First-Time 87-Year-Old Bride Excited To Say I Do

Octogenarians will tie the knot on Sept. 10
by Jaime Mowers
Elizabeth Tucker never thought she would marry, but that recently changed when the 87-year-old fell in love. Tucker will tie the knot in September when she marries fellow Our Lady of Life Apartments resident 88-year-old Eugene Schmidt. I was a confirmed bachelorette, Tucker said as she sat holding hands with her fiance. I was independent and headstrong. I was never going to get married, but before you know it I fell in love with the guy. Schimdt smiles, gazing lovingly at his brideto-be. He hadnt planned on falling in love either. He spent many years with his first wife, who died of cancer, and wasnt looking for anyone else. I was blindsided, Schmidt said of being smitten with Tucker. I came here to relax and retire I wasnt looking for love. But love found them. The two became neighbors at their senior living apartment complex Our Lady of Life in Shrewsbury when Schmidt moved there in September 2009. Prior to that, both lived in the City of St. Louis. cont. p. 4-PT

Eugene Schmidt is down on one knee reenacting his marriage proposal to Elizabeth Tucker. photo by Diana Linsley

Saying I Do from page 1-PT

The two were friendly because Tucker had been friends with one of Schmidts younger sisters for the better part of three decades. Even still, they didnt see much of each other until Tucker suffered a stroke in December. When she returned to her apartment after a brief hospital stay, Schmidt was one of the residents who would often drop by to check on her. He was so kind, she said. Tucker most appreciated Schmidt helping her to the dining room every evening. He knew I wouldnt use a walker or a wheelchair, so he would walk me down to dinner, she said. Pretty soon the two were in love. Then, when they were in the chapel on Valentines Day, Schmidt got down on both knees, pulled out an engagement ring and asked Tucker to marry him. All she could say was, Yes! I didnt know whether Id be able to get back up, but I did, Schmidt said with a laugh. That night the first song of the Valentines Day dance at their apartment complex was dedicated to the lovebirds. It was kind of like their engagement party, said Ann Kuhn, administrator at Our Lady of Life Apartments. Elizabeth was going around showing off her ring. After the proposal came the wedding planning, which is still in full swing. Even though Tucker already has her dress and shoes picked out, theres still a lot to do before the big day arrives. Tucker and Schmidt will be married at St. Michael the Archangel Catholic Church in Shrewsbury with the reception to follow at Our Lady of Life. Tucker could barely contain her excitement as she talked about the wedding plans, the cake from Lubeleys Bakery and their honeymoon to a ranch resort in Mountain View, Mo. As the two walked hand in hand down the hallway, they shared loving glances and a few kisses. Im not marrying him for looks or money Im marrying him for who he is, Tucker said. Hes a wonderful person and a great companion. The two enjoy going out to lunch, partaking in short trips offered by Our Lady of Life, playing bocce ball with other residents and more. Even though theyre not married

yet, the couple is already learning the art of compromise. Tucker has agreed to play bingo once a week with Schmidt because hes letting her teach him how to play bridge. We compromise, Tucker said. Give a little, take a little. Just like any couple in love, Tucker and Schmidt cant wait for the wedding day. They chose Sept. 10, 2011, for a specific reason. Im going to be 89 the day after we get married I wanted to get married before I got old, Schmidt said with a laugh. He quickly added: Weve decided not to have children right away. Schmidt considers himself lucky to

have found love when he least expected it. He struggled to find the words to describe what he loves most about his bride-to-be. Shes Elizabeth ... and shes beautiful, he said. Tucker considers herself just as lucky. The stroke must have been given to me by God so I could meet him, she said. Its amazing. Kuhn said Our Lady of Life residents are looking forward to sharing Tucker and Schmidts wedding day with them. Theyre both lovely residents and we all hope they have many happy years together, she said.

WHERED YOU GO?

for a great doctor.

In St. Louis, where you went to high school says a lot about you. So does where you went to find a great doctor. And people like Angela Moissis are saying great things about the doctors at St. Anthonys Medical Center. The former St. Pius X High pep squad member is fired up about St. Anthonys. Her doctor delivers timely, dedicated care in a family-like setting. And thats just how this Lancer likes it. Her small school setting was friendly and welcoming, just like St. Anthonys. And with same-day and next-day appointments, theres lots for Angela to cheer about. I went to St. Anthonys. Whered you go?

SCORE Volunteers From Varied Backgrounds Work With Small Business Owners
St. Louis Chapter boasts 60 counselors; is one of 370 chapters across the country
by Marty Harris
Kirkwood resident Larry Ross spent 35 years in the banking industry before retiring as a senior vice president with Bank of America almost three years ago. Since he retired, Ross, 65, has been putting his professional knowledge to use as a SCORE volunteer helping small businesses. I just think you can really make a deep impression on individuals in this business, Ross said about SCORE. You can enjoy their successes and help them through difficult times. SCOREs primary goal is to work with small business owners either through face-to-face counseling or through cyber counseling, said Ross. In addition to that we do education. We run seminars and workshops throughout the year. Business owners typically operate on their own, Ross said. We act as

their advisory board. SCORE has three things going for it: experience, knowledge and its free, volunteer Bob Boles of Manchester summarized. Boles joined the SCORE team about two years ago after he retired. He was an educator for 12 years before buying an Evelyn Wood Reading Dynamics franchise in 1970. In 1995, he began selling seminars to schools to train teachers on how to use reading and writing to raise test scores. I got into (SCORE) to give back to the community thats been so good to me over the years, Boles said, who tells the SCORE story and gives presentations to chambers of commerce throughout eastern Missouri. What Is SCORE? SCORE, a nation-wide organization which began in the mid-1960s, stands for Service Corps of Retired Executives. However, since about half of volunteers are still in the workforce, it doesnt really apply today, so the organization is just known as SCORE, Ross said. Nationally we have 370 chapters and 13,000 counselors, Ross said. The St. Louis Chapter has 60

The St. Louis Chapter also has branches in St. Charles and Kirkwood. Ross is office manager at the Kirkwood office at 333 S. Kirkwood Road, located in PNC Bank. Ross is also incoming chairman of the St. Louis chapter. SCORE volunteers have experience in many fields from sales and marketing to retail to managing manufacturing on the shop floor. Whatever business an individual has or a prospective entrepreneur can come up with, someone in SCORE has been in that business or been in one close to it, Boles said. Kitchen Table Businesses Small business owners are encouraged to contact SCORE. Many of our clients have five employees or less, Ross said, adding their sales are predominately in the $500,000 to $1 million range. Some are called kitchen table businesses, he added. They operate out of their homes using their laptops. During this recession, many small businesses are struggling and they need to focus on their marketing, he said. Many have never created a business plan or thought about where they want

Broadway in downtown St. Louis, space it shares with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). Grand Blvd.

to go for the next three to five years. We help them put together their business plan and focus them on their marketing and we stay with our clients as long as they want us, Ross said. SCORE has many success stories. I had a client who was selling out of his basement and home, Ross said. I was able to help him get a loan to open a location where he could actually package and sell from that location. He was then able to hire two people. Ross also counseled an individual who is opening a banquet center. I reviewed his loan application and gave him advice for the information he needed to provide the bank, Ross said. He got the loan and hes now in the construction process and will be opening in a couple of months. I get energized by peoples successes, Ross said, who has a 40-client case load and works about 40 to 60 hours a month. Volunteers must commit to 20 hours a month. A Resource For Chambers Another segment of SCORE is working with chambers of commerce. We work with about 30 chambers in the St. Louis area, said Ross.

SCORE Helps Small Business Owners from page 9-PT

SCORE is another tool for chambers of commerce to utilize when educating members, said Wright. This valuable resource utilizes the experience of seasoned entrepreneurs to provide a needed service to local business persons needing assistance in running their business. The Kirkwood chamber has partnered with the local SCORE chapter in presenting seminars, in consultations, and mentor referrals, Wright added. Advice For Business Owners In addition to telling the SCORE story at chamber events, Boles gives presentations where he offers 16 strategies to improve a business owners bottom line. Those tips include counting the money, tracking customers, pricing the product right, having a business plan and servicing customers to death. Once a month, SCORE holds a seminar at St. Louis Community College at Meramec in Room So-105 on How to Start and Manage Your Own Business from 8:15 a.m. to 3 p.m. The cost is $50. This month, it will be held on Saturday, July 16, and in August on Saturday, Aug. 13. On July 22, a workshop in Starting and Running a Not-For Profit Business will be held at Justine Petersen and on Aug. 27, Small Business Marketing for 2011 will be held at the St. Charles Economic Development Center. Workshops cost up to $30. To anyone considering going into business, Boles offers advice he picked up from the SBA: Have a vision, have a plan and be willing to reach out for help. No. 3 is very difficult for some folks. They think they know everything, he said. For more information, to volunteer or to seek confidential help, call the Kirkwood office, 10 am. to 3 p.m. at 800-1527 or visit www.stlscore.org. Seniors Be Wary Of Fraud

Seniors are too often victimized by telemarketing fraud. Studies from the American Association of Retired Persons have shown that many elderly fraud victims simply dont suspect the person soliciting money on the phone could be a criminal. The FBI reports that there are as many as 14,000 illegal telemarketing operations going on at any given time. These illegal operations generate as much as $40 billion a year. Here are a few tips to reduce the risk of being victimized: A legitimate marketer or charity will not try to pressure prospective buyers into making a purchase over the phone or prospective donors into making immediate contributions. A legitimate marketer will accept a persons desire for written information about the products or charity. Telemarketing fraudsters often employ couriers to pick up payments. It is not legal for contests or sweepstakes to require winners pay a fee before they can enter a contest or claim a prize. Companies offering to recover past money lost to fraud are often fraudulent themselves. These companies will offer their fraudulent services for a fee. Money lost to a fraudulent telemarketer is likely lost forever. It is important to receive official documentation from any telemarketer before buying a product or making a donation.

Hobbies Can Be Adapted For Arthritis Sufferers

Individuals with arthritis are often stuck between a rock and a hard place. Doctors want people to exercise to keep up the range of motion in affected joints. However, even some limited movements can cause pain for those with arthritis. Arthritis sufferers can do a number of things including reoutfitting tools to reconnect with past hobbies.

are good for those with arthritis. Also, look for tools with larger grips and handles. Crafting Ceramics is one craft where the activity can also be the exercise. Using a pottery wheel or hand-molding doughs and other modeling media can be a way to stretch and work the hands and fingers. Using paintbrushes equipped with wider grips can make painting possible. Cooking With ergonomic spoons, ladles and other kitchen tools, it has never been more convenient or less labor-intensive to be an accomplished home chef. For those who love to bake but have trouble kneading and working dough, food processors, bread machines and kitchen stand mixers can take the work out of those processes.

Gardening The repetitive motions of digging and tilling as well as gripping tools can take the joy out of gardening. Raised garden beds or container gardening eliminates the stooping and bending associated with traditional gardening. With containers, individuals can place the containers on a counter or table and do all the work at a comfortable height. Choosing low-maintenance plants is another option. Plants that dont require as much pruning or repotting
