Scholarships 2011
Generous scholarships and awards are provided each year by DISTED to encourage the development of a relevant, excellent and complete ambience in the college leading to graduates with the desired attributes to serve industry and community. The Wawasan Education Foundation and Yeap Chor Ee Charitable Trust are instrumental in providing significant funding to achieve the mission. The awards are based on merit which encompasses both academic as well as socio-economic background of the applicants.

General Criteria and Conditions


1 The scholarships are open only to Malaysians who sat for the relevant examinations in 2010 and must be new or commencing students of the programmes of study. Application and award of the scholarships is based on actual examination results and, where applicable, verification of financial needs of applicants. All fees must be paid in the interim. All scholarships are only tenable for the period of study at DISTED in Penang and recipients are not allowed to hold 2 DISTED scholarships concurrently. The scholarships can only be utilised to defray the fees for the programmes of study. It is not transferable and not redeemable for cash. The scholarship award will take effect only after signing of the agreement and should the recipient withdraw from the programme of study prematurely for whatever reasons, the scholarship will not be valid and the recipient is required to refund to the college the amount of the scholarship that has been disbursed and pay all outstanding fees due to the college. Recipients must be prepared to serve the college as follows if required: Certificate, Diploma and Honour scholarship holders - 3 hours per week; Degree scholarship holders - 6 hours per week. Failure to fulfill this requirement can result in the termination or nullification of the scholarship. Applicants whose total family income is less than RM3,000 a month and wish to seek additional support for their study are required to declare their family incomes by furnishing income tax form B/BE/EA/EC or other verifiable documents. Such applicants will be required to attend a scholarship selection interview to determine the merit of each case. All decisions of the DISTED Scholarship Board on scholarship quantum and conditions are final and binding. Application Closing Date a) All scholarships except honour scholarships: 2 weeks after the release of the SPM/OLevel/STPM/ or equivalent examination results or 2 weeks after the course commencement date, whichever is the later.

b)

Honour scholarships: 2 weeks after the semester examination results are announced.

Late applications will be rejected. 10 The application form is available at the front office of the college or can be downloaded from www.disted.edu.my. 11. Other criteria and conditions specified below are also applicable to the respective scholarship category.

SPECIAL SCHOLARSHIPS
Criteria and Conditions

MERIT SCHOLARSHIPS FOR SPM/O-LEVEL STUDENTS

2. Applicants for additional support consideration in the merit scholarships are required to
furnish evidence of family income and socio-economic information.

3. Scholarship recipients must maintain a good performance level to maintain their scholarships.
The scholarship awarded will be terminated should recipients fail to maintain the following average in the respective examinations: a. An average of B in the Cambridge AS examination b. 70% in the SAM mid-term or trial examination or in every CAT semester examination c. GPA 3.0/4.0 or 3.75/5.0 in every foundation or diploma semester examination

DEGREE SCHOLARSHIPS
Partial to full degree scholarships are available for deserving students with good extra -curricular activities. Criteria and Conditions 1 Attained good academic results of at least STPM 4Bs or CGPA 3.0/4.0, A-Levels 2As and 1B, SAM TER 85.

2. Scholarship recipients must maintain a good performance level to maintain the scholarship. The scholarship will be terminated should recipients fail to maintain an average of B or GPA 3.0/4.0 or 3.75/5.0 in every semester examination.

SPORTS EXCELLENCE SCHOLARSHIPS


Criteria and Conditions 1 The scholarships are awarded to students who have fulfilled the minimum entry requirements of each academic programme and at least have represented at the state level in sports prior to

joining or while studying at DISTED. 2 The award consists of partial tuition fee waiver for the programme of study.

3. Only short listed candidates will be called for an interview. 4. All decisions made by DISTED are final. 5. Scholarship recipients must maintain a good performance level to maintain the scholarship. The scholarship will be terminated should recipients fail to maintain an average of C or GPA 2.0/4.0 or 2.50/5.0 in every semester examination and/or fail to take part in student activities specified by DISTED.

HONOUR SCHOLARSHIPS
Criteria and Conditions 1 The honour scholarships are awarded to DISTED students who excel in semester examinations. The award consists of partial to full tuition fee waiver for the ensuing semester. Award of the scholarships is based on achieving straight As in the actual full-load semester examination, ranking in class, extracurricular activities and the explicit recommendation of the Head of School. A full load is equivalent to at least 4 subjects in a normal semester and 2 subjects in a short semester. As the honour scholarships are the highest semester examination academic awards, recipients are not eligible for merit prizes for the semester concerned.

DISTED SPONSORED EXTERNAL SCHOLARSHIPS


From time to time, DISTED may sponsor scholarships in conjunction with external organisations, in addition to the internal scholarships that the college is providing, to encourage academic and character building. Criteria and Conditions 1 2 As stipulated by the respective organizations in their announcements. The scholarships are of a fixed value and tenable only for the duration of the course completed at DISTED in Penang. Recipients are not allowed to hold other DISTED scholarships simultaneously.

Further information and application form can be obtained from the relevant organizations. Announcements of the scholarships will be posted on the colleges scholarship notice board.

1. In a Dutch oven cook onion, sweet pepper, celery, and garlic in hot oil until vegetables are tender. 2. Stir in the tomato, tomato paste, water, parsley, dried herbs (if using), sugar, salt, and black pepper. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, covered, for 30 minutes.

Uncover and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes more or to desired consistency, stirring occasionally. Stir in fresh herbs, if using. 3. Meanwhile, cook pasta according to package directions. Serve sauce over hot cooked pasta. If desired, sprinkle with Parmesan cheese. Makes 4 to 6 servings. 4. Spaghetti Sauce with Ground Beef or Sausage: Prepare as above, except omit the oil. In a large saucepan or Dutch oven cook 12 ounces ground beef or pork sausage with the onion, sweet pepper, celery, and garlic until meat is brown. Drain. Continue as directed in Step 2. Per serving: 459 cal., 12 g total fat (4 g sat. fat), 53 mg chol., 386 mg sodium, 62 g carbo., 7 g fiber, 28 g pro. Daily Values: 28% vit. A, 104% vit. C, 5% calcium, 31 % iron Exchanges: 3 1/2 Starch, 2 Vegetable, 2 Medium Fat Meat, 1 Fat 5. Spaghetti Sauce with Meatballs: Prepare sauce as above. Meanwhile, in a large bowl combine 1 egg; 3/4 cup soft bread crumbs (1 slice); 1/4 cup finely chopped onion; 2 tablespoons finely chopped green sweet pepper; 1/4 teaspoon dried oregano, crushed; and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Add 12 ounces ground beef or bulk pork sausage; mix well. Shape into 24 meatballs. Arrange meatballs in a 15x10x1 -inch baking pan. Bake in a 350 degrees F oven for 15 t o 20 minutes or until done (160 degrees F). Drain. Serve with sauce and hot pasta. Big-Batch Spaghetti Sauce: Prepare as above, except use a large Dutch oven and 2 cups chopped onion, 1 cup chopped sweet pepper, 1/2 cup chopped celery, 4 cloves garlic, 2 tablespoons cooking oil, 8 cups tomato or two 28 -ounce cans diced tomatoes, one 6 -ounce can tomato paste, 2/3 cup water, 1/4 cup fresh parsley, 2 tablespoons fresh basil or 2 teaspoons dried basil, 2 tablespoons fresh oregano or 2 teaspoons dried oregano, 1 tablespoon fresh marjoram or 1 teaspoon dried marjoram, 1 teaspoon sugar, 1 teaspo on salt, and 1/2 teaspoon black pepper. Simmer, uncovered, for 30 minutes or until desired consistency. Serve as directed. To Freeze: Place sauce in freezer containers. Seal and freeze up to 3 months. To use, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Transfer to saucepan and heat through. Per 2/3 cup sauce: 110 cal., 4 g total fat (1 g sat. fat), 0 mg chol., 322 mg sodium, 17 g carbo., 4 g fiber, 4 g pro. Daily Values: 36% vit. A, 76% vit.
