Glossary
absolute formatting A type of formatting that applies under any condition. access control list A display of all principals that have been granted or denied rights to an object. access level A predefined set of rights, determined by an administrator, which can be applied to several users. access right The actions a user or group can perform on objects (including folders and categories). active database A database that has been selected for use in a report. Active Server Page Web page that runs under Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) version 3.0 and later. They combine HTML, VBScript or JScript, and ActiveX controls to create dynamic web pages that can be viewed from any of the most popular web browsers. Short form: ASP ActiveX Control A Custom Control for Visual Basic 4.0 and above that incorporates the Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) technology. administration rights The level of security that determines whether you can administrate Polestar or not. advanced right A granular right that is set to override the corresponding right in an access level for a principal. aggregate function A function that summarizes data (sums, calculates an average, identifies a maximum value, and so on). Often associated with SQL data sources. aggregated value

A value that has been created using aggregation methods (None, Count, Sum, Min, Max, and Average) during the Universe design. The value is applied to a measure. alert A message that is raised to let the user know that an event has happened. alias An alternative name assigned to a data source or a database table. analysis type A visualization for viewing your data to perform analysis. For example, a Comparison Analysis type is used for viewing the differences between values. analytic A pre-built analysis technique for extracting business insight from data and creating alerts, lists, and interactive data visualization applets. application server Software that provides an interface between an operating system and the application programs of users. argument An item, or one of a group of items, that receives the action of a function. It provides information that the function needs in order to operate. array A group of values, separated by commas. ASP Web page that runs under Microsoft's Internet Information Server (IIS) version 3.0 and later. They combine HTML, VBScript or JScript, and ActiveX controls to create dynamic web pages that can be viewed from any of the most popular web browsers. Long form: Active Server Page Authentication Type The verification of the identity of a user and the user's eligibility to access an object. Such an example is Windows NT Authentication. BLOB field

A database field whose data consists of Binary Large Objectssuch as bitmap graphics, images, OLE objects, metafiles, and so on. BOE A business intelligence platform that powers the management and secure deployment of specialized end-user tools for reporting, query and analysis, and performance management on a scalable and open services-oriented architecture. Long form: BusinessObjects Enterprise Boolean A formula that returns a Yes/No (TRUE/FALSE) value. Boolean expression An expression that defines a logical relationship between two or more items. The expression is either TRUE or FALSE. breadcrumb A visual path of your exploration. breakdown button A button within the Exploration tab that corresponds to one of the chosen exploration values. The button is used with other Breakdown buttons and allows you to focus upon a dimension or measure. Clicking the button changes the visualization. business dashboard A web-based display of analytics and objects that display information about your business and allow you to provide visibility, organization, and monitoring to your business activities. Short form: dashboard business question A business-oriented query that is answered by one or more objects in BusinessObjects Enterprise. They are linked to these objects and are accessed and edited via the Encyclopedia. Business Views A collection of components created in Business View Managera flexible and reliable multi-tier system. BusinessObjects Enterprise A business intelligence platform that powers the management and secure deployment of specialized end-user tools for reporting, query and analysis, and performance management on a scalable and open services-oriented architecture. Short form: BOE

BusinessObjects Enterprise Inbox A destination for a scheduled object. When scheduling an object, you can specify that you want the system to store the object instances in the inbox of one or more users. You can also send existing report objects or instances to a user's inbox by using the "Send to" feature. Short form: inbox BusinessObjects InfoView A web-based interface that end users access to view, schedule, and keep track of published reports. InfoView consolidates the presentation of a company's business intelligence information and allows it to be accessed in a way that is secure, focused, and personalized to users inside and outside an organization. Short form: InfoView BusinessObjects Voyager A powerful, web-based OLAP analysis tool that can help you to gain insight into business data and make intelligent decisions that impact corporate performance by interactively defining queries to explore your data. Short form: Voyager BusinessObjects Web Intelligence A web-based query and analysis tool that enables users to track, understand, and manage corporate data using a simple browser as their interface, while maintaining tight security over data access. Short form: Web Intelligence calculated data field A field that holds a value that comes from a calculation rather than coming directly from a database. calendar A customized list of run dates for scheduled jobs. When users schedule objects, they can use a calendar to run the job on a predefined set of dates. Calendars are particularly useful when users want to run a recurring job on an irregular schedule, or if administrators want to provide users with sets of regular scheduling dates to choose from. case In a case statement, the combination of an (If, Then) condition and action. case statement A mapping rule that treats different cases based on conditions.

case statement formula A formula in a case statement. case-sensitive Pertaining to the differentiation between upper-case and lower-case letters. A program differentiates between upper-case and lower-case letters when evaluating a text string. category facet A type of facet available to you within the Exploration tab. Category facets are grouped and allow you to select categories and their values. You can filter your data further with Category facets. A Category facet can be Suggested or Selected. chart component A bar, line, or other chart object that you drag into the Voyager analysis window to visualize your data. charttype A chart that is categorized under Analysis type. For example, the Comparison Analysis type includes a vertical bar chart. CMS Add-On The necessary components that are added to the CMS during the installation of Polestar. command A directive given to a program to initiate an action. comparison analysis type An Analysis type used for viewing the differences between values via a chart, such as a vertical bar chart. component An element that you work on in the Data Federator Designer workspace; either a target, a datasource, a mapping, a constraint, a domain table or a lookup table. composite row A row that results from a database join operation on at least two data source tables. condition The "If" part of a formula in an If-Then-Else formula. The set of circumstances that must take place (be true) to trigger the Then (or consequence) part of the formula.

conditional expression In a mapping formula, an expression that contains conditions (such as "if ..." and "then..."). conditional formatting A type of formatting that applies only under certain conditions. conditional formatting formula An expression that applies specific attributes to objects or sections only if certain criteria are met. conditional property A property that is performed on an object only if a comparison statement returns a value of True. connection pool A database connections cache, maintained by Connection Server, to allow the re-use of connections to a data source. Connection Server The data access layer that manages data source access by Business Objects applications. consequence The Then part of the formula in an If-Then-Else formula. The action that takes place if the If condition is met. constant A value that is fixed and unchanging as opposed to a variable value, which can take on various values depending on the circumstances. constraint A test that you define in Data Federator to verify a property of a mapping container document A file that contains an embedded or linked OLE object. content search facet A type of facet used to aid content search via keywords. The facet construction is based upon the keywords used. context A defined group of objects in a query that share a common business purpose. contribution analysis type

An Analysis type used for viewing distribution of values. For example, a pie chart. Control A key on the keyboard of your computer. Control click A method of selecting multiple values within an application. This accomplished by pressing the Control key and using the mouse. core table A datasource table that has columns that map to the key of a target table. creation rights The level of security that determines whether you can create Information Spaces within Polestar or not. Cross-Tab A report component that summarizes and presents data in a compact row and column format that makes it easy to compare data and identify trends. crosstab component A two-dimensional table object that you drag into the Voyager analysis window to begin analyzing your data. Crystal Reports A reporting tool that allows users to create feature-rich reports and integrate them into web and Windows applications. Crystal Reports Explorer An application which allows users to create and modify reports, design layouts, and perform data analysis using a zero client interface. Crystal Reports Viewer A report viewer that is installed locally on your computer, which you can use to view downloaded Crystal reports without being connected to BusinessObjects Enterprise. cube A multi-dimensional or OLAP database in which data is summarized, consolidated, and stored in "dimensions" (each representing information such as customer, or product line) and "measures" (for example sales, cost, or profit), enabling improved processing time

and storage space requirements over traditional data storage methods such as relational databases. custom function A procedure you create to evaluate, make calculations on, or transform data. When you use this function in a formula, all the operations in its definition are performed without you having to specify them individually in the formula itself. Thus, it provides a way for you to share and reuse formula logic which, in turn, makes it easier and less time consuming for you and your users to create reports. DAO The part of the Microsoft Access Database Management System that actually handles your database data for versions of Access 2.0 and later. It uses Microsoft's Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) technology to provide access to Access data through an object-oriented approach. Long form: Data Access Object Engine dashboard A web-based display of analytics and objects that display information about your business and allow you to provide visibility, organization, and monitoring to your business activities. Long form: business dashboard data access driver The database-specific software that manages access between Connection Server and a source of data. data access network layer The database middleware type, for example ODBC or JDBC. Short form: network layer Data Access Object Engine The part of the Microsoft Access Database Management System that actually handles your database data for versions of Access 2.0 and later. It uses Microsoft's Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) technology to provide access to Access data through an object-oriented approach. Short form: DAO data field The basic building block of a record. data source A set of data for planning and/or reporting purposes, defined by a unique combination of dimensions, time series, and other columns.

data table The raw data of your Information Space in Polestar displayed in a table. data type A classification of the data that appears in a field or formula. data-access application A generic term for a database, a plain file, or some other application that lets Data Federator, or other applications, access data. database Accumulation of data stored and arranged in a software program. database middleware The vendor-specific component of a database that provides API access to the data. datasource A pointer to a source of data; it points to and represents the data that is kept in a data-access application. datasource catalog A collection of data sources. DDK A Java-based software toolkit that you can use to develop data access drivers for data sources for which there are no existing drivers. Long form: Driver Development Kit debug To eliminate errors that occur when you run a formula. delegated administrator A user who has been granted a subset of administrative rights for object management in BusinessObjects Enterprise. delivery rule A setting that defines how documents in publications are processed and distributed. destination A place where scheduled or sent objects and publications are sent. Destinations include user inboxes, email, and FTP. Details area

A collection of one or more Details sections. Details section The core section of a report. You structure the report in this section by inserting data fields, formulas, and other report elements. dictionary A one-stop, ready-to-use source of data that is usually created for end users by computer professionals within the organization. It takes away the need for the end user to search multiple databases, struggle with links, build formulas, and decode cryptic field names. The user just selects the data needed from it and builds the report. dimension A collection of related data members, which represents one aspect of a business; for example, products or sales. Discussions A feature which enables users to create notes for reports, hyperlinks, programs, and other objects in InfoView. divider A control used in applications to modify the size of pane items. DLL A special kind of file that contains Windows functions. Long form: dynamic link library domain The set of permissible values of a column; a domain lets you define permissible values more stringently than a type. domain table A table that defines a domain in Data Federator. draft datasource A datasource that you are working on; you can modify a draft datasource, but it is not available to use in a mapping. drill To change the way data is displayed in a report to gain a more specific understanding of where the data comes from ("drilling down") or to gain a higher level understanding of the data by putting data sets together ("drilling up"). A Java-based software toolkit that you can use to develop data access drivers for data sources for which there are no existing drivers. Short form: DDK dynamic link library A special kind of file that contains Windows functions. Short form: DLL dynamic prompt A request for information from the user which may appear upon viewing an object which may determine what data appears in the document. dynamic recipient A publication consumer that exists outside of the BusinessObjects Enterprise system. dynamic recipient source An object that provides a list of dynamic recipients and their IDs, names, and email addresses. This object can be a Crystal repot, Desktop Intelligence document, Web Intelligence document, or custom-coded data provider. embedded object An object that contains a presentation of the object, all of the data pertaining to the object, and information about the application used to create it. empty date A date that contains neither month, day, or year, and thus does not print. Designated as Date (0, 0, 0). empty number A field value that is typically printed when a value does not meet a specific condition in a numeric If-Then-Else formula. Designated as zero (0). empty string A string that contains no characters. Designated as "". emulator A device, computer program or system that accepts the same inputs and produces the same outputs as a given system. Encyclopedia

A user panel inside BusinessObjects Enterprise for creating business intelligence reference guides. evaluation time The stage in the reporting process when a formula gets evaluated. event A preset trigger for scheduling and processing objects, giving you more control over scheduling; you can set up these triggers so that reports are processed when specified parameters are met. expert A tool designed to take you through various aspects of report creation by using a series of tabs. Simply begin at the first tab and proceed through the remaining tabs. exploration facet A type of facet used to aid navigation through an Information Space. The facet construction is based upon the context of the Space. exploration interface The user interface that allows the exploration of Information Spaces. export To convert a report to another file format, or to distribute a report to a disk file or through email. facet A collection of possible values (labels) available to the user. It groups concepts based on a category. For example: the Genre facet of a Music library incorporates values such as Rock 'n' Roll, Classic, and Pop. Often maps to a data record field or attribute. faceted navigation The ability to navigate through a collection of objects by selecting facet labels. Faceted Navigation has the following characteristics: select Labels to refine the search result set; guide users by presenting Facets and Labels in a particular order; ensure Facet and Labels which lead to an empty result are not displayed. field The basic building block of a record. field width The size of the field in the originating database. It is generally fixed, and values in the field may take up all or only a part of the allotted

width. The program includes Trim functions for removing excess white space from field values that do not fill their respective fields. file A collection of related data stored under one name. filter An expression that limits the data returned. final datasource A datasource that cannot be modified, and that you can use in a mapping. flag A character or group of characters used to highlight or identify items of interest to call them to the user's attention. folder A location for storing objects. form letter A letter that can be reproduced, personalized, and customized using the program's powerful text object capabilities. It generally includes both text and field values. formula syntax The set of grammar rules you are required to follow when creating formulas using the formula language. Formula Workshop A feature used to create and edit most kinds of formulas. It consists of a toolbar, a tree that lists the types of formulas you can create or modify, and an area for defining the formula itself. The area for defining the formula changes depending on the type of formula you are creating. function A built-in procedure or subroutine used to evaluate, make calculations on, or transform data. functional expression In a mapping formula, an expression that performs a function on a value. glossary term

A definition of a term that is used in the objects it is associated with in the Encyclopedia. grid An underlying network of "lines" that are similar to the lines on graph paper. group A set of records that are related to each other in some way. Group Footer A section created by the program whenever you insert a group, a summary, or a subtotal. This section is typically used to display the summary or subtotal. Group Header A section created by the program whenever you insert a group, a summary, or a subtotal. This section is typically used to display the name of the group or some other identifying information. guided analysis A way of arranging reports or objects in a set order, called a storyline, which users can follow, enabling them to see connections between the objects. guideline Non-printing line that you can use to align, move, and resize objects with precision. highlight To display data or objects in order to make it more obvious. historical instance An instance of an object that is older than the most recent instance of that object. history All of the instances of an object that have been run or are scheduled to run. Home A tab that allows users to perform a search within Polestar. This tab is the entry point to Polestar. HTML 3.2

A page-based HTML export format that is intended for backward compatibility with older browsers that do not support HTML 4.0. The format cannot maintain all of the layout precisely. All of the images in your report are saved externally and a hyperlink is inserted in the exported HTML output. Therefore, this export format generates more than one file in the output. HTML 4.0 A page-based HTML export format that preserves the layout and formatting of the report by using DHTML. All of the images in your report are saved externally and a hyperlink is inserted in the exported HTML output. Therefore, this export format generates more than one file in the output. hyperlink An InfoView object that links to a website outside of BusinessObjects Enterprise. in-place editing The ability to change an OLE object's properties from within an OLE container application such as Crystal Reports. The menu items change to provide the editing tools from the server application so that you can make changes easily. in-place ruler The ruler that appears when you are editing a text object. This ruler enables you to set tabs and position objects with precision. inbox A destination for a scheduled object. When scheduling an object, you can specify that you want the system to store the object instances in the inbox of one or more users. You can also send existing report objects or instances to a user's inbox by using the "Send to" feature. Long form: BusinessObjects Enterprise Inbox indexed field A field in the database that is in a specific order to speed up the retrieval of particular records. Instead of searching through all the data in all the records, the program goes first to the index and finds a pointer that directs it to the specific record it is looking for. indexing A process of sorting and converting data (from an Universe, Information Space) into a cache suitable for easy search and retrieval.

Information Space owner A Polestar user who created an Information Space, they are the owner of that Space. InfoView A web-based interface that end users access to view, schedule, and keep track of published reports. InfoView consolidates the presentation of a company's business intelligence information and allows it to be accessed in a way that is secure, focused, and personalized to users inside and outside an organization. Long form: BusinessObjects InfoView inheritance The method by which rights set on groups or folders are passed to subgroups, subfolders, individual users, and files in BusinessObjects Enterprise. insertion point A vertical line that indicates the point at which any text that you type in will be inserted. Interactive Parameters A feature for Crystal Reports that allows users to modify parameter values without refreshing information from the database. The main benefit of this feature is that it provides guided interactivity on the report canvas without causing processing demands on the database. J2ME A subset of the Java platform aimed at providing a certified collection of Java APIs for the development of software for small, resource-constrained devices such as cell phones and PDAs. Long form: Java 2 Micro Edition JAD file A file commonly used to package Java applications or games that can be downloaded to mobile phones. The JAD files describe the MIDlets (Java ME applications) that are distributed as JAR files. Long form: Java Application Descriptor file Java 2 Micro Edition A subset of the Java platform aimed at providing a certified collection of Java APIs for the development of software for small, resource-constrained devices such as cell phones and PDAs. Short form: J2ME

Java Application Descriptor file A file commonly used to package Java applications or games that can be downloaded to mobile phones. The JAD files describe the MIDlets (Java ME applications) that are distributed as JAR files. Short form: JAD file Java Database Connectivity A Java API developed by Sun Microsystems that acts as an interface between a developers Java code and a database. It provides a mechanism for the developer to use to connect to a specified database, request information about the database, and then select information from it. Short form: JDBC Java Naming and Directory Interface An interface to seamlessly connect to diverse naming and directory services. Short form: JNDI JavaBean A Java component developed using the Connection Server Driver Development Kit, that enables access to various data sources. JavaBean driver A data access driver that manages JavaBeans developed using the Driver Development Kit (DDK). JDBC A Java API developed by Sun Microsystems that acts as an interface between a developers Java code and a database. It provides a mechanism for the developer to use to connect to a specified database, request information about the database, and then select information from it. Long form: Java Database Connectivity JNDI An interface to seamlessly connect to diverse naming and directory services. Long form: Java Naming and Directory Interface key constraint A constraint that verifies that all the keys in a table are unique. keyword search A method that allows users to search for data containing the words they have entered. label

A value within a facet. For example: 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007 are possible values for a Year facet. legend A data grid within the Exploration tab that displays data based upon the chart. It corresponds to the measures and dimensions displayed by the chart, and can be used for analysis. link A field that is common to two or more databases and that serves as a connecting point between those databases. linked object An object that contains a presentation of the object and a pointer to a defined part of the server document. When you modify the original object in the server document, the links assure that the object in your report is modified automatically as well. Conversely, if you modify the object in the container document, the original object file is modified as well. live header A header that changes dynamically with the content of a field. locale A definition of a user's environment. It specifies conventions for the culture and language of the environment, such as time formatting, numeric formatting, and currency. logoff Pertaining to a procedure for a user to end their session within the application. logon Pertaining to a procedure for a user to begin a session within the application by identifying themselves with a username, password, and Authentication Type. lookup table A table that you create, and whose content you enter, in Data Federator; the lookup table maps a column of values to another column of values. Manage A tab that allows users to administrate Polestar, for example: Information Space creation.

managed report A Crystal report file (.rpt) that resides in the BusinessObjects Enterprise CMS repository, and is accessed programmatically through an instance of the InfoObject class. MDAS Server A server that provides BusinessObjects Enterprise client applications such as BusinessObjects Voyager with an extensible and efficient framework for accessing multi-dimensional (OLAP) data. Long form: Multi-Dimensional Analysis Services Server measure facet A type of facet that represents measures within Polestar. When clicked and a value is selected, the visualization is impacted. member A base unit of data, representing an entity in a multi-dimensional OLAP database, and which can have both parent and child members. metadata Information about how data is stored in a database, including table and column names for relational databases, or dimensions, hierarchies, levels, and members for OLAP databases. MIDlet A Java program for embedded devices, more specifically the Java ME virtual machine. Generally, these are games and applications that run on a cell phone. model A user-specified configuration of the predictive calculation engine containing influencers, goals, and the populations within which relationships are quantified. Modify Rights right A right that allows a delegated administrator to grant to other principals any rights, including rights that the delegated administrator does not have. Multi-Dimensional Analysis Services Server A server that provides BusinessObjects Enterprise client applications such as BusinessObjects Voyager with an extensible and efficient framework for accessing multi-dimensional (OLAP) data. A customizable InfoView page which can display objects and web pages and which can be set as a user's portal to the rest of the functionality of InfoView. nest To use one expression inside another. network layer The database middleware type, for example ODBC or JDBC. Long form: data access network layer New Connection wizard The Business Objects application component that guides you through the process of creating a connection to a source of data. not-null constraint A constraint that verifies that none of the values in a column are null. notification A feature in InfoView which allows you to send an email to a specified address when a scheduling job is completed or if it fails. You can also indicate whether or not the completion or failure of the job will appear be audited, if auditing is enabled for BusinessObjects Enterprise. null The absence of a value within a database field for a given record. It does not mean zero because zero is a value. null string An empty string. It contains no characters. numeric Pertaining to a type of data on which you can perform arithmetical calculations. The designation refers to the way the data is treated by Crystal Reports and database programs, not to the way the data looks to you. object Items in the BusinessObjects Enterprise repository. object frame A rectangular cursor that appears as an aid to placing database fields and formulas on your report. object package

An object which functions as a folder for other objects, allowing you to schedule them simultaneously. Objects A tab within the Information Space creation and Information Space modification dialogs. Used for selecting and modifying the Universe objects that make up your Information Spaces. ODBC A standard developed by the Microsoft Cooperation. It is an interface that gives applications the ability to retrieve data in data management systems using SQL for accessing the data. Such an interface allows a developer to develop, compile, and ship applications without targeting specific database management systems. Long form: Open Database Connectivity OLAP A technology that allows multidimensional, interactive analysis of data. Long form: Online Analytical Processing OLE container application An application that can contain and process OLE objects created elsewhere (like Paint or Paintbrush). OLE server application An application that can create OLE objects that can then be placed in documents created by container applications. on-demand subreport A type of subreport that appears only as hyperlinks in the main report. The actual data is not read from the database until the user drills down on the hyperlink. Short form: ODBC open driver A data access driver developed using the Business Objects Driver Development Kit (DDK). operator A special symbol that describes an operation or an action to take place between two or more values. order of precedence A sequential hierarchy of arithmetic operations in a formula that involves multiple arithmetic operations. Multiplication (*) and division (/) are performed first (first tier operations), followed by addition (+) and subtraction (-) (second tier operations). When there are multiple operations involving the same tier, the hierarchy dictates that the operations are performed from left to right. You can use parentheses, if you wish, to alter the normal order. overview A short summary of an object in the Encyclopedia that includes the title, description, purpose, and usage of the object. owner right A right that applies only to objects that a principal owns. Page Footer A section that prints at the bottom of each page in a report. This section is typically used for page numbers, chapter names, and other identifying information. Long form: Portable Document Format personalization The process of filtering data in dynamic content source documents so that only data that is relevant to recipients is displayed in publication instances. population The entire set of values that may be tested statistically, as opposed to a sample which is a subset of the set of values. It does not necessarily refer to a group of people; it can refer to the number of automobiles produced on an assembly line or the number of construction companies bidding on a project. population standard deviation A statistical test of how the values in an entire population (all values) deviate from the mean or average value for that population. This test is most often used when all values are being evaluated as opposed to just a sample of those values (StdDev). Portable Document Format A document format that preserves the layout of a document when it distributed between different systems. Short form: PDF post-filter A filter that limits the results of a mapping rule; post-filters operate on data after the table relationships. pre-filter A filter that limits the data that comes from data sources; pre-filters operate on data before the mapping formulas. primary key A column that is guaranteed to contain unique values, and whose values identify all of the rows in a table. primary key constraint A constraint that prescribes that all the values of a column must be unique. profile A set of parameters which control the personalization of the content that users see when they consume publications.

profile target A data source that a profile filters and interacts with to provide personalized data views in publications. profile value A static value, Crystal Reports expression, Web Intelligence expression, or Desktop Intelligence expression that is mapped to a user or group in a profile and determines the personalized data view in publications. prompt An element that helps users set a value for report parameters. It can include either a static list of values that is stored in each report, or a dynamic list that is retrieved from a database. prompt group A container that holds the individual prompts that are needed for a Cascading prompt. A set of values that fall between and include a defined upper and lower limit. record A complete unit of related information. An electronic file folder that holds all of the data on a given entity. It contains one or more fields that contain the specific pieces of data of interest. report An organized presentation of data. report bursting A process in Publishing in which the source document data is refreshed and personalized for recipients. Report Footer The last section of a report in the Design Tab. You can place a summary in this section that you want to appear only on the last page of a report. Report Header The first section of your report in the Design Tab. You can place a title in this section, or any data you want to appear only on the first page of your report. report part A report object displayed by itself in a viewer without the rest of the report page. request A set of criteria that specifies the subset of data that you want to use for your report. rights collapse During migration from version 6.x to version XI R2, the setting of rights on a migrated object that were not explicitly set on the original object. rights override A behavior in which a rights setting on a sub-object or group member prevails over the corresponding rights setting on an object or a group, respectively. ruler A visual reference for positioning and resizing fields, graphs, lines, boxes, and bitmaps.

running total A total that is displayed generally on a record by record basis. It totals all records (in the report, in the group, and so on) up to and including the current record. sample datasource table data Data that is used in a constraint check to compare the data that you expect to extract from the sources to the data that Data Federator extracts from the sources. sample target table data Data that is used in a constraint check to compare the expected results to the actual results. schedule To indicate the time and options according to which an object will be run on the server. Scheduling The indexing of an Information Space on a recurring basis. The administrator can choose how often Scheduling occurs via the Admin tab such as on a daily basis. scope of rights The ability to define whether a right applies to objects, sub-objects, or both. score The relevance of an object that is dependent upon search input. For example: you have searched for 'wine sales', the search display the results according to the relevance score. A score of 5 would indicate the object has a strong match to 'wine sales', where a score of 1 indicates a weak match. search engine Software used to search for information and websites found on the internet, for example, Google and AltaVista. search phrase A phrase composed of keywords used for searching. Search Results A tab that displays the results of a search performed within the Home tab. You can use facets and perform further keyword searches to retrieve the most relevant asset or Information Space.

Search Server A server that is part of the Polestar framework, handles search queries. section A part of the report design environment. Securely Modify Rights right A right that allows a delegated administrator to grant to other principals only those rights that the delegated administrator has. selected facet A Category facet that is available to you during navigation. It corresponds to the objects used within your Information Space. They are displayed when you click a value within a Suggested facet. selection formula A formula that specifies the records, or groups of records, you want included in your report. server document A file that stores the original OLE object. server intelligence The ability of the BusinessObjects Enterprise Platform to actively monitor the state of services that are hosted by its server. server-side processing A feature that allows you to set up reports that perform the majority of their processing on the server. These reports push only relevant details to your computer, thus saving you time and memory. slice A two-dimensional view of a multi-dimensional cube. For example, if your data cube contains the three dimensions Product, Market, and Year, and you want to analyze how your products performed in all markets in the year 2006, you would select only 2006 data from the Year dimension. The selected data would then be a two-dimensional slice. snap property A "magnetic" property that attracts nearby objects. sort direction The way records or groups are organized in your report.

sort field A data field on which the sort procedure is based. sort-and-group-by field A field that triggers the printing of a subtotal (or a group field value) whenever its own value changes. sorting A method of organizing the order in which data appears on your report. source analytic The previous object in a storyline with respect to the current object being viewed or added to the storyline. source document A file or object in a publication that contains dynamic or static content; often refers to Crystal reports, Desktop Intelligence documents, or Web Intelligence documents. SQL pass-through The ability to get the SQL Server to process the data retrieval criteria in order to pass the smallest possible result set back to Crystal Reports for final processing. When processing can be passed-through to the server, it makes the reporting process more efficient and it minimizes network traffic. standard deviation A statistical test of how various values in a set of values deviate from the mean or average value for that set. static OLE object A picture of an object that is stored in a document when it is saved. The picture can be displayed or printed by a user who does not have the application in which the original object was created. The object cannot be edited in place, however, without first converting it to an editable type of object. this type of object offer better online and print performance than do standard bitmaps. stored procedure A compiled SQL program, consisting of one or more SQL statements, which resides and runs on your SQL server. storyline

A set of objects that have been arranged in a certain order to enable guided analysis. string A series of connected characters (letters, numbers, symbols, spaces) stored and used as text. subscribe To add oneself as a recipient to a publication. substring A part of a larger string. suggested facet A Category facet that is available to you for navigation. It corresponds to the objects used within your Information Space. They contain values that you have not selected but possibly are what you are looking for. summary The value generated as the result of an evaluation, a tally, or a calculation performed on data from a single group. syntax A set of rules used to make a correct formula. tab A navigational pane that contains an individual Polestar subject matter (such as Administration, Search Results). They are used with other tabs and you can switch between them via a mouse click. Only one tab can be active at a time. target analytic The next object in a storyline with respect to the current object being viewed or added to the storyline. template A copy of a report used as the starting point for creating a new report, or a report whose formatting is applied to a new report created in the Standard Report Creation Wizard. text object A specialized object that can contain text, database fields, and formula fields. A statistical test that can be used to evaluate the variability in a group of values (for example, the amount bid by each of the bidders on a construction project). verify To let a report understand the changes made to the database structure (fields and tables, NOT records). viewer An application that lets you view report and document objects in InfoView; HTML-based viewers do not need to be installed on the user's computer, but ActiveX and Java viewers do. viewing rights The level of security that determines what a you can view or cannot view within the application. For example, viewing certain assets or Spaces. visual total A Voyager calculation that aggregates the data displayed in the crosstab, regardless of hierarchy, and displays the calculation result in a new row or column in the crosstab. visualization The method of representing raw data so certain patterns are noticeable. Long form: BusinessObjects Web Intelligence web server A machine or application that serves web pages over the Internet or intranet. A web server hosts pages, scripts, programs, and multimedia files and then serves them using HTTP, which sends files to a client web browser. Welcome page A tab that allows users to perform a search within Polestar. This tab is the entry point to Polestar. wildcard A character that represents any character (?) or any group of characters (*) in a search string. word wrap A word processor-type property of a text object that automatically moves a word to the following line when the word is too long to fit the remaining space on the current line.
