at the enclosure temperature of (70 ± 2)°C for phases A and C ;
- the sample longitudinal opening faces the light source.
2.6.2 Spare
2.6.3 Requirement
At the end of the climatic ageing cycles and after a recovery period of at least 24 h but not exceeding
72 h at the laboratory atmosphere, the assemblies shall be submitted successively to the tests of sub-
clauses 2.6.3.1 and 2.6.3.2.
Anchoring clamps for overhead services are fitted to metallic anchoring point.
At the beginning of these tests, the assemblies may be re-installed, if sliding or moving have occurred
during the climatic ageing test, till the values indicated in 2.2.8.
The voltage generator shall trip for a leakage current of (10,0 ± 0,5)mA.
The end of the bundle or of the cable on which the anchoring clamp is fitted is capped in order to
avoid any flashover and the conductive part of the clamp, if any, or the metallic anchoring point is
earthed.
An increasing a.c. voltage is applied up to 10 kV between the earth and the conductors of the bundle
or of the cable. The increase of voltage is applied at a rate of approximately 1 kV/s. This voltage is
maintained for 30 min.
It is reminded that at the beginning of this test, the assemblies may be re-installed, if sliding or
moving has occurred during the climatic ageing test, till the values indicated in 2.2.8.
At the end of the voltage test, the mechanical strength test defined in 2.3 allowing the clamp rotation
is applied to the tested device.
No continuous slippage of the service cores or of the cable in the clamp, nor clamp breakdown, shall
occur before :
- 1 600 N for PA 25, PAR 25, PAC 25, PACR 25 and PAD 25 clamps
- 600 N for PAS 35 clamps.
The marking allowing identification of the samples shall be legible when examined with normal or
corrected vision, without magnification.
2.7.1 Procedure
The tested device, fitted according to 2.2.8, is installed horizontally; the longitudinal opening of the
anchoring clamp is placed downwards . This assembly is submitted to the corrosion test according to
experimental C 33-003 standard.
2.7.2 Requirement
At the end of the corrosion cycles and after a recovery period of at least 24 h but not exceeding 72 h
at the laboratory atmosphere, the assembly shall be rinsed with demineralized water and then
submitted to the tests defined in sub-clauses 2.6.3 and 2.6.4.
When the anchoring devices have covered or uncovered steel parts, no trace of rust shall be
observed.
2.8 Spare
This test applies only to PA 25 or PAR 25 or PAC 25 or PACR 25 or PAD 25 clamp for aerial insulated
service bundles.
2.9.1 Principle
The test consists of imposing a strength on the anchoring clamp and on the cores. A heat cycle,
obtained by an intermittent a.c. current flowing in the conductors, is combined with the mechanical
stresses. The mechanical overload is always applied in cold period.
2.9.2 Procedure
An anchoring device is fitted at both ends of a service bundle the cross-section of which is 2 x 16
mm². The distance between clamps is at least 5 m and there is at least 1 m coming outside of each
anchoring clamp.
The duration of the basic cycle is 90 min and it consists of applying mechanical and thermal stresses.
Marks are done on the cores at the beginning of the first cycle in order to measure their slippage, if
any, with respect to the tightening devices (clavets, linings, wedges, etc...).
The conductors are raised up to 25°C by a flowing current, and maintained at (25 ± 3)°C.
The mechanical load is then increased up to 1 500 N, within ± 2 % in about 1 min. It is then
maintained at this value for 10 min using a manual or automatic continuous control. At the end of the
tenth minute, the slippages g 0 and g'0 of the two cores with respect to the parts ensuring their position
at both ends are recorded. The assembly is allowed to stabilize mechanically for 24 h while
maintaining temperature control at (25 ± 3)°C on the conductors. The temperature is measured
underneath the insulation. Throughout this period, values of the residual stress versus time are
recorded.
The duration of the heating period is 45 min.The temperature rise is achieved by an a.c. flowing
current. The increase temperature speed is chosen to maintain the stabilized state at (70 ± 3)°C for
the last 30 minutes of the heating period.
For the second period, the conductor is left naturally cooled down to (25 ± 3)°C, and the temperature
is then maintained at this value until the end of the cycle.
The mechanical stress is increased up to 800 N at the end of the first cycle in case it would be lower
than this value.
At the end of the test, the slippages g 500 and g'500 of the two cores sheaths with respect to the part
ensuring their position at both ends are recorded.
2.9.3 Requirements
The slippages of the cores with respect to the tightening parts shall comply with the following
conditions :
- g0 + g'0 10 mm
- g500 + g'500 10 mm
The service cores are immersed in water with their anchoring clamp.
It is permitted to cut the cores at both sides of the clamps before immersion.
The resistivity of the water shall be less than 200 .m and its temperature is recorded for information.
The voltage generator shall trip for a leakage current of (10,0 ± 0,5) mA.
After 30 min under the water, the voltage test is applied to the sample with a 10 kV a.c. voltage for
1 min. The a.c. voltage is applied at a rate of approximately 1 kV/s.
