Anand is a management student from ISM Pundag, Ranchi. He is currently pursuing his summer internship at XLRI Jamshedpur.

The topic How to manage a B-school for his internship program is as unique as his ambition for the future. Anand belongs to Daudnagar Aurangabad, where his father Mr. Suresh Kumar Gupta runs a well established school since 1979.An academician and a visionary, Mr. Gupta has instilled the same faith in his son,and together they plan to establish a state-of-the art B-school and technical education institute in Aurangabad ,so as to prevent student migration from the area as well as the state, in the absence of good institutions, hence his internship at XLRI will go a long way in helping him materialize his dream. As an intern, Anand is learning about the various departments and functionalities which go into making and operation of a State-of-the-art B-school. He says Under the guidance of Dr. Jittu Singh, Chairperson, International Relations, XLRI, I have been privileged to receive a golden opportunity to learn and hone my skills for my future ambition. He mentions that XLRI Director Fr. Abraham, S.J, gave him the mantra to run a successful B-School: Infrastructure, Faculty, Finance and Management. During this summer internship program, he has been introduced to various departments and their functionalities namely: Academics: Learning about the evaluation system, course program & pattern, faculty management, various day to day and specific operations, under the guidance of Dean Academics, Dr. Pranabesh Ray. Center for Global Management and Responsible Leadership: Learning about Corporate Social Responsibility, its importance in todays day and age and in the future, the importance of incorporating CSR as a part of management programs and introducing our future leaders to share the same sensibility, under the guidance of Dr. P Venugopal, Associate Director, Center for Global Management & Responsible Leadership. International Relations: Learning about the Student Exchange Program, its benefits and the process followed, under the guidance of Dr. Jittu Singh. XLRI has a tie up with many foreign universities for management studies. External Linkage: Learning about media management and its importance from a B-school perspective, under the guidance of Dr. Madhukar Shukla, Chairperson, External Linkages. Entrepreneurship Development Center: He has been introduced to the details of the EDC program under the guidance of Prof. Prabal K Sen, Chairperson Entrepreneurship Development Centre. The EDC program is a pilot program of XLRI, which is currently into its second batch of students .It had a fairly huge number of 3300 students applying to it, out of which 53 have been selected.

PGP-CEM has been designed to provide competency-based education to the eligible candidates with a view to promoting entrepreneurship in Jharkhand and rest of the country. The Program will be pursued in such a manner as to encourage critical and lateral thinking and integrate theory with practice. The ultimate objective will be (a) to create effective and successful entrepreneurs out of those who have no exposure to this vocation, but have an inclination and desire to turn into such entities, and (b) to enhance the skills of those who are currently functioning as entrepreneurs. The fact that such a futuristic initiative is taken up by one of the premier B-Schools in India, reflects the foresight of the institution. India is ninth in the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) survey of entrepreneurial countries. It is highest among 28 countries in Necessity based entrepreneurship, while 5th from the lowest in opportunity based entrepreneurship. India is the fifth largest economy in the world (ranking above France, Italy, the United Kingdom, and Russia) and has the third largest GDP in the entire continent of Asia. It is also the second largest among emerging nations. The liberalization of the economy in the 1990s has paved the way for a huge number of people to become entrepreneurs. Indians have a knack for entrepreneurship. However the society and government are not very encouraging towards entrepreneurship. To a large extent, the Indian society is risk averse. People usually seek secure and long-term employment, such as government jobs. The physical infrastructure needs to be improved. Social Attitudes, lack of capital, inadequate physical infrastructure and lack of government support are major factors of hindrance. Hence, the initiative taken up by the Entrepreneurship Development Center, XLRI, under the Chairpersonship of Prof. Prabal K Sen comes as a guiding light for many and will go a long way in shaping the social attitudes. Also, the stress on risk taking in a well informed manner will instill confidence in many a young entrepreneurs in the current and future batches, and prepare them for their future ventures. When asked about his learning experience on campus at XLRI, Anand says It is an honor to be associated with and share the same space with some of the brightest minds in the country. It is a dream come true for me. I had read and heard about the campus experiences from many alumni of the institution, and am very excited to go through the same. Interacting with the faculty, students and staff who are the best of the crowd, is a very humbling and a huge learning experience in itself, but getting an opportunity to intern at an institution of such a repute provides us students with some very important lessons outside of the classroom too. When asked about his stay on campus at XLRI, Anand says Living on campus and sharing our space with fellow students who will be the torchbearers of the future is also a very precious experience which not many are privileged to. The time which each of us will spend here will reflect throughout our lives in the garb of the lessons learnt, the friendships built and the connection shared. On a more professional note, the campus provides each one of us with an opportunity to not only build long lasting relationships on a personal level but also on a professional level, learning some & sharing some. An Institution like XLRI, is not just a College or Temple of Knowledge, it is a confluence of cultures, experiences and excellence. He is thankful to Fr. C.L George, S.J , Dean ,Administration and Finance and Mr S. Akhtar , Administrative Officer, for their support and help in providing the hostel facility, which has made his stay memorable. He is also thankful to his College faculty Mr. Uma Shankar Singh for guiding and motivating him for the internship at XLRI, and his friends Nitesh Prasad and many others for their support during the same. -by Pallavi Priya
