Aim: The aim of this course is making the students capable of handling classical tools of control system intelligently. Learning Outcomes: At the end of this course students will be able to: Describe what a control system is and types of control systems. Demonstrate a control system using differential equations, transfer functions, block diagrams, and signal flow graphs. (i.e. modeling of control systems) Analyze time domain characteristics of a control system. Analyze the stability of a control system using classical methods. (Root Locus method, Routh Hurwitz method, Bode Plot, Nyquist method and Nichol's Chart) Distinguish similarities and differences between above methods and will be able to identify the most appropriate approach for any given application. Design simple control systems using classical methods. Analyze a control system using computerized methods such as MATLAB. Course Syllabus: Introduction to control systems Modeling of control systems Mathematical equations, Signal Flow Graphs, System representations: Using block diagrams and/ or transfer function Time domain analysis Transient analysis, Steady state analysis Stability of control systems Routh Hurwitz criteria, Root Locus plots, Bode plots, Nyquist plots, Nichol's charts Design of control systems using classical methods Use of MATLAB in control systems Course Materials: Students are expected to collect the following materials: 1. Books: 01, 02 & 03 2. Course Information Sheet + Assignments: 01, 02 & 03

In addition to the given study materials, you are expected to search for and read relevant material from libraries and from the Internet. Reference materials for this course are given at the end of this course information sheet and you can use the virtual class facility. 1 of 2

Course Consists of: 1. Three assignments (TMAs), to be submitted on or before the given dates. 2. Two Continuous Assessment Tests (CATs) - CAT #1 is an Open Book type test and this is based on the areas covered in Book 01. - CAT #2 is a Closed Book type test & this is based on the areas covered in Book 01, 02. 3. Labs (at the Automobile laboratory) You are required to submit a report and a viva is taken on the scheduled dates as indicated in the activity diary. 4. Day Schools - Three day schools are conducted at Colombo regional center as scheduled in activity diary. To make the day schools more effective it is recommended that you read your course materials/ reference materials in advance and identify the questions you have. 5. Final Examination - Closed Book Type Course Schedule: Course Schedule is as in the Activity Diary 2011/ 2012. Grading: The following scheme is applicable for the Academic year 2011/12. CA mark = [(BTMA + SBTMA)/2]x 0.2 + BCAT x 0.4 + LAB x 0.4 Where CA continuous assessment mark, CAT continuous assessment test, BTMA best tutor marked assignment SBTMA second best tutor marked assignment BCAT best CAT LAB lab Eligibility for the final examination: If (LAB 40%) AND (CA mark 40%) The overall Grade is based on the average of the CA mark and final examination mark, provided you obtain a minimum of 40% at the final examination. The Open University of Sri Lanka Diploma in Technology - Level 04 Academic Year 2011/12 MEX4243 - CONTROL SYSTEMS ENGINEERING - TMA 1 (1) Answer all questions. (2) Write your registration number clearly on your answer script. (3) Send your answer scripts under registered cover to the address given below or put it into the assignment box available at the Department of Mechanical Engineering (Block 17), Nawala. THE COURSE CO-ORDINATOR - MEX4243 DEPARTMENT OF MECHANICAL ENGINEERING FACULTY OF ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGY THE OPEN UNIVERSITY OF SRI LANKA P.O. BOX 21, NAWALA NUGEGODA. (4) Last date of submission August 05, 2011 (5) No late submissions will be accepted.

Q1.

Select one physical quantity from the list given in Table 1, corresponding to your registration number. Table 1 First digit of the Reg. No. 1, 2 3, 4 5, 6, 7 Physical quantity to be controlled An automatic depth control of a Submarine An azimuth angle of an Antenna control system A cruise-controlled Car

(a) (b) (c) (d) (e)

Describe how the selected quantity may be measured using a transducer. Sketch a complete block diagram to show how you would use the transducer (with other elements) in a feedback control system to achieve your objective. Describe the function of each block of your control system. Obtain a transfer function to represent the transducer. Creating a model of the system that can be analyzed with linear system methods. (This mathematical model will be used in your TMA 2 & TMA 3) State clearly the assumptions made in simplifying the model.

Note: Keep your model simple and closed loop system being only of the second or third order, at most fourth order.
