Frame. Snapshot. A wind of change and a wave of originality
that carry away, but they don’t necessarily mean breaking with
the past and tradition. This new delivery of your flight magazine
responds to this surrounding modernism which has an positive
influence on Madagascar.
In the light of subjects as varied as exciting, it points up
Antananarivo first. The City of a thousand changes which jealously
keeps its rich past story nonetheless. Antananarivo, the jewel of
the Great Island, holds a place of honor. Mirror of the development
of Madagascar and also guardian of traditions, Antananarivo is
facing a transition between the past, present and future. History,
architecture, exceptional places are depicted in detail in the pages
that sounds like the (re) exploration of these hidden treasures.
This issue also gives pride to the beautiful landscapes of
Madagascar. This, to end a year made up of continuous challenges
on a high note. 2014 could not be concluded without a spotlight on
the romantic and fairy city par excellence: Paris.
Your airline has always emphasized constant and concerned
about the future development. As the saying goes and stated
so well, "we don’t leave our ancestors’ land, we borrow it to our
children." So, it is rightful that the lemurs Festival which took place
in Madagascar, is particularly emphasized. These symbols of the

sible journey, here are some well-being tips to follow in
order to maximize your comfort on board :
• Choose natural drinks, the water we recommend that
you drink in abundance and fruit juice. Don’t forget that
alcohol is harmful for one’s health. It also has a dehydra-
ting effect, so avoid drinking it or only sparingly.
• To ease the pressure on the ears, you can chew gum.
Otherwise, pinch your nose and gently exhale.
• Without moving from your seat, repeat the following
exercise regularly to relax your body :

excursions and discoveries. On the economic
front, Ehoala was a key subject of discussion.
The Southeastern Malagasy big port aims to
become a hub that will have access to the traffic
in the Indian Ocean, along the African East
Coast and in the Africa-Asia axis. The féria was
an opportunity to expose those conveniences.
Tourism was also on the agenda for thematic
exchanges. Air Madagascar has been a major
partner for the realization of this féria. ■
A road show in Japan, initiated by Air Madagascar, was jointly realized with the
National Tourism Office in Madagascar (ONTM), Madagascar Airtours (MAT) and the
Malagasy Embassy in Japan, from October 21 to 24, in Osaka, Fukuoka and Tokyo.
Those seminars allowed promoting the destination of Madagascar and the airline
company to 98 professionals principally representing travel agencies, abroad Japanese
cooperation agencies, tour operators, and tour operator groupings. Japanese people
are fond of trips. The country's tourists represent an important Asian and worldwide
market share. The Land of the Rising Sun therefore makes a tremendous market.
In 2015, Air Madagascar plans to get to the next level and thus to contribute to multiply

Mechanics in aviation is similar to the clock
mechanical, working in a range of precision parts
that must fit together perfectly to ensure proper
operation of the device. Zoulder Jon Tovomanantsoa is one of those
groups of mechanics ensuring the smooth running - or rather the
right flight of an airplane. He is a mechanic at Air Madagascar.
It began in 2005 when he applied for a competition to become an
apprentice aircraft mechanic. "My profile matched the required
criteria. I was rather well up in mathematics and physics. I seized
the opportunity, "he remembers. The challenge was taken up
and brilliantly. He has benefited from training in Addis Abeba, the
Ethiopian capital, for two years to acquire all the necessary skills to
become such an aircraft mechanic.
Back to Madagascar, he joined the national airline in 2008, where he
worked on two separate areas : the tarmac and the hangar.
At the hangar, maintenance, repairs, revisions or modifications are
executed in accordance with the updated aviation legislation. The

aircraft engines, wings and landing gear replacement …all tasks
requiring more than eight hours work are carried out at the hangar.
On the tarmac, the mechanics are stepping up so that each airplane
can take off safely, by executing some scheduled checks or fixing any
faults, if necessary.
Today, the aircraft maintenance, through landing gear repairs to all
technical checks, has no secret to this mechanic. As Jon works on both
grounds, he has to face a double challenge. "Performing my mission
according to the standards makes me feel greatly satisfied" , he says
proudly. "You may think that as time goes this is due to the habit, but
I'm always happy when I see a plane taking off. I tell myself that I did
something then" , he concludes with a broad smile. ■

parties de cette ville. Analamanga a été
le premier nom donné à la cité qui se
limitait exclusivement au sommet d’une
colline au cœur de l’Imerina. Durant le règne d’Andrianjaka,
cinquième roi de la dynastie des Hova, le hameau prit le nom

d’Antananarivo, la Ville des Mille. Au fil d’une lente descente,
la découverte se mue en voyage initiatique.

Origines
Andrianjaka en a fait la capitale de son royaume après
avoir chassé les Vazimba, les autochtones de l’Imerina.
Commençons alors la visite par la Haute-ville, le cœur

de la cité et toise superbement le reste d’Antananarivo. Les
rues et les ruelles serpentent cette colline sacrée offrant un
charme loin d’être désuet.
Les pas des mille guerriers envoyés par Andrianjaka - pour
fortifier et rendre imprenable la colline - ont laissé la place
aux rires des enfants et à l’ambiance studieuse des lieux. Ce,
à travers les collèges, les lycées et les instituts supérieurs.
Là où niche en son sein le Rova de Manjakamiadana, cette
partie de la ville doit son nom à son emplacement qui se situe
à plus de 1400 m d’altitude, surplombant sur 200 m la plaine
environnante. Auparavant protégée par sept portes fermées
par des disques de pierre, la Haute-Ville est un monument
historique qui distingue Antananarivo.

Lumières divines
Les traces du passé sont persistantes à l’image de la porte
d’Ambavahadimitafo, du Palais de la Reine, de celui du
Premier Ministre à Andafiavaratra ou encore des temples,
stèles édifiées pour marquer l’entrée du christianisme
dans le pays. La haute ville d’Antananarivo doit son charme
particulier à ses maisons en mur de briquettes rouge ocre et
leurs toits en tuiles. Des éléments qui rappellent le passé et
les campagnes des Hautes-terres centrales, surtout à travers
le reflet de lumières quasi divines.
Pas le temps de terminer un en-cas, et déjà une envie folle de
flâner dans les ruelles en pavés s’impose tout naturellement.
En dévalant Andohalo puis Ambatovinaky, la ville moyenne
dite Faritra Antenantenany ou Tanàna Eva se dessine.
L’architecture particulière rappelle le passé colonial de l’île.

Saut dans la modernité

Une visite d’Antananarivo s’apprécie comme une musique ternaire : la ville haute, la ville
intermédiaire, puis la ville basse, accompagnée des quartiers périphériques.
Un tempo à trois temps pour vivre et apprécier une cité qui n’a pas fini de dévoiler ses
charmes et ses mystères.

C’est en descendant plus bas qu’apparaît le gros de
l’Antananarivo actuelle. Une ville moderne et animée. La ville
basse est constituée d’Analakely et ses environs tels que les
quartiers de Mahamasina, Anosy, Isotry, Tsaralàlana, Behoririka
et d’autres myriades de bourgades périphériques englouties
par l’avancée inexorable de la cité qui ne cesse de s’étendre
et, avec elle, le génie constructeur des architectes rivalisant
d’imagination. Les immeubles flamboyants prennent place aux
côtés de petites cases, témoin du passage de plain-pied dans
le troisième millénaire. Ce qui permet à Antananarivo de
demeurer une conurbation à taille humaine. 17

A visit of Antananarivo can be enjoyed just like a ternary music : the upper town, the intermediate town, then
the lower town, accompanied by peripheral districts. A tempo with three-quarter time to live and appreciate a
city that is still revealing its charms and its mysteries.
Paradoxical city, skyscrapers city, Antananarivo distinguishes itself
by its rich history. Conquests and revolutions are almost all parts
of this city. Analamanga was the first name given to the city that
was exclusively limited to the top of a hill at the heart of the Ime-
rina. During the reign of Adrianjaka, fifth king of the Hova dynasty,
the hamlet took the name of Antananarivo, the City of Thousands.
During the course of a slow descent, the discovery turns into a
journey of initiation.
Origins
Andrianjaka made it the capital of his kingdom after overthrowing
the Vazimba, the Aboriginal people of Imerina. Let’s begin with
the visit of the Upper town, the historic heart of the capital. This
area takes us back to the origins of the city and superbly weighs
the rest of Antananarivo up. Its streets and its alleyways meander
up and over the sacred hill, offering a charm that is far from being
obsolete.
The footsteps of a thousand warriors sent by Andrianjaka – to
strengthen and to make the hills impregnable – were replaced
by the laughter of children and by the studious atmosphere of
the places. Being the spot where the Rova of Manjakamiadana is
located, this part of the city owes its name to its location that is
situated at more than 1400 m of altitude, overlooking the surroun-
ding plain over 200 m. Previously protected by the seven doors
closed by stone discs, the Upper town is a historical monument
that distinguishes Antananarivo.
Divine lights
The traces of the past are persistent as with the Ambavahadimita-
fo door, the Queen’s Palace, the Prime Minister’s one in Andafia-
varatra or even the temples, headstones established to mark the
entry of Christianity in the country. Antananarivo’s upper town
owes its particular charm to its red ochre briquette wall made
houses and their tiled roofs. Elements that remind of the past and
of the countryside of the Central Highlands especially through the
near-divine lights’ reflection.
No time to finish a snack and a mad desire to stroll through the
paved alleys already imposes itself quite naturally. Spinning down
Andohalo then Ambatovinaky, the medium size town called
Faritra Antenantenany or Tanàna Eva is being drawn up. The par-
ticular architecture reminds of the colonial past of the island.

A jump into modernity
It is by going down further that the present-day Antananarivo’s
big picture appears. It is a modern and vibrant city. The lower
town consists of Analakely and its surroundings like the neighbo-
rhoods of Mahamasina, Anosy, Isotry, Tsaralàlana, Behoririka and
other myriads of peripheral towns swallowed up in the inexorable
progress of the city that doesn’t cease to extend and, with it, the
architects’ genius for constructing that show great imagination.
The flamboyant buildings take place beside small huts, witnesses
of the passageway in the third millennium. It allows Antananarivo
to stay a human scale conurbation.
A particular alchemy is apparent among the people of Antana-
narivo. Convergence of the 18 ethnicities that form the Malagasy
people, the city offers the best condensed. The cohabitation of
such a big diversity makes the wealth of the multicultural city, a
city that can import foreign modern habits without losing its iden-
tity. Antananarivo is endowed with both several natural areas and
business and worker locations. A mix of modernity and tradition,
Antananarivo must be prerequisite for anyone who wishes to
truly learn about the Malagasy lifestyle in Madagascar. This

Antananarivo is, above all, a metropolis.
It reflects the country’s various aspects
in all its activities. It is a concentrate of
Madagascar, where everything happens.
It terms of culture, Antananarivo occupies
a prominent place, and a good example
is the kings, revolutions and persecution

On the cultural side, the Ambohimanga’s

bird park, Angavokely’s ranger station
where we can see a wide variety of
orchids, Ambohitantely’s park that is really
interesting if we can meet the lemurs, etc.
Mantasoa gathers all related to nautical
activities. We must not miss handicrafts
and shopping. It is truly the place to have
a concentrate of gastronomy, Chinese

d’art. L'influence de la BD et du
cinéma d'animation se ressent
globalement sur son travail,
même s’il refuse d’être cantonné
dans ce registre.

une matière qui n’est composée
théoriquement que de chiffres
et de logarithmes ? L’artiste
apporte quelques éléments de
réponse. « A l’image du sculpteur,
je m’inspire des éléments vivants
pour composer mes œuvres.
Ensuite, je laisse parler mon
imagination à travers le stylet
et le logiciel, soit ZBrush soit
Cinéma 4D. Les différentes
étapes de la modélisation
insufflent une vie aux œuvres ».
Pour le sculpteur sur pierre,
les outils de percussions, de
façonnage et d’abrasion sont les
meilleurs amis ; pour le sculpteur
virtuel, il s’agira plutôt du stylet,
de l’écran et du logiciel adapté,
et bien sûr, d’une bonne dose
d’imagination. « Il est vrai que
la sensation n’est pas semblable,
mais avec les évolutions
technologiques actuelles, l’on
se rapproche plus des ressentis
concrets », partage Ridha
Andriantomanga.
Si le terreau est fertile, il n’en
demeure pas moins que les
espaces d’exposition restent
assez limités, comme le déplore
notre interlocuteur. « Comme
dans presque tous les domaines,
la question sur les débouchés
demeure problématique. J’ai
déjà eu en esprit de monter
une exposition virtuelle, mais
la réalisation est assez difficile.
Il faut donc un appui assez
conséquent pour propulser cet
art ». Un cri du cœur et un appel
de l’esprit à qui veut l’entendre
pour concrétiser une vision...

elements to create my works. Then I let my imagination express

For the stone carver, the tools of percussions, shaping and
abrasion are the best friends; for the virtual sculptor, it will rather
be the stylus, the screen and the appropriate software, and of
course, a good amount of imagination. "It is true that the feeling
is not similar, but with current technological developments, we
come closer to real feelings," says Ridha Andriantomanga. If the
soil is fertile, the fact remains that the exhibition spaces are quite
limited, as our interlocutor deplores. "As in almost all domains,

transmission du savoir me tient à cœur.
J’ai dispensé des formations en faveur de
femmes couturières dans la partie Nord
de l’île », affirme notre interlocutrice.
Selon elle, le talent est indéniable et
inné chez les artisans malgaches, mais
il faut un soupçon de culture marketing.
« J’ai été, en quelque sorte, la passerelle
entre le savoir-faire ancestral et la
notion de marché  », explique-t-elle.
Sur l’île, elle lancera sa propre griffe,
« Lolo malagasy», tout en incrustant une

talentueux, elles se transforment en
sacs à main tendance, en polo « trendy »
ou en pochette intemporelles. C’est
le système D de Mia. D comme dada.
Pour cette designer, les matières et le
graphisme sont un dada. Il faut dire
qu’elle est tombée dedans dès son
enfance. Petite-fille et fille d’antiquaire-
décoratrice, elle a toujours été attirée
les dessins et les belles couleurs.
Histoire d’amour
Mia et Madagascar, c’est une longue
histoire d’amour. Un coup de foudre
qui date de quatorze ans déjà. « Avant
de partir m’installer aux Etats-Unis,
j’avais décidé de passer quelques jours
de vacances au soleil. J’avais eu le choix
entre Nosy Be et Sainte-Marie. J’ai
immédiatement jeté mon dévolu sur

Love story
Mia and Madagascar, it is a long love

Nosy Be and Sainte-Marie. I immediately
set my heart on Sainte –Marie "recalls
the designer. A choice that has borne
fruit. She decides not to pursue any more
her American dream but to lay out her
Malagasy route.
Hortense Bourbon will settle down on l’Ile
Jardin. She will begin training women in
handicraft and sewing through CETAMADA
association. "Transmission of knowledge
is close to my heart. I provided trainings
for seamstresses in the northern part
of the island, "says our interlocutor.
According to her, talent is certain and
innate in Malagasy artisans, but a touch
of marketing culture is needed. "I was,
somehow, the link between the ancestral
know-how and market concept," she
explains. On the island, she will launch her
own label, "Lolo Malagasy ", while settling
a shop in the heart of the Princesse Bora
Lodge.
Recovery

broad smile. A shop will be established in
harmony with the launch of the café de la
gare. Very quickly, Ivahoana will become a
sound box of a new style.
Implementing the model

between the ancestral know-how and the

regardent et se défient. Le reflet de l’un
se traduit sur l’autre. Ces bâtiments sont
les miroirs des évolutions architecturales qui happent la
capitale malgache dans un tourbillon positif et créatif.

La puissance urbaine d’Antananarivo s’exprime à travers
de nouveaux quartiers en pleine expansion, ce qui lui
confère un cachet résolument moderne. « L’immobilier –
la pierre – a toujours été une valeur sûre dans tous pays.
Aujourd’hui, la conjoncture économique et politique fait
que les acteurs immobiliers se lancent dans de nombreux
projets immobiliers », glisse Larissa Ratsiraka, General
Manager de World Trade Center (WTC) à Antananarivo,
un des leaders mondiaux de la mise en place de centres
d'affaires internationaux. A l’image de cette franchise
qui ambitionne de s’implanter durablement au pays.
« World Trade Center Tana a pour objectif à terme d’avoir,
à l’instar des 300 centres sur les cinq continents, son
activité dans un complexe d’envergure international. Il
envisage de préempter un centre d’affaires prestigieux
avec des bureaux, des centres de congrès et d’échanges

soutient-elle.

Champs-Élysées, richement illuminés,
attireront cette année encore près de 15
millions de visiteurs qui se presseront
autour des animations, manèges et

de l’Étoile, trône l’Arc de triomphe. Sa
construction voulue par Napoléon Ier date

Flamme ravivée
Dessous, la flamme sur la tombe du
Soldat inconnu, est ravivée chaque soir
à 18 h 30. Au sommet du monument,
la vue panoramique de Paris, de jour
comme de nuit, est magnifique. Un
musée situé dans l’édifice, complète la
visite. En bas de l’avenue, sur la place
de la Concorde, on ne manquera pas la

LA PYRAMIDE DU LOUVRE

Magic and big shows
Let us return to the banks, classified as a
World Heritage site by Unesco, along the
splashing sounds of the river to join the
heart of the City on the eponymous island,
dominated by the majestic Notre-Dame
de Paris cathedral. A masterpiece of gothic
architecture, it is the most visited monument
of France. Located in the historical heart of
Paris, at the end of the island of the City, its
construction begins in the Middle Age, and
has been restored on many occasions. We
will admire from the outside of the tower the
arrow and the gargoyles, and on the inside of
the stained-glass windows the rosettes and
the Treasure of Notre-Dame.
Another religious edifice to discover in the
capital, the Sacred Heart basilica, located at
the top of the Montmartre Hill in the north
of the city. In the interior is found on the roof
the biggest mosaic of France, measuring
480 m². A few steps away we will laze around
on the Place du Tertre, and by steep streets we
will attain, at the foot of the hill, the famous
cabaret the Moulin Rouge not far from the
famous Pigalle neighborhood. And if you
have kids, a train trip (the RER A) will with no
doubt lead you to Disneyland.
In here, the magic and the big shows that
delight a public of all ages culminate.
Disneyland Paris offers this year once again
its Christmas Parade. The show is leaded by
Santa Claus aboard his sled, surrounded
by numerous toys and a whole new Sugary
Delights charioteer. We will not forget
either the new princesses of the movie The
Snow Queen, as well as the new attraction
Ratatouille. In the kingdom of Mickey,
Christmas is prolonged until January 7th
2015. In Paris, it is all year round that magic

Cette année, l’île paradisiaque de Nosy Be a été le point focal du tourisme malgache. La Journée Mondiale
du Tourisme (JMT) - qui est célébrée tous les 27 septembre – s’y est déroulée.

principal de la Journée Mondiale du Tourisme (JMT). Le choix
de Nosy Be n’est pas fortuit. L’Ile aux Parfums est actuel-
lement dans une phase de relance durable de son secteur
touristique.
Ainsi, dans le cadre de la célébration de la JMT, de nom-
breuses manifestations ont eu lieu à Nosy Be. L’évènement,
dont l’aura a dépassé les frontières nationales, a été une
occasion de mettre en avant les rôles de la population locale
dans l’exploitation rationnelle des potentialités touristiques.
Le tourisme est indéniablement un moyen d’impulser un
développement tangible. L’Office Régional du Tourisme de
Nosy Be (ORTNB), les opérateurs touristiques, économiques
et la population locale se sont donné la main pour la réussite
de cette édition de la JMT.
Plusieurs invités de marque ont répondu à l’appel, pendant les
trois jours de festivité. A l’image des ambassadeurs de la JMT :
Alain Bernard, le double champion olympique en natation et
sa compagne Sophie Ducasse (connue sous le nom de Tiga),
présentatrice de télévision et mannequin. Des journalistes
de la presse locale, régionale et internationale ont assuré la
visibilité et le rayonnement de l’évènement qui a rencontré un

The Island of perfumes is currently in a stage of a durable revival
of its tourism sector.
So, as part of the celebration of the WDT, many events were held
in Nosy Be. The event, the influence of which has gone beyond
the national borders, was an opportunity to highlight the local
population role in the rational exploitation of tourism potential.
Tourism is definitely a way to launch a concrete development.
Regional Tourism Office of Nosy Be (ORTNB), tourism and econo-
mic operators and local population have worked together for the
success of this WTD edition.
Several VIP guests have responded to the call for three days of ce-
lebration. As ambassadors of the WTD: Alain Bernard, the double
olympic swimming champion and his girlfriend Sophie Ducasse
(known as Tiga), a TV presenter and model. Journalists from the
local, regional and international press have ensured the visibility
and influence of the event which was a great success. ■

baptêmes de l'air. Insolite Travel Fly, une agence implantée
sur l’île, propose des survols en hélicoptère (Alouette II) de
l'île de Nosy Be pour des baptêmes de l'air, des vols touris-
tiques, etc. L’agence propose des circuits en hélicoptère, ce qui
donne immédiatement une idée de la beauté et des richesses
qu'offre l'ile. Les excursions aériennes sont aussi un régal pour
les scientifiques et les photographes amateurs du cliché idéal.
Un vol dure au minimum 15 minutes, mais selon les envies, le
temps de vol peut être prolongé. Les tarifs affichés varient en
fonction des itinéraires et il est possible de dresser soi-même
son circuit de visite. ■

confier cette tâche a mis en route un programme
original. Elle a commencé par sensibiliser « les
petits soldats de la propreté » des établissements
scolaires du Nord de l'île Sainte-Marie (Ambodiata-
fana, Ambatorao, Ifotatra, Agnivorano, Zazakely).
Tri des déchets, traitement et recyclage ont été les
maîtres mots de la première approche de ce projet
environnemental. Enfants et jeunes, qu'ils soient de
Sainte-Marie ou d'ailleurs, doivent être sensibles à
cette image de propreté. C’est un des messages qu’ont
voulu transmettre les membres de CétaMada. Ainsi,
les jeunes ont été responsabilisés et conscientisés à
travers de mini-conférences, de la mise en situa-
tion par des jeux, des dialogues et de la diffusion de
petits films d'animation.

Programme de recyclage
Après cette phase de sensibilisation, il a fallu passer
aux actions concrètes à travers la distribution et
l'installation de deux « poubelles écologiques » dans

jamais été autant mis en avant alors même que la dégradation de leur écosystème compromet dangereusement
leur existence. Un festival leur a été consacré pour sensibiliser la population et pour sauvegarder ces biens
mondiaux.

Les lémuriens sont les animaux
emblématiques de la Grande île, les
symboles d’une île – continent qui
a su garder une faune et une flore
préhistoriques. La famille comporte
36 espèces dont la grande majorité
ne se trouve que sur l'Ile Rouge. Les
premiers lémuriens sont arrivés sur la
Grande île sur des troncs flottants, à
la suite de catastrophes naturelles. De
véritables arches de Noé qui permirent
à une espèce d’atteindre une île bénie et
de s’y développer en toute quiétude.
Les lémuriens vécurent en paix jusqu'à
l'arrivée de l'homme. « Ces animaux
représentent une véritable richesse

Ainsi, pour sensibiliser le reste du
monde au sort de ces primates, la
Grande île a tout naturellement accueilli
le Festival mondial des lémuriens,
une première. Sous la bannière « Les
lémuriens : patrimoine national, amis et
non pas… », huit jours ont été consacrés
à la mobilisation, à des débats et à
différents évènements. « Le thème choisi
par le comité d’organisation reflète
l’objectif principal du festival, c’est-
à-dire sensibiliser la population sur
la valeur de ces animaux», soutient le
Secrétaire général du GERP.
Le festival a permis d’attirer l’attention
du grand public sur l’appropriation
pérenne du réflexe environnemental
et du respect de la biodiversité. « Ce
sera aussi l’occasion d’impliquer la
population - autant la jeunesse malgache
que les autorités - sur la préservation
et la valorisation de l’héritage de la
biodiversité. Ce, à travers l’amélioration
de l’environnement économique
des communautés vivant autour de
l’habitat des lémuriens », glisse notre

Un plan de conservation
La Grande île ne représente que
0,4% de la planète et 2% de l’Afrique.
Néanmoins, 20% des primates
n’existent qu’à Madagascar et sont
répartis en 105 espèces. Parmi les
25 espèces de primates menacées
d’extinction, cinq sont des lémuriens.
Ces chiffres éloquents rappellent le
chemin à parcourir pour sauvegarder
ces emblèmes du pays. A ce jour, il ne
reste plus que moins de 10% de la forêt
originelle : entre 50 000 et 60 000 km². Si
la déforestation continue à cette vitesse,
d’ici 25 ans les lémuriens seraient
amenés à disparaitre. Plus de 90% des

lémuriens, en sachant que ce sont ces
personnes qui sont les moins informées
de l’importance des lémuriens au niveau
mondial. ■

Lemurs are the emblematic animals of
the Great Island, the symbols of an island

prehistoric fauna and flora. The family is
composed of 36 species whose great majo-
rity can be found in the Red Island only. The
first lemurs arrived in the Great Island on

"Lemurs: national heritage, friends and

mobilization, debates and various events.
"The theme chosen by the organizing com-
mittee reflects the main objective of the
festival which consists in raising people’s
consciousness about the value of these ani-
mals," says the Secretary General of GERP.

of the general public about the permanent

and respect of biodiversity. "It is also an
opportunity to involve people – as much
the Malagasy youth as the authorities – in
the preservation and the enhancement of
the biodiversity’s heritage. This, through
the improvement of the economic environ-
ment of the communities living around the
lemurs’ habitat, "says our interlocutor.
A conservation plan
The Great Island is only 0.4% of the planet
and 2% of Africa. However, 20% of pri-
mates exist only in Madagascar and they
are divided up in 105 species. Among the
