CHAPTER IV FINDINGS AND DISCUSSION This chapter presents Finding and Discussion.

The Finding is presented as data description and discussion reveals some arguments and interpretation of the finding. A. Findings The findings of this research deal with the scoring classification of the students pre-test, post-test and Hypothesis testing of the paired sample containing mean score and standard deviation and test of significance. These findings are described follows: 1. Scoring Classification of Students pre-test and post-test. The students raw score of pre- test and post-test were classified into some criteria. The range scores were classified into seven levels based on Depdikbud scale. The criteria and percentage of students score of pre-test and post-test are as follows: Table 1. The RatePercentage and Frequency of the Students Score
No. Classification Score 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Very Good Good Fair Poor Very Poor Pre Test Frequency Percentage 91-100 0 0 75-90 3 7,9 61-74 19 50,0 51-60 10 26,3 0-50 6 15,8 38 100% Post Test Frequency Percentage 1 2,6 19 50,0 8 21,0 6 15,8 4 10,6 38 100%

The data of the table 1 indicate that before giving treatment, the students achievement in reading comprehension was fair level and after giving treatment the

students achievement was categorized as good level. The frequency and the rate percentage of the students pretest score can be seen from the Table 1 above that none of them got very good score. It was proved that there were 3 (7,9%) got good scores, 19 (50%) students got fair scores, 10 (26.3%) students got poor scores and 6 (15,8%) students got very poor scores. While the rate percentage of the posttest, 1(2,6%) student got very good scores, 19 (50.0%) students got good scores, 8 (21,0%)

students got fair scores, 6(15,8%) students got poor scores, and 4 (10,6%) students got verypoor scores. In other words, the rate percentage in the posttest was higher than the rater percentage in the pretest. 2. The mean score of standard deviation of the pre-test and post-test After calculating the result of the students pre-test and post-test, the mean score and standard deviation as presented in the following table: Table 2. The Mean Score and Standard Deviation of Pretest and Posttest Test Pre-Test Post-Test Mean Score 60.6129 72.4561 Standard Deviation 9.7061 13.505

Table 2 shows that the mean score of students pre-test was 60,6129 and posttest is 72.4561. The standard deviation of pre-test was 9.70612 and standard deviation of post-test is 13.50502. The mean score of the students post-test was higher than the mean score of pre-test, while standard deviation of students post-test was higher than standard deviation of pre-test. It means that teaching through folktales is effective to measures students reading comprehension.

3. T-Test Value In order to know whether or not difference between pretest and posttest is statistically significant, that t-test statistical analysis for non-independent sample was employed. The result of the t-test is t = 25.48. Table 3. The T-test of Students Comprehension Achievement Variable X2 X1 T-Test Value 8.684 T-Table 1.699

The value of the t-test is greater than t-table (8.684> 1.699). It can be concluded that there is a significant difference between the result of the students pretest and post-test. 4. Hypothesis Testing To find out degree of freedom (df), the writer using the following formula: df = N 1 df = 38 1 df = 37 For the level of significance (E) = 0.05 and degree of freedom (df) = 37, then the value of the t-table (25.48> 1.699). It means that null hypothesis (H0) is rejected while alternative hypothesis (H1) is accepted. In other words, that there is significant difference between the result of pretest and post test using the folktales in teaching reading. It means that is effective to improve the students reading comprehension.

From the analysis above, the researcher concludes that there is a significant difference between pre-test and post-test in the use of folktales to improve the students reading comprehension. In other words, folktales effective to be used in teaching reading.
