A heavenly spring evening greeted students and supporters alike as Wyoming Areas fortyfifth annual commencement ceremony began. The Class of 2011, donning anxious smiles, gathered under the sun-drenched sky at the Anthony Jake Sobeski stadium. Each girl carried a white rose as Pomp and Circumstance echoed through the stadium and the graduates made their way to the renowned big stage. Class president Nick Perugini offered a commanding welcome that brought the audience to a reverent silence. A sense of humility resonated within Peruginis voice, his love of Wyoming Area quite evident through his words. Macawley Browns No Longer Studying for the Test rekindled fond memories that sparked laughter from the graduates and audience alike.
Zachary Troy illustrates what its all about: the Class of 2011.

for their well-being. Mr. Nicholas DeAngelo gave his remarks to the class immediately afterward. Debbie Gross recited the class poem, At This Moment, which she wrote to commemorate and capture the emotion of the present, rather than to dwell on the past or future. Carmen Ciampi performed the class song, Our Day is Finally Here, an acoustically melodic composition that garnered a standing ovation. Diplomas and awards were presented before the ceremony came to a successful close. The Alma Mater resonated in the air as the graduates soared across the football field, throwing green and gold caps skyward. The atmosphere was celebratory as dusk, friends, and family enveloped the blissful students.

On Friday, June 17, the Pittston Area Class of 2011 said its final good-bye to a school district that many of them have spent 13 joyful years in. Due to the weather, the 45th commencement was moved inside. As the graduates first gathered in the gymnasium, there was a range of emotions from joy to sadness to excitement. The graduates sat in the bleachers of the gymnasium in their lines eagerly awaiting the start of the commencement ceremonies. They then watched the parade of faculty march by and cheered with gratitude for one final time. After the faculty made their way up the steps towards the auditorium, the graduates followed behind. Next, they entered the auditorium, where family and friends proudly waited for them. The crowd applauded as the Class of 2011 made their way down the aisle and took their seats on stage.
Emily Zurek started the ceremony by singing the National Anthem. The invocation was done by Michael Szumski. Principal John Haas was the Master of Ceremonies. Sara Kielbasa welcomed everyone. Senior class president John Lombardo gave his remarks on the senior class. Superintendent George Cosgrove spoke to the senior class about how never to give up and always try you best. Valedictorians James Castellino, Anthony Guariglia, Vincent Riggi, and Letitia Warunek spoke about the Resolution: The Road That Lies Ahead. The class poem My Class was written by senior Ryan Maroni. Kelsey Knowles sang I Will Always Remember You by Miley Cyrus for the class song. Senior Guidance Counselor Tina Kayden did the introduction of

honor students. School Board President Terrance Best gave remarks. Vice Principal Arthur Savokinas presented the Class of 2011while Mr. Cosgrove presented each student with their diploma. With the presentation of the last diploma, many of the graduates sent through the air numerous beach balls and had a great time tossing them back and forth to each other on the stage. Closing benediction was said by Brian Pernot. John Lombardo then led the class singing the alma mater and
finally came the tossing of the caps. It was a sea of red, white, and blue that filled the auditorium to end a very special night. Many of the graduates now realize that this was their final high school experience; however they are anxious and excited to see what their future now holds. The past four years has been filled with many emotions and experiences, from first loves to fights and from enjoying time with friends to cramming for final exams. One thing is for sure, the Class of 2011 has made everlasting memories and friendships here at Pittston Area High School. No matter where they go or where they end up, members of the Class of 2011 will always have Patriot Pride and will always be a Patriot!

Editors Note: The following is an edited version of Kiels Eigens graduation night speech to his classmates and the Old Forge community. I have been a Blue Devil my entire life. It is all I have ever known. I am convinced that straight out of the womb I had a blue pacifier in my mouth and was wearing a yellow diaper. Over the years when I would talk to some adults they would tell me, oh yeah I remember when I was in high school just like it was yesterday. I kept my mouth shut but inside I was saying, You are like 50? What could you possibly remember about high school? As a graduating senior I now understand what they meant. I still remember playing legos with Kenny Paulish everyday in Kindergarten - to this day he is still my best friend. I can still see and smell the lime green nail polish the spilled everywhere inside Jade Talericos desk which she was not suppose to have in first grade. In third grade we sat side-by-side watching the twin towers collapse. And I will never forget when we were in Mr. Lehmkuhls fourth grade class he gave us a blank map with no states on it just right out of the blue. He told us to fill in the map. Each state was worth two points and it was going to be a test grade. I believe the highest grades in the class were 10s and 12s, now I on the other hand got a two. I know what youre probably thinking, He got Pennsylvania right. Wrong. Do not ask me how or why but the only state I knew on that sheet was Texas. Sixth grade now flashed before our eyes. We felt like we were on top, like we were big kids on campus. We werent little Kindergarten kids anymore. Next thing you know we were in seventh

grade with seniors walking the same halls as us. We went from being on top, to going back to being kindergarteners in the matter of a year. High school was a new experience. New teachers, new surroundings, having lockers But the one thing that stayed the same were my brothers and sisters on this stage tonight. We were all together. Eighth grade came and yes you all know where Im going with this. On September 12, 2006, I went to school just like any ordinary day. Since it was game day the freshman team got to wear our jerseys to school. In homeroom, Mrs.

Garcia told Josh Dawson and I to get more chairs for the class in the cafeteria. When we got there we saw Mrs. Lia, one of the elementary teachers. She saw me, gave me a hug and said, Kiel you look great. I couldnt blame her there. After school let out we had to go down the field house to get ready to leave for our game at Western Wayne. I remember I put my away message on the computer to, There are only three things guaranteed in life, Death, Taxes, and Number 2 will always be open. Although Connor (Fultz) disagreed. First play, I make the tackle, and Im down for the count. As you all know I broke my neck and ended up in Philly for total of 13 days. My classmates made multiple trips down to visit me. Every day it was someone new, and if they couldnt come they would call or send a card. Same thing when I was impatient at Allied for therapy. All hours of
the night people would be there to see how I was doing. After a long process you guys stayed by my side through everything, and I am truly blessed to be with this senior class. Although Im in a chair all of you treated me the same as if I never got hurt, and I respect all of you for that. I will never be able to repay you or thank you guys enough. Senior night will stay with me until the day I die. I can still hear the Superman chant over and over and the awkward silence in between. In football, you guys voted me a captain and that meant a lot to me. Even though I couldnt be on the field with you guys you still kept me in your hearts. To the superintendent, administration, board of directors, faculty, family, friends, and the Old Forge community, everything you guys have done for me over the years I want to give a special thanks to you, and want you to know it was very appreciated. In these past 13 years, we have had our ups and downs, but we always got through it by sticking together. This maybe
the end of things but the way I see it I lucked out because I got 90 brothers and sisters in my family, and thats exactly what we have been from Kindergarden-12th grade. We started as a family and now were ending it the same way. Thank you again for everything you have done for me and all of your support. If it wasnt for you I wouldnt have come close to the goals I have reached. You were all of my motivation for me to get better. I love you guys to death. We will always be friends, Family, and Blue Devils for life. OFHS Class of 2011 graduate Kiel Eigen will attend Kings College in the fall where he will study Pre-Law.
