Magpies put up a fight against Sand Goannas

Friday night football returned to Blackall last week with the Blackall Magpies taking on the Barcaldine Sand Goannas. The evening kicked off by two curtain raiser games between the St Josephs and Blackall State School junior and senior teams. The junior game saw good participation levels from both schools with Mitchell Parry, Slater Spinks, Riley Hinds and Sam Pearson as standout players throughout the game. In the senior game Blackall State School was too good for St Josephs Stand out players on the Blackall State School team were Billy Flynn, Logan Hauff, Mitchell Hauff and Jesse Long, with Sam Fletcher and Will Parry the strongest players on the St Josephs side. In the main game, the Barcaldine Sand Goannas got off to a strong start, scoring their first try quickly. The Blackall Magpies struggled throughout the game, but scored and converted a try in the final minutes for an end score of 28-6 to the Barcaldine Sand Goannas.

Tambo triumphs in home polocrosse carnival

Tambo Polocrosse Club fielded three teams for their home carnival and in a mighty effort kept at home the trophies for the A, B and C Grades. The carnival was well attended with 17 teams from as far afield as Goondiwindi, Taroom and Chinchilla travelling to compete. The event was sponsored by Robyn Sargood, Three Rivers Helicopters, Darren Batts Livestock Transport, Topex Longreach, J. Turner Transport, Allied Beef, D and L Tindall, Landmark Tambo, Four Square Tambo and Caltex Tambo. Aimee McGuire, Scott Sargood, Mitch Sargood, Tom McLeish, Jacob Ross and Peter Elmes of Tambo 1 took out the A Grade, triumphing over Taroom 1. Jordan Street, Sarah Steer, Darren Batts, Bella Elmes, Doug Tindall & Lauren Tindall made up Tambo 2, winners of the B Grade over Charleville 1. Matt Sargood, Belinda McLeish, Chris Hall, Zane McDonald & Keith Logan of Tambo 3 also triumphed, taking out the C Grade.

CQ NRL bid brings skills to schools

Blackall students had the chance to learn some rugby leagues skills and drills with visits from the CQ NRL Bid Schools Program to both Blackall State School and St Josephs on Tuesday. The CQ NRL Bid aims to establish a professional rugby league club in the central Queensland region and has been taking the message on the road, with Walson Carlos conducting clinics at schools in Blackall, Barcaldine, Longreach and Winton this week. Mr Carlos said the Blackall students had been enthusiastic and many were supportive of the CQ NRL bid. The kids have been great and its really exciting to see how many of them already knew about the bid, Mr Carlos said. The organisation is taking other steps to mentor young players, developing scholarships to allow young players from the central region to attend school in Rockhampton. Between five to ten scholarships will be offered each year by the bids major

Mr Carlos said the CQ NRL Bid is currently working hard to secure their NRL licence and to gather more community support. At the moment were working on our business plan, which will be submitted to the NRL in August, Mr Carlos said. If the bid is successful there is predicted to be a $100 million boost to the central Queensland economy, as well as the construction of a stadium in Rockhampton and the creation of 300 full time jobs.

New local livestock agent Barron Agencies is continuing to campaign to be allowed selling space at the Blackall saleyards. The business has asked the Blackall Tambo Regional Council to allow them to operate in conjunction with the Thursday cattle sale, or to run their own sale on a Tuesday.

The general meeting of council on June 8 certainly was a busy day with many items for consideration as well as deputations by LG Assets and Barron Agencies. The recent bulk items waste collection was most successful with around 55 households participating in this combined environmental campaign in the region. Twenty car bodies were collected along with white goods and furniture as well as a lot of garden waste. Council will locate their Blackall Tambo Regional Council notice board at the Shamrock Street end of Short Street Blackall. The Tambo notice board will be located between Home Service Centre and Multi Purpose Centre. This area is known as the courtyard and funding of $70,750 through the Department of Families Housing Community Services and Indigenous Affairs, Accessible Communities Program has been received to develop this area further. Congratulations to our staff, 377 applications were received and only 76 were successful. Council adopted a recommendation from the Blackall Common Advisory Committee to increase the total number of adult stock on the Blackall Common from 115 to 200 for a period of 6 months, when numbers will be reviewed. Council will collaborate with the South West NRM finance workshops to assist rural landowners in the Blackall Tambo Region to develop individual pest management plans for their respective properties. Council will, in conjunction with the Blackall State School, further investigate suitable council owned premises for the establishment of a gymnasium utilising equipment currently owned by the school. Council will also invite expressions of interest from suitably qualified local persons to operate a gymnasium facility in Blackall. Council will also invite registrations of interest from the public to use a gymnasium facility in Blackall. The registrations will be used by council to determine whether or not to proceed with the proposal for a gym. Council also agreed to appoint the Blackall Tambo Regional Council Friends of Ram Park Advisory Committee to advise council in accordance with the terms of reference. The committee will assist with Ram Park becoming a key regional tourist destination. Council has agreed to sponsor a shield for an annual gymkhana between all the pony clubs active in our region. The first event is planned to happen at Tambo later in the year. A deputation was made by Barron Agencies, who have recently opened their business in Blackall, making a further request to operate at the Blackall saleyards on a Tuesday. Councillor Peter Skewes declared an interest and left the meeting. The remaining councillors determined to seek the advice of the Blackall Saleyards Advisory Committee before making a decision on this issue. A representative of Barron Agencies will attend this meeting, as with all agents in Blackall.

Ian Francis horsemanship clinic Trebles final teams

Blackall hosted master horseman Ian Francis on the weekend to conduct a horsemanship and cattle working clinic. Fifteen enthusiastic riders braved the weather keen learn as much as they could from the man known as Mr Versatile. Ian Francis is a legend amongst Australian horsemen and is often described as the best horseman in the world, having trained more horses in more events than any other horseman in Australia. Some of his achievements have been being named the NCHA (cutting) futurity champion three times and res champion three times, the NRHA (reining) futurity champion five times and the Cloncurry Stockmans challenge champion twice. He has also sold sale horses for clients in excess of a million dollars. On Saturday morning, students learnt the importance of flexion, hip control, maintaining shape and speed control with their horses. They then moved onto cattle work, getting themselves in the correct position and teaching their horses how to rate a cow outside. Ian explained to the group that a lot of people dont bother with some of these things, but they have all been important factors that have got him to the pay window over the years. The weekend was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended, with significant improvement made by horses and riders by Sunday afternoon, with attendees keen for another clinic next year.

In a very good game of trebles last Sunday between Gary Whitfield, Col Pfingst and Mitch Pfingst against Wayne Richardson, John Bowyer and Ross Browning, the lead changed a couple of times. After a bad start Mitch was down 12-3 on 7 ends and the team looked to be in big trouble, but they clawed their way back to be 18 all on 17 ends, then picking up five shots to win 23-29 to put them in the final. In social bowls Woody, Julie and visitor Peter had an easy win against Lauretta, Judy and Roland 26-10. Unfortunately Barcaldine trebles were called off due to wet conditions, with a new date to be announced. The trebles final, handicap singles and pairs will be played at the Blackall Bowls Club this Sunday from 9:30 am with social play available In the trebles final, G Whitfield, CPfingst and M Pfingst to play T Hayward, L Kelly and J Carter. Junior Magpies to compete in Laurie Spina Shield

Members of the Blackall Magpies junior rugby league teams will be put to the test this Friday and Saturday as they compete in the Laurie Spina Shield in Townsville. The annual two-day rugby league carnival, open to players under 11 years of age, will see 58 teams from across northern and western Queensland compete. The Blackall team competing is made up of

Bob bows out after 43 years on the job

Bob McIlroy, who spent 12 years as the officer in charge at the Blackall Ambulance Station in the 1980s, has just retired from the service after 43 years on the job. At his retirement dinner in April he was presented with the QASs recently created Meritorious Service Medal. Beginning at the age of 20, Bob was based at Bundaberg for seven years before moving to Moura for another seven years, followed by 12 at Blackall, and then his final move to Tully in far north Queensland. At his dinner Bob recalled the horror of the mining disasters at Moura and having to attend far too many road accidents. He also recalled the good times of helping bush communities such as Blackall, and delivering babies 13 of them. One achievement that Bob was very proud of was to help extend the Central Queensland Aerial Service further west to include places like Blackall. When I went out there the service only went as far as Emerald, he said. I was told if the appropriate money could be raised, the service would be extended. We held a race meeting and raised twice as much as we needed. The service was then kept going by raffles and other fund raisers. Communications was another problem for Bob at the time, in the 1980s. The best way to keep in radio contact was to tune the ambulance radio to the ABC Radio station at Longreach. When I was on the road my wife, Gloria, would ring the ABC and they would put a message on air. You had to think ahead about where a job might take you, which meant leaving fuel on roadsides so you could refuel on long trips. I also had stock and station agents who would fly me to accidents. Delivering babies was a happy topic for Bob. One bush birth ended with the baby being carried to hospital at Taroom in a XXXX carton. I delivered another one in a boat in the flooded Dawson River, and another at the dingo fence on the Barcoo River between Tambo and Blackall. Father Noel Milner planted a tree at the spot where the baby was born, and the tree is still there. Tully proved to be quite different to Bobs previous locations. Responding to accidents was still a major part of the job, but there was time to develop other programs, such as a safety program for pensioners and the public awareness campaign for marine stingers. The QAS is much better than what we had in my younger days.

We have much better facilities, better ambulances that are better equipped, and there is a better training program for officers. Bobs ambulance career has been rewarding but he admits it came with its ups and downs. If I had the chance to do it again, there are some things I would change, Bob said. The first thing is to have a roster that has limited on-call time, thus giving officers more time with their families. Being on duty meant missing Christmas dinners, birthdays and other special family events. Bob completed his official service just as Cyclone Yasi struck the town of Tully. I suppose the one thing I didnt expect was to be blown out of the QAS by Yasi! He said he fared well himself, only losing a work shed, some fencing and a barbecue area, and has been adopted by five cassowaries. Natural food is very short and they seek alternatives, he said. They have taken a liking to my passionfruit and pineapple patches. He and his wife Gloria plan on staying in Tully and are looking forward to 44 years of marriage in July. They also plan to do a bit of touring and will be out for the Back to Blackall reunion scheduled for September 16-18.

Time to get walking

The Heart Foundation is encouraging Blackall residents to join one of its free walking groups as a way to get more physically active. The organization has teamed up with the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council to provide all the resources needed to start-up, promote and maintain local walking groups. Queensland Heart Foundation Walking State Co-ordinator Cherie Nicholas said people who enjoy regular physical activity live longer, feel more energetic, have stronger bones and muscles, feel more confident, happy, relaxed and are able to sleep better. Participating in a regular walking group can help you become healthier by reducing your risk of heart disease and stroke, Ms Nicholas said. The walking groups are suitable for people of all ages and fitness levels with the program providing a walker recognition scheme, offering incentives at various walking milestones. Heart Foundation Walking groups are led by volunteers called Walk Organisers who are provided with training and Heart Foundation Walking merchandise, as a thank you for encouraging others to become more active. It is simple to become a Walk Organiser. It only takes 5 minutes on top of the time actually spent walking, Ms Nicholas said. Tambos heritage precinct gets a boost

Tambos heritage precinct is set to undergo a series of improvements after receiving a grant of nearly $10,000 from the state governments Building Rural Communities Fund. The $9,780 grant has been allocated to the Tambo Heritage Group to allow them to undertake a number of projects at the towns heritage precinct. One such project is the redesign and reconstruction of the precincts existing display cabinets to better present archival displays to visitors. The funds will also be used to create large wall sized canvases of photographs from the historic QANTAS crash at Tambo in 1927 for display in the precinct.

One Pot Beef Casserole with Red Onion and Mushroom Serves: 4 Preparation time: 10 minutes Cooking time: 2 to 2 hours (chuck or boneless shin/gravy beef) 1 to 1 hours (topside, round, blade) 1kg beef (see above for cuts and cooking times) 1 medium red onion, cut into wedges 300g button mushrooms 1 tbsp plain flour 3 cups beef stock cup tomato paste 3 large potatoes, peeled, cut into large dice 1-2 bay leaves (fresh or dried) 4 sprigs fresh thyme or small sprigs of rosemary or parsley Preheat the oven to 180C. Cut

the beef into 2.5-3cm cubes. Season with salt and pepper, add 2 tbsp oil and mix well. Heat a large frypan over a medium-high heat. Brown the beef in 2 or 3 batches. Remove each batch and place in a casserole dish. Reduce the heat in the pan. Add a little oil, the onion and mushrooms and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring occasionally. Sprinkle in the flour and stir until the onion and mushrooms are coated. Gradually pour in the stock and add the tomato paste, stirring well. Add the potato and herbs and stir until the mixture boils. Add to the casserole dish and stir to combine. Cover the casserole dish, place it in the oven, and cook until the beef is very tender. Stir every 40 minutes or so. Add water if needed to keep the ingredients just covered.

Negotiations are continuing between Barron Agencies and the Blackall Tambo Regional Council with discussions taking place at last weeks council meeting. Paul and Jeremy Barron made a deputation to the meeting clarifying that they did not want to operate another sale following the Blackall Livestock Agents Association but wanted to sell their cattle as the last draw following the other agents and asking council to reconsider allowing them to operate at the Thursday cattle sale in conjunction with the Blackall Livestock Auction Association (BLAA). They suggested that if that request were not approved, that council consider allowing them to

run a cattle sale on a Tuesday. Paul Barron said they would prefer to operate on a Thursday, but would also consider operating fortnightly Tuesday sales to coincide with the Winton Tuesday sales. We need to keep moving forward to get this business up and going, Paul said. Jeremy Barron currently sells cattle on a commission with Landmark, but Paul said the business needed to be able to sell cattle in its own right. A lot of our clients want to sell with Barron Agencies, but we cant offer them that, and were losing business because of it, Paul said. In ten years time the Blackall

saleyards are going to be huge, thats why we want in now. The council meeting later went into committee for a discussion with saleyards manager David Carter on the matter. Following the discussion, the council decided to seek the advice of the Blackall Saleyards Advisory Committee on allowing Barron Agencies to conduct sales on a Tuesday. The information provided by the Blackall Saleyards Advisory Committee will then be brought back to the next council meeting on July 13 for further discussion.

Siblings reunite after 52 years

It was a reunion that was a long time coming when Blackall resident John Carter and his sisters Angela Bryant and Wyn Carlton got together for the first time in 52 years. The siblings reunited for the first time as a group since 1959, when the family emigrated from England to Australia, with Wyn staying behind. After residing in Shorncliffe for a number of years, Angela returned to England, where she met her husband, an American navy officer. The couple resided in England

for several years before relocating to the United States where they now reside in Phoenix, Arizona. Now returned to Australia on an 8 week visit, Angela was able to catch up in Blackall with John and Wyn, who has been living in Brisbane for the past eight years. Angela said it is probably the last time that she will return to Australia and she was enjoying the chance to catch up with her siblings. Im enjoying the whole of Blackall and even the weather. Its too hot to rain in Arizona, she said.

This is the first of a series covering government business development programs outlined at the Business Breakfast held at Blackall on April 7 2011. One program that was discussed at the breakfast was the Queensland Government Small Business Website. This site, www.business.qld.gov. au, has a lot of information on business planning and its various aspects. This is because research has shown that the better planned a business, the more it is likely to succeed. This is also relevant as the Commonwealth has announced that its drought relief programs are to be phased out in favour of programs to assist farmers better manage drought such as better business planning. The results of a trial of this approach in WA has evidently been so successful that the roll out of the program is being accelerated. None of these programs takes away from the benefits of a long term relationship with your accountant and solicitor. EXPRESSIONS OF INTEREST TAXI SERVICE

Expressions of Interest are invited for the operation of a Taxi Service for the Blackall Tambo Region. The Queensland Government Department of Transport and Main Roads has supplied a fully equipped multi seat vehicle which is wheelchair enabled for use as a taxi within this region. The Blackall Tambo Regional Council feels that a business or a community group may be better placed to operate this service but this should not preclude individuals from applying. Council will assist the operator by: Providing a completely operational taxi cab equipped with a wheelchair lift; Fully maintaining the taxi cab and meeting the cost of comprehensive motor vehicle insurance for the vehicle; Assisting with advertising and promotion of the taxi service for an initial period The successful Operator would be required to: Meet the cost of an annual license fee of approx $72; Meet the cost of fuel for the operation of the taxi; Take out a public liability insurance cover. The successful Operator would need to provide a reasonable range of taxi services to the whole region. The successful Operator would be required by the Queensland Government to obtain an Operator Accreditation to demonstrate their fitness to operate a taxi service. Drivers of taxis in Queensland are required to hold a taxi drivers accreditation. The course to obtain this can be done externally in Blackall or Tambo. This taxi will have a wide operating range and no taxi meter is required. There are maximum taxi fees that can be charged but no minimum. The successful operator will retain all fares received from the operation of the taxi. Bushmans Hotel makeover

The Bushmans Hotel could be set to get a new lease on life with a grant allowing investigation into new uses for the building. The Barcoo Retirement Village Committee has received $10,000 from the Building Rural Communities Fund to investigate a new use for the building. Chairman of the Barcoo Retirement Village Committee Owen Stockwell said the group wanted to put the Bushmans Hotel to better use and to preserve its history. Its the oldest building in Blackall and is made out of locally made bricks, Owen said. Were thinking of possibly turning it into a mens shed or an art gallery. Owen said the group welcomed input from community members on their preferred uses for the building. Certainly if people have ideas about what to do with the space, we want to hear them, Owen said. We want to see it put to viable use and fill up another empty building in town, Owen said. The funding will allow the group to investigate ways to reinvigorate the building and they have engaged assistance from George Bourne Associates in Barcaldine for the planning process. After a plan is formulated, the group then aims to obtain further funding to implement the changes.

One of Blackalls most accomplished horsemen, Graham Eagle would be very proud of his granddaughter in Dalby if he were alive to see her now. Three-year-old CharlieLee Eagle has been featured in newspapers and magazines around Australia for her riding endurance feat during the floods in Dalby at the start of the year. When her mother LeeAnne was asked to help move an exhausted mob of 200 cows and calves out of floodwaters, Charlie-Lee put her hand up to help. The cattle were kneedeep in water and boggy black soil, and had been in that situation for weeks, so it was hard work, LeeAnne said. We got them onto a road then had to walk them about six kilometres to the saleyards. Cows were calving and we had a swollen creek to cross, so it turned into a nine hour day. With the yards in sight,

Lee-Anne suggested that Charlie-Lee jump in a vehicle but she cracked up, according to her mother. It was only the fact that she could be with all the calves that made it OK, Lee-Anne said. She first gave horseriding a go when she was five or six months old, when her grandfather was handling a foal belonging to Andrew and Wendy Duncan. It wasnt broken in, only halter handled, but it was very placid and Dad popped her on bareback, Lee-Anne said. He ended up buying it for her, and shes been on horses ever since. Graham himself broke in thousands of horses from the age of 12, and travelled throughout the country working with horses. I believe hes looking down on Charlie-Lee now, Lee-Anne said. Hed be very glad she has a passion for horses and riding too.

Health promotion took on a whole new flavour when a team from North and West Queensland Primary Health Care in Longreach visited Blackall last week to deliver a healthy lifestyle program. Friendship Group was held in the morning at 60s and Better where a group of 20 local residents participated in sushi making. A presentation was provided by a Podiatrist where participants learned about the importance of

foot care with an emphasis on diabetic patient awareness. The NWQPHC team later hosted Support Your Sister at the Blackall Cultural Centre where a group of women enjoyed a fun and creative evening. A Physiotherapist taught the group warm up and cool down techniques to be used when exercising in preparation for a Zumba class after which the group made their own sushi for dinner.

Western residents interested in learning more about global warming and carbon taxes will have a chance to attend information sessions in Longreach and Barcaldine at the end of the month. The sessions will be run by executive director of the Institute of Public Affairs John Roskam and Professor Ian Plimer from the University of Adelaide. Professor Plimer is a noted Australian geologist, director of four mining companies and is noted for opposing the ideas that humans have an effect on climate change. The sessions will discuss global warming, how the carbon tax will affect Australian families, Northern Australian development and the benefits of special economic zones. The Longreach session will be held at 5:30pm on June 28 at the Longreach Civic and Cultural Centre, while the Barcaldine session will be held at 5:30 pm on June 29 at the Barcaldine Town Hall.

Council set to relocate Blackall services

Blackall services are set for a shake up with plans underway to relocate the Visitor Information Centre, library and Community Service office. Under the relocation plans the Visitor Information Centre will be moved to Ram Park, while the library will be moved into the Visitor Information Centre and the Community Services building will move into the library. The proposed changes were agreed to at last weeks Blackall Tambo Regional Council meeting with allocations to be made in the 2011/ 2012 budget to allow for the relocations. The decision to move the Visitor Information Centre to Ram Park was made to allow for improved management of the area, greater public access to the collections at Ram Park and improved parking
