Community Bulletin–August 2008

A MESSAGE FROM SUPT. TOM MCILHONE,

UNIT COMMANDER OF 22 DIVISION.
Well, it appears the summer is behind us now and we are
experiencing the cooler weather and the return to our very
hectic schedules. I hope you all had a great summer and
managed to get away from your work and routines long enough
for a nice break and some relaxation.
We have been extremely busy over the summer and have a
couple of changes I wish to inform you of. As most of you are aware, we have a
substation located at 2986 Lakeshore Blvd. W. In efforts to maximize the
efficiency of the unit and to increase the number of officers available to respond
to your calls for service, the substation will only operate Monday to Friday with
the hours of 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and on weekends from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00
p.m.
Commencing Monday September 15, in efforts to increase the sense of safety and
security as well as improve the communication and relationships we have with
the local youth, we will have three of our officers assigned to local high schools.
The officers will be assigned to Silverthorn Collegiate, Etobicoke Collegiate and
Michael Power High School. This is an exciting and unique experience in Toronto
and we fully expect this will add to the positive experience we hope our youth
enjoy in their high school years.
Tom McIlhone

Traffic Initiatives
In August we conducted a three week traffic initiative in the hope of reducing the number
of accidents on and around Dundas Street West, Islington Avenue and The Queensway.
Close to a thousand offence notices were handed out by the officers at 22 Division. A
large portion of these were for speeding and intersection-related offences.
On a positive note, my officers advised me that by the end of the campaign the amount
of motorists speeding on these roadways had dropped.
Over the next several months we will see how this may have affected the accident
pattern within 22 Division.
We have started the Back to School campaign for the first two weeks of the school year.
I am hoping that everyone drives carefully and a reminder that there will be no tolerance
for speeders. One of our officers stopped a school teacher on her way to teach students
doing 71 km/h in the 40 km/h zone. The officer taught her that speeding 31km/h over
the limit earns you 4 points and a $226.00 fine.
Until next time drive/walk safely.
