Physiotherapists formed their 1st professional Association in 1921 called the AMERICAN WOMENS PHYSICAL THERAPEUTIC ASSOCIATION led by MARY MCMILLAN President of the Association. Mary McMillan and Marguerite Sanderson developed the Reconstruction Aide training program in 1918

History of Physiotherapy

The history of physical therapists begins with Reconstruction Aides (above), civilians recruited and trained by the U.S. Army during World War I to meet wartime needs for

reconstructive therapy.

"Reconstruction Aide" was replaced with "Physiotherapy Aide." What was originally called the American Women's Physical Therapeutic Association Later Changed to American Physiotherapy Association in the late 1930s. 1955 men were added to the Association and the Army Corporation to team up with Physiotherapy Aide
