CURRICULUM CHANGES
Old program had a good sequence:

Early Bible Stories

Bible Studies I

Sacraments, Reconciliation, & First Communion

Bible Studies II

Bible Studies III

High School Faith

Catholic Morality

Confirmation
CURRICULUM CHANGES

8 courses in the Religious Formation Course of Study x 2 for equal number of deaf and
hearing classes = 16 classes

We only have SIX good sized classrooms

We’ve been getting by with creative partitioning of classrooms

CURRICULUM CHANGES
Reasons for the Sequence

Our focus is on Religious Formation

Parents’ focus and traditions are on the Sacraments

Religious Formation is a life-long process

Parents feel geographically challenged and can only afford to bring them for
Sacramental Preparations

As such, courses BEFORE the Sacraments became PRE-REQUISITES

CURRICULUM CHANGES
Our numbers are GROWING with more and more families coming and calling everyday

To accommodate the overflow, this year we thought of having a two-tier schedule:

9:45-10:50 am

12:30 - 1:30 pm

Primary grades in the morning

Secondary grades in the afternoon

The second schedule would also ‘free-up’ the staff to teach courses for our deaf students
CURRICULUM CHANGES
Other solutions we thought of:

Asking Vernon Elementary for classroom space on Sundays

Having canopies outside with chairs and portable whiteboards for classes

Further splitting up our classrooms with more creative partitioning

CURRICULUM CHANGES
We finally came to terms:

We can’t do it all...
CURRICULUM CHANGES

The reality is we’re only asked by the Archdiocese and Canon Law that we prepare
students for the Sacraments of:

Reconciliation

First Communion

Confirmation
CURRICULUM CHANGES

But because we don’t want to lose our students, we are suggesting a new curriculum and
sequential course of study
A THREE YEAR CYCLE

SACRAMENTS

Before students can

receive a Sacrament,
they must have
completed at least one

MULTIMEDIA AT HOLY
ANGELS
ABOUT DEAF CHILDREN

90% of deaf children are born to parents who have no

knowledge of sign language or deaf culture

Most deaf children don’t have access to captioned TV,

to the radio, to everyday conversation, and to
incidental learning opportunities

This is where most of our background knowledge

comes from
ABOUT DEAF CHILDREN

Most deaf children don’t learn a language until they’re

in school

As a result, many deaf children have delays in language

and communication

All children learn in different ways
