1. (a) State the application of Varignon’s theorem.


(b) A rigid bar is subjected to a system of parallel forces as shown in figure 1b.
Reduce this system to

2. (a) What is the principle on which a screw jack works?


(b) What is the relationship between coefficient of friction and angle of friction?
(c) A wooden block rests on a horizontal plane. Determine the force required to
pull it. Assume the mass m of the block to be 5 kg and the µ =0.4
(d) A block resting on a rough horizontal surface required a pull of 190 N inclined
at 30o to the surface just to move it. It was found that a push of 230 N inclined
at 30o to the surface just moved the block. Determine the weight of the block
and the coefficient of friction. [2+2+4+8]

3. (a) A shaft rotating at 200 r.p.m. drives another shaft at 300 r.p.m. and transmits
6 kW through a belt. The belt is 100 mm wide and 10 mm thick. The distance
between the shafts is 4 m. The smaller pulley is 0.5 m in diameter. Calculate
the stress in the belt, if its is
i. an open belt drive, and
ii. a cross belt drive. Take µ= 0.3.
(b) Explain the phenomena of ‘slip’ and ‘creep’ in a belt drive. [12+4]

4. (a) Derive from first principles expressions for mass moment of inertia of a thin
right angled triangular plate of base B height H and thickness T about the
three centroidal axes.
(b) Where do we use principal moments of inertia? [12+4]

5. Determine the mass moment of inertia of a slender rod of length L and a mass m
with respect to an axis perpendicular to the rod and passing through one end of
the rod. [16]

6. A bus starts from rest at point A and accelerates at the rate of 0.9 m/s2 until it
reaches a speed of 7.2 m/s. It then proceeds with the same speed until the brakes
are applied. It comes to rest, at point B, 18 m beyond the point where the brakes
are applied. Assuming uniform acceleration, determine the time required for the
bus travel from A to B. Distance AB = 90 m. [16]

7. The motion of a disk rotating in an oil bath is defined by the relation θ = θ0 (1−e−t/3 )
where θ is expressed in radians and t in seconds. Knowing that θ0 = 1.2 rad,
determine the angular coordinate, velocity and acceleration of the disk when (a) t
= 0 (b)t = 3s (c) t =∞. [16]

8. A shaft 1.5 m long supported in flexible bearings at the ends carries two wheels
each of 50 kg mass. One wheel is situated at the centre of the shaft and the other at
a distance of 375 mm from the centre towards left. The shaft is hollow of external
diameter 75 mm and the internal diameter 40 mm. The density of shaft material is
7700 kg/m3 and its modulus of elasticity is 200 GN/m2 . Find the lowest whirling
speed of the shaft, taking into account the mass of the shaft. [16]

1. (a) Distinguish between resultant and equilibrant?


(b) Four forces of magnitude 15 kN, 25 kN, 40 kN and 60 kN are acting at a point
O as shown in the figure 1b. The angles made by the above forces with X axis
are 30,60,90 and 120 degrees respectively. Find the magnitude and direction
of the resultant force. [4+12]

2. (a) State laws of friction?
(b) The following are the specifications for a differential screw jack.
i. Pitch of smaller screw, 5.0 mm
ii. Pitch of larger screw, 10.0 mm
iii. Lever arm length from centre of screw= 500mm.
The screw jack raises a load of 15 kN with an effort of 185N. Determine the
efficiency of the differential screw jack at this load. If the above the jack can
raise a load of 40 kN with an effort of 585 N, Determine the efficiency of
machine. [4+12]

3. (a) A casting weighing 5 kN hangs freely from a rope which makes 1.5 turns round
a drum of 150 mm diameter revolving at 10 r.p.m. The other end of the rope
is pulled by a man. The coefficient of friction is 0.15. Determine
i. The force required by the man, and
ii. The power to raise the casting.

(b) How does the velocity ratio of a belt drive effect, when some slip is taking
place between the belt and the two pulleys? [10+6]

4. (a) Determine the centroid of the dam section in figure 4a.

5. Calculate the mass moment of inertia of the frustum of the cone shown in figure
5. With respect to the axis Z-Z and A-B. Assume the density of the cone as 2500
kg/m3 . [16]

6. A car enters a curved road of radius 200 m traveling at a constant speed of 36
km/hr. Determine the x and y components of the velocity and acceleration of the
car, 16 secs after it has entered the curved portion of the road. [16]

7. A 100 kg block rests on a horizontal plane. Find the magnitude of the force P
required to give the block an acceleration of 2.5 m/sec2 to the right. The coefficient
of kinetic friction between the block and the plane is µk = 0.25. [16]

8. A shaft of 100 mm diameter and 1 metre long has one of its end fixed and the other
end carries a disc of mass 500 kg at a radius of gyration of 450 mm. The modulus
of rigidity for the shaft material is 80 GN/m2 . Determine the frequency of torsional
vibrations. [16]

1. (a) A body is subjected to the three forces as shown in the figure 1a. If possible de-
termine the direction of the force F so that the resultant is in X direction, when

(b) Differentiate between scalar and vector quantities?
(c) Define coplanar non-concurrent forces with suitable sketch. [8+4+4]

2. (a) A screw jack has a pitch of 6 mm, and major diameter 30 mm. A lever 600
mm long is used to raise a load of 20 kN. If the coefficient of friction is 0.15,
Calculate the force required to be applied at the end of the lever
i. to raise the load
ii. to lower the load. Also calculate the efficiency of the jack.
(b) A vertical wall weighs 500 N. It is subjected to a lateral force of 3 kN. Will it
be safe against sliding on a horizontal plane on which µ=0.01. [12+4]

3. (a) Discuss merits and demerits open belt drive for transmission of power.
(b) A belt drive consists of two V-belts in parallel, on grooved pulleys of the same
size. The angle of the groove is 30o . The cross-sectional area of each belt is
750 mm2 and µ = 0.12. The density of the belt material is 1.2 mg/m3 and
the maximum safe stress in the material is 3 MPa. Calculate the power that
can be transmitted between pulleys 300 mm diameter rotating at 1500 r.p.m.
Find also the shaft speed is r.p.m. at which the power transmitted would be
a maximum. [4+12]

4. (a) Determine the product of inertia of a right angle triangle
i. with respect to x and y axes.
ii. with respect to x’ and y’ axes (x’ and y’ axes are passing through centroid
and parallel to x and y axes).
(b) State parallel axis theorem as applied to moment of inertia of plane areas.

5. Derive the mass moment of inertia of cylinder about centroidal x-axisaxis.. [16]

6. The position of a particle of a particle which moves along a straight line is defined by
the relation x = t3 - 6t2 - 15t + 40 where x expressed in m and t in sec. Determine

(a) the time at which the velocity is zero,


(b) the position and distance traveled by the particle at that time,
(c) the acceleration of the particle at that time,
(d) the distance traveled by the particle from t = 4 to t = 6sec. [16]

7. A flywheel starts from rest and uniformly accelerated to a speed of 750 rpm in 5
sec and then for 6 sec further accelerated with a different acceleration. During the
two periods find the total angle covered by the flywheel before attaining 1500 rpm.
[16]

8. A shaft of length 0.75 m, supported freely at the ends, is carrying a body of mass
90 kg at 0.25 m from one end. Find the natural frequency of transverse vibration.
Assume E = 200 GN/m2 and shaft diameter = 50 mm. [16]

1. (a) How will you resolve a given force into a force and a couple?
(b) Three forces of magnitude 200 N, 500 N and 400 N are acting at the origin
O(0,0,0) and are directed from the points A(2,1,6), B(4,-2,-5) and C(-6,-4,-4)
respectively to the origin. Determine the magnitude of the resultant. [4+12]

2. (a) The pitch of a single threaded screw jack is 8 mm and its mean diameter is
70mm. If the coefficient of friction is 0.2, find the force required at the end of
a lever 300 mm long
i. to raise a load 60 kN.
ii. to lower the same load.
Find the torque applied in each case.
(b) The force required to pull a body of weight 50 N on a rough horizontal plane
is 15 N. Determine the coefficient of friction. [12+4]

3. (a) A flat belt rolls over a pulley of a diameter D making contact angle θ when the
respective tensions are T1 and T2 . Derive a relationship between the tensions,
angle of contact and coefficient of friction µ. Show that the diameter of pulley
is immaterial.
(b) What is the ratio of tension in an open belt drive? [12+4]

4. (a) The cross-section of a cast iron beam is shown in the figure 4a. Determine the
moments of inertia about the centroidal axes.

(b) Define First moment of an area. [12+4]

5. Calculate the moment of inertia about the centroidal axes of the cylinder of radius
0.5 m, height 1 m and density 2400 kg/m3 . [16]

6. Derive the equations of motion of a particle with uniform acceleration. [16]
