4.9 Surface Launch Plugs for Combination Casing Strings

Use combination plugs to cement multiple casing string sizes and weights in a single casing string. Use of combination cementing plugs allows the cementing of tapered casing strings while helping ensure efficient cement removal from the casing ID. The following guidelines should be considered when cementing combination strings with combination top plugs: 1. Use a champher, radius-reducing swage, or other transition ID edge to prevent damage to the wiper. 2. Plan for a pressure increase when the plug enters the smaller-ID casing. Halliburton cementing plugs are supplied for use with water-, oil-, and synthetic-based fluid systems. In most cases, proper plug selection is required to help ensure rubber/fluid compatibility. Caution should be used when using plugs with oil-/syntheticbased drilling fluids. For more information about plug/fluid compatibility, contact Tool Systems in the Duncan Technology Center.

4.9.1 Top Combination Plugs

Table 4.9.1.A provides information about top (surface launch) combination plugs (Figure 4.9.1.A). The larger top wipers are used to wipe the larger casing size of the combination plug. The smaller-OD wipers wipe the smaller casing IDs. Halliburton combination cementing plugs are supplied for use with water-based fluid systems. In most cases, proper plug selection is required to help ensure rubber/fluid compatibility. Caution should be used when using plugs with oil-/synthetic-based drilling fluids. For more information about plug/ fluid compatibility, contact Tool Systems in the Duncan Technology Center. Table 4.9.1.A provides information about combination plugs for casing with two casing sizes. Combination plugs can also be provided with three or four casing sizes. For combinations not listed, contact the Global Casing Equipment mailbox.

4.10.1 Omega Latchdown Tubing Plugs and Baffles

The Omega latchdown tubing plug is a dual-purpose, top cementing plug that wipes cement from tubing during slurry displacement. When the plug is pumped to place in the baffle, the plug acts as a backpressure valve and helps hold the cement column in place around the outside of the tubing string. After the tubing plug is latched in the baffle, wireline operations can continue without moving the plug off its seat. The Omega latchdown tubing plug (Table and Figure 4.10.1.A) consists of molded rubber around a cast aluminum insert and made up with an aluminum mandrel. A snap ring and rubber seal element are mounted on the plug to allow backpressureholding ability. A drillable cast-iron baffle (Table and Figure 4.10.1.B) is placed in the tubing string between joints, usually one joint above the shoe. This baffle acts as both a plug seat and anchor for the latchdown plug. After the cement is mixed, the Omega latchdown tubing plug is released from the surface slurry. It is pumped into the baffle, where the aluminum snap ring locks into the baffle undercut. When the pump pressure is released from the tubing, the latch ring holds the plug in place. The latchdown plug and baffle may be drilled out if necessary with a roller-cone rock bit. PDC bits should not be used to drill out this equipment.

4.10.2 Omega Five-Wiper Latchdown Tubing Plugs and Baffles

The Omega five-wiper latchdown tubing plug combination (Table and Figure 4.10.2.A) is another variation of a top plug for wiping tubing during cement displacement. This design uses a tubing-sized fivewiper plug and latch-in nose, which is attached to the top Omega plug. The two plugs are held together with a threaded drillable tool. The combination of the two wiper plugs provides excellent wiping of the tubing ID and separation of the cement and wellbore fluids. If the plug is to be drilled out, a roller-cone rock bit should be used because of the large amount of aluminum in the plug.

4.10.3 Double Omega Latchdown Plugs and Baffles

The double Omega latchdown plug uses two Omega plugs joined by a drillable aluminum tool. This plug uses a baffle that is usually installed in the casing string one joint off bottom. Table and Figure 4.10.3.A provide a schematic of this plug and the baffle part numbers used with this plug. When pumped to a shutoff, the bottom Omega plug passes through the baffle. When 500 to 1,000 psi is applied to the tubing string, the plug seats on its shoulder and latches into the locking mechanism between the two Omega plugs. This combination of two rubber Omega plugs provides excellent wiping of the casing ID. If the plug and baffle must be drilled out, only a roller-cone rock bit should be used.

4.11 Casing Latchdown Plugs

A latchdown casing plug and baffle can be used above most conventional floating equipment to help control fluid and pressure from below. Preventing fluid entry into the casing string can help allow release of surface pressure immediately after the cement column has been pumped into place. If the plug is properly latched into a latch in the baffle, the latchdown feature helps prevent the cement or top plug from moving back up the casing. A casing latchdown plug may be used in place of a float collar. The casing does not need to be floated in the hole. Casing latchdown plugs may be of two types:

Three- or five-wiper plug with a latchdown nose and baffle

For both types, a latchdown baffle must be placed in the casing as the plug is being run in the hole. The baffle is typically installed one or two joints above the guide or float shoe. The drillable baffle is undercut to receive the snap ring of the plug nose.

4.11.2 Casing Latchdown Plugs (Three and Five Wiper)

Casing latchdown cementing plugs (Figures 4.11.2.A and 4.11.2.B) are available in the 4 -in. through 7 5/8-in. casing sizes. The top portion of the plug can have either three or five wipers. The lower portion has a latch-in nose to latch into a baffle installed in the casing string. If the casing string will not be floated into the hole, the latchdown plug, when landed and latched in its seat, can prevent backflow of cement into the casing string. Table 4.11.2.A shows dimensions of the plugs and part numbers for both the plug and baffles.

4.11.3 MSC Omega Latchdown Plug

The MSC Omega latchdown plug (Figure 4.11.3.A) acts as the top cement plug and follows the cement slurry down the casing to help reduce the possibility of contamination or channeling with the drilling mud or fluid used to displace the cement. A 4 -in. Omega plug and MSC are combined to create a latchdown plug that is available only in the 4 -in. casing size. Other latchdown plugs could be made as a customer service item (CSI). 4.12 SSR Subsurface Release Cementing Plug System

With the SSR subsurface release cementing plug system, cementing operations can be performed from a floating vessel or fixed platform that uses a subsea wellhead. The SSR cementing plug set is installed in the top joint of the casing string and is made up to the bottom of an installation tool that is attached to the casing string. The installation tool and casing string are lowered on a drillpipe string, landed, and sealed in the subsea wellhead on the ocean floor. When the tool and string have landed, the well can be circulated before cementing operations. The bottom SSR plug is released ahead of the cement by a weighted plastic ball dropped down the drillstring. The ball lands on a seat of the bottom plug, releasing the bottom SSR plug. When the bottom SSR plug lands on the float collar, a bypass mechanism allows the cement to pump around the ball. After all the cement has been mixed and pumped into the drillpipe, a drillpipe releasing dart is launched from the surface to wipe the drillpipe ID and release the top SSR plug. The drillpipe plug latches and seals in the top SSR plug. The top SSR plug is then pumped to a pressure shutoff on the float collar. Figures 4.12.A through 4.12.C shows a typical cementing operational schematic of the SSR plug set.

4.12.9 High-Strength Oil-Resistant 24-Tooth NR SSR Plug Set

The high-strength NR SSR plug set (Figure 4.12.9.A) is designed to be used when casing is pressure-tested to 7,000 through 10,000 psi when bumping the top cementing plug. The casing may be pressure-tested while the cement in the annulus is set and still in the fluid stage. Testing the casing immediately after bumping the top cementing plug can prevent cracking of the cement and formation of a microannulus between the casing and set cement. Table 4.12.9.A provides more information.

Important: If this plug set is to be used for pressure-testing the casing to elevated pressures, a high-strength float collar must be used. The plug set is available only in 9 5/8-in., 13 3/8-in., and 10 -in. 9 5/8-in. tapered string of casing. All three plug sets are of the nonrotating type to provide easy drillout with PDC bits after pressure testing is complete.

4.12.10 Combination SSR Top Plug

SSR plugs can be used to fabricate a top plug for a tapered casing string (Figure 4.12.10.A). The SSR top plug fabrication always uses the largest plug on top with a smaller casing SSR plug or portion of a plug on bottom. The plugs are usually attached with an aluminum or plastic threaded sleeve. Table 4.12.10.A provides the casing information and part numbers for a standard combinationplug.

Plug sets may also be fabricated using NR plugs for tapered casing strings. Figure 4.12.12.A shows NR combination plug sets. These plugs must be landed on an NR float collar to prevent spinning of the plug during drillout. Table 4.12.12.Aprovides information about these plugs. This plug set can be drilled out with a roller-cone rock bit or a fixed-blade PDC bit after cementing operations are completed. This plug is available only in 10 -in. 9 5/8-in. and 10-in. 13 3/8-in. combination strings. Other combinations may be ordered as CSIs.

4.13 SSR Swivel/Equalizer

The SSR subsurface release swivel/ equalizer assembly (Figure 4.13.A) serves two functions: mandrel of the release mechanism while holding the lower mandrel stationary. This action can occur when the running tool is being made up. The swivel/equalizer assembly allows the running tool to be turned while the upper and lower mandrels stay stationary. A swivel/equalizer valve should be run on each SSR plug set.

It equalizes pressure above the top plug and the drillpipe. It allows the running tool to be turned during makeup.

Pressure above the top plug should be relieved to help prevent the top plug body from being sheared off by the release mechanism. After the SSR plug assembly is installed into the landing joint, circulation pressure bypasses the wipers on the cementing plugs and is trapped above the top plug. During the release of either the bottom plug or the top plug, circulation is stopped and pressure is allowed to decrease, creating a differential pressure across the top plug body. If the pressure is not relieved, a pressure force acting downward on the top plug is created. This pressure force tries to push the top plug down and can shear the threads off the plug body. The swivel/equalizer assembly allows the pressure to be relieved into the drillpipe and helps equalize the pressure across the top plug. The swivel feature allows the running tool to be turned for makeup purposes.

Note: Type H SSR plug sets with a 3 3/4-in. 6-stub Acme box thread looking up may be attached directly to the standard swivel equalizer by removing the lower connector from the swivel mandrel.

The SSR Swivel/Equalizer Manual (Part No. 101247133) can be found on the HalWorld website at the following link: <http://halworld.corp.halliburton.com/ hes/hesps/hespszi/hespszice/hespszice_ Manl/hespszice_Manl_CsgSales/ hespszice_Manl_CsgSales_CSM.asp> Figure 4.13.B, along with Tables 4.13.A through 4.13.D, provides parts information about the common threads available for SSR swivel/equalizer valves.

4.14 SSR Plug System Releasing Dart

The SSR plug system releasing dart is launched from the surface when SSR plug sets are used. The dart is generally supplied with the SSR plug set and must be sized to fit the drillpipe being used.

4.14.1 SSR Plug System Releasing Dart Dimensional Information

Table 4.14.1.A provides dimensional data for the standard drillpipe releasing dart (Figure 4.14.1.A). When an SSR plug arrives on location, the packaged drillpipe plug should be measured to verify that the correct drillpipe releasing dart has been furnished with the plug set. All drillpipe run in the hole during the hookup should be rabbited with a steel or brass bar to verify that the rabbit will pass through the minimum ID restriction noted in Table 4.14.1.A.

4.14.3 SSR Plug System Bottom-Plug Releasing Ball

The bottom plug releasing ball for all 7-in. to 20-in. SSR plug sets (Figure 4.14.3.A) uses a 3.4-specific gravity ball, which will fall freely through most drillpipe tool joints. This ball is packaged with the SSR assembly. The size of the releasing ball should be measured before being launched into the drillpipe (Table 4.14.3.A).
