Course Description and Learning Outcomes


Syllabus: The management information systems course will teach students fundamentals of the business management information systems and their relationship to the practices of the established management information systems, an introduction to e-business with practical examples of some existing systems, principles and stages of the development of IS, hardware and software development requirements of database systems and communication networks, training needs of the users of these systems and benefits of these systems in business development and establishment. Learning Outcomes: This course deals with information systems in organizations and its

strategic role with a focus on the relationship of information systems, and aspects of moral and social developments. The course also addresses the skills to understand the technical aspects of information systems and the requirements of hardware, software and that of the communications. The courses teaches as to how IS works with all of its components in a coherent manner for achieving the desired goals. The course also deals with the challenges and opportunities faced by modern management as a result of advances in information technology. This course also deals with the speed and spread of information exchange, and how to deal with these challenges and opportunities

Delivery of Unit and Timetable


Delivery mode This course will be delivered on campus with weekly lectures, as per the timetable for this semester. There will be 14 session of a total of three hours duration, which will include up to one hour of tutorial within each weekly session. It is the responsibility of the students to take notes from the lecturers presentations during the lectures. The lecturer will provide a dot point summary of the topics of lectures on the unit website Many of the lectures are based on the textbook, which is the primary reference for the unit. Mid Semester Quiz This quiz will be multiple choices and no material will be allowed. The quiz will be of 50 minutes duration and will cover all the material covered during the first six session Case Study Project This is a group assessment item. A group of two to four students will choose a case study either related to their work or a case study assigned by the lecturer. The group will submit a project report and give a 10 minute presentation to the class. The project report will have to be submitted during session 13 and a presentation will also be given during session 14. More information will be provided on the course website and during the lecturers. Class Performance This includes class attendance as well as the individual performance during the lectures

Final Examination This will be a closed book examination and will be for duration of 90 minutes based on multiple choice and short answer questions. The examination will be conducted as per the university examination schedule. Assessment of your individual participation in group-assignments The lecturer may use a number of methods to determine individual participation of students for the Case Study Project. Based on the participation, individual marks in the same group

of students may be different. Details of these methods will be provided during the lectures.

Additional Requirements
Attendance Requirements This course will be delivered on campus with weekly lecture sessions. Anybody abstaining for more than 20% lectures on non-medical reasons will be given a DN grade. Attendance is also an important factor for Class Performance assessment.
