Lord of the Flee appeated in 2954, twas William
Golding’ first published covel, and years latee he said that
writing the book was “like lamenting the lost childhood of
the world”. Golding who was born in 1912 and served in
the Royal Navy duzing the Second World Was, worked for
many years as a schoolmaster. He went on to produce
another eleven novels, among them The Iuheritors,
Pincher Marti, The Spire, and Darkness Visible. He won
the Booker Prize in ra80 with Rites of Passage. Golding
vwas avwarded the Nobel Prize for Litcrature ia r983 and
‘was knighted in 1988. He died in 1995.
Nigel Williams was born in Cheshiré in r948, educated at
Highgate School and Oriel Collegs, Oxford and is maeried
with thiee sons, He is the author of TV and stage plays,
and several novels, inctuding the bestselling Winbledor
Poisoner, They Cane from sw19, East of Wimbledon and
