Historian Michele Shover, July 27

The Butte County Library is proud to announce the fourth event in their Transforming Life After 50 series, scheduled to take place at the Chico Branch Library on Wednesday, July 27 at 2:00 pm. Guest speaker and author Michele Shover will discuss John Bidwell and the Indian Treaty of 1851. Shover will discuss the treaty negotiations that brought hundreds of Mountain Maidus to the Mechoopda Maidu territory that had fallen to John Bidwells control. Bidwell worked closely with the treaty commissioner in a role he omitted from his histories. A full record from correspondence, Army reports, and the memory of Emma Cooper, a key Indian elder on Rancho Chico has made it possible for Dr. Shover to provide the first full account of the drama by Big Chico Creek, and an analysis of John Bidwells efforts to defeat it. The public is invited to learn more about aspects of the local history of Chico that has not been widely discussed or represented before. There will be a brief Question and Answer period following the presentation, which will last approximately one hour. Dr. Shover has been kind enough to present her new scholarly research on behalf of Butte County Librarys Transforming Life After 50 program. Transforming Life After 50 is an enrichment series offered by the Butte County Library based on a grant received by the State Library. One more event scheduled for July and August, focusing on local history and technology, with hopes that the library will garner engaged volunteers over the age of 50 in the branches. The District 4-C1 Lions are hosting the All-Star Football Norcal district-wide fund raiser for charity to send Type 1 diabetic children to Camp McCumber. The cost of Diabetic Camp is $400.00 per child for children within the district and $650.00 for children outside the district. Camp McCumber is seven miles east of Shingletown and twelve miles west of Lassen Volcanic National Park, off Hwy 44. The last week of June each year at camp McCumber children with Type 1 diabetes learn how to manage their condition with the professional supervision of Dr. Logan, physician assistants, and health coaches. Camp McCumber has been in operation for over 30 years. The Lions All-Star Football game will be held at Mitchell Field, Harrison Stadium, Oroville, CA on Saturday, July 30th, 2011. Gates open at 5:30pm. Kick-off is at 7:30pm. Entrance is $10.00 per ticket. All proceeds go to Camp McCumber. Lions Clubs district wide from Wheatland to the Oregon border are supporting the event. Two local students, #53 Bobby Falagai, of Oroville High School (picture above),OT/DT and #51 George Romero from Las Plumas High School, OT/DT, are participating in this event. Movies in the Park Begin August 5

August 5 will be the start of the fifth season of Movies in the Park with an animated movie called Despicable Me. Free movies will be playing every Friday during the month of August in Downtown Oroville. The big outdoor screen will be set up at Bicentennial Park at the corner of Huntoon and Robinson Streets. Preshow activities will begin at 7:15 and the movies will begin between 8pm and 8:30pm. Featured movies and preshow activities are: August 5 Despicable Me with activities by Creative Arts Centre, August 12 Grease with a classic car show by Oro Dam Cruisers with a 50s costume theme and music, August 19 Tangled with Friends Hair Salon, Photography by Tracy and fashions by the downtown kids stores. The last show of the season, August 26 will be Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade with Oroville Ford and demonstrations by the Oroville YMCA for the preshow entertainment. Dont forget the YMCA Snack Shack will be open every week. Free Movies in the Park is a family friendly activity for all ages. Its also a smoke-free and alcohol-free activity. The Butte County Public Health Department is offering parents another opportunity to get their childs Tdap booster shot before school starts next fall. As you may have heard, new California law (AB 354) requires all students entering 7th through 12th grades in the 2011-2012 school year to show proof of immunization with a pertussis vaccine booster called Tdap. Tdap booster vaccine, which protects against diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis whooping cough, will be offered in both Chico and Oroville on various days throughout the months of July and August. Vaccine will be provided by appointment for a fee of $17 (while supplies last). Summer Grilling Tips To Make Meals Sizzle

(StatePoint) The dog days of summer need not be comprised of hot dogs alone. Home grill masters increasingly are spicing up a great American tradition by adding the flavors of the world to their summer meals. The results are both healthful and delicious. You can turn your backyard fare into something extra special with a little flavor punch, says grilling expert Sharon Fernandes, founder of Stonehouse 27, a line of exotic all-natural Indian sauces with a Portuguese and British influence. She suggests using fresh herbs and interesting spices, rather than sauces containing high fructose corn syrup and sodium. Here are some tips to make summer meals sizzle: Bring the world to your backyard by tenderizing meats and vegetables with an exotic marinade. Create one with sweet and spicy herbs, fruits, and peppers, or look for store-bought sauces that include natural ingredients like dates, tamarind, chilies and garlic. This saves time, and, if you buy a high quality sauce, nobody will know its not homemade! Its not all about meat. Skewer and grill onions, summer squash, peppers and eggplant for a seasonal veggie kebab. Cover the ends of wooden skewers with foil to keep them from burning. Experts expect many more foreclosures over 2011 & 2012. Most due to unavoidable financial hardships. Individuals fall behind, the bank then takes possession of their home. They then sell the home at a fraction of what was originally paid, devastating our local market, and the bank writes off the loss. An individual who loses their home due to foreclosure will have a negative rating for up to seven years. In many cases being vacated by eviction. Unfortunate for many who are suffering due to the devastated economy and housing crash. With loan modifications expected to help only around 700,000 to 800,000 foreclosures nationwide before the Home Affordability Modification Program (HAMP) expires at the end of 2012, this will leave little for homeowner options. With a short sale, homeowners who can prove a hardship may be eligible to have a Realtor negotiate an agreement on their behalf with the current note holders. If done properly, this will allow homeowners to sell their home for less than the balance owed. This can potentially eliminate deficiency balances for many owner-occupied homes, relieve a homeowner of their debt, and allow individuals to potentially repurchase in as little as two years. What a relief for those who owe more than their home is worth and can no longer afford the payments. Short sales have received a bad reputation. This is mainly due to the poor and slow servicing by banks and their services in the Short Sale process. The California Association of Realtors is currently in the process of working with major banks, U.S. Treasury officials, government sponsored entities including Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, and are urging them to standardize and improve Short Sale practices immediately. With the California Association Of Realtors on homeowners' side, you can attempt to beat the Foreclosure process. Beat the odds with a dignified solution, less impact on your credit, avoid Foreclosure, and leave with a sense of pride. Consulting a Realtor versed in the process prior to considering a short sale and discussing your situation in depth, will help determine the likelihood of a successful outcome. From pricing your home, negotiating a contract, to submitting the contract to the bank, there are numerous steps that need to be done properly to work yourself towards a successful outcome. While I was out of town this past month, my computer went bonkers. Not to worryit didnt catch a virus, and whatever it was that caused the problems, I have been reassured, it isnt contagious. The problem is, I am overly protective, and anyone in my household who gets sick cramps my style. In this case, I felt crippled when I was unable to communicate through this modern thing called Social Networking. A horrible fear caused me to nearly faint, when someone said, Cant you put pen to paper? EgadI prefer to communicate through my nimble ngers, on a keyboard. It would be terribly frustrating to this seasoned lady to write in long hand, after so many years of keyboarding. Before I get carried away on my personal problems, I need to focus on whats going on in our part of the world. That is where we boast: The Fun Starts Here... Where? Oroville, of course! Check out the Historical State Theatre, this weekend, (Friday and Saturday, July 29th and 30th at 6:30 pm). The musical Annie is on the agenda, with a cast of more than 40 singers and dancers. Our one and only Bill Falcon, will play Daddy Warbucks, and his beautiful wife, Carole Falcon will be the evil Miss Hannigan on Friday with Fionna Eve playing the role on Saturday. It is directed by Miss Jenn of Stamp Your Feet Dance Studio. Becca Neal, as Grace Farrell, demonstrates what a musical should be, with her magical voice. Starting the First Friday in August (5th.) plan to stick around for the FREE MOVIES at Bicentennial Park, sponsored by Downtown Business Association. A little birdie told me, Dave Glover of Honda, will be the Projectionist. And, Kathy Neal, of Centre For The Arts, will provide pre-show entertainment, and a sneak preview of her next State Theatre production of Thats Our Snow White. The YMCA will be selling snacks and soft drinks, so bring the family, lots of blankets and chairs to enjoy these movies each Friday, during the month of August. Something new and different at Dennys in Oroville entertainment. Thats right! Live entertainment for your enjoyment inside of Dennys from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, August 3rd. And if country music turns you on, remember Cassidys Family Restaurant invites local country talent to entertain every Thursday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. Dont forget its country music during lunch on Tuesdays at the Senior Cafe. Ahhhh yes, music heals the heart and mends the soul. Concerts at Riverbend Park continue to entertain and amuse us also on Thursday evening.
