CHAPTER II METHODOLOGY

Research Design

This study will be using the experimental research design specifically, two groups with control group technique. This design will determine the difference of the pre test and post test scores of the experimental groups and the control group. The selection of participants will be performed through randomized trial.

Setting This study will be conducted in Davao City particularly in San Pedro College. San Pedro College is located at 12. C. de Guzman St. Davao City, Philippines. It is a catholic institution of learning committed to Christian Education. San Pedro San Pedro College was founded in 1956 by the Dominican Sisters of the Trinity from Quebec, Canada who owns and manages the institution. It began as a School of Nursing of San Pedro Hospital, the first Catholic Hospital in Mindanao, which the religious sisters have been operating since their arrival in 1948. San Pedro College is a Catholic Institution of learning dedicated to the Christian education of the people of Davao and its neighboring regions. The college offers Nursing, Pharmacy, Medical technology, Physical therapy, Commerce, Psychology, Biology, Computer science, Information technology, and Secondary education. One of the four-year courses of this institution is Bachelor of Science in Nursing which aims to prepare graduates to practice nursing with high quality.

Participants The participants were the Level IV Nursing students enrolled at San Pedro College, Davao City for the school year 2011-2012. The participants must love music. This study will be using a non-probability quota sampling technique. The researchers have identified the quota sample to include 45 subjects. These subjects must be a 4th year nursing student of San Pedro College for school year 2011-2012. The possible subjects will be divided into 3 exclusive subgroups; Experimental group 1, Experimental group 2 and a control group. The subjects are selected according to their pre-test scores. Each subgroup would have respondents which scores are the same with the other subgroup to ensure equality.

Measures A self-made questionnaire and hand-outs will be utilized in this study. The questionnaire will be used for the pre-test and the post test. The topics inculcated in the hand-outs would include the subject matters which are created by the proponents of the study, general information would be the category. The questions inculcated in the questionnaire would include the subject matters discussed in the hand-outs.

Data Gathering Procedure Permission to conduct the study: letters of approval and request shall be addressed to San Pedro College research committee for validation for administering and conducting the instruments planned.

Administration of tests: researchers will be reproducing the test materials after proper validation. The selected subjects are given 15 minutes to read and study the hand outs. Experimental group 1 would be hearing a classical music. Experimental group 2 would be hearing acoustic music. The control group would be reading and studying without music. After the given time, the participants would be given a post-test questionnaire.

Statistical Tool To compute the validity and reliability of the results of the study; the statistical tool to be used in the study would be ANOVA.

Definition of Terms

Music Music refers to sounds, usually produced by instruments or voices that are arranged or played in order to create an effect. The music used in the study would include the classical and acoustic instrumental music.

Memory Memory is the retained learned information and knowledge of past events and experiences which the person is able to retrieve. Information It entails the collected facts and data about a specific subject.
