1/4 teaspoon fresh ground black
pepper
1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper
1 package (6 ounces) salad
greens
2 packages (4 to 5 ounces each)
fresh blackberries, washed
and drained
1 large avocado, diced
3 tablespoons crumbled goat
cheese
2 tablespoons fresh lemon or
lime juice
1. In a small, non-stick skil-
let, add the pecans and drizzle
with 1/2 tablespoon of the
honey. Stir
and saute
until the
nuts are

and fragrant,
about 4 minutes. Cool and set
aside.
2. In small bowl, whisk
together the oil, vinegar, the
remaining 1 tablespoon of
honey, garlic, mustard, salt and
the black and cayenne pepper.
Set aside.
3. In salad bowl, toss togeth-
er salad greens, blackberries and
pecans. Add the avocado and
goat cheese on top. Sprinkle
with the lemon or lime juice.
Pour on dressing and toss gently.

Cucumbers and melons first
produce staminate (male) flow-
ers that only produce pollen.
The female (pistillate) flowers
are produced later. High temper-
atures and low moisture condi-
tions can delay the formation of
the female flowers.
The heat will also interfere
with proper pollination of toma-
toes and other vegetables, so
even though they flower, the
flowers will fall away due to
failure of the pollen to function
properly, or due to the fact that
the heat killed the pollen. Cooler
temperatures that come with the
monsoons should solve this
problem, too.

Many New Mexico garden-
ers are reporting troubles with
their tomatoes, chiles, cucum-
bers and melons this year. The
problems range from small fruit
to no fruit on the plants.
There are many factors that
may be contributing to the prob-
lems, but the most likely culprits
are the high temperatures, low
moisture and soil mineral prob-
lems.
For tomatoes and chiles, the
primary problem seems to be a
combined effect of the factors
mentioned above. Low water,
coupled with high heat and,
often, high mineral salt content
has caused stunted plants and
reduced fruit size. The cold
weather slowed tomato plant
development, and then the heat
prevented proper development
of the size of the fruit.
Fruit size development
results from water filling the
cells that form the fruit. Heat
and drought prevent adequate
water from reaching the fruit,
even when the plants are well
irrigated. Protection from drying
winds and some shade during
the heat of the day can help
retain water in the plants and
allow better fruit development.
Salts in the soil, water and
amendments added to improve
the soil compound the problem.
Many people having problems
mention adding manure or com-
post to the garden. In the pres-
ence of adequate rainfall, this is
good. However, when water is
inadequate to leach mineral salts

A nationwide survey of
more than 5,000 veterinary
hospitals was recently com-
pleted by the American
Heartworm Society (AHS) to
gauge the incidence of heart-
worm disease in the United
States. The sad news: the sur-
vey documented heartworm in
almost every county and
parish in the country.
If youre a pet owner, here
are facts you should know
about heartworm disease:
1. Blame the mosquito.
Pets dont infect each other,
they require a go-between: the
mosquito. More than 20
species of mosquitoes are
known to spread heartworm.
And while mosquito repellents
are a good idea, they dont take
the place of monthly heart-
worm preventives.
2. Your pet cant escape the
threat of heartworm disease.
Heartworm incidence has been
documented in all 50 states.
Thats why the American
Heartworm Society guidelines
recommend that all U.S. pets
be given heartworm preven-
tive on a monthly basis, and
dogs be tested annually for
heartworm.
3. Cats get heartworm dis-
ease, too. Dogs are more sus-
ceptible than cats, but cats can
become seriously ill from just
a few worms.
4. Prevention beats the cure
any day. Dogs with heartworm
disease can and should be
treated, but the cost is signifi-
cant; treating a dog can cost
more than $1,000 and dogs
need careful monitoring and
cage confinement for a month
or more. Meanwhile, there is
no effective medication for
treating cats with heartworm
disease.

mal protection from heart-

We Are The Experts in Rebuilding Parapets
Lets talk about parapet repairs. Many companies are using a fiberglass mesh with a new color coat. This method
doesnt last much more than five years. Typically within two to three years, this type of rebuild will begin to have
problems with de-laminating. The next method used is a stucco netting 20-gauge wire (chicken wire) with a
new base coat. Better than the fiberglass mesh system, however, this system is likely what you already have. Adding
more wire with a new base doesnt fix the problem.
Also, some companies are using synthetic stucco without the waterproof membrane applied prior to it. When
moisture sits on your parapets, it seeps through the synthetic stucco and lodges in your existing color coat. Therefore,
blistering and peeling occur, taking the existing color coats and base coats with it, usually within two to five years.
The method I use is 1/8" thick diamond coned metal lath, to hold the new base coat, which is approximately 3/8"
to 1/2" thick, creating a new moisture barrier. The new base coat stops the moisture. The color coat lasts longer
because it bonds best to a base coat on flat surfaces better than color to color. We rebuild all parapets, take care of all
deteriorated areas, then re-color coat the entire home. Our parapet rebuilding system has a minimum of 95 percent
success rate over an 11- to 14-year period.

I have had sellers tell me that
they are not about to remove
anything, and that is their pre-
rogative to show their home as it
is. But, the question remains. Do
you want prospective buyers to
look at your home, or your
stuff?
Buyers may not even come
by if the pictures on the
Internet/MLS look cluttered.
Remember, they need to visual-
ize their belongings in your
house. It is up to you. But, I can
tell you from experience what
my buyers say after we leave
cluttered houses. Its not pretty.

A: The Ernest Borel watch
company was founded in
1859. I suspect the watch you
have is what was marketed as
a Cocktail Watch, which
featured a kaleidoscope dial.
That particular dial had five
different patterns, namely
flower, sun, arrows, star and
wheel. The Cocktail was
launched in 1953 and soon
became one of the most popu-
lar designs marketed by the
Ernest Borel company. As
with most collections, the
value of a vintage watch
depends on three major fac-
tors: rarity, condition and
desirability. I contacted several
dealers who specialize in vin-
tage watches, and they agree
that your watch would retail in
the $150 to $350 range.

Finally, a word on heat
retention. I laid a thermometer
on my porch in the shade and
the temperature was 84
degrees. Then I placed the
thermometer on an area of
mulch and the temperature
was 98 degrees. Finally I put
the thermometer on gravel and
it couldnt give an accurate
reading because it maxed out
the thermometer at 125
degrees!

When I go out on a design
consultation I am often told I
dont want gravel everywhere
and I dont want grass. My
response is, Then you want
mulch? The answer is usually
NO. I dont want mulch
because it will blow away.
Some of that is true, but
gravel and grass have their
own problems. If youve trav-
eled to other parts of the coun-
try, youve noticed that the
Southwest is alone in its nega-
tive attitude toward bark
mulches. In the rest of the
U.S., mulch is heralded as the
answer to improve the soil,
prevent weeds, hold in mois-
ture and give the landscape a
pleasant, organic look. After
30 years of installing mulches,
here are my conclusions.
Large bark nuggets will not
blow away, but they look very
coarse. (Theyre ugly.)
Free city mulch is free
but its extra ugly.
Small bark nuggets look
nice, but they can blow away.
Shredded bark, especially
cedar, will stay in place. The
stringy nature of shredded
mulch keeps it from blowing.
It looks better than gravel, has
lower maintenance than grass
Shredded bark mulch will
improve the look of your
landscape while retaining
moisture.

The Hot Springs. There are
two possibilities for a soak: The
Bath House and Giggling
Springs. The Bath House has
private tubs and consequently
clothing is optional. Giggling
Springs has an outdoor pool and
swim suits are required.
The First American
Revolution. While the offi-
cial American Revolutionary
War may have begun in
Massachusetts in 1775, the first
American Revolution began
right here in New Mexico
almost 100 years earlier. The
Pueblo Revolt started on August
10, 1680, and resulted in a total
victory for New Mexico
Pueblos over Spanish coloniz-
ers. Some priests were killed,
and the rest of the entire Spanish
population of about 3,400 peo-
ple beat a hasty retreat to El
Paso, Texas, and stayed there for
over a decade.
That historic victory is being
commemorated this August
10th on its 331st anniversary.
Activities include an early
morning run from Walatowa to
Guisewa, traditional dances,
Native American flute music,
Native crafts, and Native food.

of a frequently borrowed
Coleman lantern. And some
might remember the old bill-
board advertising the Jemez
Burger as one Jell of a
Jamburger. There might be
healthier places to eat and drink
in Jemez Springs, but none have
the cachet of this place. By the
I hope Jemez Springs is
high on your list of must-see
places this year. Despite the
tremendous acreage lost to
fires in these mountains,
Jemez Springs, as well as
Jemez Pueblo, escaped fire
damage. However, economic
damage continues. I know
many of us would like to help
these folks. How about a day
trip? Let me suggest some rea-
sons to go there.
Jemez State Monument.
The Monument consists of the
remains of Guisewa, an ances-
tral village of the present day
Jemez Pueblo which is located
in Walatowa, 12 miles south.
The most striking feature is the
church, Mission San Jos de
los Jmez. Thought to have

have been built almost 400 years ago.

of these simple seashell sou-
venirs suitable for saving!
Wind Chimes
Select a small seashell and
glue it on the end of a 23-inch
length of fishing line or twine.
(If your shell has a large enough
hole, thread the line through the
hole and tie a knot instead.)
Make several. When the glue is
dry, arrange each line vertically
in front of you with the shells on
the bottom. Set an 8- to 10-inch
piece of driftwood, a small
branch or a dowel across the top.
Tie the loose ends of the lines
around the driftwood and knot,
making sure that when the shells
dangle, they will touch each
other when a gentle breeze
blows. Or, intersperse several
more shells on the length of fish-
ing line or twine. Knot each one
evenly in place and end with the
final shell dangling.

put green into action throughout

Commute to work. While
hopping in the car may be an
easy option, taking public trans-
portation, biking or even car-
pooling can start off your day in
an environmentally conscious
way.
Rethink drinking containers.
Before you grab that cup of joe,
reconsider the type of drinking
container youre using each day.
Get into the habit of reusing a
mug or glass for water at the
office.
Watch your printing habits.
If you have to use large quanti-
ties of paper, suggest your office
buy recycled paper and make it
a habit to print on both sides to
cut use in half. If youve printed
off too many copies, be sure
there is a recycling bin nearby to
dispose of the extra paper.
Evaluate the restrooms.
Take a close look on your next
bathroom break to see if one-at-
a-time paper towel dispensers
are being used. These dispensers
help cut down on the use of
excess paper and will help your
organization save money.
Remember to bring this up with
your facility manager if theyre
not currently using energy sav-
ing technology.
Turn off the lights. Avoid
leaving the light on in the copy
room if its going to be unused at
night. The same goes for other
common areas in your office. Be
sure to turn off your computer
and power strip at the end of
your workday and encourage

scraps or sections from when
the carpet was installed, you
can replace that stained section
with the exact same type of
carpet, which usually creates
the best match (as long as the
rest of the carpet isnt too old,
stained or faded, in which case
you may want to consider
replacing the entire carpet). If
you dont have extra scraps,
never fear take an unstained

If the stain is less than three
inches in diameter, consider
getting a carpet patch kit that
includes a circular cutter. This
will allow you to cut out the
stain and then cut a patch that
is exactly the same size and
shape.
If the stain is bigger, use a
box cutter to trim the stained
section plus an inch or two
beyond the stain. A metal or
wood ruler will help you make
a straight cut. Cut away the
padding in the section as well.
Take the padding and carpet
section to the carpet store to
match both the color and type
of carpet, as well as the correct
type and thickness of the
padding.
Back at home, measure and
trim the new padding and car-
pet to fit the cut-out section as
closely as possible. Tack the
padding in place with either a
bit of carpet glue and/or sta-
ples. Double-check the fit of
the new patch, then spread car-
pet glue over the bottom of the
patch, as well as a light bead
under the edges of the carpet
surrounding the hole.
Carefully press the carpet
patch into place.
Making sure no glue is on
your fingers, rough up the car-
pet pile to hide the edges of the
patch. Allow the glue to dry
for about half a day, then vac-
uum.

Thus Jacob finally meets the
peculiar children and discovers
that the truth of his grandfathers
tales is even stranger than he
imagined. And it becomes clear
that his new friends are in grave
danger from a doom that Jacob
has unwittingly led right to their
door. Now, he may be the only
one who can save them.
The atmosphere of this novel
is exquisitely weird, blending
the musty oddness of an old-
fashioned childrens tale with a
contemporary energy, tinged
with an underlying creepiness
that gives the reader shivers.
And, the vintage photographs
that Jacob describes are sprin-
kled throughout the pages. It

On Aug. 14, 1751, Francis
Blandy falls into a coma and dies
in his home outside London, a
victim of arsenic poisoning at the
hand of his daughter, Mary, who
wanted his fortune and the free-
dom to be with her married lover.
Mary was hanged from the gal-
lows after being found guilty of

Sometimes I say Im going to
meet my sister at the caf
even though I have no sister
just because its such a beautiful
thing to say. Ive always thought
so, ever since I read a novel in
which two sisters were constant-
ly meeting in cafs. Today, for
example, I walked alone on the
wet sidewalk, wearing my rain
boots, expecting someone might
ask where I was headed. I
bought a steno pad and a watch
battery, the store windows
fogged up. Rain in April is a
kind of promise, and it costs
nothing. I carried a bag of books
to the caf and ordered tea. I like
a place thats lit by lamps. I like
a place where you can hear peo-
ple talk about small things, like
the difference between azure
and cerulean, and the price of
tulips. Its going down. I
watched someone who could be
my sister walk in, shaking the
rain from her hair. I thought,
even now florists are filling their
coolers with tulips, five dollars a
bundle. All over the city there
are sisters. Any one of them
could be mine.
