Guidelines for using VCI Packaging Material

Effectiveness of VCI material depends upon many factors such as selection of proper VCI Material, Packaging Methods and Surrounding Conditions which includes temperature, humidity, air flow, presence of salt & sulphur in the atmosphere. For optimum protection of Metal objects following guidelines should be followed : 1 VCI Material should be used for Primary Packaging VCI Plastic Material should be used for the purpose of Primary Packaging. It should not be combined with other methods of corrosion protection. 2 Packaging to be done Immediately on completion of Production Metal components, parts, assemblies etc should be packed immediately on completion of Production. Dust, moisture and other corrosive elements from surrounding may deposit on the surface of metal items if the same is exposed to atmosphere. 3 Packaging of items in Stock or Stored overnight A certain amount of water vapor is always present in the air. During night time, due to atmospheric conditions, the water vapor may condense on the metal surface from the surrounding air which This will subsequently leads to corrosion. Items kept in stock or stored overnight, which are to be protected from Corrosion, should be properly cleaned with clean cotton cloth (preferably using Methanol) before using VCI Packaging Material. Jobs and items to be protected from corrosion should be free from Dust, Dirt, Moisture and Rust. 4 Use Gloves while Packing the Material Human hands are biggest source of corrosion due to presence of corrosive nature of salts on skin and moisture due to perspiration. Metal components, parts and their surfaces should, therefore, be kept clean and free from finger prints before using VCI Packing Material. Packing person should always made to wear gloves while handling metal parts. 5 Distance between VCI Material and object Metal Distance between the VCI Material and surface of the metal product to be protected, should be minimum and should not be more than 6". There should not be any barrier between VCI product and the surface of metal items to be protected. Moreover there should not be direct contact of wood with the metal. 6 If Corrosion already Exists on Metal Surface? VCI Material of any Brand procured from any source prevents future Corrosion. It, however does not cure or repair corrosion which already exists on metal surface. Hence before using VCI Material the job should be clean and free from corrosion and rust. 7 Appropriate Method of closing VCI Poly Bags For effective and optimum performance, VCI packing material does not require any airtight packaging system . However, VCI bags must be enclosed properly and, if possible, should be heat sealed so that corrosive air or moisture do not enter in the VCI Bag from open side.

Stocking of VCI Material VCI Material should not to be stocked for more than six months before use. VCI packaging Material should be kept in original packing and should be stored in a cool, dry area and kept away from direct sunlight. VCI material should not be subjected to excessive moisture or heat before use.

Field Testing Recommended Field Testing is recommended for export and bulk packaging since packed product is transported by different agencies and pass through different temperature zones having different atmospheric conditions.
