The Funerals of Monna Lisa were created after the Louvre Museums proposal, which consisted in inviting a contemporary painter who would expose his own vision of a masterpiece from the Louvre collection. Yan Pei-Ming, French artist originally Chinese, well-known for his celebrities portraits, (Mao, Bruce Lee, Marylin Monroe), chose Monna Lisa- La Joconde- immediately, not only because its reproduction featured in painting manuals he used to study in Shanghai, but also because this painting, which symbolizes the Louvre throughout the world, became a veritable icon. In Yan Pei-Mings opinion, the only way to offer a new life to the painting and make it more attractive is to bury it with dignity. The Funerals of Monna Lisa are painted with a dominant white; color assimilated to mourning in China. The landscape in the background is developed here on two big canvases scattered with skulls. La Joconde is paired with more intimist portraits of the artists father and the son; the painter himself. One is dead but remains present, while the other lives but is represented at the morgue. The overall view of the five canvases composes a tale of different temporalities by surrounding the famous painting and the painters life: the cycle of life and death, the strength of filiation, thereby the renewed power of painting. Yan Pei-Ming was born in Shanghai in 1960. He lived in China until the age of nineteen where he painted portraits of Mao. He then left for France in 1980 and enrolled at the Fine Arts School of Dijon, in 1988-9 and pursued his studies at the Institute of Higher Studies in Plastic Arts of Paris while he resided at the Villa Medicis in 1993-94. In 1999, Yan Pei-Ming exhibited a vast picture gallery of children portraits (Le Retable, loge des mtissages) at the Panthon. In 2005, he participated to the Year of France in China and exhibited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Dijon, Shanghai and Guadandong (Canton) lHommage mon pre ( Tribute to my father). In 2007-8, the Maeght Foundation (SaintPaul-de-Vence) welcomed his Portraits dartistes (Artist Portraits).

The Funerals of Monna Lisa were exposed in the XIXth Century paintings galleries at the Louvre in spring 2009, just after the exhibition of Pablo Picassos famous works inspired by the Femmes dAlger by Eugne Delacroix. To exhibit Yan Pei-Mings work in Abu Dhabi is once again asserted as a powerful symbol. A symbol of the Louvres presence starting today in the United Arab Emirates and its engagement to create, with the other French museums, a singular and unique museum that will bear its name for 30 years. A symbol of the Louvres universal dimension reminded here, while we are facing globalization, showing a thin link between its prestigious collections and the artistic contemporary creation by reminding, with strength, the power of the great artwork that binds people from different nations. The museum of the Louvre, affirms itself as an essential element and founder of the cultural dialogues in the beginning of the XXIst century.
