Christ the King Mission Statement

The People of Christ the King in Lombard are a welcoming, vibrant faith community building the kingdom of God through our many ministries. We celebrate our diversity, seeking to realize the gifts of each member of our parish, as we are all joined together under one faith, in a spiritual journey of evangelization, service to others, and a reverence for all life. In the Eucharist, we find new life, and bring this life to others through stewardship, education, and worship.

Commemorative Brick Deadline

THE GREATEST FEAST

Easter is a big deala very big deal. Every one of the four Gospels provides an account of the resurrection of Jesus Christ, which makes perfect sense because the bodily resurrection of Jesus has always been the foundation of the Christian faith from the very beginning. It is an ancient tradition, based on the evidence of scripture and on the writings of the early church, that Jesus celebrated the Last Supper on a Thursday, died on a Friday, and rose from the dead on a Sunday. Thus, todays Gospel tells us that Jesus rose from the dead on the first day of the week (John 20:1). Within about a hundred years of Jesus resurrection Christians were celebrating the great Easter Vigil, beginning after dark on Holy Saturday and continuing until dawn on Easter morning. During this vigil, Christians heard salvation history through scripture readings, celebrated the resurrection of Jesus, and looked forward to his return. At the vigil men and women who had gone through three years of instruction were baptized and received First Communion. Without his death and rising to new life Jesus would have been merely another Jewish teacher and failed messiah. His teachings would be just a code of ethics and our worship in vain. We celebrate the Resurrection for fifty days, and for the rest of the year every Sunday is a kind of mini-Easter. Easter is the culmination of Christs life, death, and resurrection that we celebrate with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth (1 Corinthians 5:8). If you have not been to church for a while, we invite you to come back again and know that you are welcome in the community of faith. Please speak to the priest after Mass or call the parish office and let us help you feel at home.

If you are planning to order a commemorative brick, the deadline for turning in your application form is April 30. If you recall last month we dedicated our memorial plaza. This would be a wonderful Easter gift to your family and love one. Your purchase of a commemorative brick will also help our parish in paying for the much needed repairs. Thank you.

Novena to the Holy Spirit

ACT OF CONSECRATION TO THE HOLY SPIRIT
On my knees before the great multitude of heavenly witnesses, I offer myself, soul and body to You, Eternal Spirit of God. I adore the brightness of Your purity, the unerring keenness of Your justice, and the might of Your love. You are the Strength and Light of my soul. In You I live and move and am. I desire never to grieve You by unfaithfulness to grace and I pray with all my heart to be kept from the smallest sin against You. Mercifully guard my every thought and grant that I may always watch for Your light, and listen to Your voice, and follow Your gracious inspirations. I cling to You and give myself to You and ask You, by Your compassion to watch over me in my weakness. Holding the pierced Feet of Jesus and looking at His Five Wounds, and trusting in His Precious Blood and adoring His opened Side and stricken Heart, I implore You, Adorable Spirit, Helper of my infirmity, to keep me in Your grace that I may never sin against You. Give me grace, O Holy Spirit, Spirit of the Father and the Son to say to You always and everywhere, "Speak Lord for Your servant heareth." Amen. (To be recited daily during the Novena) PRAYER FOR THE SEVEN GIFTS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT O Lord Jesus Christ Who, before ascending into heaven did promise to send the Holy Spirit to finish Your work in the souls of Your Apostles and Disciples, deign to grant the same Holy Spirit to me that He may perfect in my soul, the work of Your grace and Your love. Grant me: The Spirit of Wisdom that I may despise the perishable things of this world and aspire only after the things that are eternal, The Spirit of Understanding to enlighten my mind with the light of Your divine truth, The Spirit of Counsel that I may ever choose the surest way of pleasing God and gaining heaven, The Spirit of Fortitude that I may bear my cross with You and that I may overcome with courage all the obstacles that oppose my salvation, The Spirit of Knowledge that I may know God and know myself and grow perfect in the science of the Saints, The Spirit of Piety that I may find the service of God sweet and amiable, The Spirit of Fear that I may be filled with a loving reverence towards God and may dread in any way to displease Him. Mark me, dear Lord, with the sign of Your true disciples and animate me in all things with Your Spirit. Amen. (To be recited daily during the Novena) Thou in toil art comfort sweet, Pleasant coolness in the heat, solace in the midst of woe. The Gift of Fortitude- The Gift of Fortitude By the gift of Fortitude the soul is strengthened against natural fear, and supported to the end in the performance of duty. Fortitude imparts to the will an impulse and energy which move it to under take without hesitancy the most arduous tasks, to face dangers, to trample under foot human respect, and to endure without complaint the slow martyrdom of even lifelong tribulation. "He that shall persevere unto the end, he shall be saved."Prayer- Come, O Blessed Spirit of Fortitude, uphold my soul in time of trouble and adversity, sustain my efforts after holiness, strengthen my weakness, give me courage against all the assaults of my enemies, that I may never be overcome and separated from Thee, my God and greatest Good. Amen. Our Father and Hail Mary ONCE. Glory be to the Father SEVEN TIMES.

April 24, 2011

This is an exciting time for the Church in the United States. Many of you have probably heard about the upcoming new translation for the Roman Missal which will take effect November 27, 2011. This is the third translation since the institution of the vernacular. Implementing the new Missal will give us an opportunity to take a fresh look at our liturgical practice and to renew our celebration of the Sacred Liturgy, which is the source and summit of Christian life (Second Vatican Council, Dogmatic Constitution on the Church [Lumen Gentium], no. 11). We, the faithful, encountering the Liturgy anew in the new text, can deepen our sharing in Christs sacrifice, offering our lives to the Father as we worship in Spirit and truth (Jn 4:23). Here at Christ the King, the parish staff have already been preparing for several months for this catechetical period prior to the implementation of the new Missal. We challenge each and every parishioner to take this time to truly renew themselves with the universal prayer of the Mass. We invite you to attend a four-hour workshop designed to inform, enlighten, refresh, and inspire you. We have several offerings of this workshop in both four-hour/single day sessions and twohour/two day sessions. We have weekend, weekday, evening, and morning sessions to fit anyones busy schedule. The entire Church in the United States has been blessed with this opportunity to deepen its understanding of the Sacred Liturgy, and to appreciate its meaning and importance in our lives. Dont miss these opportunities to grow in your faith with your brothers and sisters.
