What is a Criterium? A Criterium is a bike race on a short, closed course. The average speed and intensity are appreciably higher than traditional races. In our case, the course is 6/10 of a mile or 1 Kilometer, and will be located in Canyon Village in DC Ranch. A spectator friendly event, we will be dressing up the weekends events the Criterium, or Crit for short, and the Tour with festival like activities. How long is the Tour de Scottsdale? The 8th annual Tour is officially 68.2 miles. The new, shorter course is officially 28.6 miles. Are there prizes awarded at each of these events? Criterium: Cash prizes awarded to Sr. Mens/Womens, Masters Mens/Womens and Pro Category Mens/Womens divisions. Non-cash prizes awarded to winners in all other divisions. Primes will be offered in the Jr. Men 17-18, Masters Women 40+, Masters Men 50+, Masters Men 60+, Masters Men 30+, Sr. Men IV, Masters Men 40+, Sr. Men III, Sr. Women Pro I, II, II and Sr. Men Pro I, II. Tour: Overall Mens/Womens receive non-cash prizes including merchandise, in accordance with USA Cycling regulations. How much do the two events cost? Criterium Prices vary Jr. Divisions - $10 Sr. & Masters Divisions - $30 Sr. Pro Women - $35 Sr. Pro Men - $40 Additional Races - $15 per race *Citizen Cyclists are required to obtain one-day, $10 license. What is/When is Packet Pickup? Packet Pickup is when you show up in person and get your rider bib, your t-shirt, your swag bag, and sign in. You must do this in person. No one else can do it for you. We will repeat this several times, but there is no other option. Tour: No age limit. Is there a time limit for the Tour de Scottsdale? There is a four (4) hour time limit on the 30-mile Tour de Scottsdale course. The last cyclist will be followed by a motorized escort and a RacePlaceEvents vehicle will sweep the entire course at the four-hour mark. There is a five (5) hour time limit on the 70-mile Tour de Scottsdale course. The last cyclist will be followed by a motorized escort and a RacePlaceEvents vehicle will sweep the entire course at the five-hour mark. What type of bike may I ride in the Tour de Scottsdale? You can ride any type of bike as long as you can ride it safely in large groups. Mountain bikes, recumbents and handbikes are all acceptable types of bikes. Aerobars are allowed in the Tour. Are trailers and bike seats allowed? No, due to the safely concerns of riding in a large group of people, trailers and bike seats will not be allowed. Trail-a-bikes, however, are allowed and will be charged as a tandem. Is the Tour de Scottsdale timed? YES both the Tour de Scottsdale events will be timed using the Chronotrack timing system which features a disposable chip that will accurately record each individuals time from start line to finish line. Does the Tour de Scottsdale start and finish at the same location? YES The Tour starts and finishes at Market Street in DC Ranch. What is the Scottsdale Cycling Festival and who is this ride for, anyway? In 2004, 612 cyclists participated in the first annual Tour de Scottsdale. Seven years later, the event has grown into the Scottsdale Cycling Festival with over 2,000 cyclists, 250 volunteers and 1,000 spectators participating in the Criterium at DC Ranch and Tour de Scottsdale. In its 8-year history the Tour de Scottsdale has heightened awareness of the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, an organization that champions the completion and sustainability of the McDowell Sonoran Preserve for the benefit of this and future generations. This year, the Scottsdale Cycling Festival was nominated for an International Society of Special Events Zonie Award for Best Nonprofit event. The Tour de Scottsdale has become known for the natural beauty of the challenging course and the Criterium at DC Ranch is beginning to build a reputation for its highly technical course. The Tour de Scottsdale is for EVERYBODY. For professional cyclists, this is an opportunity to stretch your legs in an event that fosters competition in a relaxed environment. For recreational cyclists, this is your chance to ride with some giants along a route long celebrated for its beauty. While the way is long and hilly, there is fixed and roving support, including repairs, food, and water. Experience the McDowell Sonoran Preserve like never before. The Criterium at DC Ranch has categories for any cyclist but due to the technical nature of the course we recommend that only skilled cyclists attempt the challenge.

Do ALL cyclists have to ride the 70-miles? No. Since the Scottsdale Cycling Festival is a family event for all ages. You have the option of riding 70 or 30 miles; or, in the Criterium at DC Ranch on a closed course; or in the Kids Races or Family Fun Ride. What should I wear on race day? A bicycle helmet is required. Consider wearing padded lycra cycling shorts and a jersey with rear pockets for snacks, sunscreen and a route map. Padded cycling gloves, stiff rubber-soled shoes and eye protection are highly recommended. Carry reusable water bottle on your bike to help combat dehydration from exertion and heat. What can I expect on the route? Cyclists in the Crit ride in a counter-clockwise direction, cyclists in the Tour ride in a clockwise direction. The Criterium course is highly technical with one climb and a short, steep downhill leading in to a turn. Roads are closed for the Criterium, Kids Races and Family Fun Ride. The Tour de Scottsdale courses include approximately 1,400 feet in elevation changes with a long ascent over the first 25 miles of the 70-mile course. Aid stations on the Tour courses serve water, electrolyte drinks, Gu, and fruit. If you have specific needs, please come prepared. What if my bike breaks down during the event? No problem! The Criterium at DC Ranch has a neutral wheel pit provided by White Mountain Road Club that will assist you. In the Tour de Scottsdale there will be five (5) aid stations located along the route and multiple SAG wagons to assist you with mechanical problems or first-aid situations. If a major mechanical malfunction occurs, the SAG wagons will transport you back to the Expo.

When do I receive my medal and/or award? All cyclists receive their medal of completion in the finish chute on 90th Place through Market Street in DC Ranch. All other awards are presented at the Awards Ceremonies. At the Criterium at DC Ranch the ceremonies will be throughout the day at the podium; at the Tour de Scottsdale the ceremony will be at 10:00 a.m. at Market Street Plaza. Awards and medals will no longer be mailed. What will I find at the Tour Finish Line? The Chute After crossing the finish line you will be directed in to the chute. Volunteers will provide you with your medallion. For safety purposes, do not remain in the chute area once you have received your medal. Information Booth The Information Booth will be set up for your convenience after the Finish Chute, should you have any questions or need any information on Race Day. First Aid If you feel dizzy, ill or have other medical problems, please check with the First Aid tent at the finish, staffed by Spooner Physical Therapy. All accidents must be reported to the Information Booth at the finish or at one of the aid stations along the route. Results

Results will be streaming live at Market Street Plaza on multiple T.V. screens. Results will be available on RacePlaceEvents.com by midnight on Sunday, Oct. 2. Contact RacePlace with any corrections at http://raceplaceevents.com/contact.php. Photography Zazoosh Photography will photograph cyclists and volunteers at the start/finish line and on course. Are there rules to the Tour and mini-Tour? Yes. The following rules must be followed: o Violation of any rule listed below may result in disqualification from the event. o All participants must wear a helmet. o All participants must show and practice good sportsmanship. o All participants must obey police, SAG vehicles or other event officials. o No participant may draft or hold onto a motorized vehicle. o All participants must cycle the complete official route in order for their finish to be recognized. o All participants must stay behind and not pass the lead vehicle. o All participants must wear their bib number and it must be easily visible. o All participants must wear their timing chip in the appropriate fashion in order for their time to be recognized. o No headphones are allowed. o Team tactics that endanger, or impede the progress of other cyclists are prohibited. o All participants must display courteous behavior to police, event volunteers and event officials as well as obey their instructions. o All participants must obey traffic control officers and personnel, and traffic control devices and signs. o All participants must obey the AZ state traffic laws or risk being disqualified: A person riding a bicycle on a roadway at less than normal speed of traffic at the time and place and under the conditions then existing shall ride as close as practicable to the right-hand curb or edge of the roadway under any of the following situations: If overtaking and passing another bicycle or vehicle proceeding in the same direction. If preparing for a left turn at an intersection or into a private road or driveway. If reasonably necessary to avoid conditions, including fixed or moving objects, parked or moving vehicles, bicycles, pedestrians, animals or surface hazards. Persons riding bicycles upon a roadway shall not ride more than two abreast except on paths or parts of roadway set aside for the exclusive use of bicycles. All participants must stay to the right of cones on the course unless otherwise directed by police. o All participants must ride no more than two abreast. o All participants must clear the finish chute upon finishing the race. It is a safety hazard to have groups of cyclists congregating in the finish line chute. All participants are solely responsible for all of their items and personal belongings. This is a rain or shine event. Please be prepared for weather conditions.
