The SmartDraw Environment

SmartDraw provides an easy-to-use visual environment in which to work. When you launch the software, you see the following.

You may select a specific type of visual to develop, such as a graph, flowchart, project chart, or timeline. Alternatively, use one of many ready-to-use templates that were created after reviewing the most commonly use visuals in many disciplines. Some of the Nursing Related templates are seen below.

Typical Assignments
The discipline of Nursing is broad and covers such areas as Therapeutics, Health Through the Lifespan, Nursing Process, Critical Thinking, Nursing Documentation, Clinical Assessment, and Patient Education. You can use SmartDraw for a variety of assignments in each of these broad areas of study. Below are some ideas for ways to implement SmartDraw to support learning in Nursing. The next section of this guide offers detailed assignment information on the assignments that are italicized below. Nursing History, Process, and Documentation Diagram the major components of Orems self care deficit theory Outline Benners five levels of nursing proficiency Develop a timeline documenting major nursing leaders through history Map the nursing planning process Create a chart to document vital signs over a 24-hour period Clinical Assessment Create a decision tree to differentiate between nursing and medical diagnoses Map the process of interviewing a home care client Develop a family genogram Outline developmental assessment guidelines for infants and toddlers Create a table matching NIC interventions to listed nursing diagnoses Therapeutics and healing Create a mind map used to develop a care plan Develop a decision tree for a patient care decision Create a table of manual healing practices Design a flowchart of the medication administration process Outline the steps for treating a pressure ulcer

CREATING THE EXAMPLE ASSIGNMENT VISUALS NURSING PROCESS ASSIGNMENT: Diagram the major components of Orems self care deficit theory Theory Diagrams You could use any number of SmartDraw templates to create theory diagrams. Flowcharts have a variety of shapes, lines, and connectors from which to select and a flowchart template would be a good place to start. Theory diagrams show relationships between conceptual and actual entities. Assign them when students need to demonstrate their understanding of theoretical processes or models. This assignment asks students to diagram Dorothea Orems Theory of Self Care Deficit. It outlines when adults are incapable of caring for themselves or others and thus nursing assistance is required. Start by opening a blank Flowchart in SmartDraw:

Best Practices in creating a Theory Diagram with SmartDraw Determine your entities. Which concrete concepts comprise the theory? Create shapes to correspond to each concept or type of concept. Theory diagrams can be personalized since there are no standard shapes used to represent theoretical concepts. Add lines and arrows. How does each theoretical entity relate to the others? Use lines and arrows to indicate one-to-one, one-to-many, and directional relationships. Add citation. Use the Add Text feature to add source information. Finalize the layout. SmartDraw offers easy, one-click ways to rotate add color, rotate a diagram, or otherwise change the layout.

CLINICAL ASSESSMENT ASSIGNMENT: Create a decision tree to differentiate between nursing and medical diagnoses Decision Trees Use decision trees when a student nurse must choose between several courses of action. These visual tools are particularly helpful for complex, multi-stage decisions. This assignment measures the students understanding of

whether a patients condition represents a nursing diagnosis, a medical diagnosis, or a problem that requires interdisciplinary teamwork. Start by opening a blank Decision Tree in SmartDraw:

Best Practices in creating a Decision Tree with SmartDraw State the key question. Determining whether a problem represents a nursing or medical diagnosis requires an answer to the following question: can the condition resolve with independent intervention by a nurse? Add decisions. Explore all possibilities and consequences that correspond to the answers to the key question above, then add relevant branches. Add unknowns. Sometimes the effect of a decision is unknown which can be easily added in SmartDraw. Split the tree. Complex, multi-faceted decision trees may at some point require a split to a separate tree. Test the decision tree. Validate your decision tree with a simulation using actual data. For the assignment above, use actual patient health data to determine whether the patient requires a nursing or a medical diagnosis.

THERAPEUTICS ASSIGNMENT: Create a mind map used to develop a care plan Mind Maps Mind mapping is another visual technique for showing graphic relationships between ideas and concepts. The visual elements are arranged according to importance and are classified into groupings or branches. Mind maps encourage a brainstorming approach to planning. When using mind maps for patient care plans, use shapes to represent aspects of the nursing process as well as relevant patient data. Shapes on the mind map might include Assessment data Nursing diagnoses Interventions Patient lab data Medications

This assignment asks students to create a mind map a plan of care. Start by opening a blank Mind Map in SmartDraw:

Best Practices in creating a Mind Map with SmartDraw Define your main idea. Place that concept in the center or at the top of your page. For a care plan, it is usually the patient rather than the disease. Connect other ideas. These may look like the branches of a tree or the spokes of a wheel. If your main idea is a patient, include information about the patient (symptoms, relevant medical or social history, etc.). Add branches. Each branch may represent an aspect of patient care, like intervention or evaluation. Add ideas branches. Mind map branches should not be constrained by limiting the number of possible ideas on each branch. You might group related ideas or ideas on a specific branch by color or shape. Make connections. Use arrows and lines to make connections between ideas or groups of ideas. Add narrative. If needed, define the connecting lines to explain how the ideas are related.

HEALTH AND WELLNESS ASSIGNMENT: Chart the use of complementary medicine by age group Bar Charts A bar chart is used for comparisons either between different groups, or for the same group over a specified period of time. For ease of comparison, you should arrange bars by size but they can be either ascending or descending. There is no measurement value to the thickness of the bars, so they should remain a consistent width. This assignment asks students to develop a bar chart showing the use of complementary and alternative medicine practices by age group. Start by opening a blank Bar Chart in SmartDraw:

Best Practices in creating a Bar Chart with SmartDraw Collect your data. You may decide to collect the same data points for a given population over a period of time. You might instead decide to take a data snapshot and collect the same data point for two, three, or more groups. Because this assignment asks the students to compare age groups, it will be a snapshot bar chart. Create series and categories. Comparison groups are called categories in SmartDraw, and the data points are known as series. Add or delete as many categories and series as needed. This assignment looks at ten age groups but only one data point, so you will add categories and use only one series. Add your data. Build a bar chart by entering key information into a Data Table which can then be hidden or exposed after the visual representation is generated. Categories will become the x-axis and series will translate to the y-axis. Add labels. Enter the chart title, the names of the categories and series, and any additional labels needed. Add citation. Use the Add Text feature to add source information if needed. Finalize the layout. SmartDraw offers easy, one-click ways to change color or style, edit how the legend is displayed, or rotate the chart.
