Intermediate 2 Final Exam Review

This worksheet is to help you prepare for the final exam. There are some grammar explanations and practice exercises. The exercises are similar format to the exam.

Simple Present v. Present Continuous

Must / Have to
Must: To express obligation -Only used in simple present -Use with infinitive without to Must Not: something is prohibited I must do my English homework. They must bring their passports to the airport. You must wash your hands before dinner. You mustnt smoke in here. It is illegal! I mustnt eat during class. The teacher says it is prohibited. Have to: to express obligation Do/does not have to: something is not required or not necessary, but still possible to do I have to study for the test. She has to resolve the problem. They had to work together. You dont have to drink coffee, but you can if you want She doesnt have to organize the meeting alone. I can help her also.

Present Perfect
Form: I/you/we/they He/she/it Has have + past participle has + past participle he/she/it + past participle

Question Form: Have I/you/they/we + past participle.?

Uses
Shows there is a connection with now. An action in the past has a result now.

Examples
-Where is your key? it. (I cant find it now.) I dont know. I have lost

-Is Sally here? No, she has gone to the mall. (She is at the mall now.) -I have tried to learn French, but havent succeeded. -I have always studied a lot in university.

Describes an action that started in the past and continues in the present.

Shows that an action has recently happened. - (Just is used to show that something happened recently)

-Ow! I have (just) cut my finger. -The road is closed. There has (just) been an accident. -I have (just) finished a great book!

Present Perfect Continuous


Form: I/you/we/they He/she/it have been + gerund (verb ing) has been + gerund (verb ing)

Question Form: Have I/you/they/we been + gerund (verb ing) .? Has he/she/it been + gerund (verb ing) ?

Uses
Describes an action that has recently stopped and has a connection with now.

Examples
-Paul is very tired. He has been working hard. -Why are your clothes so dirty? What have you been doing? -I have been learning English for three years. -She has been playing basketball since she was 6 years old. -They have been traveling to Europe every summer since 1995.

Describes an action that has been repeated over a certain amount of time.

Passive
The emphasis is on what is being done instead of who is doing it. The verb TO BE + PAST PARTICIPLE
