Order of Worship
St. Francis Church wants to encourage families to worship together. The practice of
dividing families for worship is a modern invention and is often detrimental to the goal
of worshipping as a body. In order to be a community where all ages feel welcome,
we provide coloring materials for children to use during worship and seek to be a
community that understands the specific gifts and challenges that children bring. We
encourage you, should you feel comfortable doing so, to sit toward the front with your
children, as little-ones are often more attentive if they can see what is happening.
That being said, we understand that there may be times when it is best to take
advantage of child care, which we have available in the room immediately through the
Kitchen off of the entryway.
In Preparation for worship: We invite you to take a few moments before the service
begins to be still, and rest from the business of your lives. Take time to breathe deeply,
and reflect upon the past week. When you’re ready, you might say the following prayer
or one like it in preparation for worship.
O Almighty God, who pours out on all who desire it the spirit of grace and
of supplication: Deliver us, when we draw near to you, from coldness of
heart and wanderings of mind, that with steadfast thoughts and kindled
affections we may worship you in spirit and in truth; though Jesus Christ
our Lord. Amen.

The Word of God
Processional: Come Thou fount of every blessing Hymnal 686
Opening Acclamation:
All Standing
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are
hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we
may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Canticle 20, Glory to God: Gloria in excelsis S 280
4
Celebrant: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.
Celebrant: Let us pray.
All sit.
Moses puts a choice before the people. Obeying God’s commandments is the way to
experience life’s fullness; ignoring God’s commandments is the way of death.
Moses said to the people, “You shall therefore lay up these words of mine in your heart
and in your soul; and you shall bind them as a sign upon your hand, and they shall be as
frontlets between your eyes. And you shall teach them to your children, talking of them
when you are sitting in your house, and when you are walking by the way, and when you
lie down, and when you rise. And you shall write them upon the doorposts of your house
and upon your gates, that your days and the days of your children may be multiplied in the
land which the Lord swore to your fathers to give them, as long as the heavens are above
the earth. “Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: the blessing, if you obey
the commandments of the Lord your God, which I command you this day, and the curse,
if you do not obey the commandments of the Lord your God, but turn aside from the way
which I command you this day, to go after other gods which you have not known.”
Psalm 46
All of us have sinned, but those who accept and trust in Jesus receive the gift of God’s
grace. Paul asserts that we can be proud to proclaim this good news.
For I am not ashamed of the gospel: it is the power of God for salvation to every one
who has faith, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is
revealed through faith for faith; as it is written, “He who through faith is righteous shall
live.”the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there
is no distinction; since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, they are justified
by his grace as a gift, through the redemption which is in Christ Jesus, whom God put
forward as an expiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s
righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins; it was
to prove at the present time that he himself is righteous and that he justifies him who has
faith in Jesus. Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. On what principle? On
the principle of works? No, but on the principle of faith. For we hold that a man is justified
by faith apart from works of law.
Or is God the God of Jews only? Is he not the God of Gentiles also? Yes, of Gentiles also,
since God is one; and he will justify the circumcised on the ground of their faith and the
uncircumcised through their faith. Do we then overthrow the law by this faith? By no
6
means! On the contrary, we uphold the law.
Our faith compels us to show mercy to the needy, even as acts of mercy help our faith to
grow. Jesus teaches that righteousness is an expression of our developing relationship
with God.
Gospeller: The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to _______.
People: Glory to you, Lord Christ.
Jesus said, “Not every one who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ shall enter the kingdom of heaven,
but he who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. On that day many will say to me,
‘Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name, and cast out demons in your name, and
do many mighty works in your name?’ And then will I declare to them, ‘I never knew you;
depart from me, you evildoers.’ Every one then who hears these words of mine and does
them will be like a wise man who built his house upon the rock; and the rain fell, and the
floods came, and the winds blew and beat upon that house, but it did not fall, because it
had been founded on the rock. And every one who hears these words of mine and does not
do them will be like a foolish man who built his house upon the sand; and the rain fell, and
the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell; and great was
the fall of it.” And when Jesus finished these sayings, the crowds were astonished at his
teaching, for he taught them as one who had authority, and not as their scribes.
We
believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty,
maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.
We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ,
the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light,
true God from true God,
begotten, not made,
of one Being with the Father.
Through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation
he came down from heaven:
by the power of the Holy Spirit
he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary,
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.
We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son.
With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified.
He has spoken through the Prophets.
We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come. Amen.
In the Anglican Cycle of Prayer we pray for The Church of the Province of
Melanesia The Most Revd Sir Ellison Leslie Pogo Archbishop of Melanesia &

Silence

only what accords with your will; and those good things which we dare
not, or in our blindness cannot ask, grant us for the sake of your Son Jesus
Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Confession
Celebrant: Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.
Silence.
All stand
Then the Ministers and the People may greet one another in the name of the Lord.
10
It is right, and a good and joyful thing, always and everywhere to give thanks to you,
Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.
For you are the source of light and life; you made us in your image, and called us to new
life in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Therefore we praise you, joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the
company of heaven, who for ever sing this hymn to proclaim the glory of your Name:
Holy and gracious Father: In your infinite love you made us for yourself; and, when we
had fallen into sin and become subject to evil and death, you, in your mercy, sent Jesus
Christ, your only and eternal Son, to share our human nature, to live and die as one of
us, to reconcile us to you, the God and Father of all.
He stretched out his arms upon the cross, and offered himself, in obedience to your will, a
perfect sacrifice for the whole world.
On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, our Lord Jesus Christ took
bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and
said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of
me.”
After supper he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them,
and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed
for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the
remembrance of me.”
We celebrate the memorial of our redemption, O Father, in this sacrifice of praise and
thanksgiving. Recalling his death, resurrection, and ascension, we offer you these gifts.
Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be for your people the Body and Blood of your Son,
the holy food and drink of new and unending life in him. Sanctify us also that we may
faithfully receive this holy Sacrament, and serve you in unity, constancy, and peace; and
at the last day bring us with all your saints into the joy of your eternal kingdom.
All this we ask through your Son Jesus Christ. By him, and with him, and in him, in the
unity of the Holy Spirit all honor and glory is yours, Almighty Father, now and for ever.
AMEN.
11
And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,
The Gifts of God for the People of God. Take them in remembrance that Christ died for
you, and feed on him in your hearts by faith, with thanksgiving.
ON RECEIVING COMMUNION: All baptized Christians who are in love and charity
with their neighbors are welcome to receive communion. If you do not wish to receive,
you are invited to come for a prayer of blessing—simply cross your arms over your chest
to let the servers know that you will not be receiving. Prayers before receiving can
be found on pages 337 (the Prayer of Humble Access) and 834 in the Book of Common
Prayer (the red books available under your chairs).

The Recessional: Be Thou my vision Hymnal 488
In Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus talks about the challenge of entering God’s kingdom. Simply
relying on talking about God will not do. We are to act in accordance with God’s will.
Moses, speaking to the Israelites, calls on them to write that will of God expressed in
God’s commandments on their heart and soul and mind, to make them part of their very
existence. Jesus tells us that if we do not act according to his words we are as foolish as the
man is in his little parable.
Our second reading begins a series from Romans. Here Paul explores the relation between
faith and law. He is certain that faith is the sole means by which we are put in a right
relationship with God. Paul will struggle with the relationship between keeping God’s law
and the primacy of faith. In the next few weeks, we will join him in that struggle.
When in our worship and our personal prayers we call out, “Lord, Lord,” we must
remember that our words of praise and petition alone are not enough. We are called to be
people who act as well as talk, who actively carry out God’s will that all people be brought
by our words and deeds into God’s kingdom. We are reminded of that in every liturgy
when we are dismissed and sent out into the world as ministers of Christ.
