Date : 4 April 2011

Greetings : A very good morning I bid to Mr. Khor and friends. Today our group will present 5 themes of the short story named QWERTYUIOP by Vivien Alcock. So just sit back ,lend me your ears and enjoy. First Speaker :The theme vengeance was shown through the ghost of Miss Broome which haunts the office. Miss Broome had died of loneliness and depression after the company forced her into retirement. She had no family and her job was what she lived for. The company hired young and new secretaries to replace her. Miss Broome loves her job very much. She felt unwanted and unappreciated when she lost her job . She felt threatened as her rightful job was replaced by another person. She also was loyal to Mr. Bannister and was disappointed and angry when she lost her job . She expressed all her anger and rage at the young and new secretaries that can type faster than her. She becomes a ghost in the office to scare off the new secretaries as a sign of vengeance. Miss Broome haunts the typewriter by displaying annoying and creepy words to instill fear in the new secretaries. As an example .the typewriter displays words like You are sitting on my chair ,Go Away and We dont want you here. Lucy Beck was no exception .Although Lucy was scared as first but she managed to be brave and confront the ghost of Miss Broome. Lucy has to use a lot of correcting liquid just to complete a simple letter that must be signed by Mr Ross. After battling with Miss Broome ,Lucy successfully finishes the letter. Lucy then resolved the matter after she understands Miss Broomes pain through Henry Drake .Lucy calms Miss Broomes anger and advised her not to take revenge on anyone. Lucy wrote a letter to Miss Broome, explaining why the company had to let her go years ago .All the anger and desire for vengeance of Miss Broome was gone after Lucy makes peace with Miss Broome . Second Speaker: This story also teach us about compassion and kindness .Lucys compassion for Miss Broome is admirable because she has to face a lot of problems caused by the vindictive ghost.Lucy empathizes Miss Broome and understand that she must felt betrayed by the company when they forced her into retirement. We must learn from this story and always put ourselves in another persons shoes to understand his or her feelings, Lucy also shows compassion for her Uncle Bert when she realizes that he, like Miss Broome ,feels unloved and unwanted. Lucys mother also displays kindness when she asked Uncle Bert to live with them again after previously throwing him out.

Third Speaker : The third theme that is portrayed in his story is the determination to succeed. This story starts with the introduction of Lucy Beck, the main character. Lucy Beck is a new fresh graduate from Belmort Secretarial college, has buried a strong will in her heart to find a job.She is the weakest student in her class and only obtained one Olevel pass with a very slow typing speed. Therefore, she desperately wants a job and that makes her preserve all the more to keep the job.She is sick of being poor all the time and eating macaroni cheese every day.She also does not want to wear the hands me down clothes anymore or even lives in the same house with her Uncle Bert, a drunkard .Luckily, after that ,she gets a new job at the Ross and Bannister as a secretary. She is very thrilled and happy like she is of the world. However, when her job is threatened by the mad ghost which we already know that is Miss Broome ,she does not give up the job like a scalded cat but move on. Instead, she stays on and fights for her rights. This can be seen when she keeps splashing the correcting fluid on the typing errors of the letter she typing for Mr Ross. She keeps at it even though Miss Broome continues to make errors in the letter. She does not give up but she struggles to get it done. This shows that she is very determined with her job as for once she wants to taste the sweetness of success in life. Forth Speaker: At first it is a battle of will between Lucy and Miss Broome. Later Lucy finds out the reason for Miss Broome;s bitterness.Miss Broome hates all the new secretaries and tries her best to frighten them away. She cleverly uses the ghosts sense of loyalty to her employer to convince the ghost to leave the office.Lucy may have not done well in her secretarial course but she shows cleverness and wit. Lucy feels sorry for the vindictive ghost and writes a letter to her, exploiting why the company had to let her go forty-three years ago. She makes peace with Miss Broome and finally frees the office from Miss Broomes haunting. Last Speaker : One of the theme in the story is courage.Lucy may be young and small but she is a right little lionwhen it comes to fighting for her rights. All the other secretaries fled when they encountered the wrathful ghost of Miss Broome.Lucy, although afraid at first ,decides that she has every right to be the new secretary of Ross and Bannisters.Lucy tried to go back and sit doen in front of the typewriter and glared at it she take the bull by its horn to face the angry ghost.Lucy tried to defend her job by typing a letter to Miss Broome telling her that Mr Bannister did three years ago and how much he valued her services. At last Lucy succeed in defending her job.
