AFAC'S TRIBUTE TO YVES PLANTIN

“Born in 1938 (Paris), Yves Plantin studied archi-
tecture at the École des Beaux-Arts, Paris. After two
years in the French Navy, he wrote the script for and
directed two short films on Art Nouveau architecture
and Bugatti cars, which enabled him to win a Golden
Lion award at the Venice Film Festival. An art dealer
in Paris for 20 years, specialising in the 1890-1930 pe-
riod, he sold to private and public collections such as
the N.Y. Metropolitan Museum, the Virginia Museum
of Fine Arts, the de Mesnil Houston Foundation, the
Musée d’Orsay, Paris, and to numerous French and Eu-
ropean museums. Yves Plantin was named a Chevalier
de l’Ordre des Arts et Lettres by the French Minister of
Culture in 1996. His link with horses dates to the early
1980s, when he moved to Ginals to set up his PA stud.
Sisinius (In Chaallah III), his first PA horse in 1987, twice
accounted for Dormane (Manganate). Yves Plantin used
Polish, Russian and French mares as the foundations for
his stud. Amongst the horses he has bred/or owned,
Whalid Al Dunixi (Dunixi), the leading French PA 3-year-
old, springs to mind. Other outstanding performers
were Verlino (Habdur), Vertigo (Djourman), Vert Olive
(Elbing), Vercors (Djelfor), Mega (Manganate), Nouil-
laugratin (Dunixi) (best French PA 3-year-old filly of her
generation) Verlize (Djelfor), Verdoyante (Dormane) (a
winner at Chantilly), Nougatin (Dormane), Vite Amine
(Dormane) (the leading French PA filly of her 3-year-old
generation), Djiin (Tidjani), Quazar (Djelfor), (a winner

AN EXCEPTIONAL CAREER
He had an exceptional career. Yves Plantin was the Pre-
sident of the ECAHO (European Conference of Arab
Horse Organizations) Racing Commission (1994-1998),
the founder and inaugural president of IFAHR (Interna-
tional Federation of Arabian Horse Racing Authorities)
(1999-2002), and he sat on IFAHR Executive Committee
(2002-2007). He also filled a similar role during his pre-
sidency of AFAC, which was a more recent occurrence
(2011-2018). In 2011, Yves Plantin became vice-president
and secretary of AFAC. He was elevated to the presiden-
cy that same year – a position he held until 2018, He
was vice-president of the same body from 2018 to 2021,
and its honorary president as of 2022. Ever since his time
with the ECAHO Racing Commission, and the founda-
tion of IFAHR, his passion for the PA breed and his ob-
jectives have remained undiminished. He was a tireless
advocate for the harmonisation of rules and regulations,
for the development of professional PA racing in most
countries, as well as beating the drum for national Ara-
bian Horse Jockey Clubs as regards making their own
decisions. The raising of the standard of racing, inter-
national competition, and facilitating the movement of
horses and the sharing information between countries,
are also part of his achievements.

UN PARCOURS EXCEPTIONNEL
Son parcours est exceptionnel. Yves Plantin a été ainsi
président de la Commission de courses de l’Ecaho de
1994 à 1998, fondateur et premier président de l’Ifahr
de 1999 à 2002, membre du Comité exécutif de l’Ifahr
de 2002 à 2007, et également lors de sa présidence
de l’Afac, plus récemment (2011-2018). En 2011, Yves
Plantin devient vice-président et secrétaire de l’Afac,
puis il prend la présidence la même année jusqu’en
2018, la vice-présidence jusqu’en 2021, et enfin la
présidence d’honneur en 2022. Depuis l’époque de la
Commission courses de l’Ecaho et de la fondation de
l’Ifahr, sa passion pour le pur-sang arabe et ses objec-
tifs sont restés inchangés. Sans relâche, il luttait pour
l’harmonisation des règles et des règlements, pour le
développement des courses professionnelles arabes
dans la plupart des pays, mais aussi pour l’indépen-
dance des Jockey Clubs arabes nationaux quant aux
décisions spécifiques concernant leurs courses. L’élé-
vation du niveau des courses, de la compétition in-
ternationale, l’échange de chevaux et d’informations
entre les pays relèvent aussi de ses réussites.

One of his longest battles over time, with its share of fai-
lures but also successes, will remain that of defending the
integrity of racing through the drafting of appropriate
rules for the acceptance of PA races within the structure
of horse racing. Axelle Nègre de Watrigant was keen to
pay tribute to him: “Monsieur Plantin, with whom I was
lucky enough to work alongside in the AFAC office, was a
veritable mine of information and he had a wealth of ex-
perience. He was honest, kind, incredibly dynamic, highly
educated and invariably passionate. He dedicated his life
to this passion and to young people, which took the form
of his savoir faire and knowledge. We were are an unusual
pairing but an efficient one at that!”
AFAC would like to extend its most sincere condolences
to all his family and friends.
The PA sector comes under the spotlight at
La Teste racecourse in July
We were treated to two great days of racing in the form
of Sheikh Mansoor Festival on July 6, which has beco-
me the highlight of the summer, whose three races for
the breed included the Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Cri-
térium des Pouliches. The latter race has been afforded
Gr1 PA status this year. The second meeting, on July 13,
was sponsored for the first time by the Royal Stables of
Oman, and it showcased the emerging young PA talents
following the staging of two Gr3 PA races for 3-year-olds.
These events acted as a magnet to all the necessary par-
ties which ensure that such events become unmissable
occasions, and this was down to the presence of sponsors,
personalities from the [racing institutions], a large number
of members, plus that indispensable factor: quality fields!
Also worth noting is the enhancement of the PA sales
sector with the creation of two very distinct sales, orga-
nised by Osarus and Auctav, which delighted buyers and
sellers alike this summer.

semée d’échecs mais aussi de réussites, restera celle
de la défense de l’intégrité des courses par des règles
appropriées pour l’acceptation des pur-sang arabes en

qui j›ai eu la chance de partager du temps au sein du
Bureau de l’Afac, était une mine d’or, d’informations et
d’expérience. Il était intègre, aimable, incroyablement
dynamique, très cultivé et toujours passionné. À cette
passion d’ailleurs, il a dédié sa vie, et aux jeunes, son
savoir et ses connaissances. Nous formions un binôme
original mais efficace ! »

La filière pur-sang arabe mise en avant sur
l’hippodrome de La Teste au mois de juillet
Deux belles journées de sport, le Sheikh Mansoor Fes-
tival du 6 juillet, devenue l’actualité phare de l’été, avec
trois courses dont le Sheikh Mansoor Festival Critérium
des Pouliches promu Gr1 PA cette année. Et la seconde,
le 13 Juillet, pour la première fois sponsorisée par les
écuries royales d'Oman, qui fait émerger les jeunes ta-
lents avec ses deux courses de Gr3 PA pour 3ans.
Ces événements ont réuni tous les ingrédients nécessaires
pour faire de ces dates des rendez-vous internationaux in-
contournables avec la présence des sponsors, de person-
nalités institutionnelles, d’adhérents venus en nombre et
le facteur indispensable : des partants de qualité !
À noter également, l’enrichissement du calendrier des
ventes de pur-sang arabes avec les créations de deux
ventes bien distinctes organisées par Osarus et Auctav qui
ont fait le bonheur des acheteurs et des vendeurs cet été.

LA TESTE CARD RESONATES TO THE BEAT
OF THE ROYAL CAVALRY OF OMAN
UNE JOURNÉE AUX COULEURS DES ÉCURIES ROYALES D’OMAN À LA TESTE
“At La Teste racecourse on July 13th, the Association
Française du Cheval Arabe de Course (AFAC), honoured
its latest sponsor, the Royal Cavalry of Oman, by staging
the Royal Cavalry of Oman - Prix Razzia III (Gr3 PA),
and the Royal Cavalry of Oman - Prix Tidjani (Gr3 PA).
The young generation was able to showcase the extent
of its talents via the wins of Mezown (Al Mamun Monlau)
in the fillies’ race, and Joe Star (Al Mourtajez) in the colts
and geldings’ heat. A child (chosen from a member of
the public) selected the best turned out horse in the
two PA Group prizes, whereas the travelling head lads in
the relevant races were rewarded with gifts bearing the
Royal Cavalry of Oman and AFAC logos. Around sixty
people were able to share moments of conviviality by
attending a buffet, serving regional specialities, at the
panoramic terrace area. It was also an opportunity for
the various players within the racing world to exchange
ideas in a friendly atmosphere.

SHEIKH MANSOOR FESTIVAL DAY AT LA TESTE
RETOUR SUR LA GRANDE JOURNÉE DU SHEIKH MANSOOR FESTIVAL À LA TESTE
The PA horse was in the spotlight at La Teste-de-
Buch on July 6th. Under the patronage of the Sheikh
Mansoor Festival, three of the nine races were reserved
for the breed, including a Gr1 PA won by the high class
Lady Princess. The Osarus PA sale also took place after
racing. In the aftermath of this coveted occasion, a
statement emanating from l’Association Française du
Cheval Arabe de Course (AFAC) read : “On Wednesday
at La Teste racecourse [July 6th], AFAC honoured one
of its main sponsors: the Sheikh Mansoor Festival.
Three races on the card were set aside for PA horses:
the Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Critérium des Pouliches –
recently upgraded to Gr1 PA status, the Sheikh Mansoor
Festival - Coupe du Sud-Ouest (Gr3 PA), and the Sheikh
Mansoor Festival-Bengali d’Albret, which provided
a fabulous spectacle following the victories of Lady
Princess, Soko and No Tear Al Maury. A carpet, signed
by the sponsor and by jockey, Christophe Soumillon,
who scored a Gr1 PA victory aboard the mare Lady
Princess in the Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Critérium des
Pouliches, was offered [as a gift] to a member of the
public. A child, chosen from the public, was also given
the opportunity of deciding the best turned out horse
award in the three PA races, with the travelling head
lads rewarded with Sheikh Mansoor Festival branded
gifts. In conjunction with La Teste racecourse, over a
hundred guests were able to share a convivial moment

DAVID LUMET ET FLORIN SUTA OUVRENT LA MARQUE CHEZ LES PUR-SANG ARABES
Florin Suta is a horse transporter based in Romania.
His company is called Junior Speed. In tandem with his
wife Raluca, Florin Suta scored a first victory in France
with a PA horse. A Shadwell
acquisition, Monaasib (Dahess)
made a successful debut with a
victory at Dax. He subsequently
ran third in the Al Rayyan Cup -
Prix Kesberoy (Gr1 PA) for trainer
Élisabeth Bernard. Based in the
West of France, David Lumet is one of the mainstays
in France as regards breaking-in horses and the pre-
training phase. He’s also the organiser of the Lumet Sale
of jumping stock (the horses are schooled over sticks
by their riders) on August 20th. David Lumet is also a
passionate breeder. He has bred some good jumpers
in the image of Monster Caroli (Maresca Sorrento),
and winner of the Prix Dawn Run (L) over hurdles at
Auteuil... David Lumet also owns a PA broodmare. He
is notably the breeder of Jawed I (Al Mamun Monlau),
whose career began with a win at Pompadour in the
colours of Catherine Lumet. The horse was later sold to
His Highness Sheikh Mohammed Bin Khalifa Al Thani.

MADRASSA RÉCOMPENSE KHALAF AL SHAMMARI DE SES INVESTISSEMENTS
One of Shadwell’s dispersal sales was held at Mey-
dan, and the top lot Madrassa cost the equivalent of
€89,845. He already achieved black type status as, his
second career start on 26 June, yielded a second in the
Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr2 PA).
His owner, the Saudi Arabian national Khalaf Al Shamma-
ri, was at Chantilly, and here he answers our questions...
« I bought Madrassa (No Risk Al Maury) at one of Shad-
well dispersal sales. When you are familiar with the
background of Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, you know
that he didn’t do things on a wing and a prayer. He was
a great breeder. He was very respected. So we seized
the opportunity to buy this colt from a great breeding
concern. Furthermore, we had seen him before he went
through the ring. He has a great pedigree and his sire
is a great stallion. This type of horse, would have been
impossible to buy were Sheikh Hamdan still alive. There
were other good lots on offer in this sale. However, I
set my heart on acquiring Madrassa and focused on
him. Sometimes people buy a horse but they don’t
give enough thought to the rest of its career.

Une des ventes de réduction de Shadwell a été
organisée à Meydan et Madrassa en fut le top price
pour 89.845 €. Dès sa deuxième sortie, il est donc déjà
black type car le 26 juin, il a décroché la deuxième
place dans la Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux
Arabes (Gr2 PA). Son propriétaire, le Saoudien Khalaf
Al Shammari, était à Chantilly et il a répondu à nos
questions… « J’ai acheté Madrassa (No Risk Al Maury)
lors d’une des ventes de dispersion de Shadwell.
Quand on connaît l’histoire du cheikh Hamdan Al
Maktoum, on sait qu’il ne faisait pas les choses au
hasard. C’était un grand éleveur. Très respecté. Nous
avons donc saisi l’opportunité d’acheter ce poulain
issu d’un grand élevage. Nous l’avions d’ailleurs vu
avant son passage en vente publique. Il a un grand
pedigree et son père est un grand étalon. Si le cheikh
Hamdan était encore en vie, ce type de chevaux aurait
été impossible à acheter. Il y avait d’autres bons lots
dans cette vente. Mais je voulais vraiment Madrassa et
je me suis concentré sur lui. Parfois, certains achètent
un cheval et ils ne se préoccupent pas assez de la suite
de la carrière.

However, choosing the right trainer for each individual
horse for example, is extremely important. The purchase
is just the beginning of the pro-
cess. What is the point of buying
a good horse, if you don’t give
it every chance to shine? When I
chose Madrassa, I said to myself
that it was incumbent on myself to
ensure that the horse is afforded
the best opportunities. This is so-
mething Sheikh Hamdan would
have done himself. I hold Mon-
sieur Guillemin in high regard. He
always does the best by the horse
and the owner. He’s the one who
comes up with suggestions for the
horse’s race programme. In gene-
ral terms, you have to have total
confidence in a trainer as regards
achieving the full potential of a
horse. As he’s the one who deals
with the horse on a daily basis. I’ve
already had a filly in-training with
him. He was very professional and
honest. He gave me good advice. » « In Saudi Arabia,
I have English thoroughbreds and PA horses. I bought
a good mare from Guy Barry, of Élevage Lotois fame,
and namely: Kerlia Lotoise (Kerbella). She produced
a quality filly for me, Generalat Shammar (General).
Her son Naame (Dahess), too, is very smart. We harbour
real ambitions for the pair next season. In Saudi Arabia,
the quality of horses is getting better and better.

Madrassa, je me suis dit que
j’allais faire en sorte qu’il bénéficie
des meilleures opportunités. Tout
comme le cheikh Hamdan l’aurait
fait lui-même. Je tiens monsieur
Guillemin en haute estime. Il
fait toujours le maximum pour
le cheval et pour le propriétaire.
C’est lui qui fait les propositions
pour son programme. D’une
manière générale, il faut donner
sa pleine confiance à un entraîneur
pour atteindre la plénitude du
potentiel d’un cheval. C’est lui
qui le voit au quotidien. J’ai déjà
eu une pouliche avec lui. Et il
avait fait preuve de beaucoup de
professionnalisme et d’honnêteté. Il m’avait donné de
bons conseils. » « En Arabie Saoudite, j’ai des pur-sang
anglais et des pur-sang arabes. J’ai acheté une bonne
jument chez Guy Barry, de l’élevage Lotois : Kerlia
Lotoise (Kerbella). Elle m’a donné une bonne fille,
Generalat Shammar (General). Son fils Naame (Dahess)
est lui aussi très bon. Nous avons de réelles ambitions
avec eux pour la saison à venir.

People focus on buying quality stock. Horses with great
pedigrees [are sought after]. The best horses in the
world, in both breeds, are now being aimed at the top
Saudi races. The sport of horse racing is actively sup-
ported by Prince Ahmad Bin Salman. This is very impor-
tant. The prize money levels are an incentive. We will
see this pro-active policy bear fruit in a few years time.
We can see that the Emiratis, the Qataris, the Oma-
nis... have the intention of racing more often in Saudi
Arabia. And with many horses... » « The only problem
in France, in my opinion, relates to the difficulties of
importing horses. This has happened to me twice. The
transport agent explained to me each time that it was
the administration’s fault. As it took a full eight months
to sign off the paperwork before receiving the horse.
France is losing a big slice of the market share because
of this... This is especially so in Saudi Arabia, where
things are happening at great pace. I think that sim-
plifying procedures and shortening delays is a matter
of urgency. The future of French breeders depends on
this. I’ m speaking from the perspective as a friend of
France which I am. «I have often gone racing in France.
It’s very well organised. [It’s] very professional. It’s really
the country where the PA horse and the English tho-
roughbred mingle. There is a real expertise when it co-
mes to organising the big events. »

En Arabie Saoudite, la qualité des chevaux s’améliore
vraiment. Les gens achètent de la qualité, des
grands pedigrees. Les meilleurs chevaux du monde,
dans les deux races, visent désormais les grandes
courses saoudiennes. Le sport hippique bénéficie
du soutien actif du prince Ahmad bin Salman. C’est
très important. Les allocations sont incitatives.
Dans quelques années, nous verrons tous les
résultats de sa politique volontariste. On voit très
bien que les Émiratis, les Qataris, les Omanais… ont
l’intention de venir de plus en plus souvent courir en
Arabie Saoudite. Avec beaucoup de chevaux… »
« Le seul problème, en France, est selon moi les
difficultés que l’on rencontre au moment d’importer
les chevaux. Cela m’est arrivé à deux reprises. Le
transporteur m’a à chaque fois expliqué que c’était la
faute de l’administration. Il a fallu huit mois pour finir les
papiers et recevoir le cheval. La France perd de grandes
parts de marché à cause de cela... En particulier en
Arabie Saoudite où il se développe à grande vitesse.
Je pense qu’il est urgent de simplifier les démarches et
de raccourcir les délais. L’avenir des éleveurs français
en dépend. Je parle du point de vue de l’ami de la
France que je suis. » « Je suis souvent venu aux courses
en France. C’est très bien organisé, très professionnel.
C’est vraiment le pays où le pur-sang arabe et le pur-
sang anglais se côtoient. Il y a une réelle expertise pour
l’organisation des grandes compétitions. »

A total of 51 lots were catalogued for the three
sessions which comprised the inaugural Auctav Arabian
Summer Sale on July 20th. Arnaud Angéliaume, Auctav's
Managing Director, said: "As we have seen during the
Shadwell dispersal sales, which were organised by
Auctav, the different strands operating in the PA sector
were really great, and they responded positively to
this new business opportunity, both as vendors and
buyers. The last few days have been fraught for our
administrative teams, as they to deal with both opening
account requests and access to repositories. We would
like to thank all the sellers, and those people who
registered horses [in the sale], plus the bidders and the
buyers, all of whom made this inaugural Auctav Arabian
Summer Sale a real success. We would also like to thank
AFAC for its support. Another Auctav Arabian Sale will
take place this year (2022), subject to all conditions
being met."

SAUBOUAS ON ALL FRONTS
Saubouas Bloodstock had the final say as regards
acquiring the 2-year-old No Reply Al Maury (Azadi)
for €150,000, and when it came to bringing the
hammer down, at €30,000, for RB Paris Flyght
(Al Mamun Monlau). Paul Basquin explained:
"No Reply Al Maury was acquired for the UAE National
Stables (Helal Alalawi). I went to inspect him the
day before the sale at the Haras de Saint-Vincent.
His full sister made an excellent debut at Langon and
was bought by Al Shaqab. No Reply is a physically
magnificent type, and allies size, bone and a very good
way of moving. He hails from an exceptional maternal
family responsible for producing Nacrée Al Maury
(Kesberoy) and Lady Princess (General). He is going
to be based in France, and with the idea of eventually
becoming a stallion as he is devoid of the blood of
Amer (Wafi). RB Paris Flyght was bought for a client of
the Haras du Saubouas, and will remain in training in
France. An attractive filly by Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz),
she has size and scope. She comes from a very good
family and the dam has been a very good producer."
Saubouas Bloodstock was the top buyer at the sale,
having spent €402,000 for eight lots.

LE SAUBOUAS SUR TOUS LES FRONTS
C'est Saubouas Bloodstock qui a eu le dernier mot
pour le 2ans No Reply Al Maury (Azadi), à 150.000 €,
et, à 30.000 € pour RB Paris Flyght (Al Mamun Monlau).
Paul Basquin a expliqué : « No Reply Al Maury a été
acheté pour UAE National Stables (Helal Alalawi).

Paul Basquin bought the three horses that fetched
the top prices in the session reserved for 3-year-olds
and horses-in-training. Noe Al Maury (Mahabb) was a
case in point after being sold for €47,000. This half-
brother of the PA Group winning Natalma Al Maury
(Dahess) is as yet un-raced. His current trainer, Damien
de Watrigant, believes that he has bags of potential.
Paul Basquin added: "The three foals were bought for a
Qatari trainer. They are due to race next season at Doha.
" In the breeding stock part of the sale, which included
yearlings, broodmares and a stallion, the 4-year-old
Ebaa (Dormane) was sold for €54,000. Her dam is
none other than Al Dahma (Amer). Paul Basquin said:
"It’s rare to see this kind of bloodline on the market. Hers
is an exceptional pedigree. She was successfully tested
in-foal (artificial insemination) to Nieshan (Akbar). She
was bought by some of my clients, and is destined for
the Haras de Saubouas. She’s pigeon-toed, in common
with many of the progeny of Dormane, but who prove
to be very good producers."
ZIED ROMDHANE ACTS ON BEHALF OF LIBYAN
AND NORTH AFRICAN CLIENTS
The stallion TM Thunder Struck (Majl Arabd) was
purchased by Zied Romdhane for €31,000. The first
offspring of the Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA) second are
yearlings. The bloodstock agent said: "He should be
a good cross for Tunisian mares and those in Morocco.
This US-bred as no French blood. I've taken an interest
in him for three years. He has run everywhere, and is
tough and very solid. Regarding the purchase of two
mares, they were acquired for a Libyan client who
is setting up a breeding operation in Libya. Given
an expanding racing calendar, several investors are
developing their breeding operations. Safira du Paon
(Akbar) is an elderly mare, but has she already proved
to be a very good producer, and is in-foal to a good
stallion. As for Eclipse Al Maury (Munjiz), I’m partial to
the family of Braise de Ghazal (Kesberoy), and I like the
fact that this daughter of Munjiz is in-foal to Dahess
(Amer), who is a very good producer. »

Paul Basquin a acquis les trois chevaux ayant réalisé
les meilleurs prix de la session consacrée aux 3ans et
chevaux à l'entraînement. C'est le cas de Noe Al Maury
(Mahabb) pour 47.000 €. Ce frère utérin de la gagnante
de Groupe Natalma Al Maury (Dahess) est inédit. Son
entraîneur actuel, Damien de Watrigant, estime qu'il a

ZIED ROMDHANE POUR DES CLIENTS LIBYENS ET
MAGHRÉBINS
L'étalon TM Thunder Struck (Majl Arabd) a été acheté
31.000  € par Zied Romdhane. Les premiers produits
de ce deuxième de la Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA) sont
yearlings. Le courtier explique : « Il devrait bien
croiser avec les juments tunisiennes et au Maroc. Cet
américain n'a pas de sang français. Cela fait trois ans
que je m'intéressais à lui. Il a couru partout, il est dur, il
est très solide. Pour ce qui est des deux juments, elles
ont été achetées pour un client libyen qui monte son
élevage en Lybie. Le programme s'étoffe et plusieurs
investisseurs développent leurs élevages. Safira du
Paon (Akbar) a un peu d'âge mais elle a déjà très bien
produit et elle est pleine d'un bon étalon. Quant à
Eclipse Al Maury (Munjiz), j'aime la famille de Braise
de Ghazal (Kesberoy) et j'aime que cette fille de Munjiz
soit pleine de Dahess (Amer) qui produit très bien. »

The online auction, organised by Iwantthewinner.
com, took place over a 24 hour period on July
4th and 5th. The catalogue consisted of 13 lots,
including five PA horses from the Al
Khalediah Poland breeding operation.
At the conclusion of the sale, four of
the five PA mares had changed hands,
having attracted a lot of interest from a
variety of countries: Britain, Italy, Poland,
Qatar, Kuwait and Italy, plus, of course,
France. Valentin Adam said: “The fact
that there were numerous requests to
open accounts, and matched by the lively
activity of the bidders, proves that the
interest generated by internet sales has
assumed an international dimension which is part of the
DNA of Iwantthewinner.com. We thank the Al Khalediah
Poland breeding division for the trust they placed in us,
and wish the buyers every success.”

GROUND BREAKING OSARUS SALE AUGURS

UNE PREMIÈRE QUI EN APPELLE D'AUTRES POUR OSARUS
The PA breed were in the spotlight at La Teste-de-
Buch on July 6. Under the patronage of the Sheikh
Mansour Festival, three of the nine races were reserved
for the breed, including a Gr1 PA race won by the high
class Lady Princess (General). The Osarus Sale was
held after the race meeting. It marked Osarus’ first
involvement in the PA sales sector, having undertaken
this venture in partnership with AFAC.
A SECTOR IN WHICH IT’S NECESSARY TO HAVE A
PRESENCE Emmanuel Viaud, the director of Osarus,
reminisced on this ground-breaking sale which will
certainly herald others in the future: «It was important
to position ourselves in the PA sales sector: as the
South-West is the major region regarding the racing
and breeding of PA horses. We wanted to this to be
a launchpad for ourselves, and it was the right time
and the right day to do so. We had identified the
July 6 as being a very good day of racing, as the card
comprised a Gr1 PA race, with racecourse staging a
great day’s racing for the PA breed. The results of this
ground breaking sale were good as a satisfactory 70
per cent of lots auctioned were sold. The three top lots
were acquired by Paul Basquin, who was at the sale,
and the online trade was very positive. The top price
of €50,000 was paid for Princess Divana (General),
herself a magnificent filly by General (Amer), and one
boasting an exceptional pedigree. We will now be able
to [project for the future] - based on the results of this
inaugural sale. The catalogue makes a sale, as we know:

Après les courses, Osarus tenait sa toute première

UN SEGMENT SUR LEQUEL IL FAUT ÊTRE PRÉSENT
Emmanuel Viaud, directeur d'Osarus, est revenu sur
cette première qui va très certainement en appeler
d'autres : « Il était important de se positionner sur
le segment des ventes de pur-sang arabes : le Sud-
Ouest est la grande région de courses et d'élevage
de cette race. Nous souhaitions nous lancer et c'était
le bon moment, ainsi que la bonne journée pour
le faire. Nous avions identifié le 6 juillet car il s'agit
d'une très belle journée de courses, avec un Gr1 PA
et, ainsi, l'hippodrome proposait une grande journée
du pur-sang arabe. Les résultats de cette première
sont bons, avec un taux de vendus satisfaisant de
près de 70 %. Les trois top-lots ont été achetés par
Paul Basquin, présent, mais nous avons aussi eu une
belle activité sur les enchères online. Le top price
de 50.000 € a été enregistré pour Princess Divana
(General), une magnifique pouliche par General
(Amer) avec un pedigree exceptionnel. Nous allons
désormais pouvoir travailler à partir des résultats de
cette première vente. Le catalogue fait une vente, on

YVES PLANTIN:
A LIFE GIVEN TO THE PASSION OF BREEDING
YVES PLANTIN, UNE VIE D'ÉLEVAGE ET DE PASSION
In 2017, Nafees (Azadi) recorded his first Gr1 PA win
after turning on the style in the Qatar Derby des Pur-
sang Arabes de 4ans (Gr1 PA). He then went on to add
the British equivalent of this race in the colours of his
breeder, the Royal Stables of Oman. On this occasion,
we went to meet Yves Plantin, the breeder of Nafees'
dam, and a man who enhanced this bloodline. «Nafees
hails from a maternal line which was developed by
Françoise Blondel and Yves Plantin over the last three
decades. As they bred the dam and the grandam. In
2017, Yves Plantin told us at the time "The successes
of Nafees make me happy, and I’m delighted to see
that this line is also responsible for good horses in
other top breeding operations." The breeder, a past
President of AFAC, outlined the genesis of this origin
which represents a departure from the tried and tested
in the world of horse racing.
SISINIUS: THE TRIGGER FACTOR
Concerning their initial baby steps as breeders of
racehorses, Yves Plantin added. "Initially, we had PA
horses, but we weren’t au fait with the racing world.
The trigger factor proved to be Sisinius (In Chaallah
III). We bought him after he had raced a few times,
and it was this horse who enabled us to discover the
world of racing. This infused us with the desire to breed
racehorses. Meeting Renée-Laure Koch also proved

À cette occasion, nous étions partis à la rencontre
d’Yves Plantin, éleveur de la mère de Nafees après
avoir mis en valeur cette lignée. Nafees est issu d’une
origine maternelle développée par Françoise Blondel
et Yves Plantin depuis trois décennies. Ils ont élevés
sa mère et sa deuxième mère. En 2017, Yves Plantin
nous avait alors confié : « Les succès de Nafees me font
plaisir et je suis ravi de voir que cette souche produit
aussi des bons chevaux dans d’autres bons élevages. »
L’éleveur, qui a été Président de l’Afac, nous a détaillé
la genèse de cette origine qui sort des sentiers battus
dans l’univers des courses de pur-sang arabe.
SISINIUS, LE DÉCLENCHEUR
Au sujet de leurs premiers pas l’élevage de galopeurs,
Yves Plantin nous a confié  : «  Au départ, nous avions
quelques chevaux arabes, mais ne nous connaissions pas
le monde des courses. Le déclic est arrivé avec Sisinius (In
Chaallah III). Nous l’avons acheté après quelques coures
et c’est lui qui nous fait découvrir l’univers du galop. Cela
nous a donné l’envie d’élever des chevaux de courses.
La rencontre avec Renée-Laure Koch fut également

decisive. Initially, we boarded our horses with her. She
was one of the driving forces behind the Association
France Arabe Course, and the forerunner of AFAC. The
discovery of this particular world, allied to the victories
of Sisinius, gave us the desire to invest more in this
sector. At present, we have about ten broodmares, but
we don’t breed from them every year."
GENEALOGICAL INTUITION
"We started in 1987. At that time, there were less than
ten pure French PA mares left in France. From the
outset, we sought to mix French PA bloodlines with
Russian and Polish ones. Even nowadays, we still work
along these lines. The Nafees' line traces back to Evita
(Pritok): a mare we acquired in Denmark in the 1980s.
Travelling to Denmark in order to buy PA horses was
virtually unheard of. A friend of ours had visited a
Danish stud. She compiled a list of the pedigrees of
their horses, and the name Evita caught our attention.
Our motivation was totally pedigree focused. Despite
having no inkling of what the mare actually looked
like, we were seeking certain Russian mares, who
hailed from very old French bloodlines, and ones
which had been exported in the inter-war period.This
is how our two best bloodlines came into existence
as these mares were a particularly good blend when
bred to French PA stallions. If the Russian and Polish
bloodlines were mainly known for their success in the
show ring, some of them were nonetheless good for
racing. They served as a basis for US PA breeding. The
other important mare of our breeding operation, Eliza
(Wist), was born in France from Polish breeding stock.
Her name crops up in the pedigrees of several Gr1 PA
winners, and namely Simmbad (Njewman) and Versac
Py (Njewman). We subsequently acquired French
bloodlines, but it’s really the families of Evita and Eliza
that have been the most successful for us. Initially,
Evita's descendants were not big physically. However,
the change in the conditions in which horses are bred,
plus successive crosses with French stallions proved
beneficial, and consequently they have filled out. It
would be very difficult to replicate nowadays what we
did a few decades ago, and that is by trawling into
pedigrees which were both fairly obscure and exotic
ones as a starting point. Indeed, the selection process
and the quality of horses has come on considerably."
VITELLA: A SPECTACULAR FILLY
"Vivamaria (Njewman), the dam of Nafees, is a full
sister to Vitella. The latter is certainly the best horse
that we have ever bred. She was exceptional. She
cruised into the lead in her races, but the problem was
that she very often idled in her races after hitting the
front. That's how she got pipped at the post on several
occasions. Olivier Trigodet was obliged to anchor her
at the back of the pack with a view to holding her

décisive. Au départ, nos chevaux étaient en pension
chez elle. Elle faisait partie des personnes à l’origine de
l’Association France Arabe Course, l’ancêtre de l’Afac.
La découverte de cet univers et les victoires de Sisinius
nous ont donné l’envie de nous investir plus dans cette
activité. Actuellement, nous avons une petite dizaine de
poulinières, mais elles ne sont pas saillies tous les ans. »
UNE INTUITION GÉNÉALOGIQUE
«  Nous avons commencé en 1987. A cette époque,
il restait moins de dix juments purement française
dans l’hexagone. Dès le départ, nous avons souhaité
mélanger le sang français avec des lignées russes et
polonaises. Nous travaillons encore aujourd’hui avec
cette base. La souche de Nafees remonte à Evita (Pritok),
une jument que nous avions acheté au Danemark dans
les années 1980. Il était peu courant d’aller dans ce
pays pour acheter des chevaux Arabes. Une amie avait
visité un élevage danois. Elle nous avait ramené la liste
des origines de leurs chevaux et celle d’Evita avait
attiré notre attention. Notre motivation était totalement
dirigée par une réflexion sur les pedigrees. Nous ne
savions même pas à quoi la jument ressemblait, mais
nous étions à la recherche de certaines origines Russes
qui étaient elles-mêmes issues de très vieux courants
de sang français exportés dans l’entre-deux-Guerres.
C’est ainsi que nous avons créé nos deux meilleures
familles car ces juments ont particulièrement bien
croisé avec les étalons français. Si les souches russes
et polonaises étaient surtout connues pour le show,
certaines étaient néanmoins intéressantes pour la
course. Elles ont servies de base à l’élevage américain.
L’autre jument marquante de notre élevage, Eliza
(Wist), est née en France de reproducteurs polonais.
Cette dernière est notamment l’aïeule de plusieurs
lauréats de Gr1 PA, comme Simmbad (Njewman) ou
Versac Py (Njewman). Nous avons par la suite acquis
des souches françaises mais c’est véritablement les
familles d’Evita et d’Eliza qui nous ont le mieux réussi.
Au départ, les descendants d’Evita n’étaient pas de
grands chevaux. Mais les conditions d’élevage, et les
croisements successifs avec des étalons français aident,
ils ont pris du volume. Il serait aujourd’hui très difficile
de reproduire ce que nous avions fait il y a quelques
décennies, en partant avec une origine peu connue et
exotique. En effet, la sélection et la qualité des chevaux
ont beaucoup progressé. »
VITELLA, UNE POULICHE SPECTACULAIRE
« Vivamaria (Njewman), la mère de Nafees, est la propre
sœur de Vitella. Cette dernière est certainement le
meilleur cheval de course que nous ayons élevé. Elle était
exceptionnelle. Elle prenait l’avantage avec une grande
facilité, mais le problème, c’est qu’elle avait très souvent
tendance à s’arrêter une fois en tête. C’est ainsi qu’elle
s’est fait battre sur le poteau à plusieurs reprises. Olivier
Trigodet était obligé de la monter à l’arrière-garde pour

up to the last possible moment, and which entailed
hitting the front as late as possible. Despite her
considerable quality, she missed out on a few victories
because of these idiosyncrasies. In the French Arabian
Breeders’ Cup Classic, she dead-heated with Majd
Al Arab (Amer), but the latter was later demoted to
fourth. On her debut at Toulouse, Vitella won by eight
lengths. The impression was such that she received
the applause of the crowd. Vite Amine (Dormane),
the grandam of Nafees, was also very smart. Alas, she
had a niggling tendon problem. That's why her racing
career was cut short. However, the filly was highly
regarded by Robert Litt."
NJEWMAN: AN UNDERRATED STALLION
The dam's sire of Nafees, Njewman (Djourman),
was bred by Yves Plantin. The majority of the quality
winners from this stud are by this stallion. The
breeder elaborated: "Njewman was the brainchild of
Monsieur Jardel. He had leased Nefta (Saint Laurent)
for a season, but the mare remained as part of the
Pompadour broodmare band. The horse was injured
in her youth and was unable to run. Monsieur Jardel
had three sons of Djourman (Manguier) back home.
We were very attracted by the pedigree of Njewman.
Initially, he leased him to us and then we bought him.
It’s certain that we would not have been able to buy
him had he not got injured. We started breeding
him to our mares, and he covered relatively few of
these during his career. In common with his sire in
his day, he was a somewhat underrated stallion.
Despite a numerically reduced production line, he
has managed to yield Gr1 PA winners. Njewman often
produces horses which are endowed with stamina
and good natured. Since his debut at stud in 1999,
Njewman has only managed to produce less than ten
foals per annum (except in 2010). He is nevertheless
the sire of Musharab (Emirates Championship, Gr1
PA); Salaamah (The Emirates Equestrian Federation
International Stakes, Gr2 PA); Simmbad (Abu Dhabi
Hydra Championship, Gr1 PA); Skoop (UAE Arabian
Derby and Arabian Triple Crown Round 3, Grs3 PA);
Spleen (2nd in the Prix Kesberoy and the Qatar French
Arabian Breeders Challenge 3-year-old fillies, Grs1
PA): Swwing (2nd Arabian Triple Crown Round 2 and

Breeder’s Cup Classic, elle fut dead-heat avec Majd Al

quatrième place. Lors de ses premiers pas, à Toulouse,
Vitella avait gagné de huit longueurs. L’impression était
telle qu’elle avait été applaudie par l’assistance. Vite

aussi très bonne. Malheureusement, elle a eu un petit
problème de tendons. C’est la raison pour laquelle sa

qui était très estimée par Robert Litt. »
NJEWMAN, UN ÉTALON SOUS-ESTIMÉ
Le père de mère de Nafees, Njewman (Djourman), a
fait la monte chez Yves Plantin. La majorité des bons
gagnants de cet élevage sont issus de cet étalon.
L’éleveur nous a confié : « Njewman a été conçu par
Monsieur Jardel. Il avait loué le ventre de Nefta (Saint
Laurent) pendant une saison, mais la jument était
restée à la jumenterie de Pompadour. Le cheval s’est
blessé dans sa jeunesse et il n’a pu courir. Monsieur
Jardel avait trois fils de Djourman (Manguier) chez lui.
Nous étions très attirés par le pedigree de Njewman.
Dans un premier temps, il nous l’a prêté et nous
l’avons ensuite acheté. Il est certain que s’il n’avait
pas été accidenté nous n’aurions pas pu l’acquérir. Il a
commencé avec nos juments et a peu saillit pendant
sa carrière. C’est un étalon qui est d’une certaine
manière sous estimé, comme son père en son temps.
Malgré une production numériquement réduite il a
réussi à donner des gagnants de Gr1 PA.  Njewman
donne souvent des chevaux avec une certaine tenue
et un bon caractère. » Depuis ses débuts au haras
en 1999, Njewman n’a pu compter que sur moins
d’une dizaine de produits par an (sauf en 2010).

Pierre-Yves Juillard: « Without him, I would probably
never have dabbled in PA horses »

« I knew Yves Plantin well, both personally and profes-
sionally. I was close to him until the end. Yves began
his career as an art dealer, before deciding to change
his lifestyle by embracing the countryside. Initially, He
bought a property in Poitou, and, then, one day, while
providing his expertise on a house in the Tarn-et-Ga-
ronne region on behalf of a friend, he fell in love with it.
He bought it and subsequently moved from Poitou to
Saint-Hippolyte. In the wake of meeting Jean-Luc Jardel,
he turned his attentions to PA horses. However, I would
never have embraced PA horses had I not met him, and
neither would I have become acquainted the world of
racing, because you need money to do this. I met Yves
20 years ago. He gave me two mares and everything
started from there. Living some 40kms away, I went to his
place because he wanted to entrust me with a mare that
had been injured. The age gap between us was 30 years.
I’ve always been involved with horses, but not racing. I
had been in this sphere for a long time. I agreed to take
the mare but on condition that she be bred to a stallion.
He said that was my decision to a make. We were on
good if more formal terms at the time. When I returned
to see the mare, he and his wife had decided to also en-
trust me with the care of her sister, Elipse (Tidjani), which
was to thank me for having taken-in Keniah (Kesberoy),
who hailed from of his best bloodlines.

« J’ai bien connu Yves Plantin, personnellement comme
professionnellement. J’ai été proche de lui jusqu’à la
fin. Yves a démarré sa carrière comme marchand d’art
avant de décider de changer de vie et de se mettre au
vert. Il a d’abord acheté une propriété dans le Poitou,
puis, un jour, en venant expertiser une maison dans le
Tarn-et-Garonne pour un ami, il en est tombé amou-
reux. Il l’a achetée et a déménagé du Poitou pour venir
s’installer ici à Saint-Hippolyte. En rencontrant Jean-
Luc Jardel, il s’est alors tourné vers le pur-sang arabe.
Mais surtout, sans lui, je n’aurais sans doute jamais
eu de pur-sang arabes et je n’aurais jamais connu le
monde des courses, car il faut notamment de l’argent.
J’ai connu Yves il y a 20 ans. Il m’a donné deux juments
et tout est parti de là. Habitant à 40 km, je me suis
rendu chez lui car il voulait me confier une jument qui
s’était fait mal. Nous avions 30 ans d’écart. J’ai toujours
été dans les chevaux, mais pas de course. Cela faisait
longtemps que j’étais installé. J’ai accepté de prendre
la jument, à condition de la faire saillir. Il m’a dit que
c’était à moi de décider. On se vouvoyait à l’époque.
Quand je suis revenu voir la jument, il avait décidé,
avec sa femme, de me donner également sa sœur,
Elipse (Tidjani), pour me remercier de prendre Keniah
(Kesberoy), qui était une de ses meilleures souches.

He then enquired as to which stallions I wished to
breed to the mares to, and this embarrassed me
because I couldn't afford to pay the various 10,000,
20,000 or 30,000 francs covering fees at the time. He
then told me about his stallion, Njewman. He said
that he would waiver the covering fees (!), and instruc-
ted me to come and collect the mares once they had
tested in- foal. That's quite a story. Although Yves was
a man of few words, and unlike these horse dealers
who talk nonsense...and, to sum up, it’s something of
a fairy tale. However, we didn't really know each other.
So what triggered this sudden rapport of confidence?
As they say in the music world, or art in general terms,
there was probably an affinity between us. Some 28
to 38 days later, here I
am again having availed
myself to my van and my
old pick-up truck in or-
der to transport the two
in-foal mares, complete
with their regal pedigrees
(Kesberoy and Tidjani).
These were my first two
racehorses, and I swear
to that. The mares went
on produce two foals,
and crack performers at
that! One was Versac Py
(Njewman) and the other
was Di Bacco Py (Njewman). The first was one of the
finest performers of his generation in Dubai, and the
latter also proved to be very smart. Second on his
debut at Agen (for the trainer-jockey combination of
Robert Litt and Philippe Sogorb), I subsequently sold
Versac Py to Shadwell which provided me with the
necessary capital to continue my odyssey. The horse
continued his career in Dubai, where he contested
five editions of the Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA), including
one (in 2013) in which he got beaten a short head by
the Jean-François Bernard-trained Al Mamun Monlau
(Munjiz). You can ascertain the quality of the horse.
Alas, Elipse died the following year. Before leaving
his home, I asked him if I could enlist the services of
his trainer, and given that I was tapping into some of
the gene pool of his breeding operation. This was just
to be able to operate on the same wave length. He
replied: « That might be a bit more difficult... » His
trainer was the renowned « Robert » (Litt), with whom
I became friends. During a meeting at Toulouse, I saw
Robert eating. I introduced myself and asked him if
he would like to have me as an owner. He said: «Hello
and no». It was that cut and dry. He was the best PA
trainer at the time. So I went back to Yves to see if he
could swing it for me. He did so, and Robert called me
back, having agreed to train for me. Our team came
into being like this. I wish I had got to know them be-
fore. The experience with Robert Litt was a great one.

Ensuite, il m’a demandé par qui je voulais les faire sail-
lir. J’étais embêté car je n’avais pas les moyens de me
payer des saillies à 10.000, 20.000 ou 30.000 francs
de l’époque. Il m’a alors parlé de son étalon, Njew-
man. Il m’a proposé de les faire saillir gratuitement (!)
et de venir chercher les juments quand elles seraient
pleines. Cela vous pose un homme cette histoire. Et
pourtant, Yves était un homme de peu de mots, pas
comme ces vendeurs de chevaux qui vous racontent
des bêtises… Bref, c’est tout simplement un conte de
fée. Pourtant, nous ne nous connaissions pas. Qu’est-
ce qui a déclenché cette soudaine confiance ? Comme
on dit dans la musique ou dans l’art de manière géné-
rale, sans doute le courant est passé entre nous. Me
voilà reparti 28 ou 38 jours plus tard avec mon van et
mon vieux pick-up, et deux juments pleines aux ori-
gines (Kesberoy et Tidjani) recherchées. Ce sont donc
mes deux premiers chevaux de course, je vous le jure.
Les deux juments poulinent et me font deux chevaux,
deux cracks ! L’un est Versac Py (Njewman) et l’autre Di
Bacco Py (Njewman). Le premier a été l’un des meil-
leurs chevaux de sa génération à Dubaï et le second
a été très fort également. Deuxième pour ses débuts,
à Agen (entraînement Robert Litt, monte Philippe So-
gorb), je vends Versac Py dans la foulée à Shadwell,
ce qui m’a permis d’avoir la trésorerie pour continuer
l’aventure. Le cheval a ensuite continué sa carrière à
Dubaï, où il a disputé cinq Kahayla Classic (Gr1 PA),
dont une (en 2013) où il a été battu d’une courte tête
par Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz), entraîné par Jean-Fran-
çois Bernard. Vous voyez la qualité du cheval. Malheu-
reusement, Elipse est morte l’année d’après. Avant de
repartir de chez lui, j’ai demandé à Yves si je ne pouvais
pas également utiliser les services de son entraîneur,
puisque je partais avec une partie de la génétique de
son élevage. Histoire d’aller dans la continuité. Il m’a
répondu : « Ça, cela risque d’être un peu plus compli-
qué… » Son entraîneur était le fameux «Robert» (Litt),
avec qui je suis devenu copain. Lors d’une réunion à
Toulouse, j’ai vu Robert qui était en train de manger. Je
me suis présenté et je lui ai demandé s’il voulait bien
me prendre pour propriétaire. Il m’a dit : « Bonjour et
non ». C’était clair. Il était le meilleur entraîneur de pur-
sang arabes du moment. Alors je suis retourné auprès
d’Yves, pour voir s’il pouvait m’arranger le coup. Ce
qu’il a fait, Robert me rappelant pour me donner son
accord. Notre équipe a démarré comme cela. J’aurais
aimé les connaître bien plus tôt encore. Ce qu’ils ont
vécu avec Robert Litt, c’est génial. En plus, ce sont
deux taiseux, alors imaginez quand ils étaient à table,
il devait y avoir des blancs (rires). Yves était une per-
sonne très droite, qu’il ne fallait pas décevoir. Il ne
parlait jamais d’argent. Par contre, il avait beaucoup
d’aplomb dans les ventes aux enchères. Comme il était
un bon joueur d’échecs, c’était quelqu’un de réfléchi
et il savait très vite quel type d’enchérisseur il avait en
face de lui. Il a toujours eu gain de cause d’ailleurs.

Besides, these are two taciturn individuals, and so
you can imagine when they were seated down at
the table [for a meal], for there must have been pe-
riods of silence (chuckling). A very straight person in
his dealings, Yves wasn’t the sort of person who you
set out to dupe. He never talked about money. On
the other hand, he was a very good operator at sales
where horses were auctioned publicly. As he was a
good chess player, and very much a calculator, he very
quickly cottoned on to what kind of bidder he had in
front of him. So he invariably came out on top at the
sales. Keniah was responsible for the fact that money
never governed our relationship. I always gave him a
helping hand, but without asking for anything in re-
turn. I invariably helped him whenever he needed so-
mething (such as sourcing a tractor or hay and organi-
sing his sales...) and being primarily of peasant stock,
and one that entrusted his horses to Robert [Litt].., a
real rapport began between a young son of the soil
and a man who became one of the best breeders of
PA horses, and this despite the fact that he knew no-
thing about them at the beginning. However, he was a
great lover of genetics. A great researcher, he always
had plans. It’s rare for a young man of peasant stock
and a person, hailing from a different background
prior to going into racing, to hook up in this way. It's
a bit like a country garage owner, who tinkers with his
205 GTI and meets a Formula 1, or rally driver cham-
pion, who then says, come to my garage, and I'll gift
you two engines. That doesn't happen every day. He
then introduced me to Robert Litt and his family, and
Philippe Sogorb with whom I became close. Robert
also entrusted me with the care of his breeding stock.
It's something really rare. I’ve reached the age of 56
and am involved exclusively with PA horses. That I’ve
continued to progress, and have also forged a repu-
tation internationally, is thanks to the success of my
mares ; progeny, and it’s down to him. Keniah suffered
from a minor ailment and the mare could have been a
poisoned chalice, but’s she still alive at the age of 22,
and three of her daughters have been drafted into my
broodmare band. My method of breeding and rearing
horses is very different to his one. It's not as if he
taught me how to breed horses, but if you factor out
his genetic base, and further remove him and Ro-
bert from the equation, I would never have succee-
ded. Some might say that I could have gone out and
bought a mare. That’s except for the fact that I didn't
have the money or the network to do this. I had just
bought my farm and was more involved with show
ponies. I was a 30-years-old at the time and it was
no easy matter for me. Given the same gene pool as
his one, I have developed the horses in my own way.
Moreover, I had Keniah’s portrait painted by Claudia
Duffé at Royan. Yves had a rich heritage in terms of
the culture of the art world, and he really liked the
painting. This painting is still a link between us.

Du fait de Keniah, nous n’avons jamais eu de rapports
d’argent. Je lui ai toujours rendu service, sans rien
demander. Je le dépannais dès qu’il en avait besoin
(trouver un tracteur, du foin, organiser ses ventes…)
car je suis avant tout un paysan et j’ai confié mes che-
vaux à Robert. Une vraie histoire a commencé entre
un jeune paysan et un homme qui est devenu l’un des
meilleurs éleveurs de pur-sang arabes alors qu’il n’y
connaissait rien au départ. Mais c’était un grand pas-
sionné de génétique. Un grand chercheur, qui avait
toujours des projets. Il est rare qu’un jeune paysan et
une personne qui a eu une autre vie avant les courses
se rencontrent. C’est un peu comme un garagiste de
campagne qui bricole sa 205 GTI et qui rencontre un
champion de Formule 1 ou de rallye qui lui dit «viens
dans mon garage, je vais te donner deux moteurs».
Cela n’arrive pas tous les jours. Il m’a fait ensuite
rencontrer Robert Litt et sa famille, Philippe Sogorb,
avec qui je suis devenu proche. Robert a d’ailleurs
mis ses chevaux pour l’élevage chez moi. C’est vrai-
ment quelque chose de peu commun. J’ai aujourd’hui
56 ans et je ne m’occupe que de chevaux arabes de
course. J’ai continué à avancer grâce à lui, à me faire
connaître à l’étranger avec la réussite des produits de
mes juments. Keniah, qui avait eu un petit souci et
qui aurait pu être un cadeau empoisonné, est toujours
vivante à 22ans et a trois filles qui sont poulinières
chez moi. Ma méthode d’élevage et d’éducation des
chevaux n’est pas du tout la même que lui. Ce n’est
pas comme s’il m’avait appris à élever des chevaux,
mais sans sa génétique, sans lui et Robert, je n’aurais
jamais fait cela. On pourrait me répondre que j’au-
rais pu aller acheter une jument. Sauf que je n’avais
ni l’argent, ni le réseau. Je venais d’acheter ma ferme
et je m’occupais plus de poneys de concours. J’avais
30 ans à l’époque et ce n’était plus facile pour moi.
Avec la même génétique que lui, j’ai fait évoluer les
chevaux à ma façon. D’ailleurs, j’ai fait peindre Keniah
par Claudia Duffé, à Royan. Yves était riche d’une
culture artistique et avait trouvé le tableau très beau.
Ce tableau, c’est encore un lien entre nous. Cinq jours
avant de mourir, je l’ai appelé car je le savais en sursis
et je lui ai parlé de sa pouliche qui débutait en compé-
tition le 13 juillet dernier, Sphère (Njewman). Il m’a ré-
pondu et m’a dit : « Attend le 13, ce n’est pas sûr que
je sois là. Ce serait mieux que tu me représentes. »
Voilà encore un lien entre nous deux. Il ne lui reste que
deux chevaux d’ailleurs. La pouliche, donc, et Aligar

de cela mais c’est la vie. Enfin, autre signe du destin,
Yves m’avait confié trois chevaux de son élevage qui
étaient chez Philippe Sogorb et qu’il fallait réformer. Il
y avait deux hongres et une femelle. Il m’a demandé
de tenter de commercialiser dans une autre discipline
les hongres et m’a confié la femelle, qui s’appelle
Spelea (Njewman) et qui va bientôt pouliner, dans six mois.
Tribute
Five days before he died, I called him because I knew
he was living on borrowed time, and informed him
about his unraced filly who was going to make her de-
but on 13 July, Sphere (Njewman). He replied: « Hold
fire until the 13th as it's not sure I'll be around. It would
be better if you represented me. » Here is yet another
link which binds the two of us. He only had two horses
to his name. That is the above filly and the unraced
debutant Aligar (Snoopi), who is due to race at Dax on
August 1 in the same heat as one of my horses. It sends
shivers down my spine when talking about it but that's
life. The hand of destiny also manifested itself for a final
time, as Yves had entrusted me with three horses from
his stud, which were with Philippe Sogorb, but which
needed to embrace different pathways.
They were two geldings and a filly. He
asked me to try to upgrade the geldings
commercially by embracing other disci-
plines, and entrusted me with the in-foal
mare Spelea (Njewman), and who is due
to foal in six months’ time. You can't say
that he gave me a last gift, because we
never talked about it, but it must be seen
as a sign. It was out of the question that
that the five-year-old Spelea would go to
the sales. I’ve also taken charge of the
six-year-old mare Ammeria (Njewman).
Again, he asked me to which stallion was
I going to breed her to. She will remain
at home with me and there’s no question of me selling
them. Even after his death, something of Yves will re-
main with me... »
Robert Litt : « A very straight person in his dealings »
Jockey turned trainer
« I’ve worked with him since 1987. We had a good
rapport. I've [trained] all his horses. We did everything
together. He was a straight person in his dealings, and
we never had any problems. We got along…(silence).
It was a real pleasure to work for him. Every year I was
given his home-breds to train. We had some great per-
formers in the mould of Quazar (Djelfor), and a winner
at Deauville and Newmarket, before being sold for very
good money; we trained Vitella (Njewman) to win the
French Arabian Breeders ; Cup Classic at Toulouse;and
there was also the Deauville winner Simmbad (Njew-
man (who beating a certain Lahib!). There have been so
many. It's all in the past now… We met through racing.
There were very few races for PA horses in 1987. When I
started training, I was lucky enough to be entrusted with
Tout An Khan (Dahman El Arami), bred by Monsieur Di
Francesco, and a winner on top of that, From then on,
Yves Plantin entrusted me with a horse, Walid Al Dunixi
(Dunixi), who had every fault imaginable (chuckling) but
who did very well on the racecourse (the winner of the
Critérium des 3 ans and Prix Denouste among others).

On ne peut pas dire qu’il m’a fait un dernier cadeau,
car on n’en a jamais parlé, mais il faut y voir comme

5ans, parte dans une vente. J’ai également récupéré

va rester à la maison et interdiction pour moi de les
vendre. Même après sa mort, il restera quelque chose
d’Yves chez moi… »

«  J’ai travaillé avec lui depuis 1987. Nous avons eu
une bonne collaboration. J’ai eu tous ses
chevaux. Nous avons tout fait ensemble.
C’était une personne droite et nous
n’avons jamais eu le moindre problème
tous les deux. On s’entendait…(silence).
Ce fut un véritable plaisir de travailler
avec lui. Tous les ans, j’avais des chevaux
de son élevage. On en a eu de supers
comme Quazar (Djelfor) qui a gagné à
Deauville, à Newmarket, et qui a fait en-
suite une super vente, Vitella (Njewman),
avec qui on a gagné la French Arabian
Breeders’ Cup Classic à Toulouse, Sim-
mbad (Njewman), victorieux à Deauville
(devant un certain Lahib !). Il y en a eu
tellement. C’est désormais du passé… Nous nous
sommes connus par les courses. En 1987, il y avait très
peu d’épreuves pour les pur-sang arabes. Alors que

entre autres). Il galopait ! C’est comme cela que tout a
démarré avec lui et qu’il m’a confié ses chevaux. Nous
avons gardé une relation jusqu’au bout. D’ailleurs, c’est
un peu à cause de lui que je fais de l’élevage désor-
mais, alors que j’ai arrêté d’entraîner (rires). Aupara-
vant, il m’avait fait entrer au Conseil d’administration
de l’Afac, dont il était le président et pour laquelle il a
fait beaucoup. En 2011, alors que j’ai arrêté mon mé-
tier d’entraîneur, j’ai décidé d’acheter une jument pour
commencer à élever. Elle provenait de mon entraîne-
ment et le propriétaire cherchait à s’en séparer. C’est
Salma Thabeth (Dormane), qui s’avère bien produire et
dont j’ai gardé des filles. On s’amuse un peu. Mais c’est
vraiment M. Yves Plantin qui m’a mis le pied à l’étrier
concernant cette activité. »
Tribute
He could gallop! That's how the seeds were sown as he
entrusted me with his horses. Our relationship lasted
until the very end. In fact, it's partly down to him that
I'm now breeding horses even though I've stopped
training (chuckling). Before that, he saw to it that I be-
came part of the executive board of AFAC, of which he
was the president, and for which he did a lot. In 2011,
having stopped training, I decided to buy a mare in
order to start breeding. She hailed from my yard, and
the owner was looking to sell her on. She was Salma
Thabeth (Dormane), who proved out to be a good pro-
ducer, and whose daughters I have retained. We have a
bit of fun. However, it was really Monsieur Yves Plantin
who got me started in this business. »

« I was a jockey with Robert Litt, who was the trainer
of Monsieur Yves Plantin, and I rode a number of his
horses. When Robert retired, I set up as a trainer and
Monsieur Plantin gave me all his horses to train. It was
a logical progression. Extremely kind, he really un-
derstood horses and the problems which bedevil them.
He was an exceptional owner, and one that any trainer
would dream of having. I won some top races for him,
and did well when it came to selling the horses on. Ours
was a fruitful and harmonious partnership. His memory
will stay with me because he was a really good person."

the PA sector in the 1990s»

« I knew Yves Plantin very well from the 1986-1987 pe-
riod. We started out by dabbling in PA horses together
on the show ring circuit. Yves Plantin was an art dealer
when he was younger, He started out by breeding
Siamese cats of which he was very fond. Subsequently,
he very quickly developed an affinity for the PA horse.
He acquired a property in the Tarn-et-Garonne re-
gion, and over a period of two to three years, he en-
deavoured to breed Arabian show horses. He deve-
loped an interest in Arabian racehorses in 1988. At that
time, I had set-up the ACA (Association d’Eleveurs de
Chevaux Arabes pur-sang et demi-sang) Racing Com-
mission, with the aim of overseeing [PA] racing in France
(as there was very little for the breed at that time). He
was one of its first members. This commission was in
charge of promoting PA racing and identifying inco-
me streams. In 1998, this commission became AFAC
(Association Francaise du Cheval Arabe de Course).
We both endeavoured to develop this sector because,
in the 1990s, money was hard to come by. We em-
braced self-financing initiatives for certain events, and
worked hard to get France Galop to provide more help.

« J’ai été jockey chez Robert Litt, qui était l’entraîneur
de monsieur Yves Plantin, et j’ai donc monté un cer-
tain nombre de ses chevaux. Quand Robert a pris sa
retraite, je venais de m’installer comme entraîneur et
monsieur Plantin m’a confié tous ses chevaux à l’en-
traînement. C’était une suite logique. Il était d’une
extrême gentillesse, comprenait vraiment les chevaux
et les problèmes inhérents à ces animaux. C’était un
propriétaire exceptionnel, comme n’importe quel en-
traîneur rêve d’en avoir. J’ai gagné de belles courses
pour lui, fait de belles ventes également. Nous avons
eu une collaboration fructueuse et harmonieuse. Son
souvenir restera en moi car c’était vraiment une bonne
personne.
Jean-Luc Jardel : « Nous avons tous les deux œuvré au
développement de la filière car dans les années 90 »

«  Je connaissais très bien Yves Plantin depuis les an-
nées 1986-1987. Nous avons commencé dans le pur-
sang arabe ensemble, d’abord dans le show. Plus
jeune, Yves Plantin a été marchand d’art. Il a com-
mencé dans l’élevage… de chats siamois dont il était
très amateur. Très vite ensuite, il a eu envie de che-
vaux arabes. Il a acheté une propriété dans le Tarn-et-
Garonne et il a essayé, pendant deux ans, trois ans,
d’élever des chevaux arabes de show. En 1988, il s’est
intéressé au cheval arabe de course. À cette époque,
j’avais créé la commission des courses de l’ACA pour
s’occuper des courses en France (il y en avait très peu
pour cette race à ce moment-là). Il a été l’un des pre-
miers adhérents. Cette commission s’est occupée de
promouvoir les courses de pur-sang arabes et de trou-
ver des financements. En 1998, cette commission est
devenue l’Afac. Nous avons donc, tous les deux, œuvré
au développement de la filière car, dans les années
90, il n’y avait pas beaucoup de moyens. Nous avons
fait de l’auto-financement pour certaines épreuves et
beaucoup travaillé pour que France Galop nous aide
plus. Tout cela, jusqu’à ce que les pays arabes du Golfe
persique, ne viennent apporter leur sponsoring. Nous
avons désormais un programme bien plus conséquent.
Nous nous sommes donc connus chez Renée-Laure
Koch, car nous avions des chevaux de show chez elle.
Elle aussi était dans le show et les anglo-arabes. La
discipline du show étant aléatoire, nous nous sommes
tous tournés vers le pur-sang arabe de course, car
c’est une compétition où le meilleur arrive premier (les
chevaux ne sont pas soumis aux juges, comme dans
le show). Physiquement, ce ne sont pas les mêmes
chevaux non plus. Il y a eu des exagérations dans le
show, avec parfois des chevaux presque infirmes.

That was until the Arab countries, which comprise
the Persian Gulf states, provided us with sponsorship.
We now have a far more substantial racing calendar.
We met at Renée-Laure Koch's stud because we
boarded show horses at her place. As well as show
horses, she was also involved with Anglo-Arabians. As
the show discipline was an uncertain environment, we
turned our attentions en bloc to the PA horse, as it’s a
form of competition where the best horses come first
(as the horses aren’t subjected to the judges’scorecards
as in the show ring). Physically speaking, they are also
different types of horses either. There have been ex-
cesses in the show arena, which have sometimes almost
crippled horses. Yves Plantin therefore bought mares
with French pedigree pages (as they were more suited
to racing), and so his breeding operation began. He
based his breeding on daughters of Nevada II (Djanor),
such as Nanou (Ourour). He then crossed them with
Russian bloodlines. Ours was a friendly relationship, as
were almost neighbours, given that I, too, was living in
the Tarn-et-Garonne region. I had had him on the phone
again about ten days ago. We often visited each other.
All subjects were up for discussion, and not just bree-
ding. We made a lot of trips together, such as our visit
to the Sultanate of Oman, the meetings at IFAHR (Inter-
national Federation of Arabian Horse Racing), where he
was also a member, and we also went racing together.
We acquired his mares together. I also sold him [a mare]
that would later produce his stallion, Njewman (Djour-
man). Indeed, I had leased the latter's dam, Nefta (Saint
Laurent) to the Haras de Pompadour, Unfortunately, her
son Njewman met with an accident and never raced.
Given that I already owned his three-parts brother,
Tornado de Syrah (Djourman), I sold him Njewman. The
latter was a firm fixture with him for quite some time. His
was a regal French pedigree. I will always recall him as a
cultured man, with whom I enjoyed conversing. He was
very passionate about the arts, which was his very first
profession. He was a good man. »

dour. Malheureusement, son produit, Njewman s’est
accidenté et n’a jamais pu courir. Comme j’avais son
trois quarts frère, Tornado de Syrah (Djourman), je lui
ai vendu Njewman. Il s’est servi de ce dernier pendant
pas mal de temps. C’était une belle origine française.
Je garderai le souvenir d’un homme cultivé, avec qui
j’aimais bien discuter. Il était très passionné par les arts,
son premier métier. Un homme bien. »

SOKO CONSERVE SA COURONNE
He did it! After making all to land the 2021 edition
of the Doha Cup - Prix Manganate (Gr1 PA), Soko
(Nieshan) repeated that success in 2022! The least
we can say is that those same tactics didn’t go by
the wayside, with the horse recording a pillar to post
victory in a style which speaks to the best horses... The
Royal Stables of Oman representative is now expected
to head directly to the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1
PA) on October 2nd at ParisLongchamp. After rapidly
making a beeline for the lead under jockey Cristian
Demuro, Soko dictated terms, and was a length clear of
his nearest rival. After racing in the wake of the leader,
the race set up ideally for Abbes (TM Fred Texas). After
delivering his challenge on the outside of Soko at the
beginning of straight, he tried in vain to wear that rival
down. A tough sort, Soko cocked a snook at that rival.
Unable to make an impression, Abbes went down by
half a length. A length further away, the 9-year-old
Ebraz (Amer) made a promising return in third.
AS TOUGH AS TEAK!
After beginning his career with trainer Olivier
Trigodet, for whom he gained his initial success in
the Prix Manganate, Soko switched from racing in the
colours of Helal Alalawi to those of the Royal Stables
of Oman. Since joining the yard of Madame Jean-
François Bernard, Soko was coming off a victorious
return (July 6th) at La Teste, where he won the Coupe
du Sud-Ouest des Pur-Sang Arabes (Gr3 PA). On
returning to the weighing in enclosure, the La Teste-
based trainer opined: "The challenge of retaining
one's crown is never easy to achieve! So much
happens from one year to the next... Soko has a few
miles on the clock: as he has travelled a lot, which has
entailed racing in different countries and climates!

Il l'a fait ! Lauréat de bout en bout en 2021 de la Doha
Cup Prix Manganate (Gr1 PA), Soko (Nieshan) a remis le
couvert en 2022 ! Et le moins que l'on puisse dire, c'est
qu'il ne s'est pas embarrassé de tactique comme lors de
son précédent succès, puisqu'il a gagné de bout en bout
à la manière des forts... Le représentant des écuries royales
d'Oman devrait désormais être revu directement au départ
de la Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA), le 2 octobre à
Longchamp. Rapidement porté en tête de course par
son jockey, Cristian Demuro, Soko a animé l'épreuve avec
une franche longueur d'avance sur ses rivaux. Placé dans
son sillage, Abbes (TM Fred Texas) a pu bénéficier d'une
course sur mesure. Décalé du sillage de Soko à l'entrée de
la dernière ligne droite, il a tenté de revenir sur lui, en vain.
En poulain dur, Soko est reparti au nez et à la barbe de
son rival. Ne pouvant rien faire, Abbes s'incline finalement
d'une demi-longueur. Du haut de ses 9ans, le rentrant
Ebraz (Amer) effectue un retour prometteur en prenant la
troisième place, une franche longueur plus loin.
DUR COMME LA PIERRE !
Après avoir débuté sa carrière sous l'entraînement
d'Olivier Trigodet, pour lequel il avait remporté son
premier Prix Manganate, Soko était passé des couleurs
d'Helal Alalawi à celles des écuries royales d'Oman.
Rejoignant ainsi l'entraînement de madame Jean-
François Bernard, Soko venait d'effectuer une course de
rentrée victorieuse, le 6 juillet à La Teste, dans la Coupe
du Sud-Ouest des Pur-Sang Arabes (Gr3 PA). De retour
aux balances, l'entraîneur basée à La Teste a confié au
sujet de son pensionnaire : « Le challenge qui consiste
à conserver sa couronne n'est jamais simple à réaliser !
Il se passe tellement de choses d'une année à l'autre…
Soko a quand même quelques kilomètres au compteur
: il a beaucoup voyagé, changé de pays et de climats !

Only a champion can withstand such a degree of
change like that. Abbes is a great hold-up horse.
Olivier Peslier, his jockey, knows him well and he based
his tactics around those deployed by Soko. However,
his mount came up against an immovable object!
Regarding his next start, Soko will be seen out in the
Qatar Arabian World Cup... Then he will return to the
United Arab Emirates where he will join trainer Helal
Alalawi... That’s sad for me (chuckling)!"
ABBES WASN’T SHARP ENOUGH
As a 4-year-old, Abbes won the UK Arabian Derby, and
he performed creditably when pitted against the best
older horses of in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Grs1
PA). He spent the winter in Doha, where he was second
in the Emir Sword, before winning
the consolation race, the Qatar
Gold Sword (Grs1 PA). Second
to Soko on his reappearance in
this renewal of the Doha Cup, he
slightly disappointed his trainer,
Thomas Fourcy. He said: "He wasn't
particularly wound up for this race,
but I expected him to show sharper
powers of acceleration. Having
come to win his race, he ended up
by keeping the future winner up to his task. His target is
the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA). It remains to be
seen if he will contest the 'Prix Dragon' before then."
EBRAZ IS STILL AT THE TOP OF HIS GAME AT THE
AGE OF NINE! Ebraz had just transferred to the stable
of François Rohaut. After being campaigned at the
highest level for over six seasons, he made his return
on this card. Bertrand Le Métayer, the Al Shahania
representative, said: "He ran superbly after an absence
of 171 days. As a 9-year-old, he still continues to show a
lot of appetite for the fray. He wasn't even blowing after
the race! He will probably head straight to the Qatar
Arabian World Cup. We decided to split those horses
coming to race in Europe this year among our different
French trainers, rather than dispatching our Qatari team
[to Europe]. It's easier from a logistical viewpoint."
NIESHAN SIRES HIS SECOND GR1 PA WINNER
Soko showcased the breeding establishment of Jean-
Luc Jardel. He is the second Gr1 PA winner sired by
Nieshan (Akbar) after Hadi de Carrère (Nieshan). This
stallion is based at the Haras de Carrère, near Toulouse.
Two other members of his progeny (Penny and Izmir de
Carrère) have achieved podium finishes at Gr1 PA level.
The dam, Saka (Tornado de Syrah) made no
impression on her two racecourse starts. Soko is
her third winner, with the latter having followed in
the hoofprints of Sia (Akbar), a winner in France
and the Netherlands, and Shen (Meliar Halab).
The latter won an amateurs’ race.

entraîné par Helal Alalawi… Malheureusement pour
moi (rires) ! »
ABBES N'ÉTAIT PAS ASSEZ AFFÛTÉ
À 4ans, Abbes a remporté l'UK Arabian Derby et s'est
bien comporté, face aux meilleurs chevaux d'âge, dans
la Qatar Arabian World Cup (Grs1 PA). Cet hiver, à
Doha, il s'est classé deuxième de l'Emir Sword avant de
remporter la consolante, la Qatar
Gold Sword (Grs1 PA). Deuxième
de Soko pour sa réapparition dans
cette Doha Cup, il a toutefois
légèrement déçu son entraîneur,
Thomas Fourcy, qui nous a confié :
« Il n'était pas spécialement
affûté pour cette course, mais je
m'attendais à le voir accélérer
plus fort. Il est venu comme pour
gagner mais n'a fait que pousser
le futur lauréat. Son objectif est la Qatar Arabian
World Cup (Gr1 PA). À voir s'il courra le "Dragon" au
préalable. »
EBRAZ TOUJOURS AU TOP À 9ANS !
Ebraz venait d'être transféré dans les boxes de
François Rohaut. Au plus haut niveau depuis plus de
six ans, il effectuait sa rentrée. Bertrand Le Métayer, le
représentant d'Al Shahania, a confié : « Il court super
après 171 jours d'absence. À 9ans, il montre encore
qu'il a de l'envie. Il ne soufflait même pas après la
course ! Il devrait vraisemblablement aller directement

LE DEUXIÈME GAGNANT DE GR1 DE NIESHAN
Soko met à l'honneur l'élevage de Jean-Luc Jardel.
C'est le deuxième gagnant de Gr1 de Nieshan (Akbar)
après Hadi de Carrère (Nieshan). Cet étalon est
stationné au haras de Carrère, près de Toulouse. Deux
autres de ses produits (Penny et Izmir de Carrère) sont
montés sur le podium au niveau Gr1 PA. La mère, Saka
(Tornado de Syrah), a couru deux fois sans succès. Soko
est son troisième gagnant après Sia (Akbar), lauréate

The grandam, Sainte Lucie (Dormane), failed to trouble
the judge in two racecourse attempts. None of her
five foals to have raced in France have managed a win
between them. The great grandam produced Jalnar Al
Khalidiah (Tiwaiq), the winner of the Prix Manganate at
Deauville, and second in the Arabian World Cup (Grs1
PA). At stud, Jalnar Al Khalidiah has produced top class
PA horses. This is the line of Jarnin (Akbar), who won the
Prix du Président des UAE at Deauville, plus the H.H.
The President Cup (Grs1 PA) at Abu Dhabi. This is one of
one of the lines which trace back to Nevada II (Djanor).
La deuxième mère, Sainte Lucie (Dormane), a couru
deux fois sans succès. Elle a eu cinq partants en France

AL GHADEER HAS A GOLDEN FUTURE AHEAD OF HIM
L’AVENIR DORÉ D’AL GHADEER
Damien de Watrigant, the former trainer of Al
Ghadeer (Al Mourtajez), had made it known for some
time now that he had “unearthed” an extraordinary
3-year-old talent. Consequently, he chose a PA Group
race for the colt’s racecourse introduction. In the Royal
Cavalry of Oman - Prix Tidjani (Gr3 PA), the Mohammed
Al Nujaifi homebred was second to Joe Star (Al
Mourtajez). Based on that positive display, Al Ghadeer
was bought by Al Wasmiyah Racing who entrusted
him to the care of François Rohaut. At Deauville,
which marked his second career outing, Al Ghadeer
dominated proceedings after leaving Joe Star five
and a half lengths in his wake. The horse also became
acquainted with the race riding style of Christophe
Soumillon. Slowly into his stride, the horse found himself
towards the rear. After making headway along the rails
down the backstretch, he found himself within striking
distance of the leader Obaid (Rabbah de Carrère).
Cruising into the lead at the entrance of the straight, Al
Ghadeer toyed with his rivals after showing a neat turn
of foot. He proved to be in a league of his own. After
chasing home his rival, Joe Star was unable to confirm a
prior win over Al Ghadeer, but his was a creditable and
clear second place. A distant third, Monaasib (Dahess)
took minor honours. After sending out the 2021 winner
of the Al Rayyan Cup - Prix Kesberoy (Gr1 PA), the Pau-
based trainer Francois Rohaut not only retained his
crown, but he also had some flattering words to say
about his charge’s victory and he opined: "Al Ghadeer
is still immature: he had only run once before this race.
He still has a lot to learn. In the future, as he matures,
he will become something of a jet-plane!"

Damien de Watrigant, le premier entraîneur d’Al
Ghadeer (Al Mourtajez), annonçait de longue date
avoir "touché" un 3ans hors du commun. Au point
de le faire débuter directement au niveau Groupe.
Dans le Royal Cavalry Oman - Prix Tidjani (Gr3 PA),
l’élève de Mohammed Al Nujaifi s’est ainsi classé
deuxième de Joe Star (Al Mourtajez). Sur la foi de cette
bonne performance, Al Ghadeer a été acheté par Al
Wasmiyah Racing qui l’a confié à François Rohaut. À
Deauville, lors de la deuxième sortie commune, Al
Ghadeer a survolé les débats et a devancé Joe Star
de cinq longueurs et demie. À Deauville, il découvrait
la monte de Christophe Soumillon en compétition.
Pas bien sorti de sa stalle, il s'est retrouvé parmi les
derniers. Rapproché le long de la corde dans la ligne
d'en face, Al Ghadeer a finalement pu se positionner
juste derrière l'animateur, Obaid (Rabbah de Carrère).
Prenant ensuite facilement l'avantage à l'entrée de la
dernière ligne droite, Al Ghadeer n'a jamais rencontré
d'opposition et a déployé de superbes foulées. Il
s'impose finalement de toute une classe. Derrière lui,
Joe Star n'a pu devancer à nouveau son contemporain,
mais il obtient une probante et aisée deuxième place.
Dans le lointain, Monaasib (Dahess) est troisième.
Tenant du titre de l'Al Rayyan Cup - Prix Kesberoy
(Gr1 PA), le Palois François Rohaut a non seulement
conservé sa couronne mais également tenu des propos
élogieux suite à la victoire de son pensionnaire  :
«  Al Ghadeer est encore immature : il n'avait couru
qu'une seule fois avant cette course. Et il a encore
beaucoup à apprendre. À l'avenir, en prenant de la
maturité, cela va devenir un zinc ! »

A PHYSICALLY IMPRESSIVE SPECIMEN
Al Ghadeer should have kick-started his career
at Chantilly on June 23rd in the Qatar Coupe de
France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr2 PA). Eventually
withdrawn for administrative reasons, he made his
official racecourse debut in the colours of Al Nujaifi
Racing Ltd at La Teste on July 14th. Al Ghadeer
quickly showed signs of obvious ability, having
only got beaten by three-parts of a length by Joe
Star. In the aftermath, François Rohaut added: "Al
Ghadeer made a very good debut, which is why his
current owners, Al Wasmiyah Racing, wanted to buy
the colt. He joined the yard only
three weeks ago, and I’m happy
to continue the work undertaken
by his former trainer Damien de
Watrigant. He made him the colt
what he is today. I’m just reaping
the rewards of his labour..." Paul
Basquin, having acquired Al
Ghadeer for Al Wasmiyah Racing,
took the opportunity to elaborate
on the colt and said: "Al Ghadeer is a physically
impressive colt. He’s compact, thick-set and strong.
His acceleration today was incredible. In addition to
having purchased Al Ghadeer, my concern, Saubouas
Bloodtsock, also acquired the second, Joe Star...
However, they are very different physical specimens.
I would also take this opportunity to congratulate Al
Shaqab Racing! As Al Mourtajez (Dahess) appeals
as a really promising sire. Lastly, I would also like to
congratulate the breeders of the first and second, as
they’ve done a remarkable job."
SAINT-CLOUD IS THE DESTINATION OF JOE STAR
Joe Star, the Helal Alalawi representative, lost no caste
in following his second place. In doing so, he sealed
his passage for the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains
(Gr1 PA). His trainer, Thomas Fourcy, said: "My colt is
still immature and he needs a strong gallop to fulfil
his potential. In common with his sire, he will improve
in time. The winner is certainly more precocious and
has a sharper turn of foot, whereas my horse rumbles
along using his raking stride. I'm not changing my
plans, as he'll head to Gr1 PA prize at Saint-Cloud on
the eve of the Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1)
weekend."
OUT OF MARE WHO WON AS A JUVENILE!
Bred in France by the Iraqi national Mohammad Al Najafi,
Al Ghadeer is a son of Al Mourtajez (Dahess), who enjoys
the reputation of being the Frankel (Galileo) of the PA
world. He has already sired two PA Group winners, and
four of his progeny have picked up black type among his
first crop of PA 3-year-olds (from a total of 12 runners).
His dam, Gharraa (Matador 12), was a very classy mare,
having won the Critérium des Pouliches (Gr2 PA), and
distinguished herself at the highest level in Turkey.

IMPRESSIONNANT PHYSIQUEMENT
Al Ghadeer aurait dû entamer sa carrière à Chantilly, le 23
juin, dans la Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes
(Gr2 PA). Finalement forfait pour cause administrative,
il a donc effectué ses débuts officiels sous les couleurs
d'Al Nujaifi Racing, le 14 juillet à La Teste. Montrant
rapidement d'évidents moyens, Al Ghadeer échouait à
seulement trois quarts de longueur de Joe Star. Après la
course, François Rohaut a ajouté : « Al Ghadeer avait très
bien débuté, c'est pour cette raison que ses nouveaux
propriétaires, Al Wasmiyah Racing, ont souhaité acheter
le poulain. Je l'ai reçu il y a seulement trois semaines,
donc je me contente de poursuivre
le travail réalisé par Damien de
Watrigant, son ancien entraîneur. Ce
dernier a fait de lui le poulain qu'il
est aujourd'hui. Je récolte juste les
fruits de son travail… » Paul Basquin,
qui a acheté Al Ghadeer pour le
compte d'Al Wasmiyah Racing, en
a profité pour raconter l'histoire du
poulain : « Al Ghadeer est un poulain
physiquement impressionnant. Il est compact, épais et
solide. Aujourd'hui, son accélération a été incroyable.
En plus d'avoir fait acheter Al Ghadeer, mon entité,
Saubouas Bloodstock, a également fait acheter le
deuxième, Joe Star… Toutefois, les deux premiers sont
physiquement différents. J'en profite également pour
féliciter Al Shaqab Racing ! Le père des deux chevaux,
Al Mourtajez (Dahess), s'annonce vraiment comme un
étalon prometteur. Et, pour finir, je tiens également à
féliciter les éleveurs des deux premiers, lesquels réalisent
un travail remarquable. »
DIRECTION SAINT-CLOUD POUR JOE STAR
Joe Star, représentant d'Helal Alalawi, n'a pas à
rougir de cette deuxième place. Il valide son ticket
pour le Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA).
Son entraîneur, Thomas Fourcy, nous a déclaré :
« Mon poulain est encore immature et il a besoin
d'une course rythmée pour exprimer son potentiel.
Aujourd'hui, il a tiré. Comme son père, il va venir avec
le temps. Le gagnant est certainement plus précoce et
est capable d'accélérer plus brutalement, alors que le
mien doit enrouler avec sa grande action. Je ne change
pas mes plans : il ira sur le Gr1 à Saint-Cloud la veille du
week-end du Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1). »

ranging from 1,400m to 1,600 at the outset of her
career in Iraq. Gharraa has already produced Durat Al
Zaman (Hilal Al Zaman), the Qatar Arabian Trophy des
Juments (4-year-old fillies, Gr1 PA) fourth. Above all,
she has forged her reputation in the paddocks as the
dam of Ghurat Al Zaman (Hilal Al Zaman). The latter
won the Prix Damas (Gr3 PA) and the Qatar Prix de
l'Élevage (Gr2 PA). After producing a foal by Hilal Al
Zaman, Gharraa was bred to Mister Ginoux (Amer).
The grandam yielded Al Harith (Asad Saif), the Zaabeel
International Stakes (Gr1 PA) third at Newbury, plus the
Iraqi 2,000 Guineas victor, Laith (Al Yaboob), who was
the top PA Iraqi colt of his generation.

In the absence of Lady Princess (General), the
number two in the pecking order of the PA fillies/mares’
division, Teema (Bibi de Carrère), was a very warm order
in the Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Liwa International
Stakes (Gr1 PA). However, she had her thunder stolen
by her stablemate Elaf (Rabbah de Carrère). This
enabled Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte to complete a 1-2
in this Gr1 PA Group race via a pair of runners which
race in the colours of the race sponsor, Sheikh Mansoor
Bin Zayed Al Nayhan (Yas Horse Racing)…
FROM PILLAR TO POST
All the riders in the race reined back their mounts in the
early stages, as Elaf assumed the initiative by dictating
the pace. The five-strong peloton subsequently
proceeded to race in Indian file, with the hot favourite
Teema travelling in the slipstream of the future winner.
In the straight, Anthony Crastus kicked for home early
on Elaf, and the filly gave generously of herself. Fitted
with blinkers, she recorded her first Gr1 PA win. Teema,
already a winner at this level, was beaten a length and a
half into second. Rysk Tout, a further five lengths adrift
in third, earned some black type.
A XAVIER THOMAS-DEMEAULTE 1-2
A few hours after the race, the trainer from Mont-
de-Marsan said: "Elaf was very courageous. When
Anthony Crastus asked the filly to pick up, she did so
in a way that she hadn’t done before. I’m very happy
with the way it panned out for my two runners. As they
ensured victory in a prestigious race for their owner.

DE BOUT EN BOUT
Tout le monde a repris en partant et Elaf a pris ses
responsabilités en animant la course. Le peloton réduit
à cinq partants a ensuite évolué en file indienne,
avec la grande favorite, Teema, dans le sillage de la
future lauréate. Dans la ligne droite, Anthony Crastus
a sollicité Elaf de bonne heure. La pouliche a fait
preuve de générosité. Équipée d’œillères, elle est allée
jusqu’au bout, remportant ainsi son premier Gr1 PA.
Teema, déjà lauréate à ce niveau, termine deuxième
à une longueur et demie. Rysk Tout, troisième à cinq
longueurs, décroche son caractère gras.
UN DOUBLÉ POUR XAVIER THOMAS-DEMEAULTE
Quelques heures après la course, le Montois nous a
confié : « Elaf a été très courageuse. Quand Anthony
Crastus l’a sollicitée, elle est repartie comme jamais
elle ne l’avait fait auparavant. Je suis très heureux pour
mes deux pensionnaires. Elles remportent une épreuve
importante pour leur propriétaire. La troisième est loin.

There was quite a gap to the third. Elaf deserved to
win her Gr1 PA race. She acts well at La Teste, having
already won the Prix Nevadour (Gr3 PA) there. I don't
know yet where they will be heading next. It was a hot
day, and I'm waiting to see how they come out of the
race before outlining the next steps with connections... »
A GRAND-DAUGHTER OF THE HERALDED
AMIDOU DOUZAIA
Bred by her owner, Elaf has an almost purely French
pedigree (seven out of eight ascendants). She is a
daughter of two horses bred by Sheikh Mansoor Bin
Zayed Al Nayhan: Rabbah de Carrère (Bibi de Carrère)
and the unraced mare Mowafaka (Tidjani). The dam
has also produced Bayan (Munjiz), who won the
Shadwell Arabian Stallions Hatta International Stakes
(Gr1 PA) and the Qatar Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA).
The grandam, Amidou Douzaia (Chéri Bibi), who put
Arnaud Chaillé-Chaillé on the map as a trainer, is the
source of over 15 black type performers at either first
or second generation level. We can cite the examples
of the Emirates Championship (Gr1 PA) winner
Abhaar (Al Nasr); Naseem (Mahabb): the Al Maktoum

de voir comment elles vont rentrer pour évoquer la

Placed several times at PA Group level in France,
Jarif (Dahess) notched his third PA Group success in
Belgium on August 1st this time, following previous
wins at Duindigt and Milan. Ridden by Jean-Bernard
Eyquem, he won the President of the UAE Cup (Gr3
PA) by five lengths over 1,800m at Ostend. Picasso
T (Mugadir) was second. Freddy Py (TM Fred Texas),
already seen out at PA Group level in France, was a
further length and a half away in third. In the aftermath
of the win, Élisabeth Bernard said: "His success by
five lengths was a really good one! I'm really happy.
I love racing my horses abroad... Regarding Jarif, we
have often opted to go for some of the lower profile
prizes with him, and he has invariably fully delivered
the goods! His only average performances have been
on the dirt surfaces abroad... and he clearly doesn't
relish those. The rest of his programme will remain at
the prerogative of his owners... The horse is entered
in the Doha Cup - Prix Manganate (Gr1 PA). He will be
heading there. Of course, we will have to see how he
comes out of his race in Belgium. However, all being
well, his next target will be Deauville. He didn't have a
hard race today."

Plusieurs fois placé de Groupe en France, Jarif
(Dahess) a remporté un troisième succès de Groupe le
1er août, en Belgique, après ses succès de Duindigt et
de Milan. Associé à Jean-Bernard Eyquem, il a gagné
de cinq longueurs la President of the UAE Cup (Gr3
PA) sur les 1.800m d’Ostende. Picasso T (Mugadir)
se classe deuxième. Freddy Py (TM Fred Texas), déjà
vu au niveau Groupe en France, termine troisième à
une longueur et demie. Après la victoire, Élisabeth
Bernard a déclaré : « Son succès par cinq longueurs
est vraiment bon ! Je suis vraiment ravie. Et j’adore
aller à l’étranger... Avec Jarif, nous avons souvent
pris de petits chemins de traverse, d’autant plus qu’il
nous donne toujours entière satisfaction ! Ses seules
performances plus moyennes ont été obtenues sur le
sable à l’étranger… Et il n’aime visiblement pas cela.
Pour la suite de son programme, je suis aux ordres
de mes propriétaires... Le cheval est engagé dans le
Doha Cup - Prix Manganate (Gr1 PA). Et il va courir.
Bien sûr, il faudra voir comment il rentre de sa course
en Belgique. Mais si tout va bien, son prochain objectif
sera Deauville. Une chose est sûre, c’est qu’il n’a pas
pris une course dure ce jour. »

THE FULL BROTHER OF ARION
Bred by Haïf Mohammed Al Ghatani, Haseg and the
Haras de Rabodanges, Jarif was a €180,000 buy back
by the Haras du Saubouas at the Arqana PA sale at Saint
Cloud in 2018. A son of the Haras de Thouars-based
sire Dahess (Amer), he’s a full brother to Arion, whom
Élisabeth Bernard trained to win the Ifahr Cup (L PA)
and the aforementioned The President of the UAE Cup
(Gr3 PA) at Ostend, before running second to Abbes
(TM Fred Texas) in The UAE President Cup - UK Arabian
Derby (Gr1 PA) at Doncaster. He also contested the
Premio Milano - The President of UAE Cup and, despite
suffering the attentions of the mosquitoes, the horse
managed to secure fourth. Both are out of outstanding
Kiss de Ghazal (Dormane), the winner of her first nine
career starts in France and Britain. Trained by Jean-
François Bernard, she was a septuple PA Group winner,
including the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge
(Saint-Cloud), the Arabian Trophy (ParisLongchamp),
and the UK Arabian Derby (Grs1 PA) at Ascot. The
grandam, Kaoe de Ghazal (Kesberoy), was third in the
Abu Dhabi Championship at Deauville as a 3-year-old.

Élevé par Haïf Mohammed Al Ghatani, Haseg et le
haras de Rabodanges, Jarif a été racheté 180.000 €
par le haras du Saubouas à la vente de pur-sang
arabes Arqana, à Saint-Cloud, en 2018. C'est un fils de
Dahess (Amer), stationné au haras de Thouars. C'est un
propre frère d'Arion (Dahess), également entraîné par
Élisabeth Bernard, vainqueur de l'Ifahr Cup (L PA) et de
la President of the UAE Cup (Gr3 PA) sur l'hippodrome
d'Ostende, avant d'être le dauphin d'Abbes (TM Fred
Texas) dans l'UAE President Cup - UK Arabian Derby
(Gr1 PA) à Doncaster. Il était aussi au départ du Premio
Milano - The President of UAE Cup dont il a pris, malgré
les moustiques, la quatrième place. Leur mère est la

EDALBAR HACKS UP ON HIS FIRST ATTEMPT AT A MILE
EDALBAR EN PROMENADE POUR SA PREMIÈRE SUR LE MILE

On viewing the race entries, we anticipated a duel
between Edalbar (Af Albahar) and Rysk Tout (No Risk
Al Maury) in the Prix Burkeguy - Wathba Stallions Cup (L
PA). However, the latter took a tumble in the paddock
before the race and was withdrawn... Given the
absence of his main rival, ‘race management’ became
the overriding factor for the Écurie Jules Ouaki runner
given that he was tackling a mile for the first time,
having never previously raced over distances less than
1,900m. Confidently ridden by jockey Émilien Révolte,
Eldabar dictated terms after racing from the front.
The rider slowed the pace a little on the final bend,
as the Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte charge waited until
the entrance to the straight before unleashing his sharp
turn of foot. Without being really being threatened
in the final stages, Eldabar justified favouritism after
scoring a two lengths win. The runner up Ellie du Paon
(Dahess) was gaining black type for the first time. Two
lengths further back, Giboulée du Jura (Mister Ginoux)
ran a blinder by taking third. The latter was also earning
black type for the first time.
À la lecture des engagements, on attendait un
duel entre Edalbar (Af Albahar) et Rysk Tout (No Risk
Al Maury) dans ce Prix Burkeguy - Wathba Stallions
Cup (L, PA). Mais étant donné que cette dernière s’est
retournée dans le rond présentation avant la course, elle
a dû décliner la lutte... Se retrouvant donc débarrassé
de sa principale opposante, le représentant de l’écurie
Jules Ouaki avait juste à gérer sa découverte du mile en
compétition, lui qui n’avait pas couru sur une distance
inférieure à 1.900m. Monté en confiance par son jockey,
Émilien Révolte, Eldabar s’est donc installé en tête de
course. Légèrement repris dans le dernier tournant, le
pensionnaire de Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte a ensuite
attendu l’entrée de la dernière ligne droite pour
démarrer sèchement. Sans être vraiment attaqué dans
la phase finale, Eldabar confirme son statut de favori et
l’emporte de deux longueurs. À deux longueurs, Ellie
du Paon (Dahess) se classe deuxième, décrochant du
caractère gras pour la première fois. Deux longueurs
plus loin, Giboulée du Jura (Mister Ginoux) fait un
"truc" en s’emparant de la troisième place. Elle aussi
obtient son premier accessit black type…

CONNECTIONS WERE CONFIDENT…
At the beginning of the year, Eldabar scored a notable
win in the Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Prix Dormane
(Gr3 PA) at La Teste-de-Buch. After finishing seventh
in the Qatar Derby des Pur-sang Arabes de 4ans (Gr1
PA), he was second in the Sheikh Mansoor Festival -
Coupe du Sud-Ouest des Pur-sang Arabes (Gr3 PA)
at La Teste on July 6th, where he was put in his place
by the classy Soko (Nieshan). Contacted by phone, his
trainer, Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, said: "Edalabar won
easily, but we must acknowledge that he didn’t beat
much. The fact that he was tackling 1,600m for the first
time didn’t worry me because he is a colt with a lot of
natural speed. We will determine where he goes next in
the course of time. We will have to see how he comes
out of the race, but it's not easy to formulate a good
programme for 4-year-olds when we don't necessarily
want to be tackling older horses..."
GIBOULÉE DU JURA RUNS CREDITABLY
In the wake of her third place in the Prix Burkeguy,
Giboulée du Jura delivered a career best performance.
Last time out at La Teste, on July 13th, she had finished
fifth in the Prix Mandore. Pleased with the performance of
his charge, Stéphane Richard told Equidia: "We ran her at
Mont-de-Marsan because there aren’t many opportunities
for her. Following her effort at La Teste, the mare was really
on good terms with herself. Given that she was racing in
a small field, I was prepared to let her take her chance.
She is progressing with each run... I would like thank her
owner, Guy Authier, for his confidence in me as regards
the handling of Giboulée du Jura."
THE NEPHEW OF THE HIGH CLASS AIM SOUTH
Bred in France by Martine Bousquet, Edalbar is a son
of Af Albahar (Amer), a sire based at the Haras de
Thouars. The dam Edee Rose (Virgule Al Maury) won 12
races in the US. She also finished second in the Arabian
Cup Distaff Sprint Championship Distaff (Gr1 PA,
1,200m). Edalbar is her first product to race in France.

L’ENTOURAGE ÉTAIT CONFIANT En début d’année,
Eldabar avait notamment fait sien le Sheikh Mansoor
Festival - Prix Dormane (Gr3 PA) à La Teste-de-Buch.
Ne pouvant faire mieux qu’une septième place dans
le Qatar Derby des Pur-sang Arabes de 4ans (Gr1 PA),
il restait sur une deuxième place acquise à La Teste,
le 6 juillet, dans la Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Coupe
du Sud-Ouest des Pur-sang Arabes (Gr3 PA), où il était
dominé par le bon Soko (Nieshan). Joint par téléphone,
son entraîneur, Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, a confié  :
« Edalabar s’impose facilement, mais il faut reconnaître
que le lot n’était pas très relevé. Le fait qu’il découvrait
la distance de 1.600m ne m’inquiétait pas car c’est un
poulain qui a beaucoup de vitesse naturelle. À l’avenir,
nous allons voir sur quelle course il sera dirigé. Il faut déjà
voir comment il rentré mais, de plus, il n’est pas simple
d’avoir un bon programme pour les 4ans lorsque nous
ne voulons pas forcément affronter les vieux chevaux... »
MENTION BIEN POUR GIBOULÉE DU JURA
En prenant la troisième place de ce Prix Burkeguy, Giboulée
du Jura réalise tout simplement la meilleure valeur de sa
carrière. Dernièrement à La Teste, le 13 juillet, elle avait conclu
cinquième du Prix Mandore (PA). Satisfait du comportement
de sa pensionnaire, Stéphane-Richard Simon a déclaré sur
Equidia  : « Je suis venu à Mont-de-Marsan car je n’avais
pas beaucoup de courses pour elle. Après sa course de La
Teste, la jument était restée vraiment bien. Et aujourd’hui,
comme il n’y avait pas beaucoup de partants, je me suis
donc laissé tenter par l’engagement. Elle progresse au fil de
ses sorties... Je remercie son propriétaire, Guy Authier, qui
me fait confiance avec Giboulée du Jura. »
LE NEVEU DU CHAMPION AIM SOUTH

The grandam Ss Doctor Sam (Sam Tiki) also produced
Aim South (Burning Sand), and herself a septuple Gr1
PA winner. Now covering from the Haras de Thouars,
Aim South raced from the ages of three to 11, having
won at the highest level over trips ranging from 1,200m
to 2,000m. He was crowned US Horse of the Year and
Best American Sprinter on several occasions...
Elle a été saillie par Burning Sand (San Lou Romirz) en
2021. La deuxième mère, Ss Doctor Sam (Sam Tiki), a
aussi donné Aim South (Burning Sand), lauréat de sept
Grs1 PA. Désormais stationné au haras de Thouars, Aim
South a couru de 3ans à 11ans et a gagné au meilleur
niveau de 1.200m à 2.000m. Il a été nommé cheval

LADY PRINCESS DOMINE UN QUINTÉ FRANÇAIS

She’s a champion. The real deal. As Lady Princess
(General) claimed her eighth Gr1 PA success at Glorious
Goodwood on Wednesday July 27th. It could be said
the Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari representative had
(or almost) everything in her favour: the trip (1,600m),
the ground (good)... but not how the race panned out
tactically. As the hold-up horses had the disadvantage
of being affected by meanderings of those very
competitors they were seeking to outrun. Consequently,
in the final stages, the mare found herself 'hemmed-in'.
However, Jim Crowley didn't panic, having waited for
the gaps to appear. Consequently, the class of Lady
Princess spoke loud and clear. As she was able to reel-
in the very classy Hattal (Mahabb), who was second on
his first attempt at a mile. The third, Samlla (Assy), did
best of the 4-year-old division. His stablemate Djafar
(Dahess) collected fourth, with First Classs (Dahess) a place
further behind. The first five home are all French-trained.
C'est une championne. Une vraie. Lady Princess
(General) a gagné son huitième Gr1 PA mercredi à
Goodwood. Pour la représentante de Khalifa bin Sheail
Al Kuwari, (presque) toutes les conditions étaient
réunies : la distance (1.600m), le terrain (bon)… mais
pas le déroulement. Les chevaux qui viennent de
l'arrière ont le désavantage de subir le positionnement
de ceux qu'ils doivent dépasser. Et dans la phase finale,
elle s'est retrouvée "dans la boîte". Jim Crowley n'a pas
paniqué, il a attendu que l'ouverture se fasse. Et Lady
Princess a fait parler la classe. Elle est venue chercher le
très bon Hattal (Mahabb), qui se classe deuxième pour
son premier essai sur le mile. Troisième, Samlla (Assy)
est le premier 4ans. Son compagnon d'entraînement
Djafar (Dahess) est quatrième, devant First Classs
(Dahess). Les cinq premiers sont entraînés en France.

DUE TO RENEW RIVALRY AT PARISLONGCHAMP
IN OCTOBER Thomas Fourcy, Lady Princess' trainer,
said: "Lady Princess is exceptional. As she can really
move through the gears. It doesn't matter how the
race is run. That is despite the fact that the pace today
wasn’t very fast. I've been lucky enough to train some
very good horses. She is a truly exceptional talent. Her
willpower stamps her as something out of the ordinary.
The fact that she’s easy to handle makes it easier for
her to see out longer trips. She's heading to the Qatar
Arabian World Cup on the Arc de Triomphe card. Hattal
proved yet again what a good horse he is, and Samlla
is shaping up as a future class act..." XavierThomas-
Demeaulte, the trainer of the second Hattal, said:
"The horse beat everybody bar Lady Princess. He ran a
blinder. I’m very proud of him. There wasn't much pace
in the race. Despite this, Ioritz Mendizabal gave him a
peach of a ride. We'll aim him at the big race [editor’s
note: Qatar Arabian World Cup] on the Sunday of the
Arc de Triomphe weekend."
THE SISTER OF MISTER GINOUX Lady Princess is
the pride and joy of her breeders, the Charente-based
couple Élodie and Bruno Bellaud. The filly was bought
as a foal by Paul Basquin on behalf of Lisa and Pierre
Deymonaz. She was then
dispatched to the Haras
du Saubouas. Gérard
Larrieu acquired her on
behalf of her current
owner in the aftermath
of her victorious debut.
Lady Princess is a
daughter of General
(Amer), who is a stallion
based at the Haras du
Grand Courgeon. Her
dam, Nacrée Al Maury
(Kesberoy), won the Prix
Damas (Gr3 PA). Her
first foal, Mister Ginoux
(Amer), has proved a successful sire at the Haras de
Thouars. A quintuple winner, he captured the Qatar
International Trophy (Gr1 PA), the Derby des Pur-sang
Arabes de 4ans (Gr2 PA) (beating Gazwan (Amer) no
less) and the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge at
Toulouse (Gr3 PA). Mister Ginoux has the hallmarks of
being a very good PA sire. Nacrée Al Maury has also
produced the Qatar Prix de l’Élevage (Gr2 PA) third
Carsa de Ginoux (Dormane). Nectarine Al Maury
(Baroud III), the grandam, has generated No Risk Al
Maury (Kesberoy), the winner of ten PA Group races,
and who proved himself a successful Shadwell sire.
Nectarine aAl Maury is also the grandam of No Problem
Al Maury (Dormane). The latter won the President of
the UAE Cup Malazgirt Trophy (Gr1 PA). This is the
much heralded line of Nevada II (Djanor).

PARISLONGCHAMP Thomas Fourcy, l'entraîneur
de Lady Princess, a déclaré : « Lady Princess est
exceptionnelle. Elle a un tel changement de vitesse.
Peu importe le déroulement de la course. Même si
aujourd'hui ils ne sont pas allés très vite. J'ai eu la
chance de pouvoir entraîner de très bons chevaux.
Et elle est vraiment exceptionnelle. Avec une niaque
hors normes. Sa maniabilité lui permet de tenir plus
facilement. Elle va aller vers la Qatar Arabian World
Cup le jour de l'Arc. Hattel prouve encore une fois le
bon cheval qu'il est. Et Samlla s'annonce comme un
futur bon... » Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, l'entraîneur
du deuxième, Hattal, a dit : « Le cheval n'a été battu
que par Lady Princess. Il a très bien couru. Je suis très
fier de lui. Il n'y a pas eu beaucoup de rythme. Mais
Ioritz Mendizabal l'a très bien monté. Nous allons viser
le dimanche du week-end de l'Arc. »
LA SŒUR DE MISTER GINOUX Lady Princess fait la
fierté de ses éleveurs, Élodie et Bruno Bellaud, installés
en Charente. La pouliche a été achetée foal par Paul
Basquin pour Lisa et Pierre Deymonaz. Elle a ensuite

Five newcomers took the plunge by making their
debuts in a PA Group race, the Royal Cavalry Oman
- Prix Tidjani (Gr3). Yet it was one of the quintet,
Joe Star (Al Mourtajez), who was first past the post.
In the wake of this convincing success, the Helal Alalawi
representative could entertain legitimate ambitions
at Gr1 PA level. Ridden by Jérôme Cabre, the future
winner raced in the slipstream of the leader, the also
previously unraced Naajeeb (Mahabb). Proving himself
a straight forward ride, he quickly found himself at the
head of affairs in the final stages. After really picking up
inside the final 250m, Joe Star lengthened his stride all
the way to the line, which enabled him to turn back Al
Ghadeer (Al Mourtajez). Given that this was his debut,
he put in an excellent performance. The progeny of
the stallion Mourtajez (Dahess) filled all three places on
the podium, as Ska de l'Aigle (Al Mourtajez) was four
lengths further away in third. In the aftermath, Thomas
Fourcy, the winning trainer, told Equidia: "He’s a colt we
like. He was ready to run a month ago. I took my time with
him and was rewarded for this. He still has to work his way
up the ladder, but he's going to be a horse for the top races
at the backend of the season. Meanwhile, we will enjoy this
win. He could perhaps tackle a Gr1 PA race at Deauville,
before heading to a similar level race at Saint-Cloud."

Cinq inédits faisaient le pari de débuter directement
au niveau Groupe dans le Royal Cavalry Oman - Prix
Razzia III (Gr3). Et c’est l’un d’entre eux, Joe Star
(Al Mourtajez), qui a rallié le poteau en tête. Après ce
succès convaincant, le représentant d'Helal Alalawi
pourrait afficher de légitimes ambitions au niveau Gr1.
Sous la selle de Jérôme Cabre, le futur lauréat a été
placé dans le sillage de l’animateur, l’inédit Naajeeb
(Mahabb). Il s’est montré maniable et s’est retrouvé
rapidement en tête dans la phase finale. Après avoir
véritablement enclenché à 250m du but, Joe Star a
galopé à grandes foulées jusqu’au poteau, tout en
résistant à Al Ghadeer (Al Mourtajez). Inédit également,
il réalise une excellente performance. L’étalon
Al Mourtajez (Dahess) est triplement représenté sur ce
podium puisque Ska de l’Aigle (Al Mourtajez), prend
la troisième place, quatre longueurs plus loin. Après
la course, Thomas Fourcy, l’entraîneur lauréat, s’est
exprimé au micro d’Equidia : « C’est un poulain qu’on
aime bien. Il était prêt à courir il y a un mois. J’ai pris
mon temps avec lui et la récompense est là. Il doit
encore monter les échelons mais ça va être un cheval
pour les belles courses en fin d’année. Nous allons
apprécier cette victoire. Peut-être qu’il pourrait courir
un Gr1 à Deauville avant celui de Saint-Cloud. »

THERE IS MORE TO COME FROM AL GHADEER
There was a strong whisper for Al Ghadeer prior to his
debut. On the track, the colt didn’t disappoint, having
finished very fast after thrusting himself in the thick of
it following a patient ride. In common with Joe Star,
he should be followed when pitched at the highest
level. Contacted by phone, Damien de Watrigant, his
trainer, told us: "We are very pleased with him. I asked
Fabrice Veron to be patient for as long as possible. The
horse took a little time to pick up, but once he found
his feet, Al Ghaader really started to motor. However,
it was too late. As Joe Star had stolen a march. I think
that they’re two very good colts... certainly the two best
we've seen this year. Al Ghadeer hails from a very good
family. I think we haven’t heard the last from him, as
he’s is a very healthy horse with a superb temperament.
I’m going to look into the next options, and taking into
account that it was very hot today. We will have to see
how he comes out of the race. Deauville is an option."
SKA DE L’AIGLE PROVES LESS INCISIVE COMPARED
TO HIS DEBUT
Ska de l'Aigle began his career with a second in the Prix
Quitaine - Wathba Stallion Cup. Involved in the fight
for victory, he only went down by a short neck on that
occasion. On this Wednesday card, when pitched at PA
Group level, he was undoubtedly up against two very
smart colts... Two of Thomas Fourcy charges made it
onto the podium, and he told Equidia: "Ska de l'Aigle
didn’t run too badly. He had less finishing speed than
the first and second, who are perhaps a little better
than him in terms of quality. However, I don’t think that
he was disgraced. I think that the colt can still progress. I will
see what Maxime Guyon tells me. It was a less incisive effort
compared to his debut run."

AL GHADEER N’A PAS FINI DE FAIRE PARLER DE LUI
De très bons bruits circulaient sur Al Ghadeer avant ses
débuts. En piste, le poulain n’a pas déçu puisqu’il a fini
très vite en pleine piste après avoir patienté. Comme
Joe Star, il faudra le suivre au plus haut niveau. Joint
par téléphone, Damien de Watrigant, son entraîneur,
nous a confié : « Il nous fait très plaisir. J’ai demandé à
Fabrice Veron de patienter le plus longtemps possible.
Il a mis un peu de temps à accélérer mais quand il a
trouvé son équilibre, Al Ghadeer a vraiment jailli. Mais
c’était trop tard. Joe Star avait fait l’écart. Je pense
que ce sont deux très bons poulains… Certainement
les deux meilleurs que nous ayons vu cette année. Al
Ghadeer est issu d’une très bonne famille. Je pense
que nous n’avons pas fini d’entendre parler de lui car
c’est un cheval très sain avec un moral extraordinaire. Je
vais voir ce que nous allons faire pour la suite, sachant
qu’il faisait très chaud aujourd’hui. Il faut voir comment
il se remet. Deauville est une option. »
SKA DE L’AIGLE MOINS PERCUTANT QUE LORS DE
SES DÉBUTS
Ska de l’Aigle avait débuté par une deuxième place
dans le Prix Quitaine - Wathba Stallion Cup. Il avait lutté
pour la victoire et ne s'était incliné que d’une courte
encolure. Mercredi, au niveau Groupe, il est sans doute
tombé sur deux très bons poulains… Thomas Fourcy,
qui place donc ses deux pensionnaires sur le podium, a
dit au micro d’Equidia : « Ska de l’Aigle court pas trop
mal. Il a moins changé de vitesse que les autres, qui
sont peut-être un peu au-dessus de lui en qualité. Je
trouve toutefois qu’il ne démérite pas. Je pense que
ce poulain peut encore progresser. Je vais voir ce que
Maxime Guyon me dit. C’était quand même moins
percutant que lors de ses débuts. »

THE BROTHER OF IZADI STAR
Bred by Laure Castelnerac and Thomas Fourcy, Joe Star
is a son of Al Mourtajez, who enjoys the reputation of
being the Frankel (Galileo) of the PA world. In France,
his first crop of PA 3-year-olds boast two PA Group
winners, whereas four of his progeny already have black
type to their name. His dam, Guest Del Falot (Djorman),
was third in the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux
Arabes (Gr1 PA). Her first foal,  Ael Star (Dahss), won
on his debut before being exported to Qatar. The
grandam produced Mister General (General), the
winner of a 1,700m maiden by six lengths on the dirt
at Doha. The mare subsequently generated the very
smart  Izadi Star (Azadi), and an impressive winner on
the United Arab Emirates circuit, before getting beaten
a whisker in the Qatar PA 4-year-old Derby (Gr1 PA).

LA SŒUR D’IZADI STAR
Élevé par Laure Castelnerac et Thomas Fourcy, Joe Star
est un fils d’Al Mourtajez, le Frankel (Galileo) des pur-
sang arabes. En France, à ce jour, il compte déjà deux
gagnants de Groupe et quatre black types avec ses
premiers 3ans. Sa mère, Guest Del Falot (Djorman), fut
troisième de la Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux
Arabes (Gr1 PA). Son premier produit, Ael Star (Dahss),
a gagné en débutant avant d'être exporté au Qatar.
La deuxième mère a donné Mister General (General),
lauréat de son maiden de six longueurs à 4ans, sur
1.700m, et sur le sable à Doha. La jument a ensuite
donné le très bon Izadi Star (Azadi), impressionnant aux
Émirats Arabes Unis, puis battu du minimum dans le
Qatar Derby des Pur-Sang Arabes de 4ans (Gr1 PA)…

UN PREMIER GROUPE POUR MEZOWN ET GARY SANCHEZ
The young jockey Gary Sanchez recorded his first
PA Group win aboard Mezown (Al Mamun Monlau)
on July 13th in the Royal Cavalry Oman - Prix Tidjani
(Gr3). A very highly strung filly, the Al Shaqab Racing
filly nevertheless showed her quality by showcasing her
talent. As the stalls opened the future winner took the
lead. Although Um Elhadab (Assy) very soon assumed
the leader’s role, with Mezown part of the chasing pack
on the inside rail. Although racing keenly and clearly
ready to pounce at the entrance to the straight, Mezown
capitalised on the presence of the open stretch. Despite
showing her immaturity when finding herself alone
in front, the filly was able to find another gear which
yielded a length and three-quarters victory. Miss Zilal
(General), coming off a debut win, was second, having
finished a short head in front of the longshot Jade de
Faust (Af Albahar). Speaking to Equidia, Gary Sanchez,
the winning jockey, said: "That's great! I rode her when
she won on her introduction: she was very calm and
focused. Now she's waking up... a bit too much, in fact!
However, she is probably even better than what she
showed today. Mezown pulled a great deal. This is my
first Group win. I'm very happy."
HEADING TO THE QATAR ARABIAN TROPHY DES
POULICHES After a victorious start to her career at
Toulouse, Mezown filled third place in the Qatar Coupe
de France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr2) at Chantilly, when
showing herself to be quite green. She made great
strides forward on this particular card, but still has
to learn how to settle. There is little doubt that the
opportunities of making an impact at Gr1 PA level will
come her way, and namely in the Qatar Arabian Trophy
des Pouliches (Gr1 PA) at Saint-Cloud on the eve of the
Qatar Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe (Gr1) weekend.

Le 13 juillet, le jeune jockey Gary Sanchez a remporté

(Gr3). Pouliche bouillante, la représentante d’Al Shaqab
Racing n’en est pas moins bonne puisqu’elle s’est
imposée avec talent. À la sortie des stalles, la future
lauréate est venue prendre l’avantage. Elle a ensuite
été relayée par Um Elhadab (Assy) et a trouvé sa place
le long de la lice intérieure. Bien qu’allante durant le
parcours et prête à bondir à l’entrée de la ligne droite,
Mezown a profité de l’open stretch. Et même si elle a
fait preuve d’immaturité seule devant, elle a su bien
repartir pour l’emporter d’une longueur et trois quarts.
Miss Zilal (General), qui venait de s’imposer pour ses
débuts, est deuxième, une courte tête devant Jade
de Faust (Af Albahar), pouliche la plus abandonnée au
betting. Au micro d’Equidia, Gary Sanchez, le jockey
lauréat, a déclaré : « C’est super ! Je l’avais montée
lorsqu’elle avait gagné en débutant : elle était très
calme et sérieuse. Là, elle se réveille… Un peu trop
même ! Mais elle est sans doute encore meilleure que
ce qu’elle montre aujourd’hui. Mezown a beaucoup
tiré. C’est mon premier Groupe. Je suis très heureux. »
VERS LE QATAR ARABIAN TROPHY DES POULICHES
Après des débuts victorieux à Toulouse, Mezown a
pris la troisième place de la Qatar Coupe de France
des Chevaux Arabes (Gr2) à Chantilly, en se montrant
assez verte. Elle court en grand progrès ce mercredi
mais doit encore apprendre à se canaliser. Nul doute
qu’elle aura ses chances au niveau Gr1, notamment
vers le Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA),
à Saint-Cloud, la veille du week-end du Qatar Prix de
l’Arc de Triomphe (Gr1).

After the race, Élisabeth Bernard, her trainer, told Equidia:
"The more we feel we have a chance, the more painful
the experience! However, the pressure is off for now. She’s
very much in the mould of her sire, who was a difficult
customer. My husband was able to iron his problems out,
and I hope that I can do the same with the daughter. This
was Mezown's first attempt over 1,900m. She has a lot
of speed but, given the torrid heat, I tend to work my
horses sparingly. Usually, we have to be concert pitch to
tackle such races. She wasn't, and so I'm delighted with
her performance. The filly has now pencilled herself in for
a date on the eve of the Arc weekend, as there is a Gr1
PA race on offer at Saint-Cloud for 3-year-old PA fillies on
Friday [editor's note: September 30th]. Maybe she will
have a prep race beforehand, and I will discuss it with the
owner's representative."
A NIECE OF MOTRAG
Bred by Al Shaqab Racing, Mezown is a daughter
of the "home" stallion Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz),
who is based at the Haras du Grand Courgeon. She’s
the first foal of the unraced Muzoon (Amer). She was
subsequently bred to Al Mamun Monlau for a second
time. The grandam has produced Motrag (Amer), the
winner of the Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA),
and the Grand Prix de S.A.R. le Prince Héritier Moulay
El Hassan (Gr3 PA) winning Jeyoosh (Amer). The latter
was also second in the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des
Juments (Gr1 PA). Divana (Dormane), the great grandam
of the filly, is in fact the dam of the stallion Divamer
(Amer). This is also the line of the Emir's Sword (Gr1 PA)
winner Dhemis (Daham).

désormais. Elle ressemble beaucoup à son père, qui

j’espère que je pourrai faire de même avec la fille. C’est
la première fois que Mezown courait sur 1.900m. Elle a
beaucoup de vitesse mais par ces chaleurs excessives, je
ne travaille pas beaucoup mes chevaux. Normalement,
ces courses-là, nous devons les courir en étant à 100 %.
Elle ne l’était pas, donc je suis ravie de sa performance.
Elle vous donne rendez-vous le vendredi du week-end
de l’Arc à Saint-Cloud, dans le Gr1 réservé aux femelles
de 3ans. Peut-être qu’elle pourra participer à une course
préparatoire au préalable. Je vais en discuter avec le
représentant du propriétaire. »

The list of Lady Princess (General) Gr1 PA wins
seems endless. Rewinding back to July 6 at La Teste,
she added the Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Critérium des
Pouliches to her CV this time! She also turned on the
style! Despite making her return, the Khalifa bin Sheail
Al Kuwari runner dominated the opposition, as she
didn’t have to force her talent. Her next assignment will
be the Qatar International Stakes (Gr1 PA)... After this
win at La Teste, Lady Princess should be a very warm
order to retain her crown at Goodwood.
A CUT ABOVE THE REST As the gates opened,
Christophe Soumillon anchored Lady Princess in second
last position. Settling well in the hands of her jockey,
the mare maintained the same position until the closing
stages. Capitalising on the open stretch, the mare was
able to take closer order without covering too much extra
ground, before really hitting her stride in the final 200m.
After changing legs, she ran on for what proved a very
comfortable success. Teema (Bibi de Carrère), second in
the Qatar Prix de l'Élevage (Gr2 PA), proved the only one
capable of keeping tabs on the winner. She was beaten
three-quarters of a length into second. Elaf (Rabbah),
her stablemate and the front runner in the race, was a
further two and a half lengths adrift in third. After the race,
Christophe Soumillon, the winning jockey, told Equidia:
« She really stood out in the paddock. Thomas Fourcy
told me that she wasn’t 100 per cent. So I had to ensure
that her effort wasn’t a prolonged one. He also explained
that the mare can give a different feel after returning from
a lay off. The presence of the open-stretch ensured that
we didn’t have to challenge widest of all. When Anthony

La liste des victoires de Gr1 PA de Lady Princess
(General) semble sans fin. Et le 6 juillet à La Teste,
elle a ajouté le Sheikh Mansoor Festival - Critérium
des Pouliches à son palmarès. Avec style qui plus est !
Alors qu’elle effectuait une rentrée, la représentante de
Khalifa bin Sheail Al Kuwari a dominé l’opposition sans
forcer. Son prochain objectif sera les Qatar International
Stakes (Gr1 PA)… Après ce succès testerin, Lady
Princess devrait être ultra-favorite pour conserver son
titre à Goodwood.
AU-DESSUS DU LOT À l’ouverture des stalles,
Christophe Soumillon a placé Lady Princess en avant-
dernière position. Bien posée sur la main de son jockey,
la jument a gardé sa place jusque dans la phase finale.
Profitant de l’open stretch, elle a pu se rapprocher
sans faire trop de chemin et a véritablement enclenché
à 200m du but. Lady Princess a ensuite changé de
jambe pour filer vers un très facile succès. Teema (Bibi
de Carrère), deuxième du Qatar Prix de l’Élevage (Gr2
PA), a été la seule capable de la suivre pour finir. Elle
est deuxième, à trois quarts de longueur. Elaf (Rabbah),
sa compagne d’écurie et animatrice, est troisième,
deux longueurs et demie plus loin. Après la course,
Christophe Soumillon, le jockey lauréat, a déclaré
au micro d’Equidia  : «  Dans le rond de présentation,
elle sortait vraiment du lot. Thomas Fourcy m’avait
dit qu’elle n’était pas à 100 %. Il ne fallait donc pas
que je fasse un effort trop prolongé. Et il m'a aussi
expliqué qu’elle pouvait être un peu différente lors de
ses rentrées. L’open-stretch m’a permis de ne pas venir

Crastus looked for an opening on the rail, I took the
opportunity to place the mare in the slipstream of Ioritz
Mendizabal’s mount. Once we drew upsides, my mare
showed great acceleration. When Lady Princess takes the
lead, she tends to idle somewhat. So it was imperative
that the mare keep focused until the wire, but she won in

GOODWOOD IS AGAIN ON THE AGENDA
Following her victory at Abu Dhabi in the Sheikh Zayed
bin Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) during
the winter, the Thomas Fourcy runner made history
by becoming the first horse not owned by a sheikh to
win the Amir Sword (Gr1 PA) at Doha. As was the case
last year, she is expected to head to Goodwood for
the Qatar International Stakes (Gr1 PA). Thomas Fourcy
told us over the phone: « She was not at her best but
had done enough work to make a decent comeback.
She will now head to Goodwood on July 27. That gives
us around 20 days preparation time. Lady Princess is
one of those exceptional
horses: as she adapts to
all manner of distances
whether it be 1,600m
(1m) or 2,400m (12f).
Her mind-set means that
she’s a good traveller,
and is capable of winning
at the highest level in
any country. Although
small in stature, she has
a huge heart. » Xavier
Thomas-Demeaulte, the
trainer of the second and
third, said: « Before the
race I would have settled for being second and third
to Lady Princess with Temma and Elaf. Temma ran a
decent race. She lost no caste in defeat. Moreover, she
has proven herself to be an excellent competitor in the
past. There is another Gr1 PA race on offer for them at
La Teste-de-Buch, and they will both be in the line-up. »
THE SISTER OF MISTER GINOUX Lady Princess is
the pride and joy of her breeders, the Charente-based
couple Élodie and Bruno Bellaud. The filly was bought
as a foal by Paul Basquin on behalf of Lisa and Pierre
Deymonaz. She was then dispatched to the Haras du
Saubouas. Gérard Larrieu acquired her on behalf of
her current owner in the aftermath of her victorious
debut. Lady Princess is a daughter of General (Amer),
and a stallion based at the Haras du Grand Courgeon.
Her dam, Nacrée Al Maury (Kesberoy), won the Prix
Damas (Gr3 PA). Her first foal, Mister Ginoux (Amer),
has proved a successful sire at the Haras de Thouars. A
quintuple winner, he captured the Qatar International
Trophy (Gr1 PA), the Derby des Pur-Sang arabes de 4ans
(Gr2 PA), (having toppled Gazwan (Amer) no less) and

à aller chercher le rail, j’en ai profité pour me retrouver
derrière Ioritz Mendizabal. Et une fois que je suis arrivé
à côté de lui, ma jument a eu une superbe accélération.
Quand Lady Princess prend l’avantage, elle a tendance
à se reprendre un peu. Il a fallu la garder concentrée
jusqu’au bout mais elle le fait comme une crack... et
comme d’habitude. »
GOODWOOD, COMME L’ANNÉE DERNIÈRE
Cet hiver, après sa victoire à Abu Dhabi dans la Sheikh

Joint par téléphone, Thomas Fourcy nous a dit : «  Elle
n’était pas au top mais avait assez de travail pour faire
une bonne rentrée. Le 27 juillet, elle sera à Goodwood.
Cela nous laisse une vingtaine de jours pour la préparer.
Lady Princess fait partie de
ces chevaux d’exception :

ce soit 1.600m ou 2.400m.

j'aurais signé pour être deuxième et troisième de Lady
Princess avec Temma et Elaf. Temma a réalisé une course
honorable. Il n'y a vraiment pas à rougir d'être battu. De
plus, elle a prouvé qu'elle était excellente compétitrice
par le passé. Il y a un autre Gr1 en août à La Teste-de-
Buch, et elles seront au départ toutes les deux. »
LA SŒUR DE MISTER GINOUX Lady Princess fait la
fierté de ses éleveurs, Élodie et Bruno Bellaud, installés
en Charente. La pouliche a été achetée foal, par Paul
Basquin, pour Lisa et Pierre Deymonaz. Elle a ensuite
pris la direction du haras du Saubouas. Gérard Larrieu
l'a achetée juste après ses débuts victorieux pour le
compte de son propriétaire actuel. Lady Princess est

Ginoux (Dormane). Nectarine Al Maury (Baroud III), the
grandam, has generated No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy),
the winner of ten PA group races, and a successful
Shadwell sire. Nectarine al Maury is also the grandam
of No Problem Al Maury (Dormane). The latter won the
President of the UAE Cup Malazgirt Trophy (Gr1 PA).
This is the much heralded line of Nevada II (Djanor).

SOKO, SANS FORCER POUR SON RETOUR EN FRANCE

Having returned to France after wintering in the
(Arabian) Gulf, Soko (Nieshan) proved a classy winner
of the Cheikh Mansoor Festival - Coupe du Sud-Ouest
des Pur-sang Arabes (Gr3 PA). Under Olivier Peslier, the
horse now racing in the colours of the Royal Stables of
Oman, also showed that he should be a factor in the
forthcoming European PA Gr1 races. After tracking the
leader, Edalbar (Af Albahar), the future winner didn’t
move a muscle until 400m from the line. Under a hand
ride, he gradually took the measure of Edalbar, and his
ability to pick up the pace progressively enabled him
to score an easy win. Edalbar lost no caste in defeat.
He was beaten a length and a quarter into second. The
pair were clear of the remainder as there was a further
gap of three and a half lengths to Ibn Gabir (Mared Al
Sahra), who was a game third.
De retour en France après avoir passé l’hiver dans
le Golfe, Soko (Nieshan) s’est imposé avec classe dans
le Cheikh Mansoor Festival - Coupe du Sud-Ouest des
Pur-sang Arabes (Gr3 PA). Sous la selle d’Olivier Peslier,
celui qui porte désormais les couleurs des écuries
royales d’Oman a montré qu’il faudrait compter avec
lui pour les Grs1 européens à venir. Dans le sillage de
l’animateur, Edalbar (Af Albahar), le futur lauréat n’a
fait mouvement qu'à 400m du but. Monté aux bras par
son jockey, il a progressivement dépassé Edalbar et a
accentué ses foulées jusqu’au poteau pour l’emporter
facilement. Edalbar ne démérite pas. Il termine
deuxième à une longueur et un quart. Derrière, le
trou s’est formé puisqu’il faut compter trois longueurs
et demie pour retrouver Ibn Gabir (Mared Al Sahra),
courageux troisième.

DEAUVILLE AND THE ARC WEEKEND Trained by
Olivier Trigodet at the beginning of his career, Soko
delivered a pleasant surprise by taking third in the
Qatar Derby des Pur-sang Arabes de 4ans (Gr1 PA).
This was the prelude to his display at Deauville where
he proved a cut above his rivals in the Doha Cup (Gr1
PA), having mastered class acts such as Hoggar de
l'Ardus (Mister Ginoux). Before departing to the Middle
East, where he enjoyed a very good winter, the horse
was second in the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge
Classic - Sheikh Zbs Al Nahyan (Gr1 PA). After the
race, Élisabeth Bernard, Soko's trainer, told Equidia:
"I was shaking the whole race! It's wonderful because
the horse’s attitude has changed as he has got older.
There was a time when all and sundry preferred him to
see him racing from the front, and I was happy that there
was a pacemaker in the race. He has mastered the art of
being tucked in behind, and getting past the lead horse. I
know Olivier Peslier very well... He never had recourse to
the whip. That meant that he knew that the horse was up
to the task. Looking ahead, we will aim him at the Gr1 PA
prize at Deauville [editor’s note: the Doha Cup] in August,
before heading to the Gr1 feature at Longchamp [editor’s
note: the Qatar Arabian World Cup]. " Xavier Thomas-
Demeaulte, the trainer of the second, told us: "Edalbar
has delivered an excellent performance in the wake of his
second to Soko. The problem facing us is that there are
no races open to him which are exclusively for PA 4-year-
olds. He will be up against older horses... and so I will
have to discuss his race programme with his owners."
NIESHAN ENJOYS HIS SECOND GR1 PA SUCCESS
AS A SIRE Soko has showcased the breeding
establishment of Jean-Luc Jardel. He is the second
Gr1 PA winner sired by Nieshan (Akbar), with Hadi
de Carrère (Nieshan) being the first. This stallion is
based at the Haras de Carrère, near Toulouse. Two
other members of his progeny (Penny and Izmir de
Carrère) have achieved podium finishes at Gr1 PA level.
The dam, Saka (Tornado de Syrah), ran twice without
success. Soko is her third winner after Sia (Akbar), a
winner in France and the Netherlands, and Shen (Meliar
Halab). The latter won an amateurs’ race. The grandam,
Sainte Lucie (Dormane), failed to trouble the judge in
two racecourse attempts. None of her five foals to
have graced French racecourses have managed a win
between them. The great grandam produced Jalnar Al
Khalidiah (Tiwaiq), the winner of the Prix Manganate at
Deauville, and second in the Arabian World Cup (Grs1
PA). At stud, Jalnar Al Khalidiah has produced top class
PA horses. This is the line of Jarnin (Akbar), who won
the Prix du Président des UAE (Gr1 PA) at Deauville,
and the H.H. The President Cup (Gr1 PA) at Abu Dhabi.
This is one of one of the pedigree pages which traces
back to Nevada II (Djanor).

DEAUVILLE ET LE WEEK-END DE L’ARC Entraîné
par Olivier Trigodet en début de carrière, Soko avait
créé une belle surprise en prenant la troisième place du

l’entraîneur de Soko, a déclaré au micro d’Equidia : 
« J’ai tremblé toute la course ! C’est magnifique parce
qu'en vieillissant, ce cheval a changé de comportement.
À une certaine époque, tout le monde préférait qu’il
soit devant et aujourd’hui, j’étais ravie qu’il y ait un
leader. Il a appris à courir sagement derrière, à venir sur
le leader. Je connais très bien Olivier Peslier… Il ne lui
a pas mis une claque sur l’épaule. Cela voulait dire qu’il
savait qu’il avait la pointure. Désormais, nous allons
viser le Gr1 de Deauville [la Doha Cup, ndlr] en août,
puis le Gr1 de Longchamp [la Qatar Arabian World
Cup, ndlr].  » Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, l’entraîneur
du deuxième, nous a confié  : «  En étant deuxième
de Soko, Edalbar réalise une excellente performance.
Le problème, désormais, c'est qu'il n'y a pas de course
exclusivement pour les 4ans. Il va se retrouver avec les
vieux... Je vais devoir discuter du programme avec ses
propriétaires. »
LE DEUXIÈME GAGNANT DE GR1 DE NIESHAN
Soko met à l'honneur l'élevage de Jean-Luc Jardel.
C'est le deuxième gagnant de Gr1 de Nieshan (Akbar)
