Sport on the Barcoo

Three games of sets of nine ends were played last Sunday. Woody had no answer to Col Pfingsts consistent play, losing the first two sets 14-3 and 16-5. In another game, Tex Hayward must have still been half asleep with the early start, failing to score a point in the first six ends to lose the first set 18-2. He didnt do much better early in the second, remaining scoreless for the first four ends. He then started to play well but it was too late with Gumby Chapman winning 7-4. In another game, Mal McKellar had far too much experience for learner Jenny Turner, winning the first set 14-2. Some good bowling by Jenny saw the second set tied at 6-6 after the nine ends. Mal won the extra end by 2 shots and the second game ended at 8-6. In pairs, in a game that had some very good bowls and quite a few dead ends, underdogs Roy Black and learner Roland Blucher put a stubborn stand against Dave and John Carter to go down fighting, 31-14. Next week in pairs: D. and J. Carter v C. Pfingst and D. Holden. B singles: J. Blucher v M. Chapman (W. Richardson), J. Bowyer v M. Pfingst (G. MacNamara), L. Kelly v R. Robinson (T. Hayward). A singles: R. Doyle v R. Black (R. Blucher). Games start at 8.30.

The Blackall Pistol Club commenced its shooting calendar with a practice match last Sunday. This enabled shooters a chance to iron out all the rusty bits after the two month Christmas break. It was good to see some new faces showing an interest in the sport and will hopefully come back for another try as the shooting programme progresses. Unfortunately some of our regular shooters were away but 10 shooters took part. Bruce McPaul proved to be the most consistent on the day followed by Noelene Gleeson and Spencer Astill. Medals for the Nev Noske Standard match, that were not available at the end of last year, Dally were presented to the winners. Tambo to work to overcome racing cuts

Sally Cripps
The changes to country racing announced last December, which will see Tambo left with only two race meetings a year after July 1, have been a blow to the club, according to secretary Bill Rogers, but they will do their best to overcome them. Weve overcome things before, he said. We cant throw our hands up, weve got to think of the community. Before the new three-year plan was announced, Tambo enjoyed four meetings a year. The neighbouring Barcoo Amateur Race Club at Blackall has seemingly been a beneficiary of the changes, becoming one of three strategic clubs in the region, having prizemoney increased to $6000 a race, and the number of race meetings increased from four to five. President Paul Banks said while the club was happy enough with the outcome, they would rather see the money spread around the region for the long term sustainability of horseracing. If there are too many meetings in any one town, it gets to the point where nobody goes anymore, he said. In the future Id be happy to see Tambo gain a strategic meeting or two that would be healthy for all. Under the Queensland Racing plan an extra $1.2 million will be given out in a robust funding and race date schedule which features a two-tiered funding model. Strategic status has been given to 28 clubs, which will conduct 185 meetings or 65 per cent of the country racing program. These meetings will carry minimum prizemoney levels of $6000 per race, or $4000 to the winner, an increase of 50 per cent. The increased investment in these centres will ensure a viable and sustainable racing industry, Queensland Racing chairman Bob Bentley said. Clubs such as Tambo have been given one or two meetings a year, which have been deemed community events, and had their administration fund removed. Mr Bentley said that QRLs contribution to these meetings, over $32 000 per meeting for prizemoney and race day expenses, is a significant contribution to conduct a community event. There needs to be urgent recognition from government and local councils, of the significant contribution made by QRL in supporting community

In-form golfers win the Daytonia

Early season in-form golfers, Ashlee Fry and Foot Schluter, won the 18-hole Daytonia from the second-placed team of Guy Elliot and Joe Walker. Golden hole went to G. Elliot, while Pin shot No.7 went to A. Allom. It was very pleasing to see the good field of 19 players tee off in quite warm conditions. On Saturday Blackall will travel to Tambo for the annual Ashes Grudge match, with the Blackall team very confident of getting a lead on Tambos home soil. Hit off time is 1.30pm. This Sunday there is a monthly meeting at 11.00am, followed by Sharkys. Monthly medal names in by 12.15pm for a 12.30 hit off.

At Ms Baileys direction, the Blackall Aquatic Centre came alive with students playing tunnelball at the State School swimming carnival events that return no revenue to the industry, chairman Bob Bentley said. The provision of community events is not the responsibility of the racing industry. Mr Rogers said the loss of the administration fund, $2000 per meeting, was a big blow to Tambo. Weve got to find that money now, which means that meetings that might previously have run at a profit, were now going to find hard to make money from. Finding sponsorship in this day and age is very hard. I just hope Queensland Racing can see clear to bringing that fund back for us. Mr Banks said the Blackall club found it hard to turn a profit at its smaller meetings and was dependent on bar sales. He didnt expect the club to make any more money from having an extra meeting, and said that the horse owners were the ones that would benefit most from the increase in prizemoney. Both men warned of the fine print in the strategy, in which a minimum of 30 acceptances are required for strategic clubs, five per race, and a minimum of 35 starters. If we cant meet that, steps could be taken which would mean that meeting could be lost to the area, Mr Banks said. I think those minimums could be hard to meet at times, and it will be up to owners and trainers to make it work if they want to keep the meetings. According to Mr Rogers, some strategic clubs, based on 2008 figures, have struggled to meet these criteria. The increased prizemoney might not be enough, at certain times of the year, he said. Numbers in July and August are traditionally low. If this means meetings are lost, that could spell the beginning of the end. Tambo itself will need 25 acceptances and 30

I am very pleased to be able to report to you that the enterprise bargaining agreement signed off on by the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council workforce and council has been certified by the Industrial Commission of Queensland. Congratulations to all members of the workforce for their exceptional cooperation during the actual bargaining process and vote. Unforeseen obstacles materialised, making the entire process a very protracted exercise. It is wonderful for everyone to have this agreement finally certified. I trust that all residents took a little of their valuable time to fill in the Blackall-Tambo Regional Council views survey. The data will be collated to enable council to create a corporate plan for the years to come. The draft plan will then be circulated for community comment. If you did not take the opportunity to express your particular views then we can assume that whatever council decides will suit you. It was my privilege to have been guest of honour at the Blackall State School 2009 student leader induction program, where 28% of students assumed a role in the progress of their school. School leaders undertook an oath of loyalty. The School Council members were introduced, with both intermediate and senior school representation. Barcoo Blue secondary house captains are Dylan Dolinski and Deni Benson, and the primary captains are Caitlin McErlean, Rochelle Robinson and Cassidy Flynn. Gidyea Gold secondary house captains are Mark Wemyss and Cindy-Lee Harvey, with Carly Thompson, Emma Sutton and Brendan Mobbs as captains of the primary level. There were awards presented for swimming success with mention of personal best times and the smashing of a long held record. There was great participation by all students in the carnival, which is good to hear. The Townhouse Bursary winners were announced by Mrs Sally Campbell, chairman of the Townhouse Bursary committee, with both Ellerah Campbell and Kyle Richardson being awarded a bursary this year. The Blackall State School senior captains are Shagun Gandhi and Harley Kowald-Dawson, together with primary school captains Amy MacNamara and Kevin Loveday. The induction ceremony was very well planned, giving all attending a great sense of pride and achievement in the Blackall State School, the students and the staff. My congratulations to Principal Jason Smith.

Community Choir in Blackall Kindergarten enjoying aquatic life

New Blackall resident Alison Mobbs and music teacher Fiona Stirling are keen to create performance opportunities for the people of Blackall through the new Blackall Community Choir. The choir is holding its inaugural gathering to have some fun with music, vocals, harmonies and part-singing. Having sung forever, the group will be guided through songs including Waltzing Matilda, California Dreaming and Amazing Grace. Anyone interested in being part of the choir should contact Alison or head along to 66 Shamrock St on Tuesday 17 February at 6:30pm. Alison started singing seriously at university, completing Vocal Studies units as part of a teaching degree. She performed lead roles in QUT musicals as well as at theatre companies in Brisbane and the Gladstone Light Opera Society. She reformed, produced, directed and starred in Charleville Theatre Company musical productions. She participated in the Queensland Arts Council Voices and Tales My Mother Told Me projects, won medals at Charleville Eisteddfods, staged cabaret evenings for local Charleville singers, held jam sessions at Corones Hotel and coordinated many community musical and cultural development projects. From the CD Fiona played me of the previous Blackall Community Choir, there is obviously a lot of talent in town, Alison said. If any of those people are still around, we would love to see them at the first gettogether. It is planned that the choir will explore the different types and styles of music to find a range of pieces that will suit those who come along. Participants are encouraged to bring along suggestions for songs. Who knows what this could lead to? The opportunities are endless and we could all be stars!!!

Three weeks into the year, the children, and staff, at the C&K Kindergarten have engrossed themselves in a great theme: A Trip to the Aquarium. Excited to learn about the world of water, they have covered turtles, life Working hard at the cycles and aquariums. New director Joanne Davison Kindergarten has worked in the education system for almost 5 years. It is just so rewarding to see little kids learning individually, Joanne says. Although currently the numbers are small, second-years Max, Cameron, Makenzie and Lily seem to thoroughly enjoy the stimulating environment. They specifically look forward to playing outside with each other, playing with play dough, their new boat, making pizzas and fishing. Joanne talks about the need for more enrolments at the Kindergarten. To cater for this, the Kindergarten is offering a 1-day a week program for children aged 3 to 4 and a half years. The Kindergarten is supported by the wider community through donations, support at fundraising events and a volunteer committee that handle the day-to-day running. The Kindergarten is now equipped with three new splitsystem air-conditioners. Bec Olive, who has been at the Kindergarten for 10 years, says these are fantastic and make a huge difference to the operation of the centre. Kindergarten is important as it introduces children to structure and routine and being separated from families. Blackall Kindergarten offers a play-based program introduces learning as a fun and meaningful practice, in an environment where each child is enriched, nurtured and encouraged to instigate and maintain his/her own learning. Feel no guilt in laughter, They know how much you care, Feel no sorrow in a smile, Theyre not here to share, You cannot grieve forever, they would not want you to Theyd hope that you would carry on, the way you always do So talk about the good times, and the ways you showed you cared The days you spent together, all the happiness you shared. Let memories surround you, a word someone may say, Will suddenly recapture, a time, an hour, a day. That brings them back so clearly, as though they were still here And fills you with all the feelings, that they are always near. For if you keep those moments, you will never be apart And they will live forever, locked safe within your heart.

State School swimming carnival

The State School swimming carnival last Friday brought an impressive number of students, parents and staff to the pool. After a hard day of swimming, Harley Kowald-Dawson was the open/senior male champion, Cindy-Lee Harvey took out the open/ senior female title, Logan Harlow took out middle male champion and Carly Thompson was female middle champion. The novelty races proved popular, with both students and staff taking to the water for a bit of fun. Noodle mania was a good team-building exercise. The older students towed the younger on pool noodles in a relay quite unlike any other. The relay that stole the show was the all ages relay which saw a team of adults limber up to contest about six teams of students. Mr Ossipow and Miss Fazel joined parents Brent Gerber and Gillian Robinson to make the adult team. It proved a winning combination. The adults domination was no doubt helped by Gillians extraordinary, large floppy orange feet. Also worthy of a mention were the two alarmingly large prep students on the day.

Harley KowaldDawson broke records in the open boys breastroke, clocking 42.16 and open boys butterfly with a time of 32.47. A flying start at the boys backstroke

Bowls Club Unlawful Entry On Saturday 10 January, Bowls Club President Gary Whitfield discovered that the club had been broken into and a large quantity of liquor had been stolen. Thanks to excellent police work by Senior Constable Brent Gerber and Constable Craig Bew a search on a Walter Street house located the stolen liquor and led to the charging of Daniel Joseph Quinn, a 28 year old man from South Australia who was visiting a friend in Blackall. Mr. Quinn appeared at the Blackall Magistrates Court on 19 January where he was sentenced to two months imprisonment. Drug Offences On 28 January, Blackall Police executed Search Warrants on a number of addresses in Blackall. Blackall Police were assisted by an officer from the Dog Squad and Detectives from Longreach Station. As a result two Blackall residents were charged with offences under the Drugs Misuse Act and will be appearing at the Blackall Magistrates Court on 16 February 2009. Blackall Blue Light Committee The guest speaker for the Blue Light Sportsmans Dinner on Saturday 28 March will be Australian cricketer Jeff Thompson. Tickets will be available for purchase shortly and Blackall residents are encouraged to book a table. The Master of Ceremonies and auctioneer for the night will be Tiny the Mouth from the South. between the Police and the Filipino community. He has also pledged to be a trustworthy contact point for members of the Filipino community. Adoption Ceremonies Monday 9 February also saw the adoption of Constable Craig Bew at the Blackall Childcare Centre and Constable Luke Johnson at Saint Josephs Catholic School. Constable Johnson has been performing the role of Adopt-a-Cop since the departure of Constable Richard Hill and will now do so officially. The role of Adopt-a-Cop is very special one as it provides police with the opportunity to build up trust with school students, staff and families. A good relationship between police and the school community is essential for policing to be effective. starters at its meetings to guarantee them. Mr Rogers said Queensland Racings reasoning for cutting meetings and funds to Tambo was that no horses were stabled in the town. If wed been consulted, I would have said look at the figures we have more horses per meeting than any other club in the central west. The only meeting last year that didnt come up to our average was the August one and blow me down, thats one of the meetings theyve given us. He also said Tambo boasted the best facilities for racing in the region, that trainers were more than satisfied with the track, and meetings attracted good crowds, with starters coming from the south west region as well as from the central west. Meetings mean a lot of money to Tambo the motel and pubs are full, people have to get fuel, organisations that cater get a benefit, and its a social event that we need. Mr Banks said the industry in Blackall looked to be strongly placed to get the most out of the increased funding with four trainers and two permanent jockeys already at work. Ive been talking to them and theyre all very keen about the year ahead, he said. Barcaldine has Todd Austin as its sole trainer. Mr Banks said some areas were struggling to get people to ride for training, with no permanent jockey stabled there. Blackall will kick off its horse racing season with a meeting on March 7, featuring Fashions of the Field and a great night of entertainment and food. The Blackall-Tambo Regional Council will receive $156 000 from the state government to employ a community facilitator in Tambo, to build that communitys capacity to undertake projects. The funding will be spread over three years, according to council project officer Fia Hobbs. The announcement of the money for the implementation of the Tambo Urban Design Strategy and Shire Sports Plan was made by Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Main Roads and Local Government, Annastacia Palaszczuk. Blackall-Tambo and 17 other organisations were beneficiaries in the latest round of Blueprint for the Bush funding. Ms Hobbs said the Urban Design Strategy and the Shire Sports Plan were two of Tambos key planning documents. With the strategy weve been able to identify infrastructure development, such as the main street redevelopment, the Multipurpose building, and the Woodies redevelopment, she said. The idea is for this person to work with people to build their skills up, in areas such as writing grants, planning and implementing projects. Its important to build long term skills for people and have the community involved in the planning, not just council. Ms Hobbs said the position would be a part-time one and would be a contracted position. According to Ms Palaszczuk, the funding aimed to strengthen relationships between rural and urban areas, and build the networks and support needed to attract and retain skilled workers in the bush. She said the funding for Tambo would promote long-term sustainability for the community. One of the major goals of the Blueprint for the Bush is for communities to be viable and strong so it is important that they have access to such funding initiatives. Our ongoing investment through the program helps to deliver practical measures to address rural community development issues, assist effective community engagement and help implement existing community plans.
