Inaugural Champions of Diversity Awards to be held in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, California (September 1, 2009) - CaliforniaALL (Aspire*Learn*Lead) proudly announce their Inaugural Champions of Diversity Awards Gala, to be held on the evening of Wednesday, October 21, 2009 from 5:30-9:30, at the Radisson Hotel in Sacramento. This event will include a dinner, awards ceremony and silent auction. The Inaugural Champions of Diversity Awards will celebrate individuals and corporations who are making a difference and serve as positive role models for all of us, said Ruthe Ashley, CaliforniaALLs President/CEO. The award recipients epitomize what can be achieved with an education and determination to succeed. Serving as the Honorary Event Chair for the event will be Congresswoman Doris Matsui. Funds raised from this event will help CaliforniaALL with its goal of building pipelines from pre-school to the professions. The Gala will honor three distinguished guests with a Champion of Diversity Award and two corporations with an Innovation Award and a Presidential Corporate Award. The Champions of Diversity selected by CaliforniaALL are: John Chiang, Gwen Moore, and Gloria Molina. The Innovation Award will go to Walmart Corporation and the Presidential Corporate Award to Southern California Edison. John Chiang, as the California State Controller, is the Chief Fiscal Officer of California and acts as the states independent fiscal watchdog; Chiang provides sound fiscal control of over more than $100 billion in annual receipts and disbursements of public funds. He uses his audit authority to uncover fraud and abuse of taxpayer dollars and provides fiscal guidance to our local governments. Prior to her current role as Founder and CEO of GeM Communications Group, Gwen Moore distinguished herself as a member of the California Assembly for 16 years from 1978-1994. She gained a national reputation as Chair of the prestigious Assembly Utilities and Commerce Committee which had jurisdiction over the California cable television industry, emerging business enterprises, international trade and tourism, California ports, trucking issues, and all investor-owned utilities including water, telecommunications, and energy. Gloria Molina is a member of the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors and is the current chairwoman of the LA County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Her illustrative experience includes Ms. Molina as being the first Latina in history to be elected to the CA State Legislature, the LA City Council, and the LA County Board of Supervisors. CaliforniaALL seeks to close the achievement gap and enhance the success of Californias students from pre-school to the professions to ensure the education and diversity of the states workforce and leadership. CaliforniaALL was founded by the California Public Utilities Commission, the California Public Employees Retirement System, the State Bar of California and the California Department of Insurance.
