PASTORS LETTER

Warm Summer Blessings, This summer our Sunday school classes have helped us reclaim the meaning of stewardship. Over the past several years this word has become almost taboo in the church. Pastors dont like to preach about it, parishioners dont like to read or hear about it. Why? We have made the term synonymous with wanting and needing money. Many people run when they hear Stewardship Season is coming. This summer weve come to understand stewardship as the caring and supporting of, and the using and giving of what God has so abundantly given us. The central themes have been: how do we become better stewards/caregivers of our worship time and space, of our mission opportunities and involvement, of our congregation in fellowship and care, welcome and hospitality, of our staff, our property and our finances. These themes have caused us to look at stewardship differently, and ask good questions. Questions such as, What does it mean to be good stewards of our property? Of course we would take care of the grass, trees, carpet and air conditioners, but what about using the property to reach out to others. In the past we have used the property for help agencies, schools, and now for an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting. How else can we use and care for what God has so abundantly given?

Some have given direct bequests, while others have given through charitable gift annuities. These financial contributions are gifts that continue to give for years beyond the persons life. DISCIPLESHIP
Greetings! I dont know where I heard it said, but at some point in time I heard someone say, you must slow down to speed up. These are wise words. We are so eager to move on to the next thing and be driven by results that its easy to lose sight of the moment or the process. I find these wise words particularly compelling as we prepare for the upcoming program year. Henri Nouwen in a prayer, As Time Goes By, reflects on this. He prays: Lord, time passes by swiftly. Events that a few years ago kept me totally preoccupied have now become vague memories; conflicts that a few months ago seemed so crucial in my life now seem futile and hardly worth the energy; inner turmoil that robbed me of my sleep only a few weeks ago has now become a strange emotion of the past Why is it so hard to learn from this insight? Why am I continuously trapped by a sense of urgency and emergency? Why do I not see that you, God, are eternal, that your kingdom lasts forever, and that for you a thousand years are like one day? O Lord, let me enter into your presence and there taste the eternal, timeless, everlasting love with which you invite me to let go of my time-bound anxieties, fears, preoccupations, and worries. Seek first the Kingdom, you said, and all these other things will be given you as well. All that is time bound will show its real meaning when I can look at it from the place where you want me to be, the place of undying love.

As we prepare for the fall, the beginning of the school year and the upcoming program year, lets be sure to relax and relish the beauty of creation, to slow down to speed up and remember that God loves you. Cultivate the trust that God is present in each moment. Peace,

Nursery Help Needed
Our church family has been so blessed recently with a number of births. This is great news! These beautiful new additions mean a few more children in our Church Nursery on Sunday mornings so we need your help. We need you. We are looking for more nursery volunteers during the worship hour on Sunday mornings. You will not be alone, our professional care giver, Tammy Keeslar, will be with you and guide you. Enrichment 2011 Saturday, September 10th

Enrichment is a wonderful opportunity to grow and learn together with the wider Presbytery of St. Augustine. There are a wide variety of classes and workshops taught by gifted members of our presbytery. The classes are everything from spiritual growth to worship planning to Biblical studies. Registration by September 3rd is $20. Registration after September 3rd is $25.00. Childcare is available for $15.00 This year, Enrichment will take place at Palms Presbyterian Church in Jacksonville. Fall Sunday School

We will kick off our fall Sunday School with a Bible Study August 28th September 25th. In this Bible Study, we will be looking into Growing as Christians in Faith, Love and Hope. Bring your Bibles and opinions for lively discussions on what Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Peter, Paul and others meant in the New Testaments. There are three sections. Each section is stand alone so going away for Labor Day will not be a problem. Come to Sunday School and Grow in Faith, Love and Hope. Bible Study summary Section one - Faith produces works: To understand that faith, love and hope are necessary for a life that honors God; to understand that these virtues are gifts from God; to understand that faith is proven by deeds; and to understand that deeds apart from faith do not please God. Section two - Love prompts action: To understand that God is the source of love; to understand that it is God who enables us to love him and others; to understand that our love, like Gods is to be shared without limit with everyone we meet; and to understand that love is shown, not just in words, but especially through our actions. Section three - Hope goes the distance: To understand that hope in Christ is not wishful thinking, but a sure reality; to understand that the hope we have is not for this life alone, but for eternity; to understand that our hope rests not on ourselves or our circumstances, but on Christ alone; to understand that we are stewards of this hope and have been gifted to share it with others.

Community Concert Series
Saturday, September 10th at 6:00 p.m. we welcome back Great Day to sing for us. Great Day is made up of Bill, Brenda and their daughter, Lisa Ann Ferguson. They provide a wide range of music, from old quartet standards, to fresh new arrangements from some of gospel musics most prolific writers. Sunday, November 6th from 3:00 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. Southern Express will perform. Southern Express is an 18-member, popular big band who perform a variety of standards and contemporary tunes. Please invite your friends and family to enjoy these free concerts to be held at Ft. King.

Crafts Group
Please join the Crafts Group on Thursdays from 1:00 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall. We work on individual projects and joint projects.

The Merry Widows

All widows of the church are invited for socializing and support. The Merry Widows will meet at Bob Evans on Silver Springs Blvd. on Wednesday, August 17th at 1:00 p.m. Please come and join us.

Bloodmobile
The Mission Ministry would like to inform the congregation that the bloodmobile will be at Fort King on August 7th. Donation times are from 9:00 a.m. to10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. We need blood badly. Thank you. Bill Reed

Session Notes June 16, 2011
Celebrations 1. Jodi Lawsons leg is healing well and will not require surgery. 2. Bill Reed gave thanks for a well done and safely finished ASP mission. Also gave thanks that his wife was not injured in a fall down the stairs. 3. The concert last Saturday went well and had 73 in attendance. Motions 1. Motion to approved Cate Martin as a member of the Childrens Discipleship Ministry. 2. Motion to approve Sandra Friend and Gwynn Pealer as members of the Adult Discipleship Ministry. 3. Motion to approve Rev. Tom McNeil as the minister the worship service on July 31, 2011. 4. Motion to approve Carole DeLucian as a new member of the Mission Ministry.

STEWARDSHIP
Grow as Stewards in Faith, Love and Hope!
The theme for this years stewardship program beginning on September 11, 2011 is titled Grow as Stewards through Faith, Love and Hope! In Pauls letter to the people in Thessalonica, he wrote, We continually remember before our God and Father your work produced by faith, your labor prompted by love, and your endurance inspired by hope in our Lord Jesus Christ (1 Thessalonians 1:3). God graciously gives us faith, love, and hope virtues essential for our lives as Christians and as Gods stewards. There are three sections of this program. In each section, we will be focusing on one of the triad of faith, love, and hope. Section one, we are reminded that it is through faith that we have access into Gods grace and a new relationship with him. Not only does faith justify us and give us peace with God (Romans 5:1), we are told by Paul in our theme verse that faith produces works. Faith leads to action. Through faith, we are empowered to fulfill Gods purposes. Our deeds as stewards are evidence of our faith. Section two, we will focus on the virtue of love. Love seeks the welfare of others . . . since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us (1 John 4:11-12). Gods love in Christ will compel us to do things that appear foolish to unbelievers. Gods love prompts us to give freely of our time, talents, and treasures to help others and extend his kingdom. Section three, we will bring focus on the virtue of hope. Through the resurrection of Jesus, we, as believers, are given the victory over death and the assurance of our salvation. Filled with the hope of eternal life with Jesus, we give [ourselves] fully to the work of the Lord, because [we] know that our labor in the Lord is not in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). Your Finance Ministry prays that each of you will be in worship and in Bible study as we focus on the theme Grow as Stewards through Faith, Love and Hope!

Read Music?
Have you ever wanted to learn how to read music? You now have the opportunity to do so for free. John Leschak, our FKPC Music Director, will be offering a Basic Music Reading class this fall. This music class will be held in the Choir Room on Wednesdays beginning October 19th for 4 weeks from 6:00 to 6:45 p.m. John will teach the basics of music note reading. You will learn what time signatures are used for, how long to sing various notes, where to go for repeat signs, who sings in what clef, and basic rhythmic sight singing skills. If you want to participate in this class, please leave a note with your name and phone number on it in John's church mail box in the office. Reading music is a joy. It is truly rewarding to share your talent to the glory of God. John Leschak, Music Director

A Church needs the children. FKPC children are needed to help sing the anthem for Sunday, August 21st. Anyone interested, come to rehearsal 9:00 - 9:30 a.m. on Sunday August 17th and August 21st.
