What is the difference between neurotic and psychotic? The difference between neurotic and psychotic is that psychotic is when a person is no longer able to differentiate between fantasy and reality, whereas neurotic is where a person has a maladaptive way of dealing with things, not breaking with reality. If you were diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, what would be the various ways that the anxiety could manifest itself? Anxiety could manifest itself as a panic disorder, OCD, a social phobia, or various other phobias. What would be a good adjective/synonym for neurotic? Irrational or anxious What is the difference between a hypochondriac and someone with a somatization disorder? The difference between a hypochondriac and somatization disorder is that a hypochondriac is contantly worrying about getting sick, and thinks that every little sensation might be a symptom of becoming ill. Someone with somatization disorder already believes that they are sick, and believe that they are having symptoms of illness. They tend to be overly dramatic about being sick. Distinguish paranoid schizophrenia from catatonic schizophrenia. Why is schizophrenia a psychosis? Paranoid schizophrenia exhibits itself with the person suffering from delusions (like hallucinations), either audio or visual. Catatonic schizophrenia exhibits itself with symptoms of the person going into a catatonic state, almost statue like, not moving for hours, and then they may have bursts of frantic movement. Schizophrenia is a psychosis because the subject suffers from delusions, and cant differentiate between their delusions and reality. Differentiate mania from depression. Differentiate unipolar (or major) depression from bipolar depression (also known as manic depression). Major depression is a depression that exists without any real external reason for the individual to be sad and seems to come on suddenly. The individual would feel sad/depressed for most of the day. Bipolar depression is when a person has severe depression, but swings between depression and manic episodes. These manic episodes

consist of the individual being overly excited or having increased energy (the complete opposite of depressed). Why is multiple personality not the same thing as schizophrenia? Dissociative identity disorder is not the same as schizophrenia because the individual suffering from the multiple personality disorder, isnt having delusions or necessarily breaks with reality, but are having times where their core personality seems to suffer blackout or memory loss and during those times other personalities come out, all of which are present in reality, but the core personality wont remember them, often times coming out of a blackout not knowing where they are or how they got there. Define delusion. Differentiate the various types of delusions. Delusions are false beliefs, even though the individual is presented with evidence to the contrary, they still refuse to believe that their beliefs are false or unfounded. Different types of delusions are delusions of persecution where the individual believes others are out to get them, delusions of reference where the individual believes books or newspaper articles, or even people on the television are speaking specifically to them, delusions of influence where the individual believes they are being controlled by an outside source, like aliens, and delusions of grandeur where the individual has special powers or are a powerful person. What is another term for psychosomatic? Why are psychosomatic disorders not the same as conversion disorders? Another term for psychosomatic disorder is Psychophsiological Disorder. Psychosomatic disorder is when psychological stress causes real physical illness, where as conversion disorder displays itself as symptoms of illness, like numbness or blindness, but there is no physical cause for the symptoms. Describe the DSM-IV-TR. The DSM-IV-TR describes around 250 different psychological disorders, their symptoms, how the symptoms progress, and specific criteria that must be met inorder for an individual to be diagnosed with the disorder.
