HATTAL: THE DEATH OF A CHAMPION
HATTAL, UN CHAMPION EST MORT
We’ve had to come to terms with the death of the
outstanding performer Hattal (Mahabb), who raced in
the colours of his breeder Sheikh Mansour, which was
announced on October 26. A quintuple Gr1 PA winner,
he was being aimed at the Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al
Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) in Abu Dhabi. Trained by
Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, Hattal made his racecourse
debut as a four-year-old – a season which coincided with
three Gr1 PA
wins: the Qatar Derby des Pur-sang Arabes de 4ans
(Chantilly) and the President of UAE Cup – UK Arabian
Derby (Doncaster), before ending his season on a high
in the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Classic.
He remained unbeaten in two attempts as a five-year-
old when annexing the Prix de Carthage (Gr2 PA) and
the President of the UAE Cup – Coupe d’Europe des
Chevaux Arabe (Gr1 PA). Hattal successfully defended
his title in the latter race this season. He was coming off
a fourth in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA).
Ioritz Mendizabal, his regular partner, told us: "I was very
saddened on learning about the death of Hattal. As well
as being a great horse, he was also very likeable type.
It’s a big loss
for his owner and trainer, Xavier-Thomas Demeaulte... I
won many Gr1 PA races on him. He was simply an ex-
traordinary horse. I would also like to take this opportu-
nity to offer all my support to connections. For it’s never
easy to lose such a horse..." This untimely passing of the
stallion prospect is a big loss for Stud Book.

Le 26 octobre, nous avons appris la mort d’Hattal
(Mahabb), remarquable élève et représentant de Son
Altesse le cheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. Ga-
gnant de cinq Grs1 PA, il préparait la Cheikh Zayed Bin
Sultan Al Nahyan Jewel Crown (Gr1 PA) d’Abu Dhabi.
Entraîné par Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, Hattal a débu-
té à 4ans et a remporté trois Grs1 PA à cet âge : le Qa-
tar Derby des Pur-sang Arabes de 4ans à Chantilly, puis
le President of UAE Cup – UK Arabian Derby à Don-
caster, avant de conclure son année sur un succès dans
la French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Classic. À 5ans,
il est resté invaincu en deux tentatives, s’adjugeant le
Prix de Carthage (Gr2 PA) et la President of the UAE
Cup – Coupe d’Europe des Chevaux Arabe (Gr1 PA).
Hattal a conservé son titre dans cette dernière épreuve
en 2022. Il restait sur une quatrième place dans la Qa-
tar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA).
Ioritz Mendizabal, qui l’a si souvent monté, nous
a confié : « J’ai été très attristé lorsque j’ai appris la
mort d’Hattal. En plus d’être un crack, il était très at-
tachant. Pour son propriétaire et pour son entraîneur,
Xavier-Thomas Demeaulte, c’est une grosse perte…
J’ai gagné de nombreux Grs1 avec lui. Il sortait tout
simplement de l’ordinaire. J’en profite également pour
donner tout mon soutien à son entourage. Ce n’est ja-
mais simple de perdre un tel cheval… » Ce futur étalon
est aussi une grande perte pour le stud-book.

When the horses sold at public auction sector
progresses, the industry has a whole benefits
This was a difficult to foresee development. Yet it has
indeed proved impressive. As, two years ago, the sole
French PA sale, organised in partnership by AFAC (As-
sociation Française du Cheval Arabe de Course) and
Arqana, at Saint-Cloud, generated a turnover figure of
1,78 million euros. Compared to 2020, the equivalent
figure this year has almost doubled. At the time of wri-
ting, two French PA sales have yet to take place, with
the first of these, organised by Auctav, scheduled for
November 23rd. The I Want The Winner PA auction will
follow on December 8 . However, the turnover figure
th
regarding PA horses sold at public auction – in France
this year – has already reached 6.9 million euros, and
this following the live or online sales which have already
taken place (under the auspices of Arqana, Osarus,
Auctav and I Want The Winner...).
We can therefore trumpet that turnover generated by
the sale of PA horses, via the medium of the sales ring,
will, by the end of the year, have quadrupled in the
space of two years. Setting aside Shadwell’s downsizing
of its own racing operation – in itself a rare occurrence
– we are currently dealing with a market whose volume
has increased by a factor of 2.5.
Admittedly, the activity in the sales ring has partly
eclipsed the demand for horses which are sold priva-
tely. This is a very good thing for the transparency and
visibility of the PA industry. However, in any case, it is
certain that part of this increase corresponds to the
concept of adding value. As, the same horses, by virtue
of being sold at public auction, have generated more
money. Who are the beneficiaries? To a certain extent,
of course, the sales agencies are. Above all, the French-
based breeders, in their capacity as vendors, are also
rewarded for their efforts. They will be able to reinvest
part of their profits when it comes to paying for the
costs of keeping horses in training. Equally, they will
also be able to invest when it comes to upgrading their
broodmare bands. Lastly, the industry en bloc, stands
to gain because as AFAC is entitled to a percentage of
the monies generated from horses sold at public auc-
tion. This levy is by and large channelled into a com-
mon fund, which impacts on prize money levels – small
and big prizes alike!
At a time when the market for endurance horses sec-
tor seems unable to extricate itself out of the mire into
which it has sunk, the health of the PA racing market
must be advanced as a strong argument as regards
encouraging other players within the Purebred Ara-

Quand le marché public progresse, c’est toute la
filière qui gagne
C’était une évolution difficile à prévoir. Et elle est as-
sez impressionnante. Il y a deux ans, l’unique vente de
pur-sang arabes, celle organisée par l’Afac et Arqana à
Saint-Cloud, générait un chiffre d’affaires de 1,78 mil-
lion d’euros. En comparaison avec 2020, son chiffre
d’affaires a presque doublé. À l’heure où nous écrivons
ces lignes, deux ventes françaises n’ont pas encore eu
lieu, celle du 23 novembre chez Auctav, et celle du
8 décembre chez I Want the Winner. Mais le marché
aux enchères publiques – en France – représente déjà
6,9 millions d’euros en tenant compte des différentes
agences de vente (Arqana, Osarus, Auctav…) et plate-
formes (I Want the Winner...).
On peut donc annoncer que d’ici à la fin de l’année, le
marché public aura quadruplé en l’espace de deux ans.
Si on met de côté les réductions d’effectifs de Shad-
well – qui sont par essence des événements rares –,
nous sommes tout de même sur les bases d’un marché
annuel dont le volume a été multiplié par 2,5.
Certes, le ring a en partie pris le pas sur les amiables.
Et c’est une très bonne chose pour la transparence et la
visibilité de la filière du pur-sang arabe. Mais dans tous
les cas, il est certain qu’une partie de cette augmenta-
tion correspond à une création de valeur. Les mêmes
chevaux, en étant exposés sur le marché public, ont gé-
néré plus d’argent. Qui en sont les bénéficiaires ? Dans
une certaine mesure, bien sûr, les agences de vente.
Mais aussi et surtout les éleveurs vendeurs installés en
France qui sont ainsi récompensés de leurs efforts. Ils
vont pouvoir recycler une partie de leurs profits dans les
pensions de chevaux à l’entraînement. Et investir pour
améliorer leur jumenterie. Enfin, c’est la filière dans son
intégralité qui sort gagnante car l’Afac, qui participe à
la promotion des ventes publiques grâce à ses réseaux,
reçoit un dédommagement. Et cet argent abonde un
fonds commun, pour traverser les crises comme celle
de la Covid ou pour financer les allocations de courses.

However, it does mean, at the very least, that one can
pursue one’s passion for breeding and racing on a rea-
listic basis. This is because market forces makes it pos-
sible to maintain a certain financial equilibrium.

À L’ASSEMBLÉE GÉNÉRALE DE L’AFAC
The General Assembly of AFAC (Association
Française du Cheval Arabe de Course) took place
on October 24th at Toulouse racecourse, and it coin-
cided with a great day’s racing dedicated to the PA
breed, in the form of three Group PA races, inclu-
ding the French Arabian Breeders Challenge Classic
- H.H. Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (Gr1 PA).
"The membership were a numerous presence and they
were greeted in the Diane suite, where they were provi-
ded with welcome gifts by AFAC. The president, Axelle
Nègre de Watrigant, then got proceedings underway in
the General Assembly by asking for a minute’s silence
in tribute to Yves Plantin, who passed away this year.
The minutes of the 2021 General Assembly were sub-
sequently unanimously approved.
Updates on the financing of the 2021 race programme,
added to the provisional financing of its 2022 equiva-
lent, were issued. Most of the sponsors have under-
scored their commitment to the racing calendar by
renewing their sponsorship agreements. We have also
had the great pleasure of counting the Royal Cavalry of
Oman among our new sponsors this year.
Thanks to new sponsors this year, a new PA race, the
Prix Baron Gasquet, was instigated at Langon. Due to
the popularity of this race among professionals, it was
run in two divisions, (open to both sexes), and the idea
of them becoming single sex races will be discussed

d’une belle journée de courses dédiée aux pur-
sang arabes, avec trois courses de Groupe PA dont
le French Arabian Breeders Challenge Classic-H.H.
Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (Gr1 PA).
« Les adhérents venus en nombre étaient accueillis
au salon Diane, où des cadeaux de bienvenue étaient
offerts à leur arrivée par l’Afac. La présidente, Axelle
Nègre de Watrigant, a ensuite ouvert l’Assemblée gé-
nérale en demandant une minute de silence en hom-
mage à Yves Plantin, disparu cette année.
Le procès-verbal de l’Assemblée générale 2021 a été
ensuite approuvé à l’unanimité.
Un point sur le financement des courses 2021 et le
financement prévisionnel des courses 2022 a été
présenté. L’essentiel des sponsors ont consolidé
leur participation au programme en renouvelant leur
sponsoring. En 2022, nous avons l’immense plaisir
de compter parmi nos nouveaux sponsors la Royal
Cavalry Oman.
En 2022, grâce aux nouveaux sponsorings, une course
à Langon a été créée, le Prix Baron Gasquet. En raison
de l’engouement des professionnels pour cette course,
elle a été dédoublée et le projet de faire deux courses
sexées sera envisagé lors de la prochaine commission
de programme de l’Afac.

The newly created races in 2021, the Prix Magnésie
(Toulouse), the Prix H.H. Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum
(Mont-de-Marsan) and the Prix Guy de Watrigant (Pau),
were again incorporated into this year’s racing calendar.
Furthermore, AFAC has pursued its harmonisation of
prize money policy worth €30,000, and the total bud-
get in the area of PA prize money has been fixed at
€3,390,000.
Several major race days, which feted our sponsors,
were organised during the summer, including the
Sheikh Mansoor Festival card, complete with the Sheikh
Mansoor Festival – Critérium des Pouliches, which, for
the first time, was accorded Gr1 PA status; whereas
the Royal Cavalry of Oman Meeting served to shine
the spotlight on the young generation (in the form of
two Group PA prizes for 3-year-olds); lastly the Sheikh
Mansoor Festival-Liwa International Stakes (the former
Hatta International Stakes run at Newbury) was staged
in France as result of a close international collaboration
between AFAC, ARO (Arabian Racing Organisation),
the Pattern Race Committee and the Sheikh Mansoor
Festival (organisation).
We would like to thank Stéphane Chazel, the President
of ACA (Association Nationale Française du Cheval
Arabe pur-sang et demi-sang), who gave us the run

Les nouvelles courses 2021, le Prix Magnésie à Tou-

a poursuivi l’harmonisation des allocations pour une
somme de 30.000 €, ce qui représente un budget total

des sujets importants comme l’Icsi et la simplification
des certificats d’exportation.

tion) conference which took place in Jordan last week.
AFAC, as a result of its collaborative approach, ensured
that France, via the medium of IFCE (Institut Français
du Cheval et l’Équitation), whose representative was
Caroline Teyssier, and ACA, had its voice heard at
WAHO executive committee level on important sub-
ject matters such as Icsi (equine intracytoplasmic sperm
injections), and the simplification of export certificates.
After which, Jean-Pierre Deroubaix, a member of the
ruling council, and treasurer, informed the assembly
about the international racing projects being mooted
by IFAHR (International Federation of Arabian Horse
Racing) during the latter organisation’s last meeting.
The (2021) five executive board members, Jean-Pierre
Deroubaix, Didier Giethlen, Bertrand Le Métayer and
Axelle Nègre de Watrigant, all stood for re-election,
but no new candidates were forthcoming. So the Gene-
ral Assembly unanimously approved their re-election.
Rent a Horse and Eqwin were able to unveil their pro-
jects and innovations, which was the prelude to an ex-
change of ideas with the membership.
After matters were formally brought to a close at the
General Assembly, all attendees and members were in-
vited to a cocktail party which was held for the duration
of the race meeting."

réunion.
Les cinq membres du Conseil d’administration sor-
tants, Jean-Pierre Deroubaix, Didier Giethlen, Bertrand
Le Métayer et Axelle Nègre de Watrigant, étaient tous
candidats à leur réélection et aucune nouvelle candi-
dature n’a été présentée. L’Assemblée a approuvé à
l’unanimité leur réélection.
Rent a Horse et Eqwin ont pu présenter leurs projets et
nouveautés, puis échanger avec nos adhérents.
Pour clôturer l’Assemblée générale, l’ensemble des
participants et des membres de l’association étaient
conviés à un cocktail tout au long de la réunion de

Anthony Bascle has really embraced the word per-
severance. He is in fact the breeder of the recent Qa-
tar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA) third Djafar (Dahess).
Having pursued his vocation as a breeder without ac-
tually owning any land for a considerable period, he
has gone out on a limb for his passion.
In the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA) on October
2 , Djafar (Dahess) staged a surprise by taking third in

the Parisian feature at odds of 48-1. He was coming off
a fourth in the Qatar International Stakes (Gr1 PA) at the
backend of July at Goodwood, having finished third in
the Qatar International Cup (Gr1 PA) at Doha. Anthony
Bascle explained: "I said to myself that fifth would be
good enough... so to finish third is tremendous. To take
minor honours behind a pair of genuine heavyweights,
Lady Princess (General) and Ebraz (Amer), is great. The
smallish Djafar (chuckling!) doesn't have a great phy-
sique, in common with Lady Princess. However, both
have an engine, and the necessary mind-set too..."

De la persévérance, il en a fallu à Anthony Bas-
cle. Djafar (Dahess), récent troisième de la Qatar
Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA), c’est lui qui l’a fabri-
qué. Longtemps éleveur sans terre, il s’est battu
pour sa passion.
Le 2 octobre dernier, dans la Qatar Arabian Wor-
ld Cup (Gr1 PA), Djafar (Dahess) a créé la surprise
en terminant troisième de la grande course à 48/1.
Il restait sur une quatrième place dans les Qatar In-
ternational Stakes (Gr1 PA), fin juillet à Goodwood,
après s'être classé troisième de la Qatar Internatio-
nal Cup (Gr1 PA) à Doha. Anthony Bascle explique :
«  Je me disais que si nous étions cinquième, ce se-
rait déjà bien… alors troisième, c’est vraiment formi-
dable. Troisième des monstres sacrés que sont Lady
Princess (General) et Ebraz (Amer) c’est top. Le petit
Djafar (rires !) n’a pas un grand modèle, tout comme
Lady Princess d’ailleurs. Mais ils ont le moteur. Et le
mental également… »

HORSES ARE HIS VOCATION
"I served my apprenticeship at the Mont-de-Marsan
branch of AFASEC, having alternated between school,
and completing my apprenticeship course, over a three
year period. I took part in 13 races, which were mainly
mounted trotting events. I was also in the sulky in a few
trotting races under harness. I did my military service at
Saumur in the military equestrian section. My mother har-
vested grapes for wine-making at the Gémozac-based
establishment of the Deblaise family. They are wine
growers, but are also breeders of cattle and PA horses
for endurance races. My mother used to talk about these
magnificent horses."
His parents had promised to buy him a horse if he ob-
tained his lad-jockey’s (young person’s) qualification. So
they gave him Qattar (Blanc Marine) as a present. The
latter was an Arabian horse with a pedigree that spoke
to endurance racing, and who was sourced from the
Deblaise family. This proved to be his very first Arabian
horse.
"So I went to see them and fell in love with them. Every-
thing mushroomed from there. I left the horse business
several years ago. I work, on a temporary basis, as an
HGV driver in the public sector. However, my dream is
to be able to earn a living from my passion: breeding. I
bought a house at Chabanais, with almost nine hectares
of land, in March. Until now, I didn't own any land, having
until now leased the required acreage. I had to store the
fodder in one place, whereas the horses were based at
another part of the property, and so it wasn't easy..."

LE CHEVAL, SA VOCATION
« J’ai fait mon apprentissage à l’Afasec de Mont-de-
Marsan, alternant école et passage chez mon maître
d’apprentissage pendant trois ans. J’ai pris part à 13
courses, au trot monté surtout. Et un peu au trot at-
telé. J’ai fait mon service militaire à Saumur au sein
de la section équestre militaire. Ma mère faisait les
vendanges chez les Deblaise à Gémozac. Ils sont viti-
culteurs, mais aussi éleveurs de bovins et de pur-sang
arabes pour l’endurance. Ma mère me parlait de ces
chevaux magnifiques. Je suis allé les voir et j’en suis
tombé amoureux. »
Ses parents lui avaient promis de lui acheter un cheval
s’il obtenait son CAP de lad-jockey. C’est ainsi qu’ils
lui ont offert Qattar (Blanc Marine), un cheval arabe
avec des origines pour l’endurance qui venait de chez
les Deblaise. Ce fut son tout premier cheval arabe.
« Tout est parti de là. Depuis plusieurs années, j’ai quit-
té le métier des chevaux. Je travaille comme chauffeur
poids lourd et manœuvre en intérim dans les travaux
publics. Mais mon rêve serait de pouvoir vivre de ma
passion : l’élevage. Depuis le mois de mars, j’ai ache-
té une maison à Chabanais, avec presque 9 hectares.
Jusqu’ici, je n’avais pas de terrain, on me le prêtait.
Je stockais le fourrage à un endroit, les chevaux à un
autre, ce n’était pas facile… »

« J’ai effectué des recherches sur les pedigrees et
réalisé bénévolement des stages chez des éleveurs

SERVING A LENGTHY APPRENTICESHIP
"I did my pedigree research, and also did stints, on a vo-
luntary basis, with certain breeders in order to acquire as
much knowledge about the PA horse, and notably with
Pierre-Henri Beillard in the Charente region. I took a keen
interest in one of his horses Moulouki (Amri). The latter was
a very temperamental stallion, and only Pierre-Henri could
enter his box. He was also well acquainted with the late
Robert Mauvy. He was a reference point in the PA world, as,
if I’m not mistaken, he bred Moulouki, and that horse’s sire
Amri (Saadi). He was really up to speed with the bloodlines
of the Tunisian stallions. I also worked with Renée-Laure
Koch. I also had a stint with Marcel Marchadier…"
TAKING A RISK
Once the process of accumulating the necessary know-
how was complete, Anthony Bascle began his search for a
mare, and he set his sights on acquiring Jerda (Moulouki).
"Being a daughter of Moulouki and Marinella (In Chaalah),
this mare hailed from a bloodline in which I held great store
by. So I contacted her owners. The mare was ageing, as
she must have been over 20-years-old, and had only ever
produced three foals for Paul Barth... and furthermore she
wasn’t for sale (chuckling). The mare was very much part
of the furniture, and they were surprised by my approach.
I eventually managed to buy her, and went to pick her up,
in the company of my father, at Belfort. My unshakeable
belief in her was reflected in the fact that I was prepared
to make the trip from the Charente-Maritime region (chu-
ckling). I took a big risk as, in the first two years, she was
barren. It was third time lucky with her as a result of bree-
ding her to Darike (Dormane), did the trick. The end result
was Kamila, who is the grandam of Djafar. I was fortunate in
that the mare produced a filly." Kamila was broken in and
she underwent the pre-training process, but never raced.
He added: "I eventually decided to keep her as a broo-
dmare. I decided to breed her to Munjiz (Kesberoy), as a
result of meeting Martial Boisseuil. He showed me some
photos of Munjiz's dam, Unchainedd Melody (ZT Ali Baba).
Furthermore, François Rohaut, the trainer of Munjiz, was
unstinting in his praise for the sire." The resulting mating
produced Badira (Munjiz), the mother of Djafar, and who, in
common with her dam, never saw the racecourse.
PATIENCE
"You have to be patient and need remember that,
when you believe in something, you can achieve your
goal. It has taken me a while to do so. After picking
up Jerda years ago, I believed in what I was doing.
I even took some photos of the edifice which acted
as a home to the mare, so as to have the necessary
memories. She had to cope with the harsh climatic
conditions, as it wasn’t uncommon for the snow to

afin d’en savoir le plus possible sur le pur-sang arabe,
notamment chez Pierre-Henri Beillard en Charente.
Son Moulouki (Amri) m’intéressait. C’était un étalon
avec beaucoup de tempérament, seul Pierre-Henri
pouvait entrer dans son box. Il connaissait bien éga-
lement le regretté Robert Mauvy, une référence en ce
qui concerne le pur-sang arabe. Il a fait naître Mou-
louki et son père, Amri (Saadi). Il connaissait bien
toute cette lignée d’étalons tunisiens. J’ai travaillé
également chez Renée-Laure Koch. Et un stage chez
Marcel Marchadier… »
UNE PRISE DE RISQUE
Le travail de connaissance effectué, Anthony Bascle
s’est mis à la recherche d’une jument et son choix s’est
porté sur Jerda (Moulouki). « Par Moulouki et Marinella
(In Chaalah), cette jument descendait d’une lignée en
laquelle je croyais beaucoup. J’ai contacté ses proprié-
taires. La jument était âgée, devait avoir plus de 20ans,
n’avait eu que trois produits chez Paul Barth… et elle
n’était pas à vendre (rires). Elle faisait un peu partie de
la famille et ils étaient étonnés de ma démarche. J’ai
finalement réussi à l’avoir et je suis allé la chercher avec
mon père du côté de Belfort. J’y croyais tellement que
j’étais prêt à faire le déplacement de Charente-Mari-
time (rires). J’ai pris un gros risque, car les deux pre-
mières années, elle n’a pas pris. J’ai réussi à avoir un
produit d’elle à la troisième tentative en la croisant avec
Darike (Dormane). D’où Kamila, la deuxième mère de
Djafar. J’ai eu de la chance qu’elle donne une pou-
liche. » Débourrée et mise au pré-entraînement, Kamila
n’a pas couru : «  J’ai finalement décidé de la conser-
ver comme poulinière. Et j’ai choisi de la croiser avec
Munjiz (Kesberoy), après une rencontre avec Martial
Boisseuil, qui m’avait montré des photos de la mère de
Munjiz, Unchainedd Melody (ZT Ali Baba). Par ailleurs,
François Rohaut, qui avait eu Munjiz à l’entraînement,
m’en avait dit beaucoup de bien. » Le croisement a
donné Badira (Munjiz), la mère de Djafar, une jument
qui n’a pas couru, comme sa mère.
LA PATIENCE
«  Il faut être patient et ne pas oublier que lorsqu’on
croit dans quelque chose, on peut y arriver. Il m’a fallu
du temps. Je suis allé chercher Jerda il y a des années
mais j’y croyais. J’avais même pris des photos de la
maison où la jument stationnait pour avoir des souve-
nirs. Elle vivait dans un climat rude, où il n’était pas
rare qu’il y ait de la neige en hiver. D’ailleurs, Djafar a
toujours vécu dehors. Comme je n’avais pas beaucoup
de terrain à l’époque, il avait juste un abri et n’a jamais
connu un box avant de partir au débourrage. Il était
habitué au grand air… »

to make do with a field shelter, and he was totally
alien to being stabled indoors until such time that
he was broken-in. He was used to being out in the
fresh air…"
A LATE BLOOMER
"Djafar was born in June 2017. Initially, I had tried to get
Badira (Munjiz) in-foal to Jalnar Al Khalidiah (Tiwaiq) using

« Djafar est né en juin 2017. Au départ, j’avais tenté
de faire saillir Badira (Munjiz) par Jalnar Al Khalidiah
(Tiwaiq), en semence congelée. Mais cela n’a pas
marché. Je l’ai dirigée ensuite vers Dahess. Mais là
encore, cela n’a pas fonctionné tout de suite, d’où
sa naissance tardive. Avec la pandémie de la Co-
vid, j’avais récupéré le cheval qui était chez Thomas
Fourcy, ce qui lui a permis de lui redonner un bon
break. Il a ensuite débuté en hiver, sur la fibrée de

the frozen semen sample process. However, it failed. So I
subsequently bred her to Dahess. Yet again, things didn’t
pan out straight away, which explains why he was a late
foal. The Covid pandemic coincided with the horse being
returned to my care, having previously been based with
Thomas Fourcy, which resulted in the horse having ano-
ther good break. He then made his debut during the win-
ter, on the Pau fibresand, and, following his second start,
he was sold to racenin Qatar. Djafar will be a 6-year-old in
2023, and is very much a new horse."
THE NEXT GENERATION
"Djafar is the second foal of Badira. Her first foal, Gha-
ni (General), didn’t have the temperament for racing,
and, despite being gelded, it made no difference. So
I sold him as an endurance racing prospect, and he has
proved himself in that sphere, having finished second
in a 100km class race. The PA 3-year-old Makhloufi (Al
Mourtajez) is in training with Thomas Fourcy. However,
he’s a late developer, in common with Djafar, and has
yet to see the racecourse. I also have the filly Maimana
(Al Mouwaffak), who will be a two-year-old in 2023. Her
full brother, Mahdy (Al Mouwaffak), a chestnut colt, was
born in May."

« Djafar est le deuxième produit de Badira. Le pre-
mier, Ghani (General), n’avait pas le mental et malgré
la castration, cela n’a rien changé. Je l’ai vendu pour
l’endurance où il s’est révélé et a de bons résultats, se
classant deuxième d’une épreuve sur 100 km. Le 3ans
Makhloufi (Al Mourtajez) est à l’entraînement chez Tho-
mas Fourcy. Mais il est tardif, comme Djafar, et n’a pas
encore débuté. J’ai également Maimana (Al Mouwaf-
fak), une pouliche qui va prendre 2ans. Ainsi que son
propre frère, Mahdy (Al Mouwaffak), un mâle alezan né
en mai dernier. »

AUCTAV STAGES A FURTHER PA SALE
UNE NOUVELLE VENTE DE PUR-SANG ARABES CHEZ AUCTAV
At the backend of 2022, the Auctav sales agency will
be staging two breeding stock sales. The first one, sche-
duled for November 23rd, will be the sole preserve of PA
horses. The second one, on December 1 , and open to

thoroughbreds, will comprise broodmares, fillies coming
out of training, foals, and stallions which transcend all
equestrian disciplines.
On November 23 , a new auction restricted to PA
rd
horses, will offer a breeding-stock orientated catalogue,
which consists of broodmares, mares coming out of trai-
ning, stallions and stallion shares.
The Auctav Arabian Autumn Sale, a joint partnership
venture in tandem with AFAC, will be conducted online
on the auctav.com platform at 11.30am local time, for a
period of 30 minutes, with closing bids for the lots on
offer due to elapse every three minutes.
The closing date for those wishing to be catalogued in
the sale is October 21 . st
The updates, in recent weeks, relative to past Auctav
sales, are as follows:
• The win of Nour Al Maury (Azadi) victory in the Qatar
Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (open to PA 3-year-old
fillies), put the July sale in the spotlight, as that’s where
her 2-year-old full brother No Reply Al Maury (Azadi)
was sold for €150,000 to Saubouas Bloodstock.

ciplines hippiques.
Le 23 novembre, une nouvelle session réservée aux
pur-sang arabes va proposer un catalogue tourné vers
l’élevage composé de poulinières, juments sortant de
l’entraînement, étalons ou parts d’étalons.
L’Auctav Arabian Autumn Sale, toujours en partenariat
avec l’Afac, se tiendra sur auctav.com à 11 h 30 pour
30 minutes, avec une clôture pour les lots toutes les
trois minutes.
La clôture des inscriptions est fixée au 21 octobre.
Ces dernières semaines, l’actualité a mis en avant la
sélection des précédentes ventes Auctav.
• La victoire de Nour Al Maury (Azadi) dans le Qa-

lumière la vente, en juillet, de son propre frère de
2ans No Reply Al Maury (Azadi), acheté 150.000 €

half-brother of Sultana (AF Al Buraq), who was third
in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments (open to
PA 4-year-old fillies).
• We must also highlight the purchase of Neige Al
Maury (Dormane), a €92,000 acquisition of the Ha-
ras de Thouars. As she’s the sister to the dam of the
outstanding performer Lady Princess (General), the
winner of the 2022 Qatar Arabian World Cup

L’Auctav Arabian Autumn Sale, qui devait être centrée sur un catalogue élevage, prend un tout autre visage. Elle va finalement être
étendue à des lots plus orientés entraînement. Et grande première pour Auctav, une session réservée à une sélection de chevaux
d’endurance de l’élevage Bozouls va également être organisée.
Arnaud Angéliaume, directeur général d’Auctav, a déclaré : « Nous étions vraiment persuadés que la demande viendrait sur la
partie élevage. Et alors que nous avons conclu les inscriptions le 21 octobre pour ce volet, nous avons aussi des demandes pour
inscrire des lots hors des critères élevage que nous avions déterminés. Le marché des pur-sang arabes est vraiment dynamique et
même si nous prenons de l’expérience, nous apprenons énormément des éleveurs, entraîneurs et de l’AFAC qui est partenaire de

I Want The Winner will undertake one of its most high
profile sales on December 8. As an auction, dedicated
solely to the PA horse, will see the broodmare band of
Sheail Bin Khalifa Al Kuwari come under the hammer. His
colours have been in the spotlight for several seasons
now, thanks to Lady Princess (General), whose nine Gr1
PA wins have been gained in France and abroad, and Mo-
shrif (Dahess). The latter, a recent Gr1 PA winner in Tou-
louse, has also annexed the HH The Amir Silver Sword...
The catalogue includes mares with exceptional pe-
digrees, and ones which hail from the lines of Nevada II
(Djanor) and Mandore (Grabiec). They include dams of
winners, the sisters of black type performers, and mares
certified in-foal to No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy), Dahess
(Amer) and Nieshan (Akbar), plus the young sire Mashhur
Al Khalediah (Jalnar Al Khalediah). The catalogue, com-
plete with photos and videos, is due to come out on 8
November. All PA fillies/mares in the sale are the subject
of veterinary certificates of sale.
The lots in question are currently based at the Haras de Saint
Faust at Laroin (Pyrénées Atlantiques region); and visits are
possible by appointment. The sale is being organised, as
the above mentioned Qatari owner is reducing his bree-
ding stock interests. He reasoned: "Our broodmare band is
the fruit of many years of work and selection. The success
of our breeding operation lies in the fact that we have now
assimilated the very best bloodlines, sometimes in dupli-
cate and triplicate, and so we are in a positon whereby we
can contemplate reducing some of our stock. The sale, or-
ganised by I Want The Winner, a trusted partner, will be a
unique opportunity to acquire some valuable broodmares."

UPDATE ON PA RACING TAKING PLACE ON THE
SAUDI CUP WEEKEND
LES COURSES DE PUR-SANG ARABES DU WEEK-END DE LA SAUDI CUP
The International Federation of Arabian Horse Ra-
cing Authorities (IFHAR) has given updates on two races
which will grace the Saudi Cup weekend (24th and 25th
February, 2023), and the Obaiya Arabian Classic (whose
purse is $2 million) has become a Gr1 PA race. The 2022
edition was won by Hadi de Carrère (Nieshan). Similar-
ly, the Al Mneefah Cup (which carries prize money of
$1 million) has been elevated from L PA to Gr2 PA sta-
tus. This year’s edition was won by First Classs (Dahess).
His Royal Highness Prince Bandar Bin Khalid Al Faisal,
the President of the Saudi Arabian Jockey Club, said:
"Our commitment to securing the future of Arabian
thoroughbred racing is demonstrated by the progress
we are making. We look forward to welcoming the best
Arabian horses from around the world during the Saudi
Cup weekend."

courses du week-end de la Saudi Cup (24 et 25 février)
changeaient d’échelon. L’Obaiya Arabian Classic (deux
millions de dollars d’allocations) devient un Gr1 PA.
L’édition 2022 a été remportée par Hadi de Carrère
(Nieshan). L’Al Mneefah Cup (un million de dollars d’al-
locations) passe de L PA à Gr2 PA. La dernière édition
est revenue à First Classs (Dahess). Son Altesse Royale

Khalifa Al Attiya, the Managing Director of Al
Shaqab Racing, the owner-breeders of Al Hakeem,
gave us an insight into his thoughts a few hours be-
fore the Arc...
JDG Arabians. – Al Shaqab Racing's stallion division is
proving to be very strong in the PA world. Furthermore,
Al Mourtajez and Mister Ginoux are the best young PA
stallions at a global level.
Khalifa Al Attiya. – We came into racing via the medium
of the PA horse. In fact we started out in this domain
as of 2011. Our very first Gr1 winner was a PA horse,
Al Nachmiya (Azadi). She landed the same race that
Nour Al Maury [editor’s note: Qatar Arabian Trophy des
Pouliches] has just won! Her son Mwarid (Amer) will carry
our colours in the Qatar Arabian World Cup. We have
around 200 PA horses in France, including 60 brood-
mares and 45 horses-in-training.
Five years ago, Al Shaqab Racing had 63 runners du-
ring the course of the season in Qatar. Yet the equi-
valent figure for the 2021-2022 season had tripled!
We are in the process of enhancing the number of
horses we have in Qatar, with particular regard to the
PA breed. Our goal is to have 60 horses in training. We

already have 25 broodmares in our stables at Doha. The
quality of local racing has improved greatly in the last
few years. Given the relatively new race programmes of-
fered by the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia, it
will be very interesting to see how our horses perform in
the region.
At the time of writing, you have horses with 22
different French trainers. Why is this?
The idea is simply not to put all our eggs in one bas-
ket. We also believe that each type of horse needs
to be matched up according to a particular trainer's
profile. Sometimes, the mere fact of buying horses in
partnership enables us to work with a new professional.
What does it mean to you to have one of your home-
breds contest the Arc?
The breeding wing of Al Shaqab Racing is barely
10 years ago. Our first crop of foals numbered just
four, and they included Doha Dream (Shamardal).
He was our very first homebred to contest the Arc.
Al Hakeem (Siyouni) will be our second, and six
generations of Haras de Bouquetot born and bred
horses have to date graced the track [editor’s note:
Al Hakeem ran fourth in the Arc].
We know the colt inside out. As we have seen him
grow up and, from the outset, he stood out from the
crowd. We have had high hopes in him for a long
time. Breeding is a game of patience. To have a

qu’offrent les Émirats arabes unis et l’Arabie Saoudite,
il sera très intéressant de voir comment nos chevaux se
comportent dans la région.
À l’heure où sont écrites ces lignes, vous avez des chevaux
chez 22 entraîneurs français différents. Pour quelle raison ?
L’idée est tout simplement de ne pas mettre tous ses
œufs dans le même panier. Nous croyons par ailleurs que
chaque type de cheval correspond à un profil d’entraîneur.
Et parfois, le fait d’acheter des chevaux en association nous
permet de travailler avec un nouveau professionnel.
Avoir un partant dans l’Arc issu de votre élevage,
que cela représente-t-il pour vous ? 
Nous avons lancé l’élevage d’Al Shaqab Racing il y
a à peine 10 ans. Notre première génération, avec
quatre foals, comprenait Doha Dream (Shamardal). Il a
été notre tout premier élève à courir l’Arc. Al Hakeem
(Siyouni) sera donc le deuxième, alors que nous en
sommes à six générations de produits nés et élevés au
haras de Bouquetot en piste [Al Hakeem s’est finale-
ment classé quatrième de l’Arc, ndlr]
Nous le connaissons parfaitement. Nous l’avons vu
grandir et dès le départ, il est sorti du lot. Cela fait
longtemps que nous nourrissons de grands espoirs à
son sujet. L’élevage est un jeu de patience. Et c’est une

product of your own breeding operation, carrying
the colours of Al Shaqab Racing in the world’s most
prestigious prize, is an even greater reward.
As happens each year, this race acts as a magnet to
numerous good horses. We hope that Al Hakeem's
good draw will work in his favour. This is the 15th
time that the Arc has been sponsored by Qatar. That
makes it all the more special for us.
What other horses will Al Shaqab be running at the
weekend?
Place du Carrousel (Lope de Vega) delighted us in the
spring, and she will reappear in the Prix l'Opéra (Gr1)
[editor's note: a race she went on to win]. We are antici-
pating a good performance from her. In the PA domain,
Al Wakrah (TM Fred Texas) contested the Qatar Arabian
Trophy des Juments (Gr1 PA), and Mwarid (Amer) has
been earmarked for the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1
PA) on Sunday. It’s a real source of pride as both are
products of Al Shaqab Racing, and Qatari jockey Faleh
Bughenaim has been pencilled in for the ride on both
horses. He rode Al Shaqab Racing’s Nour Al Maury to
victory in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1
PA) [editor’s note: at Saint-Cloud on September 30th].

Al Shaqab Racing will also make its presence felt du-
ring this weekend thanks to the sponsorship of the
Haras de Bouquetot–Critérium Arqana. The event
has been well subscribed to, as 17 were declared to
run in it. How do you see this race developing?
This sponsorship is very important to us. As this auc-
tion race doesn’t offer premiums proportional to prize
money levels, we wanted to seize this opportunity by
rewarding the breeders in another way. So the breeders
of the first three will each be entitled to a free nomina-
tion for their mares. Without the breeders, there would
be no horses... and no racing. Since we have a subs-
tantial stallion roster – and in mathematical terms – the
ensuing offspring will constitute a numerous presence
in the sales rings. So this race is a veritable boost for the
yearling market.

Ce sponsoring est très important à nos yeux. Cette auc-
tion race n’offrant pas une prime proportionnelle à
l’allocation, nous avons voulu saisir l’opportunité de
récompenser les éleveurs d’une autre manière. Les
éleveurs des trois premiers vont en effet bénéficier de
saillies gratuites. Sans les éleveurs, pas de chevaux…
et pas de courses ! Étant donné que nous stationnions
beaucoup d’étalons, mathématiquement leur
descendance est nombreuse sur les rings de vente. Et
cette course est un réel encouragement pour le marché
des yearlings.

JARIF SCORES A BLOODLESS WIN
IN THE PREMIO MILANO JOCKEY-CLUB
JARIF SANS OPPOSITION DANS LE PREMIO MILANO JOCKEY CLUB
In the Premio Milano Jockey Club PSA (Gr3 PA) in
Milan on 16 October, Jarif (Dahess) scored another Ita-
lian win, but he didn’t have to dig deep to do so. This
marked the fourth Group win of the the partnership
comprising Haif Mohammed Al Ghatani, the Haras de
Rabodanges and Haseg. In common with his dam, the
outstanding Kiss de Ghazal (Dormane), the Élisabeth
Bernard-trained runner carries the colours of Haif Mo-
hammed Al Ghatani, the Saudi Arabian owner who was
a prolific buyer at the recent Arc sale. Jarif cruised his
way to victory in the final stages of the Premio Milano
Jockey Club PSA (Gr3 PA), comfortably accounted for
Ayman (General). The pacesetting Mayar Al Khalediah
(Nashwan Al Khalidiah) held third.
Ayman shine at Chilivani
Prior to the above Milanese Group prize, and further south,
the PA division went head to head in Sardinia. As on Sep-
tember 17th, Chilivani racecourse hosted the Sheikh Zayed
Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (L PA) over 2,400m (12f). Ayman (Ge-
neral), bred by His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Khalifa
Al Thani, won the race. Trained in Sweden, he crossed the
European continent from north to south so as to pursue his
Italian campaign. Ayman races in the colours of his trainer,
Maria Hagman-Eriksson. The locally-trained Amour (Filin-
deu) and Bellagioia (Filindeu) were second and third.

Le 16 octobre à Milan, dans le Premio Milano Joc-
key Club PSA (Gr3 PA), Jarif (Dahess) s’est offert une
nouvelle victoire italienne sans avoir à puiser dans ses
réserves. C’est la quatrième victoire de Groupe d’Haif

Ayman brille à Chilivani

Arqana PA Sale Analysis
A SALE THAT WILL LINGER LONG IN THE MEMORY
UNE ÉDITION QUI VA RESTER DANS LES ANNALES
Prior to events, one would have thought that
proliferation of online sales in the PA sector would
weaken the traditional PA Saint-Cloud sale organised
jointly by Arqana and AFAC. In fact, only 84 horses
went through the ring on September 29 , compared

to the 100 or so figure of previous years. However,
it was obvious from the moment that the very first
lots went through the ring, that sale activity was
very strong. In the final analysis, turnover increased
by 75 per cent to the tune of 3.49 million euros. The
very core of the sale, namely the 2-year-old sector,
returned an average price of €58,400, compared
to €30,964 last year. This represents an increase of
88.61 per cent. Lastly, 16 lots in all categories, made
€100,000 or more. This compares to two last year.
Thierry Delègue signed the docket (€300,000) for
the sale topper, Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz), who came
packaged with an entry in the Qatar Arabian Tro-
phy des Juments (Gr1 PA). He was acting on behalf
of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Zayed Al Na-
hyan. The latter purchased several well-bred fil-
lies/mares at the sale. Alban de Mieulle was the
top buyer with 12 lots, for a total shopping bill of
1.3 million euros, and which were all acquired for the
new Qatari concern, Wathnan Racing. The Haras de
Victot topped the vendors’ list.

Avant le coup, on aurait pu penser que la multiplica-
tion des ventes en ligne dédiées aux pur-sang arabes
allait affaiblir la traditionnelle vacation de Saint-Cloud
organisée par Arqana et l’Afac. Et de fait, seulement
84 chevaux sont passés sur le ring le 29 septembre,
contre une centaine les années précédentes. Mais dès
les premiers lots, il était évident que la vente était très
forte. Quand au moins deux personnes veulent les
mêmes chevaux… tout en ayant des moyens, les prix
montent. Finalement, le chiffre d’affaires progresse de
75 % pour s’établir à 3,49 millions d’euros. Le cœur de
la vente, c’est-à-dire les 2ans, atteint un prix de moyen
de 58.400 €, contre 30.964 € l’année dernière. C’est
une progression de 88,61 %. Et 16 lots (toutes caté-
gories confondues) ont atteint la barre des 100.000 €.
Ils étaient deux dans ce cas l’année dernière. Thierry
Delègue a signé le bon à 300.000 € pour le top price,
Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz), une pouliche qui disposait
d’un engagement dans le Qatar Arabian Trophy des
Juments (Gr1 PA). Il agissait pour le compte de Son Al-

offert plusieurs femelles bien nées lors de cette vente.
Alban de Mieulle termine top-acheteur avec 12 lots,
pour 1,3 million d’euros, tous acquis pour Wathnan Ra-
cing, nouvelle entité qatarie. Et c’est d’ailleurs le haras
de Victot qui termine en tête des vendeurs.

THE 2-YEAR-OLD SECTOR DELIVERS SOME IM-
PRESSIVE RETURNS
When taking into account the costs of producing horses (and
by way of example, the stud fees are lower compared to En-
glish thoroughbreds), the returns generated proved quite ex-
ceptional. So let the facts speak for themselves! Taking into
account the 2022 sale as a whole, the average price paid for a
PA 2-year-old was almost 13 times higher than the relevant co-
vering fee (the average being €3,500). The equivalent figures
in 2019 and 2020 were respectively 8.7 and 6.7. The sale of
an English thoroughbred yearling is considered to be at the
right level when the sale price is three times the covering fee.
When compared to the prices paid for lots at the August and
October sales at Deauville... this is huge by comparison!
UNE MARGE IMPRESSIONNANTE CHEZ LES 2ANS
Compte tenu du coût de production des pur-
sang arabes (avec, par exemple, des prix de sail-
lie moindres par rapport aux pur-sang anglais), les
chiffres sont assez exceptionnels. N’ayons pas peur
des mots ! Sur la totalité de la vente 2022, le prix
moyen des 2ans arabes était presque 13 fois plus
élevé que celui des saillies (moyenne de 3.500 €).
En 2019, ce rapport était de 8,7 et de 6,7 en 2020.
Or, on considère que la vente d’un yearling pur-sang
anglais est correcte lorsque son montant représente
trois fois le prix de saillie. Comparez avec la vente
d’août et d’octobre à Deauville… et vous verrez que
c’est énorme !

A €100,000 purchase, lot 24 is a sister to the very smart

(Kerbella), cost a mere €16,000 at the Arqana sales!
FLEUR DU SOLEIL FETCHES €300,000
The winner on August 8 in the colours of the Haras de
l’Aigle, Fleur du Soleil (Munjiz) came packaged with her
entry in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments (Gr1 PA).
A €300,000 buy, she will join Sheikh Mansour’s broo-
dmare band. Hers is a very regal pedigree. Her dam,
Theeba (Amer), the Hatta International Stakes (Gr1 PA)
third, has already produced Methgal (Tm Fred Texas):
the winner of the Qatar International Cup (Gr1 PA). The
grandam is the much vaunted Massamarie (Tidjani), and
herself the source of four Gr1 PA winners, including His
Highness Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani’s outstan-
ding Ebraz (Amer), who won 18 races during his career.

Alban de Mieulle has a long history of working in Qatar,
and notably at Umm Qarn, the stud and training centre
associated with His Highness Sheikh Abdullah Bin Kha-
lifa Al Thani. Umm Qarn has since been sold to another
member of the Al Thani family. On Thursday, September
29th at Saint-Cloud, he signed the dockets for 12 lots,
eight of which fetched €100,000 or more. The most ex-
pensive of these, Anouar (Al Tair), cost €250,000. He ope-
ned his account at the third attempt for the trainer-owner
combination of Jean de Mieulle and His Highness Sheikh
Abdullah Bin Khalifa Al Thani. The 12 lots comprise three
well-bred PA 2-year-olds. A €120,000 buy, lot 34 is a full
brother to Prix Tidjani (Gr3 PA) winner Ahzar (Munjiz),
whereas the great-grandam has yielded the outstanding
Kerra (Kesberoy). Alban de Mieulle said of the Haras de
Mandore-bred (consigned by The Channel Consignment):
"He’s a very nice colt with a superb pedigree page". Lot
25, a €105,000 buy, is a son of Al Mamun Monlau (Mu-
njiz). Bred at the Haras du Grand Courgeon, the dam has
already produced Khataab (Amer), a winner at Gr1 PA le-
vel, and second in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr1 PA).
Alban de Mieulle said: "I think he’s a good horse. We are
well acquainted with him as we bred him!".

la famille Al Thani. Le 29 septembre à Saint-Cloud, il a

Khalid Alsayed was on-hand to personally inspect his pur-
chases at Saint-Cloud. The Saudi Arabian national hails
from the show horse world, and he signed the dockets
for four lots, three of which are 2-year-olds, with the other
being a yearling. On the subject of lot 4, he said: "He
will head directly to Saudi Arabia. I’ve only just recently
dabbling in horse racing, and was a buyer at the Shadwell
dispersal sales. Our initial results at the track are proving
promising." A graduate of Bruno Bellaud’s renowned
breeding operation, this filly is by one of the leading US
sires, Burning Sand (San Lou Romirz), and an influence for
speed and capable of siring both turf and dirt horses.
The grandam, Nisaee (Dormane), was a multiple winner
in Qatar. Her numerous descendants include seven black

successful with his initial crop of PA 3-year-olds.
The dam is a full sister to Balladore (Dormane), and the
latter has already produced the excellent Amyr du Soleil
(Amer), the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA)
victor, and Dormah de Brugère (Dormane), whose seven
races wins included the Jumeirah International Stakes
and the Arabian International Stakes (Grs2 PA). The great
grandam is the celebrated Bergeronnette (Djouran): one
of the blue hen broodmares we associate with Haras de
Pompadour. Bergeronnette is the source – at either first,
second or third generation level – of numerous black
type class performers in the mould of Dahor de Brugère
(Dahess) and Mahess du Soleil (Dahess)…

UNE FIN OU UN NOUVEAU DÉPART ?
The dynamic nature of the French PA market
was recently the talk of Paris. However, across the
channel, its British counterpart faces challenges that
could easily jeopardise its future. It’s not the end as
such, but it could be a cause of concern for all those
within the PA racing sector.
In a recent press release which was diffused to the me-
dia, the chairman of the Arabian Racing Organisation
(ARO), Charles Gregson, drew attention to a number of
worrying signs such as the decline in the numbers of PA
horses in training, and the costs involved in staging PA
racing. ARO is unique among the European Arabian ra-
cing organisations in that it receives no outside funding.
Despite this, it has to pay the racecourses, plus the Bri-
tish Horseracing Authority (BHA) for use of their tracks
and officials. Income is generated via registration and
entry fees, plus management fees derived from spon-
sorship, and so any decline in the horse population is
keenly felt. This means that any races attracting less than
seven runners this season are as such loss makers. This is
clearly an unsustainable situation in the long term.
THE SUPPORT PROVIDED BY AFAC
Jean-Pierre Deroubaix, the bloodstock agent and
consultant, has been a well-known figure in the PA ra-
cing scene for 20 years, whose reputation extends
to countries such as Oman and Qatar. He also sits on
the executive committee of IFHAR (International Fede-

toutes les conversations à Paris, outre-Manche, la
filière fait face à des challenges qui pourraient com-
promettre son avenir. On n’en est pas encore au clap
de fin. Mais le simple fait que cela puisse être le cas
fait naître de réelles inquiétudes dans toute la filière
du pur-sang arabe.
Dans un communiqué de presse récemment envoyé à
la presse, Charles Gregson, président de l’ARO, a atti-
ré l’attention sur l’inquiétante baisse des effectifs. Tout
comme les coûts de fonctionnement du sport hippique
en Grande-Bretagne. L’ARO est l’une des seules enti-
tés organisatrices de courses de pur-sang arabes en
Europe à ne recevoir aucun financement systémique.
Pourtant, elle doit dans le même temps payer des
droits aux hippodromes et à la B.H.A. pour l’utilisa-
tion des pistes et des officiels. Dès lors, les rentrées
d’argent viennent des inscriptions, des engagements
et des frais de gestion des sponsorings de course. Si
bien que toute baisse dans les effectifs a des consé-
quences désastreuses. Cela signifie que les courses à
moins de sept partants sont organisées à pertes. Une
situation non soutenable sur le long terme.
L'AIDE DE L’AFAC
Courtier et consultant, Jean-Pierre Deroubaix est une
personnalité bien connue de la filière pur-sang arabe
depuis deux décennies, d’Oman au Qatar. Il fait partie

ration of Arabian Horse Racing). He said: "I’m also an
elected member of AFAC (Association Française du
Cheval Arabe de Course) and we’re mindful of ARO’s
difficult situation. It’s such a pity. As, since the death of
Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, we realise there are not
enough PA horses in Great Britain. It’s a big problem for
us all. This highlights the need for competition, an in-
ternational racing calendar and ownership. Personally, I
think we need to convince some of the big owners in
the Gulf States to have PA horses trained in Britain so
as to support the domestic racing scene, and to conti-
nue the sponsorship arrangements which are in place.
The PA Group races at Goodwood will continue. As will
the sponsorship provided by the Royal Cavalry of Oman,
the United Arab Emirates and His Highness Sheikh Man-
soor Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. However, with so few runners
trained in Britain contesting them – it’s a nonsense. As
you can’t have PA Group races in which the runners are
all trained outside Britain!
So we will try to talk to the racing managers, who can
explain to the big bosses that we need to embrace the
spirit of competition. We need these PA Group races if
we are to upgrade the quality of our stock. There is no
room for more PA Group races in France. "
ARO IS SEEKING SPONSORS FOR ITS PA GROUP PRIZES
The loss of the Dubai International Arabian races (DIAR)
card, Britain’s flagship PA event, was always going to
have a very negative impact.
The Za’abeel International Stakes (Gr 2 PA), a sprint, was
annexed on three occasions by both Dahess (Amer) and
Al Mouhannad (Nizam). Since 2021, this race has been
sponsored by the Royal Cavalry of Oman. The race conti-

suis également élu à l’Afac et nous sommes attentifs
à la situation de l’ARO. C’est un vrai gâchis. Depuis la
mort du cheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum, on voit claire-
ment qu’il n’y a pas assez de chevaux en Grande-Bre-
tagne. C’est un problème qui nous concerne tous. Car
nous avons besoin de compétitions internationales,
d’un programme européen, de propriétaires… À titre
personnel, je pense qu’il faut convaincre les acteurs
internationaux de la nécessité de conserver des che-
vaux à l’entraînement en Grande-Bretagne, pour sou-
tenir leur programme et pérenniser les sponsorings.
Bien sûr, il y a des courses de Groupe à Goodwood. Le
sponsoring de la Royal Cavalry of Oman, des Émirats
et de Son Altesse le cheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Na-
hyan continue. Mais avec si peu de chevaux entraînés
localement, cela en devient un non-sens. On ne peut
pas organiser des courses uniquement avec des sujets
venus de l’étranger !
Nous allons essayer de parler aux managers pour
qu’ils expliquent à leurs patrons que nous avons be-
soin de compétition. Et de Groupes pour valoriser
nos chevaux. La France ne peut pas accepter plus de
Groupes. »
À LA RECHERCHE DE SPONSORS
La perte des Dubai International Arabian Races, le
porte-étendard du programme britannique, a eu un
impact très négatif.
Les Za'abeel International Stakes (Gr2 PA), un sprint,
ont été remportés trois fois par Dahess (Amer) et Al
Mouhannad (Nizam). Depuis 2021, la course fait par-
tie des épreuves sponsorisées par la Royal Cavalry of

nues to be run at Newbury, and the home-trained Ekleel
Athbah (Laith Al Khalediah) scored a narrow victory over
the Omani-owned Fateenah (Dahess) this season.
In July, Sheikh Mansoor took over the sponsorship of the
Hatta International Stakes. Rechristened the H.H. Sheikh
Mansoor – Liwa International Stakes, it was transferred to
La Teste in France. The race was won by Elaf (Rabbah de
Carrère). This ensured the future of the Gr1 PA contest
open to fillies/mares. This is important for the European
PA Group race calendar and the selectivity of the breed.
However, Genny Haynes, the ARO chief executive officer,
affirms that they are still actively seeking sponsors for the
two other Group races which were formerly part of the
DIAR card: namely the Gr1 PA contest over 2,000m, and
the Gr2 PA prize for 3-year-olds over 1,400m (7f). Similar-
ly, two other contests, the Gr1 PA race over 1,600m (1m),
plus a Gr3 PA sprint over 1,000m (5f), are also devoid of
sponsorship. They could easily form the basis of an ex-
citing deal for a potential new sponsor wishing to gain a
foothold in the sport, and within British racing in general.
A STRONG PLATFORM ON WHICH TO BUILD THE
FUTURE
Genny Haynes added: "With the odds increasingly sta-
cked against us, we have risen to these challenges by
providing competitive racing, at all levels, in 2022. Given
that less than 50 domestic PA horses have raced this sea-
son, our field sizes have averaged 6.7 runners (across 22
races) per race. Furthermore, the number of owners has
increased compared to last year. Our Gr1 races conti-
nue to attract some of the very best PA horses such as
Lady Princess (General), Hattal (Mahabb) and First
Classs (Dahess). Consequently, the ratings of these
races, and their place within the international pattern
calendar, is assured."
Genny Haynes is also pleased to report that more bet-
ting firms are now pricing up ARO races online. Although
small commissions are derived from bets taken both on
and off-course, in addition to online betting on the Tote,
it’s actually the position of a PA race on predominantly
English thoroughbred cards that has the greatest impact
on betting turnover, and by default the income streams
derived from this source.
As such PA races have yet to be fully integrated within
the BHA’s race planning structure – and are currently li-
mited to being either the first or seventh race on the
card, or even further down the line, which is situation
which could at least a further two years to resolve. Gen-
ny Haynes added: "However, we’ve been hugely en-
couraged by the increase in terrestrial and satellite TV
coverage of our racing, which has extended to the inter-
viewing of our owners, trainers and jockeys. It has taken
longer than we would like. Yet we genuinely feel that

sans mécène, l’ensemble présente un réel potentiel
pour un nouveau sponsor souhaitant mettre un pied
dans le pur-sang arabe. Et dans les courses britan-
niques en général.
UNE BONNE BASE POUR L’AVENIR
Genny Haynes poursuit : « Les éléments ont joué en
notre défaveur. Mais nous avons fait face en parvenant
à organiser des courses compétitives en 2022. Avec
moins de 50 chevaux entraînés localement cette saison,
nous avons néanmoins une moyenne de 6,7 partants
sur 22 épreuves. Et le nombre de propriétaires a aug-
menté depuis l’année dernière. Nos Grs1 continuent
à attirer certains des meilleurs chevaux, à l’image de
Lady Princess (General), Hattal (Mahabb) et First Classs
(Dahess). Ainsi le rating et la place de ces épreuves est
préservée dans le calendrier international. »
Genny Haynes constate par ailleurs que de plus en plus
de bookmakers proposent des côtes en ligne sur les
courses de l’ARO. L’association récupère une petite
commission pour les paris sur les hippodromes – et en
dehors –, mais aussi sur le pari mutuel en ligne du Tote.
L’expérience montre que la position d’une course dans
le programme d’une réunion a un impact décisif sur les
enjeux – et donc sur les revenus – qu’elle génère.
Pour l’instant, les courses de pur-sang arabes ne font
pas pleinement partie du calendrier des courses de la
B.H.A. Dès lors, elles sont cantonnées à être la première
ou l’une des dernières courses de la réunion. Il faudra
certainement au moins deux ans pour faire évoluer la si-
tuation. Genny Haynes explique : « Nous sommes bien
soutenus par l’augmentation de notre présence sur les
chaînes de télévision. Pas simplement pour montrer les
épreuves elles-mêmes. Mais aussi pour proposer des
interviews des propriétaires, entraîneurs et jockeys.
Cela a pris plus de temps que nous le pensions. Mais
nous avons le sentiment qu’il s’agit d’un véritable signe

accepted within the orbit of British racing as a whole.
This was always Sheikh Hamdan’s wish. It’s also signifi-
cant that four licensed English thoroughbred trainers
have added PA horses to their strings. There are enqui-
ries from others, including those who train English tho-
roughbreds for Middle Eastern owners. So we know that
this is a workable proposition going forward."
Another positive factor is the overall increase in prize
money levels. As such they don’t stand comparison with
France, but they more than hold their own compared
to countries such as Poland, Belgium, Sweden and Hol-
land, and none of these countries currently stage a Gr1
PA race. ARO has also been able to reinstate breeders’
premiums, which take the form of added prize money
and free stallion nominations.
Investment in the domestic breeding sector is important.
However, the knock-on effects take at least four years to
manifest themselves on the track. So the need for out-
side competition in the races is clear cut. In common
with France, Britain has a long-standing tradition of ac-
ting as a nursery for young PA stock, which are destined
to race in the Gulf States. It’s a proven career pathway
for some, and one trodden successfully by the likes of
Julian Smart and Gill Duffield. The leading ARO trainer
of 2022, Phil Collington, is another case in point. After a
long standing association with Sheikh Hamdan, both as
jockey and trainer, it is now mainly down to the support
provided by the Saudi Arabian concern, Athbah Racing,
that he has enjoyed 13 PA Group successes in Europe
and the Gulf States to date.
Jean-Pierre Deroubaix stresses that increased horse
ownership is good for everyone, as the horses have to
come from somewhere – and France will certainly be a
source in this respect. He said. "I hope, with perseve-
rance, that we will succeed, I don’t want PA racing to
stop in Great Britain, as it will be a disaster for us all."

Nous avons des demandes pour d’autres. Dont certains
ont des chevaux pour des propriétaires du Golfe. C’est
un élément qui nous permettra d’aller de l’avant. »
Autre élément positif, l’amélioration des allocations.
Elles ne soutiennent pas encore la comparaison avec
celles de France, mais elles sont d’un niveau enviable si
l’on regarde vers la Pologne, la Belgique, la Suède, les
Pays-Bas... Soit autant de pays qui n’accueillent pas de
Gr1 PA. L’ARO a réussi à relancer ses primes à l’éleveur
sous forme d’allocations supplémentaires et de saillies
gratuites.
L’investissement dans l’élevage local est réel. Mais
il faudra au moins quatre années pour en voir les
conséquences en piste. À ce stade, le besoin en che-
vaux extérieurs est donc évident. Comme la France,
la Grande-Bretagne a une longue tradition de prépa-
ration de jeunes sujets pour le programme du Golfe.
C’est une manière de faire éprouvée. Elle a été utilisée
par Julian Smart ou encore Gill Duffield. Mais aussi par
Phil Collington, tête de liste 2022, qui continue à em-
prunter cette voie avec succès. Après avoir beaucoup
œuvré au service du cheikh Hamdan, comme jockey et
entraîneur, il est soutenu par les Saoudiens d’Athbah
Racing grâce auxquels il a remporté la majorité de ses
13 victoires de Groupe en Europe et dans le Golfe.
Jean-Pierre Deroubaix met en avant le fait que le déve-
loppement du propriétariat bénéficiera à tous. Car les
chevaux doivent venir de quelque part. Et cela sera cer-
tainement de France : « J’espère que la persévérance
va payer. Je ne veux pas que les courses de pur-sang
arabes cessent en Grande-Bretagne. Ce serait un dé-
sastre pour tout le monde. »

The Amir Sword, Moshrif (Dahess) made a great co-
meback in the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge
Classic – H.H. Sheikh ZBS Al Nahyan (Gr1 PA). Clearly,
the Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari protégé was in a diffe-
rent class to his Toulouse opponents. Olivier Peslier
gave the winner a very patient ride, and approaching
the straight, Moshrif was still among the backmarkers.
Taking time to find his feet, and after challenging on
the outside. Moshrif went on to dominate his stable-
mate Ch'ezza (Af Albahar), who had a wide trip, and
Monda (No Risk Al Maury), who fleetingly appealed
as the winner.
Pas revu depuis février dernier, date de sa victoire

Simplement monté aux bras, Moshrif a alors dominé
d’une classe son compagnon de boxes Ch’ezza (Af Al-
bahar), contraint de voyager en épaisseur, et Monda
(No Risk Al Maury), qui a fait un temps illusion.

Trainer François Rohaut had a 1-2 and he was fulsome
in his praise for Moshrif. He said: "Having reached the
half-way stage in the final turn, he was already being
ridden along, and struggling to keep tabs on his rivals,
but that's Moshrif! He needs to get on an even keel so
as to give of his best, but once he found his feet, which
enabled him to find the necessary elan, the horse pro-
ved a class above the rest. An outstanding champion:
he’s among the great PA horses which I have trained,

sold for €310,000 to His Highness Sheikh Mansour Bin
Zayed Al Nahyan at the Auctav sale. Moshrif is the bro-
ther of four black type performers, including the outs-
tanding and sextuple Gr1 PA winning Muraaqib (Munjiz);
and the Al Maktoum Challenge Round 2 (Gr1 PA) scorer
Barnamaj (No Risk Al Maury). Now a stallion, Barnamaj is
covering in Morocco on behalf of SOREC. Muraaqib be-
gan his stallion career at the Haras de Thouars this year

Sixth in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1
PA) on September 30th over 2,000m, Nadia du Loup (Af
Albahar) had her next outing, three and a half weeks
later, in the Prix Nevada II (Gr3, PA), over 1,600m. The
Yahya Rashid Khamis Al Masruri representative, looking
a totally different animal, brilliantly rehabilitated her-
self, having won a touch cosily. The Élisabeth Ber-
nard-trained charge was recording her first career win.
In a race in which Jade du Croate (Munjiz) set the pace,
the future winner bided her time in mid-division for a
considerable part of the race. Still with work to do at
the beginning of the straight, Nadia du Loup, under
the energetic promptings of jockey Olivier Peslier, gra-
dually made up the leeway before hitting the front with
150m to go. It was by half a length that she prevailed
by half a length at the expense of stablemate Jara'ah
Athbah (Mahabb). The courageous pacesetter, Jade du
Croate, was a length further away in third. Having an-
nexed this race last year with Image du Croate (Munjiz),
Élisabeth Bernard said in the aftermath: "She’s a classy
and magnificent filly. I’m delighted. Today she dropped
back in trip, and her quality made the difference. When
they are classy, all distances come alike!"
A SISTER OF FAUCON DE LOUP
Bred by the late Jean-Marc Saphores, Nadia du Loup is a
daughter of the Haras de Thouars sire Af Albahar (Amer),
and she’s is the ninth foal of Sirène du Loup (Al Sakbe).

Unbeaten in Italy, Zamer (Nizam) is the source of Ita-
lian pride, having already been the subject of extensive
press coverage. He made his French debut when tenth
in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr1 PA), with
the disclaimer that he had never tackled such
a long trip before: 2,000m. Fast-forwarding to October
24th, and the Prix Chéri Bibi (Gr3 BA), which entailed re-
verting to 1,600m (1m), the colt set the record straight.
After being held-up in mid-division, and, maintaining his
momentum to the wire after quickening up, he took the
measure of Nahim (Dahess) by a length. The latter was
quickly away, having initially raced in second position.
The hot favourite, Madrassa (No Risk al Maury), coming
off a second in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains,
was three lengths further away in third.
HEADING FOR THE QATAR PA DERBY AT DOHA
Zamer was bought by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed
Bin Khalifa Al Thani in the wake of his fifth successive
Italian victory. He was then sent to the stables of Thomas
Fourcy, and was supplemented for the Gr1 PA feature
at Saint-Cloud on what was his French debut. Only ten-
th on that occasion, some excuses were advanced for
that run, and his trainer told Equidia: "Zamer has a good
Italian CV. His task at Saint-Cloud was a difficult one, gi-
ven not only the journey factor, but also the 2,000m dis-
tance, which was perhaps a little too far for him. Today,
Invaincu en Italie, Zamer (Nizam) fait la fierté des

Zamer a été acheté par Son Altesse le cheikh Moham-
med bin Khalifa Al Thani suite à sa cinquième victoire
de rang, en Italie. Il a rejoint dans la foulée les boxes
de Thomas Fourcy et a été supplémenté dans le Gr1 PA
de Saint-Cloud pour ses débuts en France. Dixième, il
avait des excuses à faire valoir, comme l’a déclaré son
entraîneur au micro d’Equidia : « En Italie, Zamer avait
réalisé de belles choses. La tâche était difficile à Saint-
Cloud, avec non seulement le voyage, mais également
une distance de 2.000m peut-être un peu longue pour
lui. Aujourd'hui, le poulain démontre qu'il peut suivre

Zamer is a son of the Haras du Grand Courgeon sire Ni-
zam (Amer), who also had a spell in Italy at the stud of
Mattia Cadrobbi. Zamer was bred by the Rome native

Italian Anglo-Arabian (AA) circuit in Italy, his horses have
won several major French races in this sphere.
The dam, Iviolada de Zamaglia (Veinard Al Maury), hails
from Sardinia. Unraced, she was exported to the Italian
mainland for endurance purposes. However, her sire,
Veinard Al Maury (Kesberoy), was very much a racing
type, and he stood at stud in Sardinia which operates
under a system of regional studs. He went on to sire the
winners of races. The grandam, Baiana di Zamaglia (Ru-
bis de Carrère), is also the daughter of a French stallion
based at one of the above Sardinian studs. The great
grandam, Arborea III, was by the best PA stallion to
stand in Sardinia, the French-born Matouka (Gosse du
Béarn). Arborea III's descendants include smart Italian
performers, in the image of the sextuple winning Ussaro
de Zamaglia (Rubis de Carrère); Ajo de Zamaglia (Rubis
de Carrère): the winner of 17 races; plus the triple win-
ning Queretario (Azzam); and, more recently, of Amour
(Filindeu), Listed PA placed in Sardinia, and the winner of
14 races…a list that is far from exhaustive. This particular
bloodline was imported from France during the inter-war
period via the PA mare Gutta (Djebel Mousa).

UN ITALIEN AVEC BEAUCOUP DE SANG FRANÇAIS
Zamer est un fils de l’étalon du haras du Grand Cour-
geon Nizam (Amer), lequel a aussi été stationné en
Italie, chez Mattia Cadrobbi. Zamer a été élevé par le
Romain Massimiliano Narduzzi, très connu sur le circuit
des anglo-arabes en Italie, et qui a par ailleurs gagné
plusieurs grandes courses françaises pour cette race.
La mère, Iviolada de Zamaglia (Veinard Al Maury), vient
de Sardaigne. Elle n’a pas couru et a été exportée sur

Al Maury (Kesberoy), était un cheval de course et, au

cendance d’Arborea III, on retrouve de bons chevaux
de course en Italie, comme Ussaro de Zamaglia (Rubis
de Carrère), gagnant de six courses, Ajo de Zamaglia

LADY PRINCESS, L’EXTRATERRESTRE
Watching Lady Princess (General) race is a nerve-
jangling experience. Up against nine previous Gr1 PA
winners in the Qatar Arabian World Cup, the hot favourite
settled in last place, true to her habit, and her action was
scratchy to say the least. Meanwhile, at the front end of
the race, the two pacemakers went about their task on a
track which rated very soft. It appeared, at this juncture,
that the Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari mare was up against
it. Worse still, halfway up the straight, the mare started
to veer slightly off a true course, and, at this point, Hat-
tal (Mahabb) looked to be heading on his way to glory.
However, Lady Princess is on a different planet. As with
400m to go, Jim Crowley had yet asked the mare for her
effort, whereas all her rivals were at full stretch. Going to
the last 300m, and under a hand ride, the jockey simply
had to keep his mount up to her work. As her class spoke
loud and clear. Exhibiting sublime powers of acceleration,
Lady Princess lorded it over her rivals. The visual impres-
sion was certainly a stunning one. Furthermore, a filly/mare
had never won this race with such ease. When taking into
account both sexes, Al Mourtajez (Dahess) is probably the
only other winner of this race who can stand comparison
with the mare. Jim Crowley was still on horseback when
he commented: "With the exception of Baaeed (Sea the
Stars), I can’t recall having won a Gr1 race so easily! I'm
lucky to be riding her. Lady Princess is a special talent.
Travelling into the straight it felt really, really good. The
feeling was a very good one. She’s a superstar."
At the age of 9, Ebraz (Amer) was a highly creditable se-
cond, having gone down by over a length. This proved to
be the grand finale to his career, having won this race in

a galopé en dernière position, comme à son habitu-

Devant, les deux lièvres ont fait leur travail en terrain
très souple. On pensait alors que la tâche de la ju-
ment de Khalifa bin Sheail Al Kuwari serait difficile.
Pire encore, à mi-ligne droite, elle a un peu flotté, et
à cet instant, Hattal (Mahabb) a semblé en route vers
la gloire. Oui mais voilà, Lady Princess était sur une
autre planète. À 400m du but, Jim Crowley n'avait
encore rien demandé à sa partenaire, alors que tous
ses rivaux étaient en plein effort. À 300m du poteau,
le jockey a simplement accompagné aux bras la ju-
ment. Et la classe a parlé. Grâce à une accélération
sublime, Lady Princess a déposé les autres. Visuelle-
ment, c'était superbe. On n'a certainement jamais vu
une femelle gagner cette course avec autant de fa-
cilité. Tout sexe confondu, Al Mourtajez (Dahess) est
probablement le seul capable de soutenir la compa-
raison. Et ce d’autant plus qu’elle a déjà gagné plus
de Grs1 que le poulain. Encore à cheval, Jim Crowley
a déclaré : « Il n'y peut-être qu'avec Baaeed (Sea the
Stars) que j'ai gagné un Gr1 aussi facilement ! J'ai de
la chance de la monter. Lady Princess est à part. En
arrivant dans la ligne droite, j'étais vraiment très, très
bien. Les sensations ont été très bonnes. C'est une
superstar. »

proved to be Djafar (Dahess), who was a further three len-
gths adrift in third.
THOMAS FOURCY EQUALS THE RECORD OF JU-
LIAN SMART
This marked Thomas Fourcy's fifth success in this race,
and he now equals the previous mark of Julian Smart.
A very emotional trainer said: "She’s incredible. At the
halfway stage of the race, I felt like I was reliving Satur-
day's race win with Sahab (AF Albahar). As going to the
final 400m, her jockey was keeping the mare on a tight
rein. To show such a turn foot in this ground is unbe-
lievable. She has the engine and the class. With age,
she has also proved to be a more straight forward ride.
I’ve been lucky enough to come across two exceptio-
nal horses, Al Mourtajez and her. Today, she has moved
up a notch, and the mare isn’t far away from bypassing
Al Mourtajez in certain rankings. With these types of
horses, there is no margin for error: as this is the stage
in which you need to be at the top of your game. Ho-
ggar de l'Ardus was slightly disappointing. I equipped
him with cheek-pieces. Maybe it was a mistake on my
part. He beat Lady Princess in this race last year. She set
the record straight this year. She's simply the best." The
Qatari Khalifa Bin Sheail Al Kuwari was breaking the ice
in this prestigious prize, having won every other major
PA race globally.

C'est le cinquième succès de Thomas Fourcy qui
égale donc le record jusqu'alors détenu par Julian
Smart. Très ému, l'entraîneur a déclaré : « Elle est
incroyable. À mi-ligne droite, j'avais l'impression de
revivre la course de samedi avec Sahab (AF Albahar).
Son jockey tire dessus jusqu'à 400m de l'arrivée. Mon-
trer une telle vitesse dans ce terrain, c'est hors norme.
Elle a le moteur et la classe. Et avec l'âge, elle a aus-
si acquis la maniabilité. J'ai eu la chance de tomber
sur deux chevaux d'exception, Al Mourtajez et elle.
Aujourd'hui, elle franchit encore un cap et n'est pas
loin de passer devant Al Mourtajez dans certains clas-
sements. Avec ces chevaux, on n'a pas le droit à l'er-
reur : c'est la course où il faut être performant. Hoggar
de l'Ardus court un peu moins bien. J'ai essayé les
peaux de mouton. C'est peut-être une erreur de ma
part. L'année dernière, il battait Lady Princess. Cette
année, elle remet les pendules à l'heure. C'est vrai-
ment elle la meilleure. » Le Qatari Khalifa bin Sheail
Al Kuwari obtient un premier succès dans la grande

TWO ROHAUT RUNNERS ACHIEVE PODIUM FINISHES
François Rohaut delivered a training masterclass by
saddling Ebraz and Djafar to finish second and third. The
trainer said: "It's a pleasure to train a horse like Ebraz.
He was spot on today. However, Lady Princess is on
another planet: she’s incredible! She should have a sta-
tue erected in her honour in the pantheon of the great
PA horses. When Ebraz came with his run, I thought
that a match between the pair was about to unfold.
Not a bit of it. Lady Princess was superior. If she hadn't
been in the race, he would have won by four lengths,
and we would have been singing his praises by proclai-
ming: what a champion! This race is his swansong: as
he's now retiring to stud. It's great to be able to sign off
on such a note…". On the subject of his other runner,
the trainer added: "Djafar showed us that he is capable
of getting the trip. He’s not a heavy ground horse but
is very brave. He’s a real racehorse, a warrior. He’s also
a very likeable horse. After Goodwood, I decided to
try our luck in this race. This performance opens doors
for us. He ran a blinder because he wasn’t well drawn
either. We will be able to go on our travels with him,
and why shouldn’t he claim some good scalps along
the way? We will look at the Abu Dhabi programme
book and calmly give it some thought. Djafar goes well
when fresh, and is a straight forward horse to train."
Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte said of the fourth Hattal:
"Hattal had a good race, but having made his move

Cette course est sa dernière : il rentre au haras prochai-
nement. C'est beau de l'arrêter sur une performance
comme ça… » Au sujet de son autre pensionnaire, il
poursuit : « Djafar nous montre qu'il est capable de
tenir la distance. Ce cheval ne va pas vraiment dans
le lourd mais il est très courageux. C'est un vrai che-
val de course, un guerrier. Il est aussi très attachant.
Après Goodwood, j'ai décidé de tenter notre chance
dans cette course. Cette performance nous ouvre des
portes. C'est formidable ce qu'il fait, car, en plus, il
n'avait pas un bon numéro de corde. Nous allons pou-
voir voyager avec lui et, pourquoi pas, battre certains
bons. Nous allons regarder du côté d'Abu Dhabi et ré-
fléchir tranquillement. Djafar court bien frais et est fa-
cile à préparer. » Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte nous a dit

early enough, he wasn't as incisive as usual. We’re a bit
disappointed and maybe it was an off day. His owners
will decide the next step."
THE SISTER OF MISTER GINOUX
Lady Princess is the pride and joy of her breeders, the
Charente-based couple Élodie and Bruno Bellaud. The
filly was bought as a foal by Paul Basquin on behalf of
Lisa and Pierre Deymonaz. She was then dispatched to
the Haras du Saubouas. The latter concern enjoyed a
great weekend, as Ebraz was broken in and spent his
pre-training period at the establishment of Paul Basquin,
who also numbers Djafar among his purchases. Gérard
Larrieu subsequently acquired the mare for her current
owner in the aftermath of her victorious debut.
Lady Princess is a daughter of the Haras du Grand Cour-
geon sire General (Amer). Her dam, Nacrée Al Maury
(Kesberoy), won the Prix Damas (Gr3 PA). Her first foal,
Mister Ginoux (Amer), has proved a successful sire at
the Haras de Thouars where he stands on behalf of Al
Shaqab Racing. The winner of five races, he captured the
Qatar International Trophy (Gr1 PA), the Derby des Pur-
Sang arabes de 4ans (Gr2 PA) (beating Gazwan (Amer)
no less), plus the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge at
Toulouse (Gr3 PA). Nacrée Al Maury has also produced
the Qatar Prix de l’Élevage (Gr2 PA) third Carsa de Gi-
noux (Dormane).
Nectarine Al Maury (Baroud III), the grandam, has gene-
rated No Risk Al Maury (Kesberoy), the winner of ten PA
Group races, and who has proved himself as a successful
Shadwell sire. Nectarine Al Maury is also the grandam
of No Problem Al Maury (Dormane). The latter won the
President of the UAE Cup Malazgirt Trophy (Gr1 PA).

SAHAB: THE SMALL FILLY… WITH A BIG ENGINE
SAHAB, PETITE POULICHE… GROS MOTEUR
The career pathway of Sahab (Af Albahar) has been
anything but a conventional one. A winner at Bordeaux
in one of the very first races open to the PA 3 year-old
division – by seven lengths – over 1,400m (7f) in April,
she has never shirked the issue since.
The Mohamed Fahad Al Attiya-owned PA filly had tasted
defeat in her three prior PA Group attempts, although
she achieved a podium finish on each occasion. In the
Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA), she was
only a head shy of the winner! Sahab was then sent to
Qatar where a busy winter awaited her, and she raced
four times there, which included a second, when pitted
against the boys, in the Qatar Derby (Gr3 PA, 1,600m).
Her connections subsequently gave her a four month
break. On her French return, she was beaten two len-
gths by Al Wakrah (TM Fred Texas) in the Prix Nevadour
(Gr3 PA). However, at ParisLongchamp, the weight of
the punters’ cash ensured that she started favourite. She
justified market confidence by delivering a career best
performance in the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments
– Pouliches de 4ans Gr1 PA). Exuding class, she posted
the fastest sectionals at business end (after recording a
split of 13.02s between the 400m to the 200m markers).
CLEARLY A CUT ABOVE THE REST
Having worked herself into a sweat at the start, Sahab
subsequently relaxed during the race as the front-running

naire. Gagnante de l’une des premières courses de
l’année à 3ans – par sept longueurs – au mois d’avril, à
Bordeaux et sur 1.400m, elle n’a ensuite jamais baissé
de pied.
La pouliche de Mohamed Fahad Al Attiyah a en effet
été battue à trois reprises au niveau Groupe, montant à
chaque fois sur le podium. Dans le Qatar Arabian Tro-
phy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA), une tête seulement la sé-
parait de la gagnante ! Sahab est ensuite partie au Qa-
tar où elle n’a pas chômé pendant l’hiver avec quatre
sorties, dont une deuxième place face aux mâles dans
le Qatar Derby (Gr3 PA, 1.600m). Son entourage l’a en-
suite laissée tranquille pendant quatre mois. Et pour sa
rentrée, en France, elle a été battue de deux longueurs
par Al Wakrah (TM Fred Texas) dans le Prix Nevadour
(Gr3 PA). Mais le 1er octobre à ParisLongchamp, les
parieurs en avaient fait leur favorite. Et elle a justifié
leur confiance en signant la meilleure performance de
sa carrière dans le Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments–
Pouliches de 4ans (Gr1 PA). Elle gagné avec classe et
signe d’ailleurs les meilleurs temps partiels de la phase
finale (13’’02 de la marque des 400m à celle des 200m).
TRÈS AU-DESSUS DU LOT
Bouillante au départ, Sahab s’est ensuite posée dans
une course animée par Sultana (Af Al Buraq) qui a im-

go, Mickael Barzalona was forced to let his mount stride
on. Given her class, the outcome was never really in
doubt, and the visual impression was a good one as she
never had to force her talent. The classy Monda (No Risk
Al Maury) finished with a flourish to get within a length of
the winner. Sultana was third. Still on horseback. Mickael
Barzalona said: "Sahab took matters into her own hands
when Cristian Demuro drew upsides. However, she re-
mains a fairly straight forward ride. She exuded class and
won easily. Thomas Fourcy’s confidence in the filly was
infectious, as his charge is a very tough customer. He
told me that the filly could race from the front on the
proviso that she sets a steady gallop, stressing her ability
to turn back any would be attackers."
NOT MUCH OF A LOOKER… YET
A clearly elated Thomas Fourcy said: "She’s very ge-
nerous. When giving the orders, I told Mickael that he
could be confident, even though she doesn't appear to
have a big engine when you look at her visually. She’s not
much of a looker from a physical perspective. Happily,
there was pace in the race. I was a bit apprehensive in
the false straight: as she came on to the bit and I feared
that it was too early. However, she’s as hard as nails. It's
an impressive display. Going to the final 400m, she was
pulling double. She combines class and speed. The fact
of being able to find her feet, and pick up when she
wanted, seemed to spur her on. She would have dug
very deep had another horse put her under pressure.
We have a good partnership with Alban de Mieulle, as

ma hauteur. Mais elle reste gérable. La pouliche a fait
preuve de classe et s’impose facilement. Thomas Four-
cy m’avait fait part de sa confiance car sa pensionnaire
est très dure. Il m’a dit qu’elle pouvait aller devant à
condition de doser, car elle est capable de repousser
les attaques. » 
ELLE NE PAYE PAS DE MINE… ET POURTANT
Visiblement très heureux, Thomas Fourcy a décla-
ré : « Elle est très généreuse. Aux ordres, j'ai dit à
Michael qu'il pouvait être confiant, même si elle ne
semble pas avoir trop de moteur vu de l'extérieur.
Elle n'est pas impressionnante lorsqu'on la voit. Heu-
reusement, il y a eu du rythme. J'ai juste eu un peu
peur dans la fausse ligne droite : elle est venue sur
le mors et j'avais peur que cela soit trop tôt. Mais
elle est tellement dure, c'est impressionnant. À 400m
du but, il a tiré dessus. Elle a de la classe et de la
vitesse. Le fait de venir sur la main lui a donné de la
motivation. Et elle aurait mis son cœur sur la piste
si un autre cheval était venu l'attaquer. Avec Alban
de Mieulle, nous faisons un bon duo, il a continué à

the filly has continued to progress under his guidance
in Qatar."
CONNECTIONS ARE HAPPY WITH MONDA
Xavier Thomas-Demeaulte, the trainer of the second
Monda, said: "Monda ran very well. She has improved
for her return effort at La Teste, and has a certain affinity
for soft tracks. Her jockey told me that she would have
preferred a stronger gallop. Her performance is a very
good one. James Crowley is a very good jockey. It was
a pleasure to have him riding for us today. Her owners
will decide where she goes next, but I think it will be
very much a case of going abroad with her. Monda was
campaigned in Qatar last year."
A FIRST EXPERIENCE ON THIS GROUND FOR SULTANA
Élisabeth Bernard said of the third and fifth placed fini-
shers: "I'm delighted. Sultana came to me via the United
Arab Emirates and, until now, she has only tackled races
with plenty of pace from the start. It’s a bit like what hap-
pens in the US. She has been conditioned accordingly,
and that's understandable. Today she was encountering
soft ground for the first time. I’m sure that she will conti-
nue to progress, especially from a temperament pers-
pective. She will learn how to relax. The 2,000m distance
was no problem, but 1,600m would have suited her even
better. Fleur du Soleil gave a good account of herself,
and I’m very happy to be able to link up again with PA
horses which are owned by Sheikh Mansour."
A GRAND-DAUGHTER OF THE EXCELLENT BAL-
LADE FOLLE
Sahab was bred at the Haras de Saubouas stud, where
she was born, on behalf of Mohamed Fahad Al Attiyah.
She’s a daughter of Af Albahar (Amer), a stallion based
at the Haras de Thouars, and Sahab is her third French
PA Gr1 winner. Sahab was also "conceived" at Thouars...
The dam, Manella (Dormane), was unraced. Her 2-year-
old offering was sold for €120,000 at the Arqana PA
sale. The grandam, Ballade Folle (Djelfor), was born at
the Haras de Pompadour. Trained by François Rohaut,
she won at Feurs as a 4-year-old, before finishing sixth
in the Derby des Pur-sang Arabes at Chantilly. The latter
proved her swansong appearance on the racecourse.
However at stud, she has proved to be something of a
PA blue hen mare. At a first generation level, she pro-
duced three black performers, and notably Dormah
de Brugère (Dormane), whose seven career wins com-
prised the Jumeirah International Stakes and the Ara-
bian International Stakes (Grs2 PA). Ballade Folle is also
the grandam of seven black type performers. Mahess
du Soleil (Dahess), the winner of the UK Arabian Derby
(Gr1 PA), is a case in point; as is the successful stallion

SATISFACTION DU CÔTÉ DE MONDA

pour les pistes souples. Son jockey m'a dit qu'elle au-
rait préféré une course avec plus de rythme. Sa perfor-
mance est très bonne. James Crowley est un très bon
jockey. C'était un plaisir de l'avoir aujourd'hui. Ses pro-
priétaires vont décider de la suite mais je pense que
ce sera très international pour elle. Monda est allée au
Qatar l'année dernière. »
UNE PREMIÈRE DANS CE TERRAIN POUR SULTANA
Élisabeth Bernard a déclaré au sujet de la troisième
et de la cinquième : « Je suis ravie, Sultana arrive des
Émirats arabes unis et a couru jusqu'alors uniquement
dans des courses qui vont vite dès le départ. Un peu
comme aux États-Unis. Elle a été dressée comme ça,
et c'est bien compréhensible. Aujourd'hui, elle décou-
vrait le terrain souple. Je suis sûre qu'elle va continuer
à progresser, notamment dans le comportement. Elle
va apprendre à se détendre. Les 2.000m ne lui posent
pas de problème, mais une distance de 1.600m serait
encore mieux pour elle. Fleur du Soleil court bien et je
suis très heureuse de retrouver la casaque de Son Al-
tesse le cheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan. »
UNE PETITE-FILLE DE L’EXCELLENTE BALLADE
FOLLE
Sahab a été élevée au haras du Saubouas, où elle est
née, pour le compte de Mohamed Fahad Al Attiyah.
C’est une fille d’Af Albahar (Amer), stationné au haras
de Thouars et qui donne ainsi son troisième gagnant

When a PA 3-year-old crushes the opposition in a
Gr1 PA race, one always wonders if he will be able to
repeat the feat. On his previous start at Deauville, Al
Ghadeer (Al Mourtajez) had sprouted wings in the Al
Rayyan Cup–Prix Kesberoy (Gr1 PA). Fast-forwarding to
September 30 , at Saint-Cloud, he more than confirmed
th
previous impressions by winning the Qatar Arabian Tro-
phy des Poulains (Gr1 PA) by two lengths. He’s the best
PA 3-year-old in France, and in the world! The stallion
Al Mourtajez (Dahess) has been represented by his first
crop of PA 3-year-olds this year, and two of them achie-
ved podium finishes here.
Christophe Soumillon gave Al Ghadeer a confident
race, and the combination initially languished off the
pace in the second half of the field. The majority of the
field tracked over to the stands’ side rail in the straight,
whereas the jockey of the winner deftly pursued a more
central course. In fact, the race was already in the bag at
the 400m marker. Al Ghadeer simply oozed class as he
hardly had to force his talent to win by two lengths un-
der a hand ride. Madrassa (No Risk Al Maury), a Gr2 PA
winner last time out, was second. Joe Star (Al Mourta-
jez), the conqueror of Al Ghadeer when they made their
racecourse debut (directly at PA Group level) was three
and a half lengths further away in third.

HAVING ALL THE HALLMARKS OF BEING A CRACK
PERFORMER
Damien de Watrigant, Al Ghadeer's previous trainer, had
trumpeted that his former charge was “an exceptional
talent” a while ago. So much so that the trainer chose a
PA Group race for his charge’s racecourse introduction.
The colt has since confirmed prior impressions for his
new connections, having since been sold (via Paul Bas-
quin) to Al Wasmiyah
Racing, and the
young group of Qa-
taris which now own
the colt were a nu-
merous presence (in
tandem with their fa-
mily members), when
it came to suppor-
ting their champion
here. Al Ghadeer
gave trainer François
Rohaut his fourth win
in the Qatar Arabian
Trophy des Poulains
(Gr1 PA). He said:
"He’s simply the
best of the generation. It brooks no discussion. As he’s
a notch above the rest. This still applies despite the fact
that he had to exert himself a bit more, on this ground,
compared to Deauville. He has only raced three times
and needs to toughen up. He has only seen the race-
course on three occasions. He’s a healthy and good-na-
tured colt. He has all the attributes which we associate
with a crack performer. He was tackling a big field for the
first time. Christophe Soumillon gave him a very good
ride, having also ensured that the colt learned from the
experience which is invariably a plus. He may head to
Doha during the winter, but the owners will decide."
MADRASSA IS A SOLID SECOND
Didier Guillemin, the trainer of the second-Madrassa,
said: "Last time out at La Teste-de-Buch, the colt was pe-
rhaps a little too fresh. However, today he was as good
as gold. His jockey, Jean-Bernard Eyquem, also gave
him a good ride. His second place comes as no surprise
to me because his form stacks up! Furthermore, we got
beaten by a very good colt. We will discuss his next as-
signment with his owners, because I have no firm plans
for him at the moment..."
JOE STAR WILL BE EVEN BETTER AT FOUR
Thomas Fourcy said of the third, Joe Star (purchased
privately by Paul Basquin): "He is a very late maturing
horse. He has lacked maturity when finding himself sur-

Didier Guillemin, l’entraîneur du deuxième, Ma-
drassa, a déclaré : « En dernier lieu, à La Teste-de-
Buch, le poulain était peut-être un peu trop frais.
Aujourd’hui, son comportement a été irréprochable.
Son jockey, Jean-Bernard Eyquem, l’a également
bien monté. Je ne suis pas surpris de cette deu-
xième place car il avait des lignes intéressantes !
De plus, nous sommes vraiment battus par un très
bon poulain. Nous allons discuter de la suite avec
ses propriétaires car je n’ai encore rien décidé pour
le moment... »
JOE STAR SERA ENCORE MIEUX À 4ANS
Thomas Fourcy nous a dit au sujet du troisième, Joe
Star (un achat à l’amiable Paul Basquin : « C'est un
cheval très tardif. Il a manqué de maturité lorsqu'il
s'est retrouvé au milieu des chevaux. Mais comme
son frère, il va bien évoluer à 4ans. Sa croissance

rounded by other horses. However, in common with his
brother, he will improve considerably as a 4-year-old. He
still has some growing to do. I liked the way in which the
colt ran on, in the wake of suffering minor interference,
having finished with a flourish. I am very happy to see
two sons of Al Mourtajez on the podium. It’s extraordi-
nary. In the fillies’ equivalent of this race, a daughter of
Azadi proved tops, and he’s another stallion which hails
from the breeding operation of Hassan Mousli, who has
been my guiding light."
OUT OF A MARE WHO WON AS A 2-YEAR-OLD!
Bred in France by the Iraqi national Mohammad Al
Najafi, Al Ghadeer is a son of Al Mourtajez (Dahess),
who enjoys the reputation of being the Frankel (Ga-
lileo) of the PA world. His first crop, which are 3-year-
olds, has yielded six winners, five of which have gained
black type (from a total of 15 runners). Al Ghadeer is
his first Gr1 PA winner. He was conceived at the Haras
de Thouars.
The dam, Gharraa (Matador 12) was a very classy mare,
having won the Critérium des Pouliches (Gr2 PA), and
distinguished herself at the highest level in Turkey. She
began her career in Iraq and was a multiple winner
there as a 2-year-old over trips ranging from 1,400m
(7f) to 1,600m (1m)…
Gharraa has already produced Durat Al Zaman (Hilal
Al Zaman), the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Juments (for
4-year-old fillies, Gr1 PA) fourth. Above all, she is no-
tably the dam of Ghurat Al Zaman (Hilal Al Zaman).
The latter won the Prix Damas (Gr3 PA) and the Qatar

n'est pas terminée. J'ai bien aimé sa fin de course,
après avoir été un peu gêné, car il a terminé en re-
faisant du terrain. Je suis très heureux de voir deux
Al Mourtajez sur le podium. C'est extraordinaire. Et
dans les femelles, c'est une fille d'Azadi qui gagne,
encore un étalon issu de l'élevage d'Hassan Mousli,
mon père spirituel. »
SA MÈRE A GAGNÉ À 2ANS !
Élevé en France par l'Irakien Mohammad Al Najafi,
Al Ghadeer est un fils d'Al Mourtajez (Dahess), le Fran-
kel (Galileo) des pur-sang arabes. En France, à ce jour,
il compte déjà six gagnants et cinq black types avec
ses premiers 3ans (sur 15 partants). Al Ghadeer est
son premier lauréat de Gr1 PA. Il a été conçu au haras
de Thouars.
Sa mère, Gharraa (Matador 12), était une toute bonne
jument, qui a notamment gagné le Critérium des Pou-

Last time out, at La Teste, Nour Al Maury (Azadi) had
an unhappy time of it in the straight when third to No Tear
Al Maury (Jaafer ASF) in the French Arabian Breeders'
Challenge–Pouliches (Gr2 PA). This time around at Saint-
Cloud (September 30 ) she started second favourite on

the Pari Mutuel. Now racing in the colours of Al Shaqab
Racing, having made her debut at Langon in the silks of
her breeder, Renée-Laure Koch, the filly shook up the
pecking order of the 3-year-old PA fillies’ division by an-
nexing the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA).
The Faleh Nasser Bughenaim- Nour Al Maury combina-
tion made a slow start to a race in which Jara'ah Athbah
(Mahabb) set the tempo. The future winner gave gene-
rously of herself following a wide trip, and was among a
group of fillies which tracked over to stands’ side rail in the
straight. It was anybody’s race going to the final 400m to
go. However, the Saint-Cloud straight is a long one... and
Nour Al Maury, responding to the energetic promptings
of her jockey, pulled out the required extra to win a touch
cosily. A winner at Gr3 PA level, Mezown (Al Mamum
Monlau) was three-quarters of a length adrift in second,
having appealed as a potential winner in mid-stretch. The
first and second carry the colours of Al Shaqab Racing,
who were recording their fourth win in this Gr1 PA race.
The Gr2 PA winning favourite No Tear Al Maury was just
over a length further away in third.
A POSITIVE PREP RACE SETS THE TONE
Thomas Fourcy was winning the Qatar Arabian Trophy
des Pouliches (Gr1 PA) for the fifth time. He said: "The

En dernier lieu à La Teste, Nour Al Maury (Azadi)
n’avait pas été très heureuse dans la ligne droite, termi-
nant troisième de No Tear Al Maury (Jaafer ASF) dans le
French Arabian Breeders' Challenge–Pouliches (Gr2 PA).
Le 30 septembre à Saint-Cloud, elle faisait partie des
deux favorites au pari mutuel. Et celle qui court désor-
mais sous les couleurs d’Al Shaqab Racing, après avoir
débuté pour son éleveur, Renée-Laure Koch, à Langon, a
renversé la hiérarchie chez les femelles de 3ans pour rem-
porter le Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr1 PA).
Faleh Nasser Bughenaim a laissé Nour Al Maury partir
tranquillement dans une épreuve animée par Jara'ah
Athbah (Mahabb). La future lauréate a galopé à son aise
en épaisseur et a fait partie du lot de pouliches qui sont
venues du côté du rail des tribunes. À 400m du but,
quasiment toutes les concurrentes étaient encore en lice
pour la victoire. Mais la ligne droite de Saint-Cloud est
longue… et Nour Al Maury, énergiquement sollicitée par
son jockey, a créé la différence pour s’imposer avec assu-
rance. Gagnante de Gr3, Mezown (Al Mamum Monlau)
est deuxième à trois quarts de longueur après avoir fait
illusion à mi ligne droite. Les deux premières portent la
casaque d’Al Shaqab Racing qui décroche ainsi sa qua-
trième victoire dans ce Gr1. No Tear Al Maury, lauréate
de Gr2, est troisième à un peu plus d’une longueur. Elle
était la favorite des parieurs.
APRÈS UNE BONNE PRÉPARATOIRE

jockey wasn’t overly hard on the filly on her previous ou-
ting, so as to ensure that she was cherry ripe for this race.
We endeavoured to get her in a calm frame of mind, and
the pace of the race helped her. The various comings and
goings during the race didn’t put the filly’s nose out of
joint. A good filly, she made headway, in the right part of
the course, up the straight. It must also be said that Jé-
rôme Cabre has done a good job with her." Faleh Nasser
Bughenaim has already won local Gr1 PA races in his na-
tive homeland, Qatar. However, the Qatar Arabian Trophy
des Pouliches was his first win at this level in France.
MEZOWN RAISES HER GAME… AHEAD OF QATAR
Élisabeth Bernard said of the second placed Mezown:
"That’s much better compared to last time. The filly is
difficult in the morning, and I didn't get enough work
into her prior to her last outing [editor’s note: fifth in the
French Arabian Breeders' Challenge – Pouliches]. So I
shook things up a little and it worked. You need to get
plenty of work into difficult fillies. I was delighted with
the way that she was working before this race. She will
now head to Qatar where she will join trainer Éric Le-
martinel. I don't really have an explanation for Jara'ah
Athbah (8 ), and maybe it's down to the distance? She

began her career by making a close run thing of it with
the winner of this race. Although a tricky filly, I think
highly of her. Nadia du Loup (6th) is a filly who will even-
tually make her mark, but she’s still on the tender side…"
TWO ‘AL MAURY’ FILLIES ARE IN THE FIRST THREE
Two home-breds of the renowned French breeder Re-
née-Laure Koch made the podium in this Gr1 PA race.
She said: "When it comes to breeding, as life in general,

déclaré : « Elle a eu une course gentille précédem-
ment pour préparer cette échéance. L’objectif était
de l’avoir calme et le rythme l’a aidée. Les mouve-
ments dans la course ne l’ont pas perturbée. C’est
une bonne pouliche et elle a progressé au bon en-
droit dans la ligne droite. Il faut aussi dire que Jé-
rôme Cabre a fait du bon travail avec elle. » Faleh
Nasser Bughenaim a déjà remporté des Grs1 locaux
au Qatar, son pays d’origine. Mais ce Qatar Arabian
Trophy des Pouliches est une première en France à
ce niveau…
MEZOWN EN PROGRÈS… AVANT LE QATAR
Élisabeth Bernard a déclaré au sujet de la deuxième,
Mezown : « C’est beaucoup mieux que la dernière
fois. La pouliche est difficile le matin et je ne l’avais
pas assez travaillée en amont lors de sa sortie pré-
cédente [5e du French Arabian Breeders' Challenge
– Pouliches, ndlr]. J’ai rectifié le tir et cela a fonction-
né. Les pouliches difficiles ont besoin de travail. Je
suis ravie de son travail avant la course. Désormais,
elle va courir au Qatar sous l’entraînement d’Éric Le-
martinel. Je n’ai pas trop d’explications pour Jara'ah
Athbah (8e), peut-être est-ce la distance ? Elle a dé-
buté en terminant près de la gagnante du jour. C’est
une pouliche délicate, mais je l’estime beaucoup.
Nadia du Loup (6e), elle, va galoper, mais elle est en-
core tendre… »
DEUX AL MAURY DANS LES TROIS PREMIERS
Grand éleveur français, Renée-Laure Koch a réussi l’ex-
ploit de placer deux de ses élèves sur le podium de
ce Gr1 PA. Elle nous a confié  : « L’élevage, et la vie

you take the rough with the smooth! One year we ques-
tion everything on account on our horses not coming
up to scratch. The following year, and given the same
methodology, we are producing horses of above ave-
rage ability. It's funny, as, this year, they tell me that I’ve
managed to produce precocious types for the very first
time! It's an exciting job and very much a team effort. We
have an excellent team in place at the Haras du Maury
where these two fillies were bred. This success is also
theirs, and that of the vets, the farrier... every single de-
tail counts! The dam is a daughter of Jalnar Al Khalidiah
(Tiwaiq), a horse I had seen [in the flesh] when he was
trained by Jean-François Bernard. He was an extraordi-
nary physical specimen. He also hailed from an excep-
tional maternal line, given the presence of Djourman
(Manguier) in his pedigree, which I have a lot of affinity
for, and that explains my choice of stallion…"
A DAUGHTER AND GRAND-DAUGHTER OF NEMO-
SIE AL MAURY MAKE THE PODIUM
Nour Al Maury was bred by Renée-Laure Koch. She is
a daughter of the top French PA stallion Azadi (Darike),
and the sire of two winners of the Qatar Arabian Trophy
des Pouliches (Gr1 PA). Azadi is also the dam’s sire of a
winner.
The dam Nectarina Al Maury is one of the few daughters
of Jalnar Al Khalidiah (Tiwaiq) at stud in France. She is an
unraced mare. She was bred to Dahess (Amer) in 2022.
Nour Al Maury was conceived at the Haras de Thouars.
The grandam, the unraced Nemosie Al Maury (Kesbe-
roy), produced the Gr1 PA winning sire No Problem Al

en général, sont faits de hauts et de bas ! Une année,
on remet tout en question car on a des chevaux moins
performants. Et l’année suivante, avec la même base,
on a des sujets qui sortent de l’ordinaire. C’est amu-
sant car cette année, c’est la première fois qu’on me
dit que mon élevage sort des chevaux précoces ! C’est
un métier passionnant et un travail d’équipe. Il y a une
bonne équipe au haras du Maury où ces deux pou-
liches ont été élevées. Cette réussite, c’est aussi la leur
et celle des vétérinaires, du maréchal ferrant… Tous
les détails comptent  ! La mère est une fille de Jalnar
Al Khalidiah (Tiwaiq), un cheval que j’avais vu lorsqu’il
était à l’entraînement chez Jean-François Bernard. Au
modèle, il sortait de l’ordinaire. Son origine maternelle
sortait aussi de l’ordinaire, avec le sang de Djourman
(Manguier) que j’apprécie beaucoup. J’ai donc choisi
de l’utiliser… »
UNE FILLE ET UNE PETITE-FILLE DE NÉMOSIE AL
MAURY SUR LE PODIUM
Nour Al Maury a été élevée par Renée-Laure Koch. C’est

SAMLLA UN GALOP PUBLIC AVANT L’INTERNATIONAL
Samlla (Assy) was the horse to beat on paper. He more
than justified that billing by hacking up at Bordeaux on
September 18th! After an indifferent start, the horse
owned by Sheikha Reem bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al
Thani and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa
Al Thani came to win his race with a double handful. The
outcome was never ever in doubt… as Samlla scored a
four and a half lengths victory. Having won three times
already over 1,400m, Safwah (Burning Sand) was se-
cond. Ryst Tout (No Risk Al Maury), another to be slowly
away, was two and a half lengths further away in third.
VERY MUCH IN A DIFFERENT LEAGUE
Samlla's trainer, François Rohaut, told the Equidia
channel in the aftermath: "We could see that he was
in a different league to his rivals. So it's normal that he
turned on the style. On good terms with himself, he’s
invariably a very willing customer... and, in addition to
being a handsome specimen, he has a nice action to
boot. He's a proper racehorse! It's great that there was a
lot of pace in the race today. Things panned out perfec-
tly. I need to talk to the boss first before deciding where
he will go next. As a 4-year-old, we'll endeavour to go on
our travels with him by tackling some big races abroad,
and so Doha or Abu Dhabi could be on the agenda. All
the options are open to him, but I think that his season

Après un départ moyen, le représentant de la cheikha
Reem bint Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani et de Son
Altesse le cheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani est
venu avec beaucoup de ressources. Et la ligne droite
n’a été qu’une simple formalité. Sur 1.400m, Samlla
s’impose de quatre longueurs et demie. Triple gagnant
sur 1.400m, Safwah (Burning Sand) est deuxième. Rysk
Tout (No Risk Al Maury), elle aussi mal sortie des boîtes,
se classe troisième à deux longueurs et demie.
TRÈS AU-DESSUS DU LOT
L’entraîneur de Samlaa, François Rohaut, a expliqué
au micro d’Equidia après la course : « On voit qu’il
n’est pas du même niveau que ses adversaires du
jour. Il est normal qu’il fasse une démonstration. Il
est bien, il a toujours de l’envie… il est beau et a
belle action. Il s'agit d'un vrai cheval de course !
C’est bien, il y a eu beaucoup de rythme aujourd’hui.
Tout est parfait. Il faut que je parle avec le “boss”
pour décider quelle sera sa sortie suivante. À 4ans,
on va essayer de voyager un peu pour aller sur les
grandes courses à l’étranger, par exemple à Doha ou
à Abu Dhabi. Toutes les options sont ouvertes, mais
je pense que l’année est finie en France pour lui.  »

race looked well within his grasp beforehand. Monsieur
Rohaut told me to cut my cloth according to the horse,
in terms of riding tactics. A bit flat-footed at the start,
he proved a cool customer, before delivering his wicked
finishing kick."
Élisabeth Bernard, on the subject of the second, Safwah,
told Equidia: "His second place is a logical one given
that the winner was unbeatable. I’m over the moon with
his second place. My horse pulled a bit but he finished
well. He’s an epitome of consistency. He will improve
with age. He won’t race again in France this year, and
an assignment in the Sultanate of Oman awaits him, be-
fore he returns to the yard next year. It's a country which
speaks to the heart, having lived there for two years..."
ASSY’S BEST ADVERTISEMENT
Bred by Al Shahania Stud, Samlla is part of the first crop
of the home-based stallion Assy (Amer). To date, he
has had 17 runners in France, including four winners
and two PA Group scorers: Samlla and Moharram (Prix
Tidjani, Gr3 PA). Neither should we forget Maguroor
(third in the French Arabian Breeders' Challenge - Pou-
lains, Gr2 PA).
Samlla is the first foal of the unraced mare Djakera
des Forges (Kerbella). The grandam, Djarella (Djar-
ni des Forges) was an endurance racing performer.
None of her two French products have as yet graced
the racecourse. Djalou des Forges (Samsun), the great
grandam, has produced the Saudi Arabian winning Shi-
bil Al Khalidiah (Amer). Trawling back through the pe-

lot qui était largement à sa portée. Monsieur Rohaut
m’avait dit de le monter pour lui. Il a été un peu pris
de vitesse en partant, mais ensuite il a été cool avant
de bien sprinter… »
Élisabeth Bernard a déclaré sur Equidia au sujet
du deuxième, Safwah : « Cette deuxième place est
logique derrière un cheval imbattable dans cette
course. Je suis ravie de cette deuxième place. Il a un
peu tiré et finit bien. C’est un cheval extrêmement
régulier. En vieillissant, il va se bonifier. Il ne va pas
recourir en France cette année et va prendre part à
une compétition au Sultanat d’Oman avant de re-
venir dans notre écurie l’année prochaine. C’est un
pays de cœur où j’ai vécu durant deux années… »
LE FER DE LANCE D'ASSY
Élevé par Al Shahania Stud, Samlla fait partie de
la première génération de l'étalon maison Assy
(Amer). À ce jour, il a eu 17 partants en France, dont
quatre gagnants et deux lauréats de Groupe : Saml-
la et Moharram (Prix Tidjani, Gr3 PA). Sans oublier
Maguroor (troisième du French Arabian Breeders'
Challenge – Poulains, Gr2 PA).
Samlla est le premier produit de Djakera des Forges
