Blackall riders do well at Cloncurry Stockmans Challenge

Blackall residents Kirsty Hayman and Regina Fitsimons recently travelled to Cloncurry for the annual Ernest Henry Mining Cloncurry Stockmans Challenge. The Challenge is the biggest working horse event in Australia and is recognised as one of the greatest horse performance events in the country. This year there were record numbers of entries for the competition, with 84 horses entered. Spectators and both professional and non-professional competitors travelled from all over Australia for the three day event. Kirsty Hayman took her horse Aussie Idol by Seligman Spin and scored 90 in the dry work in round one and 81 in the wet work. These scores put Kirsty and Aussie Idol into the finals for the event, sitting in second place of the fifteen that went through. The finals involved a different pattern to work, in which Kirsty scored a 90.25 in the dry work but bumped up against a bad beast in the wet work, which let down her final result. Kirsty finished in 11th place overall and although disappointed at what could have been, she said that it was by far her best achievement to date. It was a big honour to be riding against the other riders in the competition. Kirsty also finished the event as the highest scoring aggregate in the dry work and the top ladies aggregate. Kirstys horse, 4-year old Aussie Idol won the ladies Yaraka draft at their second ever outing and finished second in the open challenge in Blackall earlier this year. Regina Fitsimons entered with Halls Idol Spin and Waymond Legacy and made the finals with both horses in the Stanbroke

More aged care support and facilities for Blackall

Rowan Hunnam
Members of Parliament joined community members, residents of the aged care facilities, committee members and Blackall-Tambo councillors to officially open the $2.2 million extension to McLean Place at the Barcoo Retirement Village in Blackall on Wednesday. The extension provides a new wing and 10 additional rooms at the facility which is part of the Barcoo Living Multipurpose Service. The development has also boosted local employment. Construction activities provided jobs for eight workers for 40 weeks and the multipurpose service now employs six additional permanent employees bringing the total number of staff to 34. At the opening, Barcoo Retirement Village Committee Chair Owen Stockwell recounted the history of community participation and involvement in the development of aged care facilities in Blackall, which began in 1981 with a group of concerned citizens meeting in the town hall to discuss the lack of options available for the aging population to remain in their home town. One resident, Dolly Stevenson has been cared for by the Blackall community for 25 years. Owen said that such care would not exist were it not for the generosity and support of the local community. Daphne Rich, one of the remaining committee members who have been involved since 1981, said that the opening was a dream come true. Many of those in attendance gave much of the credit and many thanks to Owen Stockwell. Owen has been a driving force for aged care here in Blackall, Major Terry Brennan said. Admissions opened for the new rooms in early June and nine of the ten rooms have already been filled. The Honourable Justine Elliot Minister for Ageing said: Australians now have the longest life expectancy in the Englishspeaking world. This is about preparing to meet the challenges of our ageing population, she said. We want to ensure that we have the aged care places ready when people need to leave their homes and enter aged care, Minister Elliot said. Peter Cranna, the Acting Executive Director of Churches of Christ, said this particular facility will be very good in meeting residents needs. Local Federal Member Chris Trevor said The McLean Place facility delivers a vital option for our older people in Blackall and surrounding districts. Providing this option for older residents to stay in their local community is very important. The flexibility of this multipurpose service is an essential asset for the Blackall community. This is an exciting development for the Flynn community and one that will continue to provide more local jobs and aged care beds for the local community. Aged care and other health services to the Blackall community provided by the Barcoo Living MPS include residential care, community care, respite care and Home and Community Care services including Meals on Wheels. See page 3 for photos from the opening.

Blackalls Jo Cripps helped Queensland Rowing make history and take out the Rusty Robertson Trophy for the first time at the Youth Cup regatta in Sydney recently. Presented to the team at the under 21 Australian competition with the highest points score at the end of three days of racing, the Queensland mens and womens crews finished on top with 97 points and broke New Zealands four year dominance of the regatta. Jo coxed the Queensland womens team to a silver medal in the final of the eights race. Queensland was pushed all the way by Western Australia (on

There was a disappointing roll-up of bowls club members last Sunday for social pairs at the Blackall bowls club with only a handful of members turning up. However, those that did play enjoyed themselves and I would like to thank all the non-bowlers and bowlers who did participate in having a bit of fun. The winners on the day were Brad Carolyn and Col Pfingst with plus 13 runner-up being Julie Blucher and Wayne Richardson on plus 10. There will be social play only next weekend at the bowls due to most bowlers going to the Isisford Fishing Competition. Games will start at 10am. Dally

The women of the Blackall CWA celebrate 85 years of service in the region as President Rebecca Parry cuts the birthday cake with help from daughter, Abi

A beautiful day after the really cold days of the past week, according to the reports these balmy days will be short lived with a return to cold conditions by the weekend! I travelled to Barcaldine to attend the meeting, protesting the Queensland State Governments sale of state assets, arranged by the unions and supported by local government and Ag Force. This gathering was rather disappointing as there were very few in attendance apart from the railway employees who are really worried about their jobs in the future. While we do not have a rail link to worry about these days, the concerns voiced by the speakers were those which have been talked of by people in general in our region since the announcement was made by Premier Bligh. It certainly does raise the question of the financial position of the state of Queensland and the ability of the government of the day to be able to manage in times of downturn when the accumulated debt was created in times which were deemed pretty good. There was no union protest when amalgamation was happening! The progress of the Blackall Tambo Regional Council sport and recreational plan was furthered by a well attended meeting in Tambo on Tuesday July 14, with most of the clubs represented, the discussion was frank and lively. These representatives will be further consulted along with other sections of the community when Scott Walker from Ross Planning will be in the region again for more in depth consultation. Thursday, July 16 was the annual meeting and 85th anniversary of the Blackall CWA. I was delighted to chair this historic meeting and enjoy the company of the members for the morning and lunch. A celebration cake was cut by President Rebecca Parry followed by a wonderful account of The Way it Was, compiled and read by Janet Choyce from recollections of Agnes Choyce. I do hope the ladies forward this account to the Queensland Country Womens Association archivist for preservation. It was regrettable that more visitors from the community were not able to share this memorable milestone with the current members. The Blackall Tambo Wild Dog Advisory committee

held a well attended meeting in Tambo on July 21 with national facilitator Greg Mifsud in attendance to advise and to consult Blackall Tambo Regional Council staff and other stakeholders of the necessity for GPS mapping and other relevant information as we endeavor to eradicate this pest from our region. The recommendations from this meeting will come to council for consideration in the budget for the entire Blackall Tambo Regional Council pest management plan covering all known plant and animal pests in the region. The pest management plan is still out in the community for comment. Today, Wednesday, it was my privilege to welcome the Federal Minister for Ageing Justine Elliot MP, Federal Member for Flynn Chris Trevor MP, Vaughan Johnson Queensland State Government Member for Gregory and Church of Christ Care CEO Peter Cranna to Blackall for the occasion of the opening of the new wing of McLean Place. To me this was a truly great achievement by the members of the Barcoo Living Committee present and past who maintained the dream and bought it to fruition overcoming all obstacles to give Blackall and the surrounding area a wonderful facility dedicated to the care of the aged members of our community. The good relationship the Barcoo Living Committee Inc have forged with the Churches of Christ Care ensures the continuation of top quality care into the future. On another note I was speaking to Queensland Health Regional Director Jill Koneman and was delighted to hear that a visiting dentist will be in Blackall during the latter part of the year Unfortunately no permanent dentist as yet!

Blackall CWA celebrate 85 years

Last week, the Blackall Country Womens Association celebrated 85 years of service in the local area, since 1924. The Blackall CWA women gathered in the CWA hall on Friday for their annual AGM, and a few extras, to mark the occasion. Rebecca Parry has been President of the Blackall CWA for four years and says that her time with the group has been rewarding and fulfilling. I think it is wonderful that we have come this far. This year the Blackall CWA have been actively involved in numerous community events including the International Womens Day Breakfast at the National Bistro, stalls days, hosting visitors and various meetings. The group have also lodged an application for a grant from Jupiters Casino for maintenance to their hall, including painting, re-sanding the floors and installing air-conditioning. In a look back at the Blackall CWA over the years, Janet Choyce said that the CWA gave the ladies an opportunity for friendship and outings. They were the backbone of the town when it came to catering for the bigger events. The group is keen to encourage new members to get involved and share some ideas on how the CWA can be actively used in the local community.

President Rebecca Parry cuts the cake as Blackalls CWA women sing happy birthday to the organisation 10 Austin 7s from the Brisbane club drove through Blackall on their way from Brisbane to Longreach, driving around 2700 kilometres in two weeks. The trip was organised by Matt who had done the same trip 20 years ago as a teenager

Arts West 41st School of Creative Arts

Arts West held their 41st School of Creative Arts in Blackall from July 16 to 19, hosted at the Living Arts Centre. Nineteen people participated in three workshops of silversmithing, warm glassmaking and patchwork. For silversmithing seven participants joined Madeline Brown from Brisbane who shared her seven years of experience. The course included sawing, hammering, soldering, stone setting and polishing, resulting in finished products including rings, bracelets, pendants and a belt buckle. Warm glassmaking was run by Cairns-based glass artist Judith Bohm-Parr with five participants attending. The group worked on kiln formed pieces, learnt how to fuse decorative glass in a kiln and how to turn flat pieces into bowls, platters and vases by techniques known as slumping, sagging and draping. Some participants experimented with casting and moulding glass to produce 3D works. The group also experimented with texturing glass and incorporating wire and other found objects into their works. Peggy Phelps from Peggy & Bevs Place in Emerald was in Blackall conducting two patchwork workshops, working on a combination of straight lines, curves and raw edge appliqu. The finished pieces were on display at the official dinner for the Arts West School of Creative Arts, along with some of the jewellery and glass products. The School of Creative Arts is held around the Central West each year, to promote the arts as a vital part of society. Arts West lost their funding from Arts Queensland in 2007 along with many other organisations, and have continued to operate only through the use of remaining funds and individual project funding.

Blackall residents enjoy Tambo road closing for bridge creative arts courses on offer rehab

The road from Tambo to the Springsure turnoff will be closed for a week at the end of July to enable the Department of Transport and Main Roads to undertake works on the Windeyer Creek bridge. A community consultation meeting took place at the Tambo Hall on Monday, July 13, to discuss the closure, which will take place between July 27 and August 2. According to a Main Roads spokesperson, the bridge rehabilitation works includes safety and road efficiency improvements. Main Roads has advised users to seek alternative routes for the week, suggesting detours via Roma or Blackall. The closure was outlined at a recent shed meeting facilitated by the department at Cheshire, where participants were told that the cost of putting in a side track was prohibitively expensive. One of those attending said the feeling of the meeting was that the road closure would be an inconvenience but was not too different to when flooding occurred at the crossing. The department thanked all road users for their patience. All enquiries and feedback regarding the road works can be directed to Main Roads Central West Regional office on 4651 2777 or 0428 101 464.

Anglican Flower show looming

The Anglican Flower show in September is approaching quickly with its vivid and colourful display of varied blooms. However, there appears to be a lack of fruit and vegetable entries. What has happened to our home gardeners? I am sure there are many gardeners who are proud of their produce which could be exhibited. Further, arent children encouraged by their parents to have their own home garden, and in some cases exhibit what they grow. Come on gardeners, lets see some more exhibits.
