INVESTIGATION ON DISSOLVING A JELLY BABY.

We are investigating the time it took to dissolve a jelly baby . In our investigation our important variables are : the amount of water we use , the temperature of the water , the shape of the jelly baby , the area of the jelly baby , the weight of the jelly baby, the liquid we use and the time it took for the jelly baby to melt. The variable we will change in our investigation is the temperature of the liquid because this helps us decide which temperature the jelly baby dissolved quickest in . The variables in our investigation we are going to keep the same are: The beaker we dissolve the jelly baby in , the weight of the jelly baby , the same amount of water , the same make of jelly baby and the liquid we use . These are the temperatures we are going to use in our experiment : 40,50,60,70 and 80 degrees centigrade because they are the safest and the most suitable temperatures . My prediction is that the hotter the temperature gets the quicker the jelly baby will dissolve . In our experiment there is one big risk this is the hot water we use to dissolve the jelly baby in. In the worst case the hot water could spill and it could badly burn you. To make sure that this doesnt happen we stood up so if the water did spill we could just step away from it. Method Firstly we collected all of our equipment which was the jelly babies, a beaker, kettle, the water, the stop watch , the thermometer and a spoon .

Once everything is safe we can start our experiment . We went over to the kettle and the teacher poured the hot water into our beaker then once we had done that we put our thermometer into the water and measured the temperature of the water if it was half way between the temperatures we added a bit of cold water and got it to the right temperature . Once that was done we got our stopwatch ready and put our jelly baby in the water and started the stopwatch once the jelly baby had dissolved we stopped the stopwatch and wrote down our results, we repeated this system 4 more times , then we had all of our results .

temperatur e 40 50 60 70 80

1st recording 212 172 119 143

2nd recording 324 180 154 59 48

3rd recording 278 210 120 72 54

averages 271 187 131 91 51

Conclusion Our results show that the hotter the water got the faster the jelly baby dissolved. This shows that my prediction was right because when a solid dissolves the particles of the solid can fit through the gaps of the liquid .In boiling water the gaps are bigger which means the particles can fit through quicker . If I did my experiment again I think I would do better times as on a couple of the tests we stopped the stopwatch either too early or too late which means our results were not that accurate , next time I would also use a different liquid like something fizzy so I could compare the two sets of results to see which liquid has a better use to dissolve solids in and how it would be affected by temperature .
