The single-session school idea will not fade away. That is heartening, for it demonstrates a durable commitment on the part of education authorities to see this sound concept to fruition. Single-session schools were the norm in the early days, but as student numbers rapidly increased, school premises had to be pressed into double duty. The idea re-surfaced in 1994, retreated, then re-appeared one year later. In 1997, it was put on the back-burner by the financial crisis, only to return when the economy recovered. A 2010 deadline was set, and subsequently revised due to the persistent constraints. The Prime Ministers recent resurrection of the single-session schooling idea was, therefore, not untimely. If it could not be done, and done quickly, students could be sheltered and monitored by their teachers for longer periods of time, and the Education Ministry could be boosted on its agenda of strengthening national schools. Single-session schooling has been successfully implemented in many countries, with lessons starting in the morning and ending at midday, so that co-curricular activities can be held in the afternoon as part of the school day.
